Accounting for environmental awareness in wheat production through Life Cycle Assessment

This paper presents a modeling framework for simulating the decision-making processes of artificial farms populating an agent-based model for the Italian wheat production system. The decision process is based on a mathematical programming model with which farms (i.e., agents) decide the target yield (production per hectare) and the mix of inputs needed to obtain such production, namely 1) fertilizers, 2) herbicides, and 3) insecticides. The environmental impacts of conventional production practices are assessed through a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), using the ReCiPe 2016 methodology at the Endpoint level. Agents are made aware of the environmental consequences of their choices through two indicators: Disability-Adjusted Life Years (DALYs), which capture human health impacts, and the number of species lost per year, reflecting impacts on ecosystems. By internalizing this information, agents can make more balanced and sustainable production decisions.

Investigating Wheat Price with a Multi-Agent Model

In this paper, we build a computational model for the analysis of international wheat spot price formation, its dynamics and the dynamics of internationally exchanged quantities. The model has been calibrated using FAOSTAT data to evaluate its in-sample predictive power. The model is able to generate wheat prices in twelve international markets and wheat used quantities in twenty-four world regions. The time span considered goes from 1992 to 2013. In our study, a particular attention was paid to the impact of Russian Federation's 2010 grain export ban on wheat price and internationally traded quantities. Among other results, we find that wheat average weighted world price in 2013 would have been 3.55\% lower than the observed one if the Russian Federation would not have imposed the export ban in 2010.

A new approach to business fluctuations: heterogeneous interacting agents, scaling laws and financial fragility

In this paper we discuss a scaling approach to business fluctuations. Our starting point consists in recognizing that concepts and methods derived from physics have allowed economists to (re)discover a set of stylized facts which have to be satisfactorily accounted for in their models. Standard macroeconomics, based on a reductionist approach centered on the representative agent, is definitely badly equipped for this task. On the contrary, we show that a simple financial fragility agent-based model, based on complex interactions of heterogeneous agents, is able to replicate a large number of scaling type stylized facts with a remarkable high degree of statistical precision.
