We review recent progress in constructing maximal, classical supergravity models and their applications.
We prove necessary and sufficient algebraic conditions to determine whether a D=3 gauged maximal supergravity can be obtained from consistent Kaluza-Klein truncation of ten- or eleven-dimensional supergravity. We describe the procedure to identify the internal geometry and explicitly construct the frame encoding the reduction ansatz. As byproducts, we derive several results on twistings, deformations and global aspects of E$_8$ exceptional geometry and define E$_8$ generalised diffeomorphism for massive IIA supergravity. We devise simple algebraic conditions for imposing compactness of the internal space and derive no-go results for the uplift of compact gaugings and of a large class of gauged maximal supergravities with N=(8,0) AdS$_3$ solutions.
Eleven-dimensional supergravity on $S^8\times S^1$ is conjectured to be dual to the M-theory matrix model. We prove that the dynamics of a subset of fluctuations around this background is consistently described by D=2 SO(9) gauged maximal supergravity. We provide the full non-linear uplift formulae for all bosonic fields. We also present a further truncation to the SO(3)$\times$SO(6) invariant sector and discuss its relation to the BMN matrix model at finite temperature. The construction relies on the framework of generalised Scherk-Schwarz reductions, established for E$_9$ exceptional field theory in a companion paper. As a by-product, we severely constrain the most general gauge deformations in D=2 admitting an uplift to higher dimensions.
We develop in detail the general framework of consistent Kaluza-Klein truncations from D=11 and type II supergravities to gauged maximal supergravities in two dimensions. In particular, we unveil the complete bosonic dynamics of all gauged maximal supergravities that admit a geometric uplift. Our construction relies on generalised Scherk-Schwarz reductions of E$_9$ exceptional field theory. The application to the reduction of D=11 supergravity on $S^8\times S^1$ to SO(9) gauged supergravity is presented in a companion paper.
We consider generalized Scherk-Schwarz reductions of E$_9$ exceptional field theory to D=2 space-time dimensions and in particular construct the resulting scalar potential of all gauged supergravities that can be obtained in this way. This provides the first general expression for a multitude of theories with an interesting structure of vacua, covering potentially many new AdS$_2$ cases. As an application, we prove the consistency of the truncation of eleven-dimensional supergravity on $S^8\times S^1$ to SO(9) gauged maximal supergravity. Fluctuations around its supersymmetric SO(9)-invariant vacuum describe holographically the dynamics of interacting D0-branes.
We construct analytically a new family of supersymmetric AdS$_4$ solutions of IIB supergravity, with the internal space provided by a deformed $S^5\times S^1$. The solutions preserve N=1 supersymmetry and an SO(3) subgroup of isometries of $S^5$, which is broken to U(1) along a flat direction. They are further parametrised by a winding number and a choice of SL(2) duality twist along the circle in an elliptic conjugacy class, thus including both globally geometric and S-fold configurations. We identify these solutions by first constructing a new family of vacua of D=4, $U(4)\ltimes\mathbb{R}^{12}$ gauged maximal supergravity and use exceptional field theory to perform the uplift to ten dimensions. We discuss the relevance of D=5 Wilson loops associated to preserved and broken gauge symmetries in the construction of these classes of solutions.
We perform a detailed analysis of the vacua of $ω$-deformed SO(8) supergravity in four dimensions. In particular, using Tensorflow-based numerical methods, we track how the equilibria of the theory change when varying the electric-magnetic deformation parameter $ω$. Apart from describing various properties of different equilibria (390 in total), we show that as $ω$ is deformed, the SO(3), N=1 vacuum of the de Wit-Nicolai theory becomes equivalent to a critical point in $U(4)\ltimes\mathbb{R}^{12}$ gauged supergravity with a known uplift in IIB supergravity. The procedure employed here to obtain a new gauging with a guaranteed equilibrium is generic and allows one to obtain further admissible noncompact gaugings via $ω$-deformation, all of which have guaranteed critical points, and some of which may be novel upliftable solutions.
A procedure is described to construct generalised Scherk-Schwarz uplifts of gauged supergravities. The internal manifold, fluxes, and consistent truncation Ansatz are all derived from the embedding tensor of the lower-dimensional theory. We first describe the procedure to construct generalised Leibniz parallelisable spaces where the vector components of the frame are embedded in the adjoint representation of the gauge group, as specified by the embedding tensor. This allows us to recover the generalised Scherk-Schwarz reductions known in the literature and to prove a no-go result for the uplift of $ω$-deformed SO(p,q) gauged maximal supergravities. We then extend the construction to arbitrary generalised Leibniz parallelisable spaces, which turn out to be torus fibrations over manifolds in the class above.
We construct the first complete exceptional field theory that is based on an infinite-dimensional symmetry group. E$_9$ exceptional field theory provides a unified description of eleven-dimensional and type IIB supergravity covariant under the affine Kac-Moody symmetry of two-dimensional maximal supergravity. We present two equivalent formulations of the dynamics, which both rely on a pseudo-Lagrangian supplemented by a twisted self-duality equation. One formulation involves a minimal set of fields and gauge symmetries, which uniquely determine the entire dynamics. The other formulation extends $\mathfrak{e}_9$ by half of the Virasoro algebra and makes direct contact with the integrable structure of two-dimensional supergravity. Our results apply directly to other affine Kac-Moody groups, such as the Geroch group of general relativity.
We revisit the double copy description for linearized gravity and point out various technical issues and subtleties, associated with setting up the double copy description, including the problem of matching degrees of freedom on both sides of the double copy dictionary and the related issue of the constraint between graviton and dilaton sources. We introduce and discuss possible resolutions of these issues.
We describe a new procedure to obtain consistent backgrounds that uplift vacua and deformations of various maximal gauged supergravities by taking a known solution and performing singular limits along the moduli space of the corresponding 4-dimensional theory. We then apply this procedure to the S^3 x H^{2,2} background that provides the uplift of 4-dimensional Minkowski vacua of maximal supergravity with gauge group [SO(4) x SO(2,2)] $\ltimes$ R^{16}. We find that the newly generated vacua are generally only locally geometric and correspond to asymmetric orbifolds, Q-flux backgrounds or combinations thereof. We also provide the uplift to eleven dimensions of all the four-parameter Cremmer-Scherk-Schwarz gaugings.
We construct the scalar potential for the exceptional field theory based on the affine symmetry group E$_9$. The fields appearing in this potential live formally on an infinite-dimensional extended spacetime and transform under E$_9$ generalised diffeomorphisms. In addition to the scalar fields expected from D=2 maximal supergravity, the invariance of the potential requires the introduction of new constrained scalar fields. Other essential ingredients in the construction include the Virasoro algebra and indecomposable representations of E$_9$. Upon solving the section constraint, the potential reproduces the dynamics of either eleven-dimensional or type IIB supergravity in the presence of two isometries.
Dyonic gaugings of four-dimensional supergravity typically exhibit a richer vacuum structure compared to their purely electric counterparts, but their higher-dimensional origin often remains more mysterious. We consider a class of dyonic gaugings with gauge groups of the type (SO(p,q)xSO(p',q'))$\ltimes N$ with $N$ nilpotent. Using generalized Scherk-Schwarz reductions of exceptional field theory, we show how these four-dimensional gaugings may be consistently embedded in Type II supergravity upon compactification around products of spheres and hyperboloids. As an application, we give the explicit uplift of the N=4 AdS$_4$ vacuum of the theory with gauge group (SO(6)xSO(1,1))$\ltimes T^{12}$ into a supersymmetric AdS$_4$x$M_5$x$S^1$ S-fold solution of IIB supergravity. The internal space $M_5$ is a squashed $S^5$ preserving an SO(4)$ \subset $ SO(6) subset of its isometries.
An extended field theory is presented that captures the full SL(2) x O(6,6+n) duality group of four-dimensional half-maximal supergravities. The theory has section constraints whose two inequivalent solutions correspond to minimal D=10 supergravity and chiral half-maximal D=6 supergravity, respectively coupled to vector and tensor multiplets. The relation with O(6,6+n) (heterotic) double field theory is thoroughly discussed. Non-Abelian interactions as well as background fluxes are captured by a deformation of the generalised diffeomorphisms. Finally, making use of the SL(2) duality structure, it is shown how to generate gaugings with non-trivial de Roo-Wagemans angles via generalised Scherk-Schwarz ansaetze. Such gaugings allow for moduli stabilisation including the SL(2) dilaton.
The framework of exceptional field theory is extended by introducing consistent deformations of its generalised Lie derivative. For the first time, massive type IIA supergravity is reproduced geometrically as a solution of the section constraint. This provides a unified description of all ten- and eleven-dimensional maximal supergravities. The action of the E7 deformed theory is constructed, and reduces to those of exceptional field theory and gauged maximal supergravity in respective limits. The relation of this new framework to other approaches for generating the Romans mass non-geometrically is discussed.
A scenario of moduli stabilisation based on the interplay between closed and open string sectors is explored in a bottom-up approach. We study N=1 effective supergravities inspired by type IIB orientifold constructions that include background fluxes and non-perturbative effects. The former generate the standard flux superpotential for the axiodilaton and complex structure moduli. The latter can be induced by gaugino condensation in a non-Abelian sector of D7-branes and involve the overall Kaehler modulus of the compactification as well as matter fields. We analyse the dynamics of this coupled system and show that it is compatible with single-step moduli stabilisation in a metastable de Sitter vacuum. A novelty of the scenario is that the F-term potential suffices to generate a positive cosmological constant and to stabilise all moduli, except for a flat direction that can be either lifted by a mass term or eaten up by an anomalous U(1).
We discuss duality orbits and symplectic deformations of D=4 gauged supergravity theories, with focus on N$\ge$2. We provide a general constructive framework for computing symplectic deformations starting from a reference gauging, and apply it to many interesting examples. We prove that no continuous deformations are allowed for Fayet-Iliopoulos gaugings of the N=2 STU model and in particular that any $ω$ deformation is classically trivial. We further show that although in the N=6 truncation of SO(8) maximal supergravity the $ω$ parameter can be dualized away, in the 'twin' N=2 truncation $ω$ is preserved and a second, new deformation appears. We further provide a full classification and appropriate duality orbits of certain N=4 gauged supergravities, including all inequivalent SO(4)$^2$ gaugings and several non-compact forms.
We classify all N=2 rigid supersymmetric backgrounds in four dimensions with both Lorentzian and Euclidean signature that preserve eight real supercharges, up to discrete identifications. Among the backgrounds we find specific warpings of S^3 x R and AdS_3 x R, AdS_2 x S^2 and H^2 x S^2 with generic radii, and some more exotic geometries. We provide the generic two-derivative rigid vector and hypermultiplet actions and analyze the conditions imposed on the special Kahler and hyperkahler target spaces.
