Restricted volumes of effective divisors

We study the restricted volume of effective divisors, its properties and the relationship with the related notion of reduced volume, defined via multiplier ideals, and with the asymptotic intersection number. We build upon the fundamental work of Lazarsfeld and Mustata relating the restricted volume of big divisors to the volume of the associated Okounkov body. We extend their constructions and results to the case of effective divisors, recovering some results of Kaveh and Khovanskii, proving a Fujita-type approximation in this larger setting and studying the restricted volume function. In order to relate the reduced volume and the asymptotic intersection number we investigate a boundedness property of asymptotic multiplier ideals and prove it holds, for instance, for finitely generated divisors. In this way we obtain also a complete picture for the canonical divisor of an arbitrary smooth projective variety and for nef divisors on varieties of dimension at most 3.

Rational connectedness modulo the Non-nef locus

It is well known that a smooth projective Fano variety is rationally connected. Recently Zhang (and later Hacon and McKernan as a special case of their work on the Shokurov RC-conjecture) proved that the same conclusion holds for a klt pair $(X,\D)$ such that $-(K_X+\D)$ is big and nef. We prove here a natural generalization of the above result by dropping the nefness assumption. Namely we show that a klt pair $(X,\D)$ such that $-(K_X+\D)$ is big is rationally connected modulo the non-nef locus of $-(K_X+\D)$. This result is a consequence of a more general structure theorem for arbitrary pairs $(X,\D)$ with $-(K_X+\D)$ pseff.

Generalized Demailly-Semple jet bundles and holomorphic mappings into complex manifolds

Motivated by the Green-Griffiths conjecture, we study maximal rank holomorphic maps from $\C^p$ into complex manifolds. When $p>1$ such maps should in principle be more tractable than entire curves. We extend to this setting the jet-bundles techniques introduced by Semple, Green-Griffiths and Demailly. Our main application is the non-existence of maximal rank holomorphic maps from $\C^2$ into the very general degree $d$ hypersurface in $\bP^4$, as soon as $d\geq 93.$

On the uniformity of the Iitaka fibration

We study pluricanonical systems on smooth projective varieties of positive Kodaira dimension, following the approach of Hacon-McKernan, Takayama and Tsuji succesfully used in the case of varieties of general type. We prove a uniformity result for the Iitaka fibration of smooth projective varieties of positive Kodaira dimension, provided that the base of the Iitaka fibration is not uniruled, the variation of the fibration is maximal, and the generic fiber has a good minimal model.

Nodal curves with general moduli on K3 surfaces

We investigate the modular properties of nodal curves on a low genus K3 surface. We prove that a general genus g curve C is the normalization of a d-nodal curve X sitting on a primitively polarized K3 surface S of degree 2p-2, for p any integer between 3 and 11 and g = p - d between 2 and p. The proof is based on a local deformation-theoretic analysis of the map from the stack of pairs (S,X) to the moduli space of curves of genus g that associates to X the isomorphism class [C] of its normalization.

On families of rational curves in the Hilbert square of a surface (with an Appendix by Edoardo Sernesi)

Under natural hypotheses we give an upper bound on the dimension of families of singular curves with hyperelliptic normalizations on a surface S with p_g(S) >0 via the study of the associated families of rational curves in Hilb^2(S). We use this result to prove the existence of nodal curves of geometric genus 3 with hyperelliptic normalizations, on a general K3 surface, thus obtaining specific 2-dimensional families of rational curves in its Hilbert square. We describe two infinite series of examples of general, primitively polarized K3's such that their Hilbert squares contain a IP^2 or a threefold birational to a IP^1-bundle over a K3. We discuss some consequences on the Mori cone of the Hilbert square of a general K3.

Singular curves on a K3 surface and linear series on their normalizations

In this paper, we study the Brill-Noether theory of the normalizations of singular, irreducible curves on a $K3$ surface. We introduce a {\em singular} Brill-Noether number $ρ_{sing}$ and show that if the Picard group of the K3 surface is ${\mathbb Z} [L]$, there are no $g^r_d$'s on the normalizations of irreducible curves in $|L|$, provided that $ρ_{sing} <0$. We give examples showing the sharpness of this result. We then focus on the case of {\em hyperelliptic normalizations}, and classify linear systems $|L|$ containing irreducible nodal curves with hyperelliptic normalizations, for $ρ_{sing}<0$, without any assumption on its Picard group.

The Green Conjecture for Exceptional Curves on a K3 Surface

We use the Brill-Noether theory to prove the Green conjecture for exceptional curves on K3 surfaces. Such curves count among the few ones having Clifford dimension at least three. We obtain our result by adopting an infinitesimal approach due to Pareschi, and using a degenerate version of a theorem due to Hirschowitz-Ramanan-Voisin.

On the logarithmic Kobayashi conjecture

We study the hyperbolicity of the log variety $(\mathbb{P}^n, X)$, where $X$ is a very general hypersurface of degree $d\geq 2n+1$ (which is the bound predicted by the Kobayashi conjecture). Using a positivity result for the sheaf of (twisted) logarithmic vector fields, which may be of independent interest, we show that any log-subvariety of $(\mathbb{P}^n, X)$ is of log-general type, give a new proof of the algebraic hyperbolicity of $(\mathbb{P}^n, X)$, and exclude the existence of maximal rank families of entire curves in the complement of the universal degree $d$ hypersurface. Moreover, we prove that, as in the compact case, the algebraic hyperbolicity of a log-variety is a necessary condition for the metric one.

Nondeformability of entire curves in projective hypersurfaces of high degree

In this article, we prove that there does not exist a family of entire curves in the universal family of hypersurfaces of degree $d\geq 2n$ in the complex projective space ${\mathbb P}^n$. This can be seen as a weak version of the Kobayashi conjecture asserting that a general projective hypersurface of high degree is hyperbolic in the sense of Kobayashi.

Rational curves on general projective hypersurfaces

Let $k$ be an integer such that $1\leq k\leq n-5$, and $X_{2n-2-k}\subset \mathbf P^n$ a general projective hypersurface of degree $d=2n-2-k$. In this paper we prove that the only $k$-dimensional subvariety $Y$ of $X_{2n-2-k}$ having geometric genus zero is the one covered by the lines. As an immediate corollary we obtain that, for $n>5$, the general $X_{2n-3}\subset \mathbf P^n$, contains no rational curves of degree $δ>1$.

Subvarieties of general type on a general projective hypersurface

We study subvarieties of a general projective degree $d$ hypersurface $X_d\subset \mathbf P^n$. Our main theorem, which improves previous results of L. Ein and C. Voisin, implies in particular the following sharp corollary: any subvariety of a general hypersurface $X_{d}\subset {\mathbf P}^n$, for $n\geq 6$ and $d\geq 2n-2$, is of general type.
