Towards a Muon Collider

A muon collider would enable the big jump ahead in energy reach that is needed for a fruitful exploration of fundamental interactions. The challenges of producing muon collisions at high luminosity and 10 TeV centre of mass energy are being investigated by the recently-formed International Muon Collider Collaboration. This Review summarises the status and the recent advances on muon colliders design, physics and detector studies. The aim is to provide a global perspective of the field and to outline directions for future work.

Angular correlation of the two gamma rays produced in the thermal neutron capture on gadolinium-155 and gadolinium-157

The ANNRI-Gd collaboration studied in detail the single $γ$-ray spectrum produced from the thermal neutron capture on $^{155}$Gd and $^{157}$Gd in our previous publications. Gadolinium targets were exposed to a neutron beam provided by the Japan Spallation Neutron Source (JSNS) in J-PARC, Japan. In the present analysis, one new additional coaxial germanium crystal was used in the analysis in combination with the fourteen germanium crystals in the cluster detectors to study the angular correlation of the two $γ$ rays emitted in the same neutron capture. We present for the first time angular correlation functions for two $γ$ rays produced during the electromagnetic cascade transitions in the (n, $γ$) reactions on $^{\rm 155}$Gd and $^{\rm 157}$Gd. As expected, we observe the mild angular correlations for the strong, but rare transitions from the resonance state to the two energy levels of known spin-parities. Contrariwise, we observe negligibly small angular correlations for arbitrary pairs of two $γ$ rays produced in the majority of cascade transitions from the resonance state to the dense continuum states.

Muon Collider Physics Summary

The perspective of designing muon colliders with high energy and luminosity, which is being investigated by the International Muon Collider Collaboration, has triggered a growing interest in their physics reach. We present a concise summary of the muon colliders potential to explore new physics, leveraging on the unique possibility of combining high available energy with very precise measurements.

On a new statistical technique for the real-time recognition of ultra-low multiplicity astrophysical neutrino burst

The real-time recognition of neutrino signals from astrophysical objects with very-low false alarm rate and short-latency, is crucial to perform multi-messenger detection, especially in the case of distant core-collapse supernovae accessible with the next generation of large-scale neutrino telescopes. The current time-based selection algorithms implemented in operating online monitors depend mainly on the number of events (multiplicity) detected in a fixed time window, under the hypothesis of Poisson-distributed background. However, these methods are not capable of exploiting the time profile discrepancies between the expected supernova neutrino burst and the stationary background. In this paper we propose a new general and flexible technique (beta filter method) which provides specific decision boundaries on the cluster multiplicity-duration plane, guaranteeing the desired false alarm rate in an analytical way. The performance is evaluated using the injection of a general purpose SN-like signal on top of realistic background rates in current detectors. An absolute gain in efficiency of up to $\sim 80\%$ is achieved compared with the standard techniques, and a new ultra-low multiplicity region is unveiled.

Gamma Ray Spectra from Thermal Neutron Capture on Gadolinium-155 and Natural Gadolinium

Natural gadolinium is widely used for its excellent thermal neutron capture cross section, because of its two major isotopes: $^{\rm 155}$Gd and $^{\rm 157}$Gd. We measured the $γ$-ray spectra produced from the thermal neutron capture on targets comprising a natural gadolinium film and enriched $^{\rm 155}$Gd (in Gd$_{2}$O$_{3}$ powder) in the energy range from 0.11 MeV to 8.0 MeV, using the ANNRI germanium spectrometer at MLF, J-PARC. The freshly analysed data of the $^{\rm 155}$Gd(n, $γ$) reaction are used to improve our previously developed model (ANNRI-Gd model) for the $^{\rm 157}$Gd(n, $γ$) reaction, and its performance confirmed with the independent data from the $^{\rm nat}$Gd(n, $γ$) reaction. This article completes the development of an efficient Monte Carlo model required to simulate and analyse particle interactions involving the thermal neutron captures on gadolinium in any relevant future experiments.

Research and Development for Near Detector Systems Towards Long Term Evolution of Ultra-precise Long-baseline Neutrino Experiments

With the discovery of non-zero value of $θ_{13}$ mixing angle, the next generation of long-baseline neutrino (LBN) experiments offers the possibility of obtaining statistically significant samples of muon and electron neutrinos and anti-neutrinos with large oscillation effects. In this document we intend to highlight the importance of Near Detector facilities in LBN experiments to both constrain the systematic uncertainties affecting oscillation analyses but also to perform, thanks to their close location, measurements of broad benefit for LBN physics goals. A strong European contribution to these efforts is possible.

Gamma Ray Spectrum from Thermal Neutron Capture on Gadolinium-157

We have measured the $γ$-ray energy spectrum from the thermal neutron capture, ${}^{157}$Gd$(n,γ){}^{158}$Gd, on an enriched $^{157}$Gd target (Gd$_{2}$O$_{3}$) in the energy range from 0.11 MeV up to about 8 MeV. The target was placed inside the germanium spectrometer of the ANNRI detector at J-PARC and exposed to a neutron beam from the Japan Spallation Neutron Source (JSNS). Radioactive sources ($^{60}$Co, $^{137}$Cs, and $^{152}$Eu) and the reaction $^{35}$Cl($n$,$γ$) were used to determine the spectrometer's detection efficiency for $γ$ rays at energies from 0.3 to 8.5 MeV. Using a Geant4-based Monte Carlo simulation of the detector and based on our data, we have developed a model to describe the $γ$-ray spectrum from the thermal ${}^{157}$Gd($n$,$γ$) reaction. While we include the strength information of 15 prominent peaks above 5 MeV and associated peaks below 1.6 MeV from our data directly into the model, we rely on the theoretical inputs of nuclear level density and the photon strength function of ${}^{158}$Gd to describe the continuum $γ$-ray spectrum from the ${}^{157}$Gd($n$,$γ$) reaction. Our model combines these two components. The results of the comparison between the observed $γ$-ray spectra from the reaction and the model are reported in detail.

New results from an extensive aging test on bakelite Resistive Plate Chambers

We present recent results of an extensive aging test, performed at the CERN Gamma Irradiation Facility on two single--gap RPC prototypes, developed for the LHCb Muon System. With a method based on a model describing the behaviour of an RPC under high particle flux conditions, we have periodically measured the electrode resistance R of the two RPC prototypes over three years: we observe a large spontaneous increase of R with time, from the initial value of about 2 MOhm to more than 250 MOhm. A corresponding degradation of the RPC rate capabilities, from more than 3 kHz/cm2 to less than 0.15 kHz/cm2 is also found.

First results from an aging test of a prototype RPC for the LHCb Muon System

Recent results of an aging test performed at the CERN Gamma Irradiation Facility on a single--gap RPC prototype developed for the LHCb Muon System are presented. The results are based on an accumulated charge of about 0.45 C/cm$^2$, corresponding to about 4 years of LHCb running at the highest background rate. The performance of the chamber has been studied under several photon flux values exploiting a muon beam. A degradation of the rate capability above 1 kHz/cm$^2$ is observed, which can be correlated to a sizeable increase of resistivity of the chamber plates. An increase of the chamber dark current is also observed. The chamber performance is found to fulfill the LHCb operation requirements.

Preliminary results of an aging test of RPC chambers for the LHCb Muon System

The preliminary results of an aging test performed at the CERN Gamma Irradiation Facility on a single--gap RPC prototype developed for the LHCb Muon System are presented. The results are based on an accumulated charge density of 0.42 C/cm^2, corresponding to about 4 years of LHCb running at the highest background rate. We observe a rise in the dark current and noise measured with source off. The current drawn with source on steadily decreased, possibly indicating an increase of resistivity of the chamber plates. The performance of the chamber, studied with a muon beam under several photon flux values, is found to still fulfill the LHCb operation requirements.
