Homogenization of some viscous Hamilton--Jacobi equations using variational arguments on probability spaces

This work studies the asymptotic behavior of a class of viscous Hamilton--Jacobi equations with oscillatory periodic potentials, already studied by other authors in the PDE framework, and described in terms of an effective Hamiltonian. A novel variational approach is introduced, based on the classical stochastic control representation involving a Brownian motion, which allows the problem to be reformulated in terms of functionals defined on probability spaces. The core result is the identification of a homogenized Lagrangian obtained via a $Γ$-convergence procedure adapted to random processes, where filtrations and Brownian motions are treated as variables. The effective Hamiltonian is then recovered as the Legendre transform of this homogenized Lagrangian. The analysis provides both lower and upper bounds by means of blow-up arguments and the construction of stochastic correctors, yielding a complete characterization of the homogenized limit. This approach allows for a stability result with respect to the addition of some localized defects embedded in the periodic background.

$Γ$-convergence and stochastic homogenization for functionals in the $\mathcal{A}$-free setting

We obtain a compactness result for $Γ$-convergence of integral functionals defined on $\mathcal{A}$-free vector fields. This is used to study homogenization problems for these functionals without periodicity assumptions. More precisely, we prove that the homogenized integrand can be obtained by taking limits of minimum values of suitable minimization problems on large cubes, when the side length of these cubes tends to $+\infty$, assuming that these limit values do not depend on the center of the cube. Under the usual stochastic periodicity assumptions, this result is then used to solve the stochastic homogenization problem by means of the subadditive ergodic theorem.

$Γ$-convergence and homogenisation for free discontinuity functionals with linear growth in the space of functions with bounded deformation

We study the $Γ$-convergence of sequences of free discontinuity functionals with linear growth defined in the space ${\rm BD}$ of functions with bounded deformation. We prove a compactness result with respect to $Γ$-convergence and outline the main properties of the $Γ$-limits, which lead to an integral representation result. The corresponding integrands are obtained by taking limits of suitable minimisation problems on small cubes. These results are then used to study the deterministic and stochastic homogenisation problem for a large class of free discontinuity functionals defined in ${\rm BD}$.

A matrix-valued measure associated to the derivatives of a function of generalised bounded deformation

We associate to every function $u\in GBD(Ω)$ a measure $μ_u$ with values in the space of symmetric matrices, which generalises the distributional symmetric gradient $Eu$ defined for functions of bounded deformation. We show that this measure $μ_u$ admits a decomposition as the sum of three mutually singular matrix-valued measures $μ^a_u$, $μ^c_u$, and $μ^j_u$, the absolutely continuous part, the Cantor part, and the jump part, as in the case of $BD(Ω)$ functions. We then characterise the space $GSBD(Ω)$, originally defined only by slicing, as the space of functions $u\in GBD(Ω)$ such that $μ^c_u=0$.

Motion of Islands of Elastic Thin Films in the Dewetting Regime

This paper addresses a two-dimensional sharp interface variational model for solid-state dewetting of thin films with surface energies, introduced by Wang, Jiang, Bao, and Srolovitz in \cite{jiang2016solid}. Using the $H^{-1}$-gradient flow structure of the evolution law, short-time existence for a surface diffusion evolution equation with curvature regularization is established in the context of epitaxially strained two-dimensional films. The main novelty, as compared to the study of the wetting regime, is the presence of moving contact lines.

A variational approach to the stability in the homogenization of some Hamilton-Jacobi equations

We investigate the stability with respect to homogenization of classes of integrals arising in the control-theoretic interpretation of some Hamilton-Jacobi equations. The prototypical case is the homogenization of energies with a Lagrangian consisting of the sum of a kinetic term and a highly oscillatory potential $V =V_{\rm per}+ W$, where $V_{\rm per}$ is periodic and $W$ is a nonnegative perturbation thereof. We assume that $W$ has zero average in tubular domains oriented along a dense set of directions. Stability then holds true; that is, the resulting homogenized functional is identical to that for $W= 0$. We consider various extensions of this case. As a consequence of our results, we obtain stability for the homogenization of some steady-state and time-dependent, first-order Hamilton-Jacobi equations with convex Hamiltonians and perturbed periodic potentials. Finally, we show with an example that, for negative $W$, stability may not hold. Our study revisits and, depending on the different assumptions, complements results obtained by P.-L. Lions and collaborators using PDE techniques.

A closure theorem for $Γ$-convergence and H-convergence with applications to non-periodic homogenization

In this work we examine the stability of some classes of integrals, and in particular with respect to homogenization. The prototypical case is the homogenization of quadratic energies with periodic coefficients perturbed by a term vanishing at infinity, which has been recently examined in the framework of elliptic PDE. We use localization techniques and higher-integrability Meyers-type results to provide a closure theorem by $Γ$-convergence within a large class of integral functionals. From such result we derive stability theorems in homogenization which comprise the case of perturbations with zero average on the whole space. The results are also extended to the stochastic case, and specialized to the $G$-convergence of operators corresponding to quadratic forms. A corresponding analysis is also carried on for non-symmetric operators using the localization properties of $H$-convergence. Finally, we treat the case of perforated domains with Neumann boundary condition, and their stability.

Gamma-convergence of quadratic functionals perturbed by bounded linear functionals

Given a bounded open set $Ω\subset \mathbb{R}^n$, we study sequences of quadratic functionals on the Sobolev space $H^1_0(Ω)$, perturbed by sequences of bounded linear functionals. We prove that their $Γ$-limits, in the weak topology of $H^1_0(Ω)$, can always be written as the sum of a quadratic functional, a linear functional, and a non-positive constant. The classical theory of $G$- and $H$-convergence completely characterises the quadratic and linear parts of the $Γ$-limit and shows that their coefficients do not depend on $Ω$. The constant, which instead depends on $Ω$ and will be denoted by $-ν(Ω)$, plays an important role in the study of the limit behaviour of the energies of the solutions. The main result of this paper is that, passing to a subsequence, we can prove that $ν$ coincides with a non-negative Radon measure on a sufficiently large collection of bounded open sets $Ω$. Moreover, we exhibit an example that shows that the previous result cannot be obtained for every bounded open set. The specific form of this example shows that the compactness theorem for the localisation method in $Γ$-convergence cannot be easily improved.

Validity and failure of the integral representation of Γ-limits of convex non-local functionals

We prove an integral-representation result for limits of non-local quadratic forms on $H^1_0(Ω)$, with $Ω$ a bounded open subset of $\mathbb R^d$, extending the representation on $C^\infty_c(Ω)$ given by the Beurling-Deny formula in the theory of Dirichlet forms. We give a counterexample showing that a corresponding representation may not hold if we consider analogous functionals in $W^{1,p}_0(Ω)$, with $p\neq 2$ and $1<p\le d$.

Compactness for a class of integral functionals with interacting local and non-local terms

We prove a compactness result with respect to $Γ$-convergence for a class of integral functionals which are expressed as a sum of a local and a non-local term. The main feature is that, under our hypotheses, the local part of the $Γ$-limit depends on the interaction between the local and non-local terms of the converging subsequence. The result is applied to concentration and homogenization problems.

Visco-energetic solutions for a model of crack growth in brittle materials

Visco-energetic solutions have been recently advanced as a new solution concept for rate-independent systems, alternative to energetic solutions/quasistatic evolutions and balanced viscosity solutions. In the spirit of this novel concept, we revisit the analysis of the variational model proposed by Francfort and Marigo for the quasi-static crack growth in brittle materials, in the case of antiplane shear. In this context, visco-energetic solutions can be constructed by perturbing the time incremental scheme for quasistatic evolutions by means of a viscous correction inspired by the term introduced by Almgren, Taylor, and Wang in the study of mean curvature flows. With our main result we prove the existence of a visco-energetic solution with a given initial crack. We also show that, if the cracks have a finite number of tips evolving smoothly on a given time interval, visco-energetic solutions comply with Griffith's criterion.

Quasistatic limit of a dynamic viscoelastic model with memory

We study the behaviour of the solutions to a dynamic evolution problem for a viscoelastic model with long memory, when the rate of change of the data tends to zero. We prove that a suitably rescaled version of the solutions converges to the solution of the corresponding stationary problem.

A global method for deterministic and stochastic homogenisation in $BV$

In this paper we study the deterministic and stochastic homogenisation of free-discontinuity functionals under \emph{linear} growth and coercivity conditions. The main novelty of our deterministic result is that we work under very general assumptions on the integrands which, in particular, are not required to be periodic in the space variable. Combining this result with the pointwise Subadditive Ergodic Theorem by Akcoglu and Krengel, we prove a stochastic homogenisation result, in the case of stationary random integrands. In particular, we characterise the limit integrands in terms of asymptotic cell formulas, as in the classical case of periodic homogenisation.

A numerical study of the jerky crack growth in elastoplastic materials with localized plasticity

We present a numerical implementation of a model of quasi-static crack growth in linearly elastic-perfectly plastic materials. We assume that the displacement is antiplane, and that the cracks and the plastic slips are localized on a prescribed path. We provide numerical evidence of the fact that the crack growth is intermittent, with jump characteristics that depend on the material properties.

$Γ$-Convergence of Free-discontinuity Problems

We study the $Γ$-convergence of sequences of free-discontinuity functionals depending on vector-valued functions $u$ which can be discontinuous across hypersurfaces whose shape and location are not known a priori. The main novelty of our result is that we work under very general assumptions on the integrands which, in particular, are not required to be periodic in the space variable. Further, we consider the case of surface integrands which are not bounded from below by the amplitude of the jump of $u$. We obtain three main results: compactness with respect to $Γ$-convergence, representation of the $Γ$-limit in an integral form and identification of its integrands, and homogenisation formulas without periodicity assumptions. In particular, the classical case of periodic homogenisation follows as a by-product of our analysis. Moreover, our result covers also the case of stochastic homogenisation, as we will show in a forthcoming paper.
