On constructing orthogonal generalized doubly stochastic matrices

A real quadratic matrix is generalized doubly stochastic (g.d.s.) if all of its row sums and column sums equal one. We propose numerically stable methods for generating such matrices having possibly orthogonality property or/and satisfying Yang-Baxter equation (YBE). Additionally, an inverse eigenvalue problem for finding orthogonal generalized doubly stochastic matrices with prescribed eigenvalues is solved here. The tests performed in \textsl{MATLAB} illustrate our proposed algorithms and demonstrate their useful numerical properties.

Interjet Rapidity Gaps in Perturbative QCD

We discuss a formalism in which high-$p_T$ dijet rapidity gaps are identified by energy flow in the interjet region. When the gap energy, $Q_{\rm gap}$, is sufficiently large, the cross section may be computed from standard factorization theorems. For $p_T\gg Q_T\ggΛ_{\rm QCD}$, this is a two-scale perturbative problem, in which we may resum logarithms of $Q_{\rm gap}/p_T$. The cross section computed as a function of $Q_{\rm gap}$ reproduces many of the features of the Tevatron dijet gap data. The factorized cross section gives meaning to the color content of the hard scattering.

Dijet Rapidity Gaps in Photoproduction from Perturbative QCD

By defining dijet rapidity gap events according to interjet energy flow, we treat the photoproduction cross section of two high transverse momentum jets with a large intermediate rapidity region as a factorizable quantity in perturbative QCD. We show that logarithms of soft gluon energy in the interjet region can be resummed to all orders in perturbation theory. The resummed cross section depends on the eigenvalues of a set of soft anomalous dimension matrices, specific to each underlying partonic process, and on the decomposition of the scattering according to the possible patterns of hard color flow. We present a detailed discussion of both. Finally, we evaluate numerically the gap cross section and gap fraction and compare the results with ZEUS data. In the limit of low gap energy, good agreement with experiment is obtained.

Rapidity gaps and color evolution in QCD hard scattering

We discuss rapidity-gap events between two jets produced at high momentum transfer in $p$ $\bar{p}$ scattering, from the point of view of the soft energy flow into the interjet region. We define a gap cross section and, in perturbative QCD (pQCD), resum all the leading logarithms in the soft intermediate energy. We show that the numerical result from our cross section reproduces the shape of the D0 and CDF \cite{D0,CDF,D0fig} experimental data.

Energy and Color Flow in Dijet Rapidity Gaps

When rapidity gaps in high-$p_T$ dijet events are identified by energy flow in the central region, they may be calculated from factorized cross sections in perturbative QCD, up to corrections that behave as inverse powers of the central region energy. Although power-suppressed corrections may be important, a perturbative calculation of dijet rapidity gaps in ${\rm p}\bar{\rm p}$ scattering successfully reproduces the overall features observed at the Tevatron. In this formulation, the average color content of the hard scattering is well-defined. We find that hard dijet rapidity gaps in quark-antiquark scattering are not due to singlet exchange alone.

NLL Resummation for Dijet Production

We discuss threshold resummation for dijet production in hadronic collisions. Resummation to next-to-leading logarithmic (NLL) accuracy is given in terms of an anomalous dimension matrix for each partonic subprocess involved.

Evolution of Color Exchange in QCD Hard Scattering

In QCD hard scattering cross sections, the color content of the underlying hard scattering evolves with a factorization scale. This evolution is controlled by an anomalous dimension matrix, specific to each hard-scattering reaction. Anomalous dimensions are determined from the renormalization of products of ordered exponentials of the gauge field, which describe the coherent radiation of gluons by incoming hadrons and the observed jets or particles of the final state. The anomalous dimensions depend on the kinematics of the underlying hard scattering, but are free of collinear singularities. A number of these matrices are available in the literature. Here, we exhibit one-loop mixing matrices for the full list of $2 \to 2$ reactions involving light quarks and gluons. The eight-by-eight anomalous dimension matrix for gluon-gluon scattering shows a simplified structure in the basis corresponding to definite color exchange in the $t$-channel.

Threshold Resummation for Dijet Cross Sections

We construct dijet differential cross sections at large momentum transfer, in which threshold logarithms have been summed to all orders in perturbation theory. This extends previous work on heavy quark production, by treating collinear singularities associated with hard, massless partons in the final state. The resummed corrections enable us to define, in the sense of factorization, the underlying color exchange mechanism. The influence of color exchange on the resummed cross section is contained in the eigenvalues and eigenvectors of an anomalous dimension matrix, which describes the factorization of coherent soft gluons from the hard scattering. The precise formulas depend on the partonic scattering angles and energies, as well as on the method used to define the jets in the final state. For cone dijets at fixed invariant mass, we find leading logarithmic corrections that, like those in the Drell-Yan process, are positive, and which grow with increasing dijet invariant mass. Other choices of dijet cross section can give, however, qualitatively different behavior, even at leading logarithm.

Power Corrections and Nonlocal Operators

We discuss power corrections to infrared safe cross sections and event shapes, and identify a nonperturbative function that governs 1/Q corrections to these quantities.
