Work extraction from coherently activated maps via quantum switch

We characterize the impact that the application of two maps in a quantum-controlled order has on the process of work extraction via unitary cycles and its optimization. The control is based on the quantum switch model that applies maps in an order not necessarily compatible with the underlying causal structure and, in principle, can be implemented experimentally. First, we show that the activation of quantum maps through the quantum switch model always entails a non-negative gain in ergotropy compared to their consecutive application. We also establish a condition that the maps should fulfill in order to achieve a non-zero ergotropic gain. We then perform a thorough analysis of maps applied to a two-level system and provide general conditions for achieving a positive gain on the incoherent part of ergotropy. Our results are illustrated with several examples and applied to qubit and $d$-dimensional quantum systems. In particular, we demonstrate that a non-zero work can be extracted from a system thermalized by two coherently controlled reservoirs.

Class of quasiprobability distributions of work and initial quantum coherence

The work is a concept of fundamental importance in thermodynamics. An open question is how to describe the work fluctuation for quantum coherent processes in the presence of initial quantum coherence in the energy basis. With the aim of giving a unified description, here we introduce and study a class of quasiprobability distributions of work, which give an average work equal to the average energy change of the system and reduce to the two-projective measurement scheme for an initial incoherent state. Moreover, we characterize the work with the help of fluctuation relations. In particular, by considering the joint distribution of work and initial quantum coherence, we find a fluctuation theorem involving quantum coherence, from which follows a second law of thermodynamics in the case of initial thermal populations. Furthermore, we propose a way to measure the characteristic function of work and we discuss the negativity of the quasiprobability. The effects of coherence are also investigated for a simple system of a qubit.

Fluctuation theorems and thermodynamic uncertainty relations

Fluctuation theorems are fundamental results in non-equilibrium thermodynamics. Considering the fluctuation theorem with respect to the entropy production and an observable, we derive a new thermodynamic uncertainty relation which also applies to non-cyclic and time-reversal non-symmetric protocols. Furthermore, we investigate the relation between the thermodynamic uncertainty relation and the correlation between the entropy and the observable.

Work done in a decoherence process

We investigate the thermodynamics of a quench realized by turning on an interaction generating pure decoherence. We characterize the work probability distribution function, also with a fluctuation relation, a lower bound of the work and by considering some physical examples.

Information Exchange in Causally Nonseparable Processes

For a system of two parties, the process matrix framework predicts the existence of causally nonseparable structures. We characterize the information exchanged, showing that the total entropy of the two parties acts as a measure for the nonseparability.

Dynamical Casimir Effect and Work in Fermionic Fields

We consider a quantum massless fermionic field in (1+1) dimensions in the case of moving boundaries. We work in the canonical approach in order to find a Hamiltonian describing the dynamics of the field. Thus, we study the statistics of work and particles produced from the vacuum by a linear driving of a boundary.

A Spin $1/2$ Fermions Chain with $XY$ Interaction

We consider a chain of spinful fermions with nearest neighbor hopping in the presence of a $XY$ antiferromagnetic interaction. The $XY$ term is mapped onto a Kitaev chain at half-filling such that displays a bosonic zero mode topologically protected and long-range order. As the strength of the hopping amplitude is changed, the system undergoes a quantum phase transition from the topological non-trivial to the trivial phase. We apply the finite-size scaling method to determinate the phase diagram of the model.

Quantum Coherence and Ergotropy

Constraints on work extraction are fundamental to our operational understanding of the thermodynamics of both classical and quantum systems. In the quantum setting, finite-time control operations typically generate coherence in the instantaneous energy eigenbasis of the dynamical system. Thermodynamic cycles can, in principle, be designed to extract work from this non-equilibrium resource. Here, we isolate and study the quantum coherent component to the work yield in such protocols. Specifically, we identify a coherent contribution to the ergotropy (the maximum amount of unitarily extractable work via cyclical variation of Hamiltonian parameters). We show this by dividing the optimal transformation into an incoherent operation and a coherence extraction cycle. We obtain bounds for both the coherent and incoherent parts of the extractable work and discuss their saturation in specific settings. Our results are illustrated with several examples, including finite-dimensional systems and bosonic Gaussian states that describe recent experiments on quantum heat engines with a quantized load.

Initial quantum coherence in the thermodynamic work

We study the role of the initial quantum coherence in coherent processes generated by an external control of some parameters by looking on the thermodynamic work done. We start by taking in exam an active state and we isolate the contribution to the ergotropy coming from the quantum coherence among the energy eigenstates. It is shown to be related to the quantum relative entropy of coherence through an inequality which involves the completely passive state connected to the initial state. Finally, we extend the analysis to a general out-of-equilibrium process and we show how to take in account in the statistics of work the effects of the initial quantum coherence.

Magnetic field effects on electron transport in nanoring with orbital Rashba coupling

We study the effects of a Zeeman magnetic field on the electron transport of one-dimensional quantum rings which are marked by electronic states with $d-$orbital symmetry in the presence of spin-orbit and orbital Rashba couplings. By considering phase-coherent propagation, we analyse the geometric Aharonov-Anandan (AA) phase of the channels which is acquired in a closed path, by demonstrating that the orbital polarization can influence the electronic transport when amplitude and magnetic field directions are varied. We explore all the possible cases for the injection of electrons at various energies in the regime of low electron filling. The magnetic field can allow the selection of only one channel where the transmission is uniquely affected by the AA phase. Conversely, when more orbital channels are involved there is also a dynamical contribution that lead to oscillations in the transmission as the magnetic field is varied. In particular, the transmission is chiral when the energy states are close to the absolute minimum of the energy bands. Instead, when an interference between the channels occurs the orbital and spin contributions tend to balance each other with the increasing of the magnetic field amplitude resulting in a trivial AA phase. This saturation effect does not occur in the high magnetic field regime when orbital and spin properties of the channels exhibit sharp variations with direct consequences on the transport.

Topological superconducting phases and Josephson effect in curved time-reversal-invariant superconductors

We consider a Rashba spin-orbit coupled nanowire with anisotropic spin-singlet superconducting pairing and time-reversal-invariant symmetry. We explore the evolution of the topological superconducting phases of this system due to geometric deformations for the representative case of a wire bent in a semielliptical shape. We find that when the system is in its topological superconducting phase, strong inhomogeneities in the profile curvature can produce a pair of localized eigenmodes, which can be attributed to a nonuniform topological phase. The curved geometric profile also allows to tune the spin correlations of the superconducting state via the induced inhomogeneity of the spin-orbit coupling (SOC). The geometric control of the superconducting pair correlations allows to manipulate the critical current in Josephson junctions made up of two time reversal invariant topological superconductors separated by a spin-orbit coupled normal metal. In particular, we find that the curvature inhomogeneity can be exploited for amplifying the current intensity, but also to generate a $0-π$ transition, and a second harmonic contribution, which generates, for some specific geometric configurations, a $φ$-junction behavior.

Phase Diagram and Quench Dynamics in a Spinful Interacting Kitaev Chain

We consider an exact solvable interacting spinful Kitaev chain which is a generalization of the Mattis-Nam model. A nearest-neighbor dimerized interaction favoring the production of disjoint molecules drives the quantum phase into an insulating one. The phases are characterized statically and dynamically in terms of magnetization and spin-singlet correlations by using the exact solution. The model is shown to be exactly solvable also in the presence of boundary interactions which are originated from a spin-singlet superconducting pairing and a magnetic field. We exploit the exact solution to investigate the out-of-equilibrium dynamics as due to a quench at the boundary. The propagation of the disturbance in nearest-neighbor magnetic and spin-singlet pairing displays a ballistic behavior for long times with different velocities.

Universal scaling of a classical impurity in the quantum Ising chain

We study finite size scaling for the magnetic observables of an impurity residing at the endpoint of an open quantum Ising chain in a transverse magnetic field, realized by locally rescaling the magnetic field by a factor $μ\neq 1$. In the homogeneous chain limit at $μ= 1$, we find the expected finite size scaling for the longitudinal impurity magnetization, with no specific scaling for the transverse magnetization. At variance, in the classical impurity limit, $μ= 0$, we recover finite scaling for the longitudinal magnetization, while the transverse one basically does not scale. For this case, we provide both analytic approximate expressions for the magnetization and the susceptibility as well as numerical evidences for the scaling behavior. At intermediate values of $μ$, finite size scaling is violated, and we provide a possible explanation of this result in terms of the appearance of a second, impurity related length scale. Finally, on going along the standard quantum-to-classical mapping between statistical models, we derive the classical counterpart of the quantum Ising chain with an impurity at its endpoint as a classical Ising model on a square lattice wrapped on a half-infinite cylinder, with the links along the first circle modified as a function of $μ$.

Daemonic Ergotropy: Enhanced Work Extraction from Quantum Correlations

We investigate how the presence of quantum correlations can influence work extraction in closed quantum systems, establishing a new link between the field of quantum non-equilibrium thermodynamics and the one of quantum information theory. We consider a bipartite quantum system and we show that it is possible to optimise the process of work extraction, thanks to the correlations between the two parts of the system, by using an appropriate feedback protocol based on the concept of ergotropy. We prove that the maximum gain in the extracted work is related to the existence of quantum correlations between the two parts, quantified by either quantum discord or, for pure states, entanglement. We then illustrate our general findings on a simple physical situation consisting of a qubit system.

Work statistics, irreversible heat and correlations build-up in joining two spin chains

We investigate the influences of quantum many-body effects, such as criticality and the existence of factorisation fields, in the thermodynamic cost of establishing a bonding link between two independent quantum spin chains. We provide a physical interpretation of the behavior of irreversible work spent in such process by linking the phenomenology of such quantities to the properties of the spectrum of the system
