The Self-Accelerating Universe with Vectors in Massive Gravity

We explore the possibility of realising self-accelerated expansion of the Universe taking into account the vector components of a massive graviton. The effective action in the decoupling limit contains an infinite number of terms, once the vector degrees of freedom are included. These can be re-summed in physically interesting situations, which result in non-polynomial couplings between the scalar and vector modes. We show there are self-accelerating background solutions for this effective action, with the possibility of having a non-trivial profile for the vector fields. We then study fluctuations around these solutions and show that there is always a ghost, if a background vector field is present. When the background vector field is switched off, the ghost can be avoided, at the price of entering into a strong coupling regime, in which the vector fluctuations have vanishing kinetic terms. Finally we show that the inclusion of a bare cosmological constant does not change the previous conclusions and it does not lead to a ghost mode in the absence of a background vector field.

Analytic solutions in non-linear massive gravity

We study spherically symmetric solutions in a covariant massive gravity model, which is a candidate for a ghost-free non-linear completion of the Fierz-Pauli theory. There is a branch of solutions that exhibits the Vainshtein mechanism, recovering General Relativity below a Vainshtein radius given by $(r_g m^2)^{1/3}$, where $m$ is the graviton mass and $r_g$ is the Schwarzschild radius of a matter source. Another branch of exact solutions exists, corresponding to Schwarzschild-de Sitter spacetimes where the curvature scale of de Sitter space is proportional to the mass squared of the graviton.

Inflationary Correlation Functions without Infrared Divergences

Inflationary correlation functions are potentially affected by infrared divergences. For example, the two-point correlator of curvature perturbation at momentum k receives corrections ~ln(kL), where L is the size of the region in which the measurement is performed. We define infrared-safe correlation functions which have no sensitivity to the size L of the box used for the observation. The conventional correlators with their familiar log-enhanced corrections (both from scalar and tensor long-wavelength modes) are easily recovered from our IR-safe correlation functions. Among other examples, we illustrate this by calculating the corrections to the non-Gaussianity parameter f_NL coming from long-wavelength tensor modes. In our approach, the IR corrections automatically emerge in a resummed, all-orders form. For the scalar corrections, the resulting all-orders expression can be evaluated explicitly.

Lifshitz solutions in supergravity and string theory

We derive Lifshitz configurations in string theory for general dynamical exponents z \geq 1. We begin by obtaining simple Li x Omega solutions to supergravities in diverse dimensions, with Omega a compact constant curvature manifold. Then we uplift the solutions to ten dimensions, providing configurations that correspond to warped compactifications in Type II string theory.

Towards multi-field D-brane inflation in a warped throat

We study the inflationary dynamics in a model of slow-roll inflation in warped throat. Inflation is realized by the motion of a D-brane along the radial direction of the throat, and at later stages instabilities develop in the angular directions. We closely investigate both the single field potential relevant for the slow-roll phase, and the full multi-field one including the angular modes which becomes important at later stages. We study the main features of the instability process, discussing its possible consequences and identifying the vacua towards which the angular modes are driven.

Scale-dependent non-Gaussianity probes inflationary physics

We calculate the scale dependence of the bispectrum and trispectrum in (quasi) local models of non-Gaussian primordial density perturbations, and characterize this scale dependence in terms of new observable parameters. They can help to discriminate between models of inflation, since they are sensitive to properties of the inflationary physics that are not probed by the standard observables. We find consistency relations between these parameters in certain classes of models. We apply our results to a scenario of modulated reheating, showing that the scale dependence of non-Gaussianity can be significant. We also discuss the scale dependence of the bispectrum and trispectrum, in cases where one varies the shape as well as the overall scale of the figure under consideration. We conclude providing a formulation of the curvature perturbation in real space, which generalises the standard local form by dropping the assumption that f_NL and g_NL are constants.

Inflationary Infrared Divergences: Geometry of the Reheating Surface vs. delta N Formalism

We describe a simple way of incorporating fluctuations of the Hubble scale during the horizon exit of scalar perturbations into the delta N formalism. The dominant effect comes from the dependence of the Hubble scale on low-frequency modes of the inflaton. This modifies the coefficient of the log-enhanced term appearing in the curvature spectrum at second order in field fluctuations. With this modification, the relevant coefficient turns out to be proportional to the second derivative of the tree-level spectrum with respect to the inflaton phi at horizon exit. A logarithm with precisely the same coefficient appears in a calculation of the log-enhancement of the curvature spectrum based purely on the geometry of the reheating surface. We take this agreement as strong support for the proposed implementation of the delta N formalism. Moreover, our analysis makes it apparent that the log-enhancement of the inflationary power-spectrum is indeed physical if this quantity is defined using a global coordinate system on the reheating surface (or any other post-inflationary surface of constant energy density). However, it can be avoided by defining the spectrum using invariant distances on this surface.

Scale dependence of local f_NL

We consider possible scale-dependence of the non-linearity parameter f_NL in local and quasi-local models of non-Gaussian primordial density perturbations. In the simplest model where the primordial perturbations are a quadratic local function of a single Gaussian field then f_NL is scale-independent by construction. However scale-dependence can arise due to either a local function of more than one Gaussian field, or due to non-linear evolution of modes after horizon-exit during inflation. We show that the scale dependence of f_NL is typically first order in slow-roll. For some models this may be observable with experiments such as Planck provided that f_NL is close to the current observational bounds.

Nonlinear perturbations of cosmological scalar fields with non-standard kinetic terms

We adopt a covariant formalism to derive exact evolution equations for nonlinear perturbations, in a universe dominated by two scalar fields. These scalar fields are characterized by non-canonical kinetic terms and an arbitrary field space metric, a situation typically encountered in inflationary models inspired by string theory. We decompose the nonlinear scalar perturbations into adiabatic and entropy modes, generalizing the definition adopted in the linear theory, and we derive the corresponding exact evolution equations. We also obtain a nonlinear generalization of the curvature perturbation on uniform density hypersurfaces, showing that on large scales it is sourced only by the nonlinear version of the entropy perturbation. We then expand these equations to second order in the perturbations, using a coordinate based formalism. Our results are relatively compact and elegant and enable one to identify the new effects coming from the non-canonical structure of the scalar fields Lagrangian. We also explain how to analyze, in our formalism, the interesting scenario of multifield Dirac-Born-Infeld inflation.

Induced gravity on intersecting brane-worlds Part I: Maximally symmetric solutions

We explore models of intersecting brane-worlds with induced gravity terms on codimension one branes and on their intersection. Maximally symmetric solutions for the branes and the intersection are found. We find new self-accelerating solutions. In a 6d spacetime, the solutions realize the see-saw modification of gravity where the UV scale of the modification to 4d gravity is determined by 6d Planck scale given by $M_6 \sim 10^{-3}$eV and the IR scale of the modification is determined by $M_6^2/M_4 \sim H_0 \sim 10^{-42}$ GeV where $H_0$ is present-day Hubble scale. We find that it is increasingly difficult to construct phenomenologically viable models in higher-dimensional spacetime due to the necessity to have the lower value for the fundamental Planck scale to realize the late time acceleration. It is found that the system also admits self-tuning solutions where the tension at the intersection does not change the geometry of the intersection. The induced gravity terms can avoid the necessity to compactify the extra dimensions. Finally, we discuss the possibility to have ordinary matter at the intersection, without introducing any regularisation, using the induced gravity terms.

Induced gravity on intersecting brane-worlds Part II: Cosmology

We explore cosmology of intersecting braneworlds with induced gravity on the branes. We find the cosmological equations that control the evolution of a moving codimension one brane and a codimension two brane that sits at the intersection. We study the Friedmann equation at the intersection, finding new contributions from the six dimensional bulk. These higher dimensional contributions allow us to find new examples of self-accelerating configurations for the codimension two brane at the intersection and we discuss their features.

WEAKLY-coupled IIA Flux Compactifications

We study compactifications of type IIA string theory on Calabi-Yau manifolds that are mirror to a subset of the type IIB LARGE-volume models. A combination of flux, alpha' corrections and non-perturbative effects stabilises the moduli in a non-supersymmetric AdS vacuum. This vacuum has the feature that the (ten-dimensional) string coupling is exponentially small which can naturally lead to a TeV supersymmetry breaking scale with an intermediate string scale. The AdS vacuum can be uplifted to a dS one through the introduction of D6 branes, and complex-structure modular inflation can be realised.

Spinflation

We study the cosmological implications of including angular motion in the DBI brane inflation scenario. The non-canonical kinetic terms of the Dirac-Born-Infeld action give an interesting alternative to slow roll inflation, and cycling branes can drive periods of accelerated expansion in the Universe. We present explicit numerical solutions demonstrating brane inflation in the Klebanov-Strassler throat. We find that demanding sufficient inflation takes place in the throat is in conflict with keeping the brane's total energy low enough so that local gravitational backreaction on the Calabi-Yau manifold can be safely ignored. We deduce that spinflation (brane inflation with angular momentum) can ease this tension by providing extra e-foldings at the start of inflation. Cosmological expansion rapidly damps the angular momentum causing an exit to a more conventional brane inflation scenario. Finally, we set up a general framework for cosmological perturbation theory in this scenario, where we have multi-field non-standard kinetic term inflation.

Cycling in the Throat

We analyse the dynamics of a probe D3-(anti-)brane propagating in a warped string compactification, making use of the Dirac-Born-Infeld action approximation. We also examine the time dependent expansion of such moving branes from the ``mirage cosmology'' perspective, where cosmology is induced by the brane motion in the background spacetime. A range of physically interesting backgrounds are considered: AdS5, Klebanov-Tseytlin and Klebanov-Strassler. Our focus is on exploring what new phenomenology is obtained from giving the brane angular momentum in the extra dimensions. We find that in general, angular momentum creates a centrifugal barrier, causing bouncing cosmologies. More unexpected, and more interesting, is the existence of bound orbits, corresponding to cyclic universes.

Towards Minkowski Vacua in Type II String Compactifications

We study the vacuum structure of compactifications of type II string theories on orientifolds with SU(3)xSU(3) structure. We argue that generalised geometry enables us to treat these non-geometric compactifications using a supergravity analysis in a way very similar to geometric compactifications. We find supersymmetric Minkowski vacua with all the moduli stabilised at weak string coupling and all the tadpole conditions satisfied. Generically the value of the moduli fields in the vacuum is parametrically controlled and can be taken to arbitrarily large values.

Standard 4d gravity on a brane in six dimensional flux compactifications

We consider a six dimensional space-time, in which two of the dimensions are compactified by a flux. Matter can be localized on a codimension one brane coupled to the bulk gauge field and wrapped around an axis of symmetry of the internal space. By studying the linear perturbations around this background, we show that the gravitational interaction between sources on the brane is described by Einstein 4d gravity at large distances. Our model provides a consistent setup for the study of gravity in the rugby (or football) compactification, without having to deal with the complications of a delta-like, codimension two brane. To our knowledge, this is the first complete study of gravity in a realistic brane model with two extra dimensions, in which the mechanism of stabilization of the extra space is consistently taken into account.

Cosmology of intersecting brane world models in Gauss-Bonnet gravity

We study the cosmological properties of a codimension two brane world that sits at the intersection between two four branes, in the framework of six dimensional Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity. Due to contributions of the Gauss-Bonnet terms, the junction conditions require the presence of localized energy density on the codimension two defect. The induced metric on this surface assumes a FRW form, with a scale factor associated to the position of the brane in the background; we can embed on the codimension two defect the preferred form of energy density. We present the cosmological evolution equations for the three brane, showing that, for the case of pure AdS$_6$ backgrounds, they acquire the same form of the ones for the Randall-Sundrum II model. When the background is different from pure AdS$_6$, the cosmological behavior is potentially modified in respect to the typical one of codimension one brane worlds. We discuss, in a particular model embedded in an AdS$_6$ black hole, the conditions one should satisfy in order to obtain standard cosmology at late epochs.

Universal Singlets, Supergravity and Inflation

In supersymmetric theories, the occurrence of universal singlets is a delicate issue, because they usually induce tadpoles that destabilize the hierarchy. We study the effects of these tadpoles in supersymmetric hybrid inflation models. The resulting scenario is generically modified, but it is still possible to achieve inflation in a natural way. It is argued that singlets, despite the problems associated with their presence, can lead to interesting cosmological consequences.
