Nonlinear random perturbations of Reaction-Diffusion Equations

This paper investigates the well-posedness and small-noise asymptotics of a class of stochastic partial differential equations defined on a bounded domain of $\mathbb{R}^d$, where the diffusion coefficient depends nonlinearly and non-locally on the solution through a conditional expectation. The reaction term is assumed to be merely continuous and to satisfy a quasi-dissipativity condition, without requiring any growth bounds or local Lipschitz continuity. This setting introduces significant analytical challenges due to the temporal non-locality and the lack of regularity assumptions. Our results represent a substantial advance in the study of nonlinear stochastic perturbations of SPDEs, extending the framework developed in a previous paper.

On approximations of stochastic optimal control problems with an application to climate equations

The paper is devoted to the optimal control of a system with two time-scales, in a regime when the limit equation is not of averaging type but, in the spirit of Wong-Zakai principle, it is a stochastic differential equation for the slow variable, with noise emerging from the fast one. It proves that it is possible to control the slow variable by acting only on the fast scales. The concrete problem, of interest for climate research, is embedded into an abstract framework in Hilbert spaces, with a stochastic process driven by an approximation of a given noise. The principle established here is that convergence of the uncontrolled problem is sufficient for convergence of both the optimal costs and the optimal controls. This target is reached using Girsanov transform and the representation of the optimal cost and the optimal controls using a Forward Backward System. A challenge in this program is represented by the generality considered here of unbounded control actions.

Space Regularity of Evolution Equations Driven by Rough Paths

In this paper, we consider the linear evolution equation $dy(t)=Ay(t)dt+Gy(t)dx(t)$, where $A$ is a closed operator, associated to a semigroup, with good smoothing effects in a Banach space $E$, $x$ is a nonsmooth path, which is $η$-Hölder continuous for some $η\in (1/3,1/2]$, and $G$ is a non-smoothing linear operator on $E$. We prove that the Cauchy problem associated with the previous equation admits a unique mild solution and we also show that the solution increases the regularity of the initial datum as soon as time evolves. Then, we show that the mild solution is also an integral solution and this allows us to prove a Itô formula.

Singular limit of BSDEs and optimal control of two scale systems with jumps in infinite dimensional spaces

The paper is devoted to a stochastic optimal control problem for a two scale, infinite dimensional, stochastic system. The state of the system consists of slow and fast component and its evolution is driven by both continuous Wiener noises and discontinuous Poisson-type noises. The presence of discontinuous noises is the main feature of the present work. We use the theory of backward stochastic differential equations (BSDEs) to prove that, as the speed of the fast component diverges, the value function of the control problem converges to the solution of a reduced forward backward system that, in turn, is related to a reduced stochastic optimal control problem.

Nonlinear random perturbations of PDEs and quasi-linear equations in Hilbert spaces depending on a small parameter

We study a class of quasi-linear parabolic equations defined on a separable Hilbert space, depending on a small parameter in front of the second order term. Through the nonlinear semigroup associated with such equation, we introduce the corresponding SPDE and we study the asymptotic behavior of its solutions, depending on the small parameter. We show that a large deviations principle holds and we give an explicit description of the action functional.

Regularity results for non-linear Young equations and applications

In this paper we provide sufficient conditions which ensure that the non-linear equation $dy(t)=Ay(t)dt+σ(y(t))dx(t)$, $t\in(0,T]$, with $y(0)=ψ$ and $A$ being an unbounded operator, admits a unique mild solution which is classical, i.e., $y(t)\in D(A)$ for any $t\in (0,T]$, and we compute the blow-up rate of the norm of $y(t)$ as $t\rightarrow 0^+$. We stress that the regularity of $y$ is independent on the smoothness of the initial datum $ψ$, which in general does not belong to $D(A)$. As a consequence we get an integral representation of the mild solution $y$ which allows us to prove a chain rule formula for smooth functions of $y$ and necessary conditions for the invariance of hyperplanes with respect to the non-linear evolution equation.

Fokker-Planck equations with terminal condition and related McKean probabilistic representation

Usually Fokker-Planck type partial differential equations (PDEs) are well-posed if the initial condition is specified. In this paper, alternatively, we consider the inverse problem which consists in prescribing final data: in particular we give sufficient conditions for existence and uniqueness. In the second part of the paper we provide a probabilistic representation of those PDEs in the form a solution of a McKean type equation corresponding to the time-reversal dynamics of a diffusion process.

Partial smoothing of delay transition semigroups acting on special functions

It is well known that the transition semigroup of an Ornstein Uhlenbeck process with delay is not strong Feller for small times, so it has no regularizing effects when acting on bounded and continuous functions. In this paper we study regularizing properties of this transition semigroup when acting on special functions of the past trajectory. With this regularizing property, we are able to prove existence and uniqueness of a mild solution for a special class of semilinear Kolmogorov equations; we apply these results to a stochastic optimal control problem.

Singular Limit of Two Scale Stochastic Optimal Control Problems in Infinite Dimensions by Vanishing Noise Regularization

In this paper we study the limit of the value function for a two-scale, infinite-dimensional, stochastic controlled system with cylindrical noise and possibly degenerate diffusion. The limit is represented as the value function of a new reduced control problem (on a reduced state space). The presence of a cylindrical noise prevents representation of the limit by viscosity solutions of HJB equations, while degeneracy of diffusion coefficients prevents representation as a classical BSDE. We use a vanishing noise regularization technique.

Multiscale Linear-Quadratic Stochastic Optimal Control With Multiplicative Noise

We investigate the asymptotic properties of a finite-time horizon linear-quadratic optimal control problem driven by a multiscale stochastic process with multiplicative Brownian noise. We approach the problem by considering the associated differential Riccati equation and reformulating it as a classical and deterministic singular perturbation problem. Asymptotic properties of this deterministic problem can be gathered from the well-known Tikhonov Theorem. Consequently, we are able to propose two approximation methods to the value function of the stochastic optimal control problem. The first is by constructing an approximately optimal control process whilst the second is by finding the direct limit to the value function. Both approximation methods rely on the existence of a solution to a coupled differential-algebraic Riccati equation with certain stability properties - this is the main difficulty of the paper.

Semilinear Kolmogorov equations on the space of continuous functions via BSDEs

We deal with a class of semilinear parabolic PDEs on the space of continuous functions that arise, for example, as Kolmogorov equations associated to the infinite-dimensional lifting of path-dependent SDEs. We investigate existence of smooth solutions through their representation via forward-backward stochastic systems, for which we provide the necessary regularity theory. Because of the lack of smoothing properties of the parabolic operators at hand, solutions in general will only share the same regularity as the coefficients of the equation. To conclude we exhibit an application to Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman equations associated to suitable optimal control problems.

Singular Limit of BSDEs and Optimal Control of two Scale Stochastic Systems in Infinite Dimensional Spaces

In this paper we study, by probabilistic techniques, the convergence of the value function for a two-scale, infinite-dimensional, stochastic controlled system as the ratio between the two evolution speeds diverges. The value function is represented as the solution of a backward stochastic differential equation (BSDE) that it is shown to converge towards a reduced BSDE. The noise is assumed to be additive both in the slow and the fast equations for the state. Some non degeneracy condition on the slow equation are required. The limit BSDE involves the solution of an ergodic BSDE and is itself interpreted as the value function of an auxiliary stochastic control problem on a reduced state space.

Singular limit of BSDEs and Optimal control of two scale stochastic systems in infinite dimensional spaces

In this paper we study by probabilistic techniques the convergence of the value function for a two-scale, infinite-dimensional, stochastic controlled system as the ratio between the two evolution speeds diverges. The value function is represented as the solution of a \textit{backward stochastic differential equation} (BSDE) that it is shown to converge towards a \textit{reduced} BSDE. The noise is assumed to be additive both in the slow and the fast equations for the state. Some non degeneracy condition on the slow equation is required. The limit BSDE involves the solution of an \textit{ergodic} BSDE and is itself interpreted as the value function of an auxiliary stochastic control problem on a reduced state space.

Ergodic Control of Infinite Dimensional SDEs with Degenerate Noise

The present paper is devoted to the study of the asymptotic behavior of the value functions of both finite and infinite horizon stochastic control problems and to the investigation of their relation with suitable stochastic ergodic control problems. Our methodology is based only on probabilistic techniques, as for instance the so-called randomization of the control method, thus avoiding completely analytical tools from the theory of viscosity solutions. We are then able to treat with the case where the state process takes values in a general (possibly infinite dimensional) real separable Hilbert space and the diffusion coefficient is allowed to be degenerate.

Stochastic Maximum Principle for Optimal Control ofPartial Differential Equations Driven by White Noise

We prove a stochastic maximum principle ofPontryagin's type for the optimal control of a stochastic partial differential equationdriven by white noise in the case when the set of control actions is convex. Particular attention is paid to well-posedness of the adjoint backward stochastic differential equation and the regularity properties of its solution with values in infinite-dimensional spaces.

Ergodic maximum principle for stochastic systems

We present a version of the stochastic maximum principle (SMP) for ergodic control problems. In particular we give necessary (and sufficient) conditions for optimality for controlled dissipative systems in finite dimensions. The strategy we employ is mainly built on duality techniques. We are able to construct a dual process for all positive times via the analysis of a suitable class of perturbed linearized forward equations. We show that such a process is the unique bounded solution to a Backward SDE on infinite horizon from which we can write a version of the SMP.

Linear-quadratic optimal control under non-Markovian switching

We study a finite-dimensional continuous-time optimal control problem on finite horizon for a controlled diffusion driven by Brownian motion, in the linear-quadratic case. We admit stochastic coefficients, possibly depending on an underlying independent marked point process, so that our model is general enough to include controlled switching systems where the switching mechanism is not required to be Markovian. The problem is solved by means of a Riccati equation, which a backward stochastic differential equation driven by the Bronwian motion and by the random measure associated to the marked point process.
