Tidal perturbations of an extreme mass ratio inspiral around a Kerr black hole

We determine the metric of a Kerr black hole subject to external tidal fields using metric reconstruction techniques. Working within the Newman-Penrose formalism, we solve the Teukolsky master equation for static, quadrupolar modes associated with a slowly varying tidal environment, and reconstruct the corresponding metric perturbation in the outgoing radiation gauge. As an application, we derive the secular Hamiltonian governing the motion of a test particle in the tidally deformed Kerr spacetime and investigate long-term tidal effects relevant to extreme-mass-ratio inspirals. In particular, we compute tidal-induced shifts of the innermost stable circular orbit and the light ring. We find that these tidal corrections are strongly spin dependent, with significantly larger effects for retrograde orbits around rapidly rotating black holes. Our results provide a fully analytic framework for studying tidal interactions and secular dynamics in rotating black-hole spacetimes, with direct applications to gravitational-wave modeling and tests of gravity in the strong-field regime.

Observable signature of magnetic tidal coupling in hierarchical triple systems

We study hierarchical triple systems formed by a compact binary orbiting a supermassive black hole (SMBH), focusing on the role of relativistic magnetic tidal interactions. Extending previous analyses of precession resonances to 0.5 post-Newtonian order, we incorporate quadrupolar magnetic tidal moments, which have no Newtonian counterpart. We find that magnetic tides introduce new resonances absent at lower order, leading to additional eccentricity excitations and significantly modifying the binary's long-term evolution. Numerical solutions of the Lagrange Planetary Equations confirm these analytical predictions and reveal how resonance strength depends on orbital eccentricity and inclination. The resulting dynamics accelerates the binary merger and imprints distinctive signatures on gravitational waves, potentially observable by LISA. Our findings identify magnetic tidal coupling as a novel strong-gravity effect and establish its importance for the resonant dynamics of compact-object binaries near SMBHs.

Exploring the gauge flexibility of the linear-in-spin effective-one-body Hamiltonian at the 5.5 post-Newtonian order

We derive the gauge-general expressions of the two gyro-gravitomagnetic functions entering the spin-orbit sector of the effective-one-body (EOB) Hamiltonian up to the fifth-and-half post-Newtonian (5.5PN) order. Our results include both local and nonlocal-in-time contributions, providing the most general analytical formulation of the linear-in-spin conservative dynamics within the EOB framework. These expressions are then employed to compute two gauge-invariant observables for quasi-circular orbits: the binding energy and the fractional periastron advance. We also use them to compare two spin-gauge choices: the well-known Damour-Jaranowski-Schäfer ($\rm DJS$) gauge, in which the gyro-gravitomagnetic functions are independent of the orbital angular momentum, and the alternative anti-$\rm DJS$ (or $\overline{\rm DJS}$) gauge, designed to reproduce in the test-mass limit the spin-orbit interaction of a spinning test particle in a Kerr background. For a circular, equal-mass, equal-spin binary, our analysis indicates that the $\overline{\rm DJS}$ gauge provides a slightly improved description of the inspiral dynamics, suggesting potential advantages for its use in future EOB waveform models.

Strong-gravity precession resonances for binary systems orbiting a Schwarzschild black hole

Binary systems of compact objects in close orbit around a supermassive black hole (SMBH) may form in galactic nuclei, providing a unique environment to probe strong-gravity tidal effects on the binary's dynamics. In this work, we investigate precession resonances arising between the periastron precession frequency of a binary system and its orbital frequencies around the SMBH. By modeling the SMBH as a Schwarzschild black hole, we find that relativistic effects in the tidal field give rise to a significantly richer resonance spectrum compared to the Newtonian case. This result is supported by both perturbative and numerical analyses of the quadrupolar tidal interaction in the strong-gravity regime. Our results reveal new signatures for strong-gravity effects in such triple systems, with potential implications for gravitational-wave astronomy.

Direct current memory effects in effective-one-body waveform models

The direct current (DC) memory is a non-oscillatory, hereditary component of the gravitational wave (GW) signal that represents one of the most peculiar manifestations of the nonlinear nature of GW emission and propagation. In this work, by transforming the results provided in Ebersold et al. [Phys.Rev.D 100 (2019) 8, 084043] in harmonic coordinates and quasi-Keplerian parametrization, we provide the DC memory in terms of the effective-one-body (EOB) phase-space variables, with a relative accuracy of 2.5PN and in an expansion for small eccentricity up to order six. Our results are then implemented in TEOBResumS-Dalí, thus providing the first EOB model with DC memory contributions. This model is then used to assess the impact on the waveform and the main features of the DC memory, also addressing its dependence on the eccentricity of the binary system at its formation.

Binary mergers in strong gravity background of Kerr black hole

Binary-black-hole (BBH) mergers can take place close to a supermassive black hole (SMBH) while being in a bound orbit around the SMBH. In this paper, we study such bound triple systems and show that including the strong gravity effects of describing the SMBH with a Kerr metric can significantly modify the dynamics, as compared to a Newtonian point particle description of the SMBH. We extract the dynamics of the system, using a quadrupole approximation to the tidal forces due to the SMBH. We exhibit how the gyroscope precession is built into this dynamics, and find the secular Hamiltonian by both averaging over the inner and outer orbits, the latter being the orbit of the BBH around the SMBH. We study the long-time-scale dynamics, including the periastron precession and GW radiation-reaction of the binary system, finding that the strong gravity effects of the SMBH can enhance the von Zeipel-Lidov-Kozai mechanism, resulting in more cycles, higher maximum eccentricity, and thereby a shorter merger time, particularly when the binary is close to, or at, the innermost stable orbit of the SMBH. We end with an analysis of the peak frequency of the GW emission from the binary system, highlighting possible observable signatures in the LISA and ET frequency bands.

2.5PN accurate waveform information for generic-planar-orbit binaries in effective one-body models

We provide the post-Newtonian (PN) waveform for binary systems in motion along generic planar orbits at 2.5PN accuracy, in terms of the dynamical variables of the effective one-body (EOB) formalism. In addition to the calculation of the higher order terms for all the contributions to the waveform that have been already considered in previous avatars of EOB models, we also compute the EOB expression of the oscillatory memory terms. These are purely non-circular contributions, first appearing at 1.5PN order, that have been so far neglected in the EOB literature. This should foster their inclusion in EOB models and the definitive assessment of their role in shaping gravitational wave signals at infinity. To further promote the application of our results, we also derive associated non-circular factors according to the waveform factorization prescription of the non-circular EOB model TEOBResumS-DALI; the result is a set of ready-to-use non-circular factors that can be directly implemented as extra non-circular corrections in the waveform of TEOBResumS-DALI.

Tidal deformations of a binary system induced by an external Kerr black hole

The dynamics of a binary system moving in the background of a black hole is affected by tidal forces. In this work, for the Kerr black hole, we derive the electric and magnetic tidal moments at quadrupole order, where the latter are computed for the first time in full generality. We make use of these moments in the scenario of a hierarchical triple system made of a Kerr black hole and an extreme-mass ratio binary system consisting of a Schwarzschild black hole and a test particle. We study how the secular dynamics of the test particle in the binary system is distorted by the presence of tidal forces from a much larger Kerr black hole. Our treatment includes strong gravitational effects beyond the post-Newtonian approximation both for the binary system and for the tidal forces since the binary system is allowed to be close to the event horizon of the Kerr black hole. We compute the shifts in the physical quantities for the secular dynamics of the test particle and show that they are gauge-invariant. In particular, we apply our formalism to the innermost stable circular orbit for the test particle and to the case of the photon sphere. Our results are relevant for the astrophysical situation in which the binary system is in the vicinity of a supermassive black hole.

Blandford--Znajek monopole expansion revisited: novel non-analytic contributions to the power emission

The Blandford and Znajek (BZ) split-monopole serves as an important theoretical example of the mechanism that can drive the electromagnetic extraction of energy from Kerr black holes. It is constructed as a perturbative low spin solution of Force Free Electrodynamics (FFE). Recently, Armas $et~al.$ put this construction on a firmer footing by clearing up issues with apparent divergent asymptotics. This was accomplished by resolving the behavior around the outer light surface, a critical surface of the FFE equations. Building on this, we revisit the BZ perturbative expansion, and extend the perturbative approach to higher orders in the spin parameter of the Kerr black hole. We employ matched-asymptotic-expansions and semi-analytic techniques to extend the split-monopole solution to the sixth-order in perturbation theory. The expansion necessarily includes novel logarithmic contributions in the spin parameter. We show that these higher order terms result in non-analytic contributions to the power and angular momentum output. In particular, we compute for the first time the perturbative contributions to the energy extraction at seventh- and eighth-order in the spin parameter. The resulting formula for the energy extraction improves the agreement with numerical simulations at finite spin. Moreover, we present a novel numerical procedure for resolving the FFE equations across the outer light surface, resulting in significantly faster convergence and greater accuracy, and extend this to higher orders as well. Finally, we include a general discussion of light surfaces as critical surfaces of the FFE equations.

Exploiting Newton-factorized, 2PN-accurate, waveform multipoles in effective-one-body models for spin-aligned noncircularized binaries

We present a new approach to factorize and resum the post-Newtonian (PN) waveform for generic equatorial motion to be used within effective-one-body (EOB) based waveform models. The new multipolar waveform factorization improves previous prescriptions in that: (i) the generic Newtonian contribution is factored out from each multipole; (ii) the circular part is factored out and resummed using standard EOB methods and (iii) the residual, 2PN-accurate, noncircular part, and in particular the tail contribution, is additionally resummed using Padé approximants. The resulting waveform is validated in the extreme-mass-ratio limit by comparisons with nine (mostly nonspinning) numerical waveforms either from eccentric inspirals, with eccentricities up to $e=0.9$, or dynamical captures . The resummation of the noncircular tail contribution is found essential to obtain excellent (${\lesssim}0.05$~rad at periastron for $e=0.9$) analytical/numerical agreement and to considerably improve the prescription with just the Newtonian prefactor. In the comparable mass case, the new 2PN waveform shows only a marginal improvement over the previous Newtonian factorization, though yielding maximal unfaithfulness $\simeq 10^{-3}$ with the 28 publicly available numerical relativity simulations with eccentricity up to $\sim 0.3$ (except for a single outlier that grazes $10^{-2}$). We finally use test-particle data to validate the waveform factorization proposed by Khalil et al.~[Phys.~Rev.~104 (2021) 2, 024046] and conclude that its amplitude can be considered reliable (though less accurate, $\sim 6\%$ fractional difference versus $1.5\%$ of our method) only up to eccentricities $\sim 0.3$.

Fixing the non-relativistic expansion of the 1PM potential

We obtain a first order post-Minkowskian two-body effective potential whose post-Newtonian expansion directly reproduces the Einstein-Infeld-Hoffmann potential. Post-Minkowskian potentials can be extracted from on-shell scattering amplitudes in a quantum field theory of scalar matter coupled to gravity. Previously, such potentials did not reproduce the Einstein-Infeld-Hoffmann potential without employing a suitable canonical transformation. In this work, we resolve this issue by obtaining a new expression for the first-order post-Minkowskian potential. This is accomplished by exploiting the reference frame dependence that arises in the scattering amplitude computation. Finally, as a check on our result, we demonstrate that our new potential gives the correct scattering angle.

Force-free electrodynamics near rotation axis of a Kerr black hole

Despite their potential importance for understanding astrophysical jets, physically realistic exact solutions for magnetospheres around Kerr black holes have not been found, even in the force-free approximation. Instead approximate analytical solutions such as the Blandford-Znajek (split-)monopole, as well as numerical solutions, have been constructed. In this paper we consider a new approach to the analysis and construction of such magnetospheres. We consider force-free electrodynamics close to the rotation axis of a magnetosphere surrounding a Kerr black hole assuming axisymmetry. This is the region where the force-free approximation should work the best, and where the jets are located. We perform a systematic study of the asymptotic region with (split-)monopole, paraboloidal and vertical asymptotic behaviors. Imposing asymptotics similar to a (split-)monopole, we find under certain assumptions that demanding regularity at the rotation axis and the event horizon restricts solutions of the stream equation so much that it is not possible for a solution to be continuously connected to the static (split-)monopole around the Schwarzschild black hole in the limit where the rotation goes to zero. On the one hand, this result provides independent evidence to the issues discovered with the asymptotics of the Blandford-Znajek (split-)monopole in Ref. [1]. On the other hand, we also point out possible caveats in our arguments that one could conceivably exploit to amend the perturbative construction of the Blandford-Znajek (split-)monopole.

Defect QED: Dielectric without a Dielectric, Monopole without a Monopole

We study a class of defect quantum field theories where the quantum field theory in the 3+1-dimensional bulk is a free photon and charged matter and the interactions of the photons with the charges occur entirely on a 2+1-dimensional defect. We observe that at the fully quantum level, the effective action of such a theory is still a defect field theory with free photons propagating in the bulk and the nonlinearities in the quantum corrections to the Maxwell equations confined to the defect. We use this observation to show that the defect field theory has interesting electromagnetic properties. The electromagnetic fields sourced by static test charges are attenuated as if the bulk surrounding them were filled with a dielectric material. This is particularly interesting when the observer and test charge are on opposite sides of the defect. Then the effect is isotropic and it is operative even in the region near the defect. If the defect is in a time reversal violating state, image charges have the appearance of electrically and magnetically charged dyons. We present the example of a single layer in a quantum Hall state. We observe that the charge screening effect in charge neutral graphene should be significant, and even more dramatic when the layer is in a metallic state with mobile electrons.

AC conductivities of a holographic Dirac semimetal

We use the AdS/CFT correspondence to compute the AC conductivities for a (2+1)-dimensional system of massless fundamental fermions coupled to (3+1)-dimensional Super Yang-Mills theory at strong coupling. We consider the system at finite charge density, with a constant electric field along the defect and an orthogonal magnetic field. The holographic model we employ is the well studied D3/probe-D5-brane system. There are two competing phases in this model: a phase with broken chiral symmetry favored when the magnetic field dominates over the charge density and the electric field and a chirally symmetric phase in the opposite regime. The presence of the electric field induces Ohm and Hall currents, which can be straightforwardly computed by means of the Karch-O'Bannon technique.Studying the fluctuations around the stable configurations in linear response theory, we are able to derive the full frequency dependence of longitudinal and Hall conductivities in all the regions of the phase space.

On the existence of the Blandford-Znajek monopole for a slowly rotating Kerr black hole

The Blandford-Znajek monopole is a conjectured solution of force-free electrodynamics in the vicinity of a slowly rotating Kerr black hole, supposedly defined as a perturbation in small angular momentum. It is used to argue for the extraction of energy from rotating black holes by the Blandford-Znajek process. We set up a careful analysis of the perturbative definition of the Blandford-Znajek monopole, showing in particular that the regime in which it is defined allows to use the technique of matched asymptotic expansions. Our conclusion is that the Blandford-Znajek monopole, as it is defined, is not consistent with demanding physically reasonable boundary conditions far away from the event horizon. This puts into question the existence of the Blandford-Znajek monopole, at least in the limit of slow rotation of the Kerr black hole.

The Flowing BIon

In this paper we use the effective blackfold description of branes to extend the study of the thermal BIon, a D-brane and parallel anti-D-brane connected by a wormhole with F-string charge in hot flat space, by introducing a radial boost along the brane. The boosted system behaves qualitatively differently from both the extremal and the thermal BIon considered previously. Interestingly, we are able to formulate a first law of thermodynamics for the system as a whole, despite the fact that it is not a stationary blackfold. In particular, the global temperature is given by the rest frame temperature times the gamma factor of special relativity which is the inverse transformation compared to the case of stationary blackfolds. In addition we define two new kinds of thermodynamic conjugate variables, the energy flux $W$ and the integrated velocity on the brane. We find that a phase transition occurs by varying the energy flux $W$. Below a critical value of $W$ the brane separation $Δ$ changes only slightly with $W$. Instead above the critical value $Δ$ grows exponentially.

AC conductivity for a holographic Weyl Semimetal

We study the AC electrical conductivity at zero temperature in a holographic model for a Weyl semimetal. At small frequencies we observe a linear dependence in the frequency. The model shows a quantum phase transition between a topological semimetal (Weyl semimetal phase) with a non vanishing anomalous Hall conductivity and a trivial semimetal. The AC conductivity has an intermediate scaling due to the presence of a quantum critical region in the phase diagram of the system. The phase diagram is reconstructed using the scaling properties of the conductivity. We compare with the experimental data of [1502.03807] obtaining qualitative agreement.
