Finite-size corrections to the rotating string and the winding state

We compute higher order finite size corrections to the energies of the circular rotating string on AdS_5 x S^5, of its orbifolded generalization on AdS_5 x S^5/Z_M and of the winding state which is obtained as the limit of the orbifolded circular string solution when J -> infinity and J/M^2 is kept fixed. We solve, at the first order in lambda'=lambda/J^2, where lambda is the 't Hooft coupling, the Bethe equations that describe the anomalous dimensions of the corresponding gauge dual operators in an expansion in m/K, where m is the winding number and K is the "magnon number", and to all orders in the angular momentum J. The solution for the circular rotating string and for the winding state can be matched to the energy computed from an effective quantum Landau-Lifshitz model beyond the first order correction in 1/J. For the leading 1/J corrections to the circular rotating string in m^2 and m^4 and for the subleading 1/J^2 corrections to the m^2 term, we find agreement. For the winding state we match the energy completely up to, and including, the order 1/J^2 finite-size corrections. The solution of the Bethe equations corresponding to the spinning closed string is also provided in an expansion in m/K and to all orders in J.

Finite-size corrections in the SU(2) x SU(2) sector of type IIA string theory on AdS_4 x CP^3

We consider finite-size corrections in the SU(2) x SU(2) sector of type IIA string theory on AdS_4 x CP^3, which is the string dual of the recently constructed N=6 superconformal Chern-Simons theory of Aharony, Bergman, Jafferis and Maldacena (ABJM theory). The string states we consider are in the R x S^2 x S^2 subspace of AdS_4 x CP^3 with an angular momentum J on CP^3 being large. We compute the finite-size corrections using two different methods, one is to consider curvature corrections to the Penrose limit giving an expansion in 1/J, the other by considering a low energy expansion in lambda'=lambda/J^2 of the string theory sigma-model, lambda being the 't Hooft coupling of the dual ABJM theory. For both methods there are interesting issues to deal with. In the near-pp-wave method there is a 1/\sqrt{J} interaction term for which we use zeta-function regularization in order to compute the 1/J correction to the energy. For the low energy sigma-model expansion we have to take into account a non-trivial coupling to a non-dynamical transverse direction. We find agreement between the two methods. At order lambda' and lambda'^2, for small lambda', our results are analogous to the ones for the SU(2) sector in type IIB string theory on AdS_5 x S^5. Instead at order lambda'^3 there are interactions between the two two-spheres. We compare our results with the recently proposed all-loop Bethe ansatz of Gromov and Vieira and find agreement.

The SU(2) x SU(2) sector in the string dual of N=6 superconformal Chern-Simons theory

We examine the string dual of the recently constructed $\mathcal{N}=6$ superconformal Chern-Simons theory of Aharony, Bergman, Jafferis and Maldacena (ABJM theory). We focus in particular on the $SU(2)\times SU(2)$ sector. We find a sigma-model limit in which the resulting sigma-model is two Landau-Lifshitz models added together. We consider a Penrose limit for which we can approach the $SU(2)\times SU(2)$ sector. Finally, we find a new Giant Magnon solution in the $SU(2)\times SU(2)$ sector corresponding to one magnon in each $SU(2)$. We put these results together to find the full magnon dispersion relation and we compare this to recently found results for ABJM theory at weak coupling.

Finite size Giant Magnons in the string dual of N=6 superconformal Chern-Simons theory

We find the exact solution for a finite size Giant Magnon in the $SU(2)\times SU(2)$ sector of the string dual of the $\mathcal{N}=6$ superconformal Chern-Simons theory recently constructed by Aharony, Bergman, Jafferis and Maldacena. The finite size Giant Magnon solution consists of two magnons, one in each $SU(2)$. In the infinite size limit this solution corresponds to the Giant Magnon solution of arXiv:0806.4959. The magnon dispersion relation exhibits finite-size exponential corrections with respect to the infinite size limit solution.

Thermodynamics of theories with sixteen supercharges in non-trivial vacua

We study the thermodynamics of maximally supersymmetric U(N) Yang-Mills theory on $\mathds{R}\times S^2$ at large $N$. The model arises as a consistent truncation of ${\cal N}=4$ super Yang-Mills on $\mathds{R}\times S^3$ and as the continuum limit of the plane-wave matrix model expanded around the $N$ spherical membrane vacuum. The theory has an infinite number of classical BPS vacua, labeled by a set of monopole numbers, described by dual supergravity solutions. We first derive the Lagrangian and its supersymmetry transformations as a deformation of the usual dimensional reduction of ${\cal N}=1$ gauge theory in ten dimensions. Then we compute the partition function in the zero 't Hooft coupling limit in different monopole backgrounds and with chemical potentials for the $R$-charges. In the trivial vacuum we observe a first-order Hagedorn transition separating a phase in which the Polyakov loop has vanishing expectation value from a regime in which this order parameter is non-zero, in analogy with the four-dimensional case. The picture changes in the monopole vacua due to the structure of the fermionic effective action. Depending on the regularization procedure used in the path integral, we obtain two completely different behaviors, triggered by the absence or the appearance of a Chern-Simons term. In the first case we still observe a first-order phase transition, with Hagedorn temperature depending on the monopole charges. In the latter the large $N$ behavior is obtained by solving a unitary multi-matrix model with a peculiar logarithmic potential, the system does not present a phase transition and it always appears in a ``deconfined'' phase.

Gauge invariant finite size spectrum of the giant magnon

It is shown that the finite size corrections to the spectrum of the giant magnon solution of classical string theory, computed using the uniform light-cone gauge, are gauge invariant and have physical meaning. This is seen in two ways: from a general argument where the single magnon is made gauge invariant by putting it on an orbifold as a wrapped state obeying the level matching condition as well as all other constraints, and by an explicit calculation where it is shown that physical quantum numbers do not depend on the uniform light-cone gauge parameter. The resulting finite size effects are exponentially small in the $R$-charge and the exponent (but not the prefactor) agrees with gauge theory computations using the integrable Hubbard model.

Finite size corrections and integrability of $\mathcal{N}=2$ SYM and DLCQ strings on a pp-wave

We compute the planar finite size corrections to the spectrum of the dilatation operator acting on two-impurity states of a certain limit of conformal $\mathcal{N}=2$ quiver gauge field theory which is a $Z_M$-orbifold of $\mathcal{N}=4$ supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory. We match the result to the string dual, IIB superstrings propagating on a pp-wave background with a periodically identified null coordinate. Up to two loops, we show that the computation of operator dimensions, using an effective Hamiltonian technique derived from renormalized perturbation theory and a twisted Bethe ansatz which is a simple generalization of the Beisert-Dippel-Staudacher~\cite{Beisert:2004hm} long range spin chain, agree with each other and also agree with a computation of the analogous quantity in the string theory. We compute the spectrum at three loop order using the twisted Bethe ansatz and find a disagreement with the string spectrum very similar to the known one in the near BMN limit of $\mathcal{N}=4$ super-Yang-Mills theory. We show that, like in $\mathcal{N}=4$, this disagreement can be resolved by adding a conjectured ``dressing factor'' to the twisted Bethe ansatz. Our results are consistent with integrability of the $\mathcal{N}=2$ theory within the same framework as that of $\mathcal{N}=4$.

AdS/CFT v.s. String Loops

The one string-loop correction to the energies of two impurity BMN states are computed using IIB light-cone string field theory with an improved 3-string vertex that has been proposed by Dobashi and Yoneya. As in previous published computations, the string vertices are truncated to the 2-impurity channel. The result is compared with the prediction from non-planar corrections in the BMN limit of $\mathcal{N}=4$ supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory. It is found to agree at leading order -- one-loop in Yang-Mills theory -- and is close but not quite in agreement at order two Yang-Mills loops. Furthermore, in addition to the leading 1/2 power in the t'Hooft coupling, which is generic in string field theory, and which we have previously argued cancels, we find that the 3/2 and 5/2 powers are also miraculously absent.

A solution to the 4-tachyon off-shell amplitude in cubic string field theory

We derive an analytic series solution of the elliptic equations providing the 4-tachyon off-shell amplitude in cubic string field theory (CSFT). From such a solution we compute the exact coefficient of the quartic effective action relevant for time dependent solutions and we derive the exact coefficient of the quartic tachyon coupling. The rolling tachyon solution expressed as a series of exponentials $e^t$ is studied both using level-truncation computations and the exact 4-tachyon amplitude. The results for the level truncated coefficients are shown to converge to those derived using the exact string amplitude. The agreement with previous work on the subject, both on the quartic tachyon coupling and on the CSFT rolling tachyon, is an excellent test for the accuracy of our off-shell solution.

Divergence Cancellation and Loop Corrections in String Field Theory on a Plane Wave Background

We investigate the one-loop energy shift E to certain two-impurity string states in light-cone string field theory on a plane wave background. We find that there exist logarithmic divergences in the sums over intermediate mode numbers which cancel between the cubic Hamiltonian and quartic ``contact term''. Analyzing the impurity non-conserving channel we find that the non-perturbative, order g_2^2 sqrt(lambda') contribution to E/mu predicted in hep-th/0211220 is in fact an artifact of these logarithmic divergences and vanishes with them, leaving an order g_2^2 lambda' contribution. Exploiting the supersymmetry algebra, we present a form for the energy shift which appears to be manifestly convergent and free of non-perturbative terms. We use this form to argue that E/mu receives order g_2^2 lambda' contributions at every order in intermediate state impurities.

The superstring Hagedorn temperature in a pp-wave background

The thermodynamics of type IIB superstring theory in the maximally supersymmetric plane wave background is studied. We compute the thermodynamic partition function for non-interacting strings exactly and the result differs slightly from previous computations. We clarify some of the issues related to the Hagedorn temperature in the limits of small and large constant RR 5-form. We study the thermodynamic behavior of strings in the case of $AdS_3 \times S^3 \times T^4$ geometries in the presence of NS-NS and RR 3-form backgrounds. We also comment on the relationship of string thermodynamics and the thermodynamic behavior of the sector of Yang-Mills theory which is the holographic dual of the string theory.

Matrix strings in a B-field

We study the discrete light-cone quantization (DLCQ) of closed strings in the background of Minkowski space-time and a constant Neveu-Schwarz $B$-field. For the Bosonic string, we identify the $B$-dependent part of the thermodynamic free energy to all orders in string perturbation theory. For every genus, $B$ appears in a constraint in the path integral which restricts the world-sheet geometries to those which are branched covers of a certain torus. This is the extension of a previous result where the $B$-field was absent \cite{Grignani:2000zm}. We then discuss the coupling of a $B$-field to the Matrix model of M-theory. We show that, when we consider this theory at finite temperature and in a finite $B$-field, the Matrix variables are functions which live on a torus with the same Teichmüller parameter as the one that we identified in string theory. We show explicitly that the thermodynamic partition function of the Matrix string model in the limit of free strings reproduces the genus 1 thermodynamic partition function of type IIA string. This is strong evidence that the Matrix model can reproduce perturbative string theory. We also find an interesting behavior of the Hagedorn temperature.

Conformal Symmetry and Differential Regularization of the Three-Gluon Vertex

The conformal symmetry of the QCD Lagrangian for massless quarks is broken both by renormalization effects and the gauge fixing procedure. Renormalized primitive divergent amplitudes have the property that their form away from the overall coincident point singularity is fully determined by the bare Lagrangian, and scale dependence is restricted to $δ$-functions at the singularity. If gauge fixing could be ignored, one would expect these amplitudes to be conformal invariant for non-coincident points. We find that the one-loop three-gluon vertex function $Γ_{μνρ}(x,y,z)$ is conformal invariant in this sense, if calculated in the background field formalism using the Feynman gauge for internal gluons. It is not yet clear why the expected breaking due to gauge fixing is absent. The conformal property implies that the gluon, ghost and quark loop contributions to $Γ_{μνρ}$ are each purely numerical combinations of two universal conformal tensors $D_{μνρ}(x,y,z)$ and $C_{μνρ}(x,y,z)$ whose explicit form is given in the text. Only $D_{μνρ}$ has an ultraviolet divergence, although $C_{μνρ}$ requires a careful definition to resolve the expected ambiguity of a formally linearly divergent quantity. Regularization is straightforward and leads to a renormalized vertex function which satisfies the required Ward identity, and from which the beta-function is easily obtained. Exact conformal invariance is broken in higher-loop orders, but we outline a speculative scenario in which the perturbative structure of the vertex function is determined from a conformal invariant primitive core by interplay of the renormalization group equation and Ward identities.
