Lagrangian solutions to the Vlasov-Poisson system with a point charge

We consider the Cauchy problem for the repulsive Vlasov-Poisson system in the three dimensional space, where the initial datum is the sum of a diffuse density, assumed to be bounded and integrable, and a point charge. Under some decay assumptions for the diffuse density close to the point charge, under bounds on the total energy, and assuming that the initial total diffuse charge is strictly less than one, we prove existence of global Lagrangian solutions. Our result extends the Eulerian theory of [16], proving that solutions are transported by the flow trajectories. The proof is based on the ODE theory developed in [8] in the setting of vector fields with anisotropic regularity, where some components of the gradient of the vector field is a singular integral of a measure.

Cellular mixing with bounded palenstrophy

We study the problem of optimal mixing of a passive scalar $ρ$ advected by an incompressible flow on the two dimensional unit square. The scalar $ρ$ solves the continuity equation with a divergence-free velocity field $u$ with uniform-in-time bounds on the homogeneous Sobolev semi-norm $\dot{W}^{s,p}$, where $s>1$ and $1< p \leq \infty$. We measure the degree of mixedness of the tracer $ρ$ via the two different notions of mixing scale commonly used in this setting, namely the functional and the geometric mixing scale. For velocity fields with the above constraint, it is known that the decay of both mixing scales cannot be faster than exponential. Numerical simulations suggest that this exponential lower bound is in fact sharp, but so far there is no explicit analytical example which matches this result. We analyze velocity fields of cellular type, which is a special localized structure often used in constructions of explicit analytical examples of mixing flows and can be viewed as a generalization of the self-similar construction by Alberti, Crippa and Mazzucato. We show that for any velocity field of cellular type both mixing scales cannot decay faster than polynomially.

Eulerian and Lagrangian solutions to the continuity and Euler equations with $L^1$ vorticity

In the first part of this paper we establish a uniqueness result for continuity equations with velocity field whose derivative can be represented by a singular integral operator of an $L^1$ function, extending the Lagrangian theory in \cite{BouchutCrippa13}. The proof is based on a combination of a stability estimate via optimal transport techniques developed in \cite{Seis16a} and some tools from harmonic analysis introduced in \cite{BouchutCrippa13}. In the second part of the paper, we address a question that arose in \cite{FilhoMazzucatoNussenzveig06}, namely whether 2D Euler solutions obtained via vanishing viscosity are renormalized (in the sense of DiPerna and Lions) when the initial data has low integrability. We show that this is the case even when the initial vorticity is only in~$L^1$, extending the proof for the $L^p$ case in \cite{CrippaSpirito15}.

Optimality of integrability estimates for advection-diffusion equations

We discuss $L^p$ integrability estimates for the solution $u$ of the advection-diffusion equation $\partial_t u + \mathrm{div} (bu) = Δu$, where the velocity field $b \in L^r_t L^q_x$. We first summarize some classical results proving such estimates for certain ranges of the exponents $r$ and $q$. Afterwards we prove the optimality of such ranges by means of new original examples.

Uniqueness and Lagrangianity for solutions with lack of integrability of the continuity equation

We deal with the uniqueness of distributional solutions to the continuity equation with a Sobolev vector field and with the property of being a Lagrangian solution, that means transported by a flow of the associated ordinary differential equation. We work in a framework with lack of local integrability of the solution, in which the classical DiPerna-Lions theory of uniqueness and Lagrangianity of distributional solutions does not apply due to the insufficient integrability of the commutator. We introduce a general principle to prove that a solution is Lagrangian: we rely on a disintegration along the unique flow and on a new directional Lipschitz extension lemma, used to construct a large class of test functions in the Lagrangian distributional formulation of the continuity equation.

Lagrangian solutions to the 2D euler system with L^1 vorticity and infinite energy

We consider solutions to the two-dimensional incompressible Euler system with only integrable vorticity, thus with possibly locally infinite energy. With such regularity, we use the recently developed theory of Lagrangian flows associated to vector fields with gradient given by a singular integral in order to define Lagrangian solutions, for which the vorticity is transported by the flow. We prove strong stability of these solutions via strong convergence of the flow, under only the assumption of L^1 weak convergence of the initial vorticity. The existence of Lagrangian solutions to the Euler system follows for arbitrary L^1 vorticity. Relations with previously known notions of solutions are established.

Lagrangian solutions to the Vlasov-Poisson system with L^1 density

The recently developed theory of Lagrangian flows for transport equations with low regularity coefficients enables to consider non BV vector fields. We apply this theory to prove existence and stability of global Lagrangian solutions to the repulsive Vlasov-Poisson system with only integrable initial distribution function with finite energy. These solutions have a well-defined Lagrangian flow. An a priori estimate on the smallness of the superlevels of the flow in three dimensions is established in order to control the characteristics.

Failure of the chain rule for the divergence of bounded vector fields

We provide a vast class of counterexamples to the chain rule for the divergence of bounded vector fields in three space dimensions. Our convex integration approach allows us to produce renormalization defects of various kinds, which in a sense quantify the breakdown of the chain rule. For instance, we can construct defects which are absolutely continuous with respect to Lebesgue measure, or defects which are not even measures.

Lagrangian flows for vector fields with anisotropic regularity

We prove quantitative estimates for flows of vector fields subject to anisotropic regularity conditions: some derivatives of some components are (singular integrals of) measures, while the remaining derivatives are (singular integrals of) integrable functions. This is motivated by the regularity of the vector field in the Vlasov-Poisson equation with measure density. The proof exploits an anisotropic variant of the argument of Crippa and De Lellis and suitable estimates for the difference quotients in such anisotropic context. In contrast to regularization methods, this approach gives quantitative estimates in terms of the given regularity bounds. From such estimates it is possible to recover the well posedness for the ordinary differential equation and for Lagrangian solutions to the continuity and transport equations.

Renormalized solutions to the continuity equation with an integrable damping term

We consider the continuity equation with a nonsmooth vector field and a damping term. In their fundamental paper, DiPerna and Lions proved that, when the damping term is bounded in space and time, the equation is well posed in the class of distributional solutions and the solution is transported by suitable characteristics of the vector field. In this paper, we prove existence and uniqueness of renormalized solutions in the case of an integrable damping term, employing a new logarithmic estimate inspired by analogous ideas of Ambrosio, Lecumberry, and Maniglia, Crippa and De Lellis in the Lagrangian case.

Exponential self-similar mixing and loss of regularity for continuity equations

We consider the mixing behaviour of the solutions of the continuity equation associated with a divergence-free velocity field. In this announcement we sketch two explicit examples of exponential decay of the mixing scale of the solution, in case of Sobolev velocity fields, thus showing the optimality of known lower bounds. We also describe how to use such examples to construct solutions to the continuity equation with Sobolev but non-Lipschitz velocity field exhibiting instantaneous loss of any fractional Sobolev regularity.

Initial-boundary value problems for continuity equations with BV coefficients

We establish well-posedness of initial-boundary value problems for continuity equations with BV (bounded total variation) coefficients. We do not prescribe any condition on the orientation of the coefficients at the boundary of the domain. We also discuss some examples showing that, regardless the orientation of the coefficients at the boundary, uniqueness may be violated as soon as the BV regularity deteriorates at the boundary.

Flows of vector fields with point singularities and the vortex-wave system

The vortex-wave system is a model for the evolution of 2D incompressible fluids in which the vorticity is split into a finite sum of Dirac masses plus an Lp part. Existence of a weak solution for this system was recently proved by Lopes Filho, Miot and Nussenzveig Lopes, for p > 2, but their result left open the existence and basic properties of the underlying Lagrangian flow. In this article we study existence, uniqueness and the qualitative properties of the (Lagrangian flow for the) linear transport problem associated to the vortex-wave system. To this end, we study the flow associated to a two-dimensional vector field which is singular at a moving point. We also present an approximation scheme for the flow, with explicit error estimates obtained by adapting results by Crippa and De Lellis for Sobolev vector-fields.

Lagrangian flows for vector fields with gradient given by a singular integral

We prove quantitative estimates on flows of ordinary differential equations with vector field with gradient given by a singular integral of an $L^1$ function. Such estimates allow to prove existence, uniqueness, quantitative stability and compactness for the flow, going beyond the $BV$ theory. We illustrate the related well-posedness theory of Lagrangian solutions to the continuity and transport equations.
