$\mathcal{N} = 2$ Orbi-S-Folds

We introduce a new class of non-compact backgrounds of Type IIB string theory preserving eight supercharges by combining S-folds and non-perturbative 7-branes wrapping orbifolds, and study the four-dimensional superconformal field theories arising at low energy on $D3$-branes probing them. We draw a precise correspondence between this setup and the torus compactification of six-dimensional orbi-instanton theories with a Stiefel-Whitney twist, and use it to determine the main features of such strongly-coupled systems, like central charges, spectra of Coulomb-branch operators, networks of Higgs-branch flows. Finally, with the aim to improve our understanding of the landscape of $\mathcal{N}=2$ superconformal field theories, and possibly to extend their classification beyond rank two, we provide a detailed catalogue of all the rank-three theories that our framework gives access to.

Beginners lectures on flux compactifications and related Swampland topics

These lecture notes provide a pedagogical introduction, with exercises, to the techniques used in attempts to construct vacua with stabilised moduli in string theory. The reader is only assumed to have a basic knowledge of general relativity, geometry and field theory. We emphasize physical arguments and focus on the latest developments involving the Swampland program that point to a tension for the existence of AdS vacua with small extra dimensions or dS vacua with parametric control. We include a brief summary of the current status of these thorny issues. Unlike many other reviews we make almost no use of the technicalities associated to supersymmetric geometries. These notes are largely based on lectures given at the CERN Winter School on Supergravity, Strings and Gauge Theory and in the Tehran School on Swampland Program held in the summer of 2022.

6d SCFTs, Center-Flavor Symmetries, and Stiefel--Whitney Compactifications

The center-flavor symmetry of a gauge theory specifies the global form of consistent gauge and flavor bundle background field configurations. For 6d gauge theories which arise from a tensor branch deformation of a superconformal field theory (SCFT), we determine the global structure of such background field configurations, including possible continuous Abelian symmetry and R-symmetry bundles. Proceeding to the conformal fixed point, this provides a prescription for reading off the global form of the continuous factors of the zero-form symmetry, including possible non-trivial mixing between flavor and R-symmetry. As an application, we show that this global structure leads to a large class of 4d $\mathcal{N} = 2$ SCFTs obtained by compactifying on a $T^2$ in the presence of a topologically non-trivial flat flavor bundle characterized by a 't Hooft magnetic flux. The resulting "Stiefel--Whitney twisted" compactifications realize several new infinite families of 4d $\mathcal{N} = 2$ SCFTs, and also furnish a 6d origin for a number of recently discovered rank one and two 4d $\mathcal{N} = 2$ SCFTs.

Reflections on the Matter of 3d $\mathcal{N} = 1$ Vacua and Local $Spin(7)$ Compactifications

We use Higgs bundles to study the 3d $\mathcal{N} = 1$ vacua obtained from M-theory compactified on a local $Spin(7)$ space given as a four-manifold $M_4$ of ADE singularities with further generic enhancements in the singularity type along one-dimensional subspaces. There can be strong quantum corrections to the massless degrees of freedom in the low energy effective field theory, but topologically robust quantities such as "parity" anomalies are still calculable. We show how geometric reflections of the compactification space descend to 3d reflections and discrete symmetries. The "parity" anomalies of the effective field theory descend from topological data of the compactification. The geometric perspective also allows us to track various perturbative and non-perturbative corrections to the 3d effective field theory. We also provide some explicit constructions of well-known 3d theories, including those which arise as edge modes of 4d topological insulators, and 3d $\mathcal{N} = 1$ analogs of grand unified theories. An additional result of our analysis is that we are able to track the spectrum of extended objects and their transformations under higher-form symmetries.

Geometric Unification of Higgs Bundle Vacua

Higgs bundles are a central tool used to study a range of intersecting brane systems in string compactifications. Solutions to the internal gauge theory equations of motion for the corresponding worldvolume theories of branes give rise to different low energy effective field theories. This has been heavily used in the study of M-theory on local $G_2$ spaces and F-theory on local elliptically fibered Calabi-Yau fourfolds. In this paper we show that the 3D $\mathcal{N} = 1$ effective field theory defined by M-theory on a local $Spin(7)$ space unifies the Higgs bundle data associated with 4D $\mathcal{N} = 1$ M- and F-theory vacua. This 3D system appears as an interface with finite thickness between different 4D vacua. We develop the general formalism of M-theory on such local $Spin(7)$ spaces, and build explicit interpolating solutions. This provides a complementary local gauge theory analysis of a recently proposed approach to constructing $Spin(7)$ spaces from generalized connected sums.

S-folds, String Junctions, and 4D $\mathcal{N} = 2$ SCFTs

S-folds are a non-perturbative generalization of orientifold 3-planes which figure prominently in the construction of 4D $\mathcal{N} = 3$ SCFTs and have also recently been used to realize examples of 4D $\mathcal{N} = 2$ SCFTs. In this paper we develop a general procedure for reading off the flavor symmetry experienced by D3-branes probing 7-branes in the presence of an S-fold. We develop an S-fold generalization of orientifold projection which applies to non-perturbative string junctions. This procedure leads to a different 4D flavor symmetry algebra depending on whether the S-fold supports discrete torsion. We also show that this same procedure allows us to read off admissible representations of the flavor symmetry in the associated 4D $\mathcal{N} = 2$ SCFTs. Furthermore this provides a prescription for how to define F-theory in the presence of S-folds with discrete torsion.

Yukawa Hierarchies in Global F-theory Models

We argue that global F-theory compactifications to four dimensions generally exhibit higher rank Yukawa matrices from multiple geometric contributions known as Yukawa points. The holomorphic couplings furthermore have large hierarchies for generic complex structure moduli. Unlike local considerations, the compact setup realizes these features all through geometry, and requires no instanton corrections. As an example, we consider a concrete toy model with $SU(5) \times U(1)$ gauge symmetry. From the geometry, we find two Yukawa points for the ${\bf 10}_{-2} \, \bar{\bf 5}_6 \, \bar{\bf 5}_{-4}$ coupling, producing a rank two Yukawa matrix. Our methods allow us to track all complex structure dependencies of the holomorphic couplings and study the ratio numerically. This reveals hierarchies of ${\cal O}(10^5)$ and larger on a full-dimensional subspace of the moduli space.

T-Branes and $G_2$ Backgrounds

Compactification of M- / string theory on manifolds with $G_2$ structure yields a wide variety of 4D and 3D physical theories. We analyze the local geometry of such compactifications as captured by a gauge theory obtained from a three-manifold of ADE singularities. Generic gauge theory solutions include a non-trivial gauge field flux as well as normal deformations to the three-manifold captured by non-commuting matrix coordinates, a signal of T-brane phenomena. Solutions of the 3D gauge theory on a three-manifold are given by a deformation of the Hitchin system on a marked Riemann surface which is fibered over an interval. We present explicit examples of such backgrounds as well as the profile of the corresponding zero modes for localized chiral matter. We also provide a purely algebraic prescription for characterizing localized matter for such T-brane configurations. The geometric interpretation of this gauge theory description provides a generalization of twisted connected sums with codimension seven singularities at localized regions of the geometry. It also indicates that geometric codimension six singularities can sometimes support 4D chiral matter due to physical structure "hidden" in T-branes.

The two faces of T-branes

We establish a brane-brane duality connecting T-branes to collections of ordinary D-branes. T-branes are intrinsically non-Abelian brane configurations with worldvolume flux, whereas their duals consist of Abelian brane systems that encode the T-brane data in their curvature. We argue that the new Abelian picture provides a reliable description of T-branes when their non-Abelian fields have large expectation values in string units. To confirm this duality, we match the energy density and all the electromagnetic couplings on both sides. A key step in this derivation is a non-trivial factorization of the symmetrized-trace non-Abelian Dirac-Born-Infeld action when evaluated on solutions of the $α'$-corrected Hitchin system.

Compact G2 holonomy spaces from SU(3) structures

We construct novel classes of compact G2 spaces from lifting type IIA flux backgrounds with O6 planes. There exists an extension of IIA Calabi-Yau orientifolds for which some of the D6 branes (required to solve the RR tadpole) are dissolved in $F_2$ fluxes. The backreaction of these fluxes deforms the Calabi-Yau manifold into a specific class of SU(3)-structure manifolds. The lift to M-theory again defines compact G2 manifolds, which in case of toroidal orbifolds are a twisted generalisation of the Joyce construction. This observation also allows a clear identification of the moduli space of a warped compactification with fluxes. We provide a few explicit examples, of which some can be constructed from T-dualising known IIB orientifolds with fluxes. Finally we discuss supersymmetry breaking in this context and suggest that the purely geometric picture in M-theory could provide a simpler setting to address some of the consistency issues of moduli stabilisation and de Sitter uplifting.

Pixelated Dark Energy

We study the phenomenology of a recent string construction with a quantum mechanically stable dark energy. A mild supersymmetry protects the vacuum energy but also allows $O(10 - 100)$ TeV scale superpartner masses. The construction is holographic in the sense that the 4D spacetime is generated from "pixels" originating from five-branes wrapped over metastable five-cycles of the compactification. The cosmological constant scales as $Λ\sim 1/N$ in the pixel number. An instability in the construction leads to cosmic expansion. This also causes more five-branes to wind up in the geometry, leading to a slowly decreasing cosmological constant which we interpret as an epoch of inflation followed by (pre-)heating when a rare event occurs in which the number of pixels increases by an order one fraction. The sudden appearance of radiation triggers an exponential increase in the number of pixels. Dark energy has a time varying equation of state with $w_a=-3Ω_{m,0}(1+w_0)/2$, which is compatible with current bounds, and could be constrained further by future data releases. The pixelated nature of the Universe also implies a large-$l$ cutoff on the angular power spectrum of cosmological observables with $l_{\rm max} \sim O(N)$. We also use this pixel description to study the thermodynamics of de Sitter space, finding rough agreement with effective field theory considerations.

F-theory and Dark Energy

Motivated by its potential use as a starting point for solving various cosmological constant problems, we study F-theory compactified on the warped product $\mathbb{R}_{\text{time}} \times S^3 \times Y_{8}$ where $Y_{8}$ is a $Spin(7)$ manifold, and the $S^3$ factor is the target space of an $SU(2)$ Wess--Zumino--Witten (WZW) model at level $N$. Reduction to M-theory exploits the abelian duality of this WZW model to an $S^3 / \mathbb{Z}_N$ orbifold. In the large $N$ limit, the untwisted sector is captured by 11D supergravity. The local dynamics of intersecting 7-branes in the $Spin(7)$ geometry is controlled by a Donaldson--Witten twisted gauge theory coupled to defects. At late times, the system is governed by a 1D quantum mechanics system with a ground state annihilated by two real supercharges, which in four dimensions would appear as "$\mathcal{N} = 1/2$ supersymmetry" on a curved background. This leads to a cancellation of zero point energies in the 4D field theory but a split mass spectrum for superpartners of order $Δm_\text{4D} \sim \sqrt{M_\text{IR} M_\text{UV}}$ specified by the IR and UV cutoffs of the model. This is suggestively close to the TeV scale in some scenarios. The classical 4D geometry has an intrinsic instability which can produce either a collapsing or expanding Universe, the latter providing a promising starting point for a number of cosmological scenarios. The resulting 1D quantum mechanics in the time direction also provides an appealing starting point for a more detailed study of quantum cosmology.

The Type IIA Flux Potential, 4-forms and Freed-Witten anomalies

We compute the full classical 4d scalar potential of type IIA Calabi-Yau orientifolds in the presence of fluxes and D6-branes. We show that it can be written as a bilinear form $V = Z^{AB} ρ_Aρ_B$, where the $ρ_A$ are in one-to-one correspondence with the 4-form fluxes of the 4d effective theory. The $ρ_A$ only depend on the internal fluxes, the axions and the topological data of the compactification, and are fully determined by the Freed-Witten anomalies of branes that appear as 4d string defects. The quadratic form $Z^{AB}$ only depends on the saxionic partners of these axions. In general, the $ρ_A$ can be seen as the basic invariants under the discrete shift symmetries of the 4d effective theory, and therefore the building blocks of any flux-dependent quantity. All these polynomials may be obtained by derivation from one of them, associated to a universal 4-form. The standard N=1 supergravity flux superpotential is uniquely determined from this {\it master polynomial}, and vice versa.

Flux Flattening in Axion Monodromy Inflation

String theory models of axion monodromy inflation exhibit scalar potentials which are quadratic for small values of the inflaton field and evolve to a more complicated function for large field values. Oftentimes the large field behaviour is gentler than quadratic, lowering the tensor-to-scalar ratio. This effect, known as flattening, has been observed in the string theory context through the properties of the DBI+CS D-brane action. We revisit such flattening effects in type IIB flux compactifications with mobile D7-branes, with the inflaton identified with the D7-brane position. We observe that, with a generic choice of background fluxes, flattening effects are larger than previously observed, allowing to fit these models within current experimental bounds. In particular, we compute the cosmological observables in scenarios compatible with closed-string moduli stabilisation, finding tensor-to-scalar ratios as low as r ~ 0.04. These are models of single field inflation in which the inflaton is much lighter than the other scalars through a mild tuning of the compactification data.

Partition functions of web diagrams with an O7$^-$-plane

We consider the computation of the topological string partition function for 5-brane web diagrams with an O7$^-$-plane. Since upon quantum resolution of the orientifold plane these diagrams become non-toric web diagrams without the orientifold we are able to apply the topological vertex to obtain the Nekrasov partition function of the corresponding 5d theory. We apply this procedure to the case of 5d $SU(N)$ theories with one hypermultiplet in the antisymmetric representation and to the case of 5d pure $USp(2N)$ theories. For these cases we discuss the dictionary between parameters and moduli of the 5d gauge theory and lengths of 5-branes in the web diagram and moreover we perform comparison of the results obtained via application of the topological vertex and the one obtained via localisation techniques, finding in all instances we consider perfect agreement.

Open string multi-branched and Kahler potentials

We consider type II string compactifications on Calabi-Yau orientifolds with fluxes and D-branes, and analyse the F-term scalar potential that simultaneously involves closed and open string modes. In type IIA models with D6-branes such potential can be directly computed by integrating out Minkowski three-forms. The result shows a multi-branched structure along the space of lifted open string moduli, in which discrete shifts in special Lagrangian and Wilson line deformations are compensated by changes in the RR flux quanta. The same sort of discrete shift symmetries are present in the superpotential and constrain the Kahler potential. As for the latter, inclusion of open string moduli breaks the factorisation between complex structure and Kahler moduli spaces. Nevertheless, the 4d Kahler metrics display a set of interesting relations that allow to rederive the scalar potential analytically. Similar results hold for type IIB flux compactifications with D7-brane Wilson lines.

Fitting fermion masses and mixings in F-theory GUTs

We analyse the structure of Yukawa couplings in local SU(5) F-theory models with $E_7$ enhancement. These models are the minimal setting in which the whole flavour structure for the MSSM charged fermions is encoded in a small region of the entire compactification space. In this setup the $E_7$ symmetry is broken down to SU(5) by means of a 7-brane T-brane background, and further to the MSSM gauge group by means of a hypercharge flux that also implements doublet-triplet splitting. At tree-level only one family of quarks and charged leptons is massive, while the other two obtain hierarchically smaller masses when stringy non-perturbative effects are taken into account. We find that there is a unique $E_7$ model with such hierarchical flavour structure. The relative simplicity of the model allows to perform the computation of Yukawa couplings for a region of its parameter space wider than previous attempts, obtaining realistic fermion masses and mixings for large parameter regions. Our results are also valid for local models with $E_8$ enhancement, pointing towards a universal structure to describe realistic fermion masses within this framework.

Yukawa hierarchies at the point of $E_8$ in F-theory

We analyse the structure of Yukawa couplings in local SU(5) F-theory models with $E_8$ enhancement. In this setting the $E_8$ symmetry is broken down to SU(5) by a 7-brane configuration described by T-branes, all the Yukawa couplings are generated in the vicinity of a point and only one family of quarks and leptons is massive at tree-level. The other two families obtain their masses when non-perturbative effects are taken into account, being hierarchically lighter than the third family. However, and contrary to previous results, we find that this hierarchy of fermion masses is not always appropriate to reproduce measured data. We find instead that different T-brane configurations breaking $E_8$ to SU(5) give rise to distinct hierarchical patterns for the holomorphic Yukawa couplings. Only some of these patterns allow to fit the observed fermion masses with reasonable local model parameter values, adding further constraints to the construction of F-theory GUTs. We consider an $E_8$ model where such appropriate hierarchy is realised and compute its physical Yukawas, showing that realistic charged fermions masses can indeed be obtained in this case.
