Excited-State Effects in Nucleon Sigma Terms from a Variational Analysis

We investigate excited-state effects in nucleon sigma-terms in lattice QCD using twisted-mass clover-improved fermion ensembles. We study correlation functions with nucleon and multihadron nucleon-$σ$-meson interpolating operators. The analysis is performed using three gauge ensembles, including one ensemble simulated with two degenerate light, a strange, and a charm quark with quark masses tuned to approximately their physical value. We solve the generalized eigenvalue problem that arises from the matrix of correlators and show that the three-point function for the light sigma-term obtained using the optimal linear combination of interpolating operators has substantially reduced time dependence without loss of statistical precision. We apply Laplace filtering and investigate residual excited-state contributions in the extraction of $σ_{πN}$. Using the same optimal linear combination of correlators as for $σ_{πN}$ for the strange sigma-term we also observe suppressed excited state contributions over an extended range of source--sink time separations. For the charm sigma-term, we observe negligible time dependence within the large statistical uncertainties, and these improvements show no significant effect.

Spin and momentum fraction carried by partons in the nucleon

We determine the momentum fraction and angular momentum carried by quarks and gluons in the proton in lattice QCD. We use four ensembles simulated with up, down, strange and charm quarks with their masses tuned to their physical values. These ensembles have similar physical volume and different lattice spacings allowing us to take the continuum limit directly at the physical pion mass point. We extract the quark and gluon momentum fractions and total angular momentum in the continuum limit as well as the intrinsic quark spin and orbital angular momentum contributions to the proton spin. We find the total momentum fraction $\langle x_N \rangle= 0.995(60)(29)$ and the total spin $J_N = 0.507(43)(65)$, showing that both the momentum and spin sum rules are satisfied. We compare our results to those extracted from phenomenological analyses.

Nucleon unpolarized second Mellin moments using lattice QCD ensembles with physical quark masses and in the continuum limit

We compute the matrix elements of the energy-momentum tensor of the nucleon using four ensembles of twisted mass clover-improved fermions with the up, down, strange and charm quark masses tuned to approximately their physical values. The four ensembles have similar physical volume and lattice spacings $a=0.080$~fm, $0.068$~fm, $0.057$~fm, and $0.049$ fm, allowing us to take the continuum limit directly at the physical pion mass point. We compute both connected and disconnected quark contributions as well as gluon contributions. All renormalization functions, including the mixing of the quark singlet with the gluon, are determined non-perturbatively. We extract the gravitational form factors in the continuum limit at $Q^2=0$ and evaluate the contribution of quarks and gluons to the momentum and angular momentum of the proton. Using the values of the intrinsic quark spin computed using the same gauge ensembles we also determine the orbital angular momentum for each quark flavor.

Proton and neutron electromagnetic form factors from lattice QCD in the continuum limit

We compute the electromagnetic form factors of the proton and neutron using lattice QCD. We employ $N_\mathrm{f}$=2+1+1 twisted mass clover-improved fermions with quark masses tuned to their physical values. Three ensembles with lattice spacings of $a$=0.080 fm, 0.068 fm, and 0.057 fm, and approximately the same physical volume allow us to obtain the continuum limit directly at the physical pion mass. For each ensemble, we use several values of the sink-source time separation, ranging from 0.5 fm to 1.5 fm, to allow for a thorough analysis of excited state effects via multi-state fits. The disconnected contributions are also analyzed using high statistics combined with techniques to mitigate stochastic noise in the estimation of the fermion loop. These techniques include low-mode deflation, dilution in the color and spin components, and hierarchical probing. We study the momentum transfer dependence of the form factors using the $z$-expansion and dipole Ansätze, thereby enabling the extraction of the electric and magnetic radii and the magnetic moments, as well as the Zemach and Friar radii in the continuum limit. Results for the proton and neutron electric and magnetic mean square radii are $\sqrt{\langle r_E^2\rangle^p} = 0.860(38)(23)$ fm, $\langle r_E^2\rangle^n = -0.147(48)$ fm$^2$, $\sqrt{\langle r_M^2\rangle^p} = 0.870(53)(15)$ fm and $\sqrt{\langle r_M^2\rangle^n} = 0.913(67)(19)$ fm, and for the proton and neutron magnetic moments $μ^p=2.849(92)(52)$ and $μ^n=-1.819(76)(29)$, respectively. In all cases, the first error is statistical and the second systematic, where the latter includes an estimate of the error from the fits to the momentum dependence of the form factors and from the continuum extrapolation.

Diagonal Kenney-Laub Rational Approximation to the Overlap Operator using Wilson and Brillouin Kernel

We propose a formulation of the overlap Dirac operator in lattice QCD that employs diagonal Kenney-Laub (KL) iterates to approximate the matrix sign function. KL iterates require no prior spectral information about the kernel operator and, when expressed via their partial fraction decomposition, offer a practical and efficient approximation scheme. We evaluate this approach in a proof-of-concept implementation using quenched lattices at $β=6.2$ and two Dirac operator discretizations as a kernel, namely the Wilson and the Brillouin operators. By examining the approximate overlap operator's violation of the Ginsparg-Wilson relation and the critical bare quark mass for increasing approximation order, we find that KL iterates deliver enhanced chiral symmetry preservation and computational efficiency compared to the Chebyshev polynomial approach.

Nucleon strange electromagnetic form factors using $N_f=2+1+1$ twisted-mass fermions at the physical point

We present the strange electromagnetic form factors of the nucleon using lattice QCD with $N_f=2+1+1$ twisted mass clover-improved fermions and quark masses tuned to their physical values. Using four ensembles with lattice spacings of $a=0.080$ fm, $0.068$ fm, $0.057$ fm and $0.049$ fm, and similar physical volume, we obtain the continuum limit directly at the physical pion mass. The disconnected strange contributions are computed using high statistics two-point functions combined with stochastic noise mitigation techniques, such as spin-color dilution and hierarchical probing in the estimation of the quark loop. From the momentum dependence of the form factors, we provide the strange electric and magnetic radii, as well as the strange magnetic moment in the continuum limit.

Nucleon strange electromagnetic form factors from $N_f=2+1+1$ lattice QCD

We present the nucleon strange electromagnetic form factors using four lattice QCD ensembles with $N_f=2+1+1$ twisted mass clover-improved fermions and quark masses tuned to approximately their physical values. The four ensembles have similar physical volume and lattice spacings of $a=0.080$ fm, $0.068$ fm, $0.057$ fm and $0.049$ fm allowing us to take the continuum limit directly at the physical pion mass point. We compute nucleon three-point correlation functions with high statistics, where the disconnected fermion loops are evaluated stochastically with spin-color dilution and hierarchical probing. We find non-zero values for both electric and magnetic form factors. We extract the strange electric and magnetic radii, as well as the strange magnetic moment in the continuum limit by studying the momentum dependence of the form factors. We also compute the charm electromagnetic form factors within the same setup, which we find to be consistent with zero within the statistical precision of our data.

Strangeness of nucleons from $N_f=2+1+1$ lattice QCD

We present the strange electromagnetic form factors of the nucleon using lattice QCD simulations with degenerate light, a strange, and a charm quark in the sea with masses tuned to their physical values. For the first time, the strange electromagnetic form factors are computed at the continuum limit using only ensembles simulated with physical quark masses, eliminating the need for chiral extrapolations and their associated systematic uncertainty. We obtain the momentum transfer dependence of the form factors using the $z$-expansion and provide the strange electric and magnetic radii, as well as the strange magnetic moment. When combining our statistical errors and systematic uncertainties stemming from the momentum transfer dependence fit, our errors are an order of magnitude smaller than those associated with experimental determinations of the strange electromagnetic form factor.

Diagonal Kenney-Laub Rational Approximation to the Overlap Dirac Operator

We propose a practical formulation of the overlap Dirac operator in lattice QCD that employs the diagonal Kenney-Laub rational iterates - expressed via their partial fraction decomposition - to approximate the matrix sign function. We investigate this approximation using the Brillouin operator as kernel, in addition to the standard Wilson Dirac operator. Numerical results show improved chiral symmetry preservation and computational efficiency compared to the Chebyshev polynomial approach.

Isovector axial and pseudoscalar form factors from twisted mass lattice QCD at the physical point

We present the isovector axial, induced pseudoscalar, and pseudoscalar form factors of the nucleon using three twisted-mass fermion ensembles with degenerate up- and down-, strange-, and charm-quarks with masses tuned to their physical values (physical point). The three ensembles have lattice spacing $a$=0.08, 0.068, and 0.057 fm and approximately equal physical volume allowing for the continuum limit to be taken at the physical point. Excited-state contributions to the matrix elements are evaluated using several sink-source separations from 0.5 fm to 1.5 fm and multistate fits. We check the partially conserved axial-vector current (PCAC) hypothesis and the pion pole dominance (PPD) and show that in the continuum limit both relations are satisfied. We provide results at the continuum limit for the isovector nucleon axial charge, axial radius, pion-nucleon coupling constant, and for the induced pseudoscalar form factor at the muon capture point.

Nucleon axial, tensor, and scalar charges and $σ$-terms in lattice QCD

We determine the nucleon axial, scalar and tensor charges at the continuum limit by analyzing three $N_f=2+1+1$ twisted mass fermion ensembles with all quark masses tuned to approximately their physical values. We include all contributions from valence and sea quarks. We use the Akaike Information Criterion to evaluate systematic errors due to excited states and the continuum extrapolation. For the nucleon isovector axial charge we find $g_A^{u-d}=1.250(24)$, in agreement with the experimental value. We compute the axial, tensor and scalar charges for each quark flavor. The axial charge provides crucial information on the intrinsic spin carried by quark in the nucleon and the the latter two provide input for experimental searches of physics beyond the standard model. Moreover, we extract the nucleon $σ$-terms and find $σ_{πN}=41.9(8.1)$ MeV, for the strange $σ_{s}=30(17)$ MeV and for the charm $σ_{c}=82(29)$ MeV. We also present preliminary results on the isovector quantities using a fourth ensemble at smaller lattice spacing.

Investigation of $πN$ contributions to nucleon matrix elements

We investigate an improved method to extract nucleon matrix elements from lattice 3-point functions using a generalized eigenvalue problem (GEVP) with nucleon and pion-nucleon interpolating fields. Our method avoids the computation of the costly three-point functions that have pion-nucleon interpolators at both source and sink. We demonstrate that excited state contamination from $Nπ$ is minimized in nucleon matrix elements of the scalar, vector, pseudoscalar, axial, and tensor currents and discuss our results based on a physical-point ensemble with a pion mass value of 131 MeV. We find that the GEVP is most significant for the isovector pseudoscalar and axial currents.

Investigation of pion-nucleon contributions to nucleon matrix elements

We investigate contributions of excited states to nucleon matrix elements computed in lattice QCD by employing, in addition to the standard nucleon interpolating operator, pion-nucleon ($π$-$N$) operators. We solve a generalized eigenvalue problem (GEVP) to obtain an optimal interpolating operator that minimizes overlap with the $π$-$N$ states. We derive a variant of the standard application of the GEVP method, which allows for constructing 3-point correlation functions using the optimized interpolating operator without requiring the computationally demanding combination that includes $π$-$N$ operators in both sink and source. We extract nucleon matrix elements using two twisted mass fermion ensembles, one ensemble generated using pion mass of 346 MeV and one ensemble tuned to reproduce the physical value of the pion mass. Especially, we determine the isoscalar and isovector scalar, pseudoscalar, vector, axial, and tensor matrix elements. We include results obtained using a range of kinematic setups, including momentum in the sink. Our results using this variational approach are compared with previous results obtained using the same ensembles and multi-state fits without GEVP improvement. We find that for the physical mass point ensemble, the improvement, in terms of suppression of excited states using this method, is most significant for the case of the matrix elements of the isovector axial and pseudoscalar currents.

Elastic Nucleon-Pion scattering amplitudes in the $Δ$ channel at physical pion mass from Lattice QCD

We present an investigation of pion-nucleon elastic scattering in the $I\,(J^P) = \frac{3}{2}\,(\frac{3}{2}^+)$ channel using lattice QCD with degenerate up and down, strange and charm quarks with masses tuned to their physical values. We use an ensemble of twisted mass fermions with box size $L = 5.1\,\mathrm{fm}$ and lattice spacing $a = 0.08\,\mathrm{fm}$ and we consider the $πN$ system in rest and moving frames up to total momentum $\vec{P}^2 = 3\,(2π/L)^2$ = 0.17 GeV$^2$. We take into account the finite volume symmetries and $S$- and $P$-wave mixing, and use the Lüscher formalism to simultaneously constrain the $J = 1/2,\,\ell = 0$ and $J = 3/2,\,\ell = 1$ scattering amplitudes. We estimate the $Δ$ resonance pole in the $P$-wave channel as well as the $S$-wave isospin-3/2 scattering length.

Nucleon axial and pseudoscalar form factors using twisted-mass fermion ensembles at the physical point

We compute the nucleon axial and pseudoscalar form factors using three $N_f=$2+1+1 twisted mass fermion ensembles with all quark masses tuned to approximately their physical values. The values of the lattice spacings of these three physical point ensembles are 0.080 fm, 0.068 fm, and 0.057 fm, and spatial sizes 5.1 fm, 5.44 fm, and 5.47 fm, respectively, yielding $m_πL$>3.6. Convergence to the ground state matrix elements is assessed using multi-state fits. We study the momentum dependence of the three form factors and check the partially conserved axial-vector current (PCAC) hypothesis and the pion pole dominance (PPD). We show that in the continuum limit, the PCAC and PPD relations are satisfied. We also show that the Goldberger-Treimann relation is approximately fulfilled and determine the Goldberger-Treiman discrepancy. We find for the nucleon axial charge $g_A$=1.245(28)(14), for the axial radius $\langle r^2_A \rangle$=0.339(48)(06) fm$^2$, for the pion-nucleon coupling constant $g_{πNN} \equiv \lim_{Q^2 \rightarrow -m_π^2} G_{πNN}(Q^2)$=13.25(67)(69) and for $G_P(0.88m_μ^2)\equiv g_P^*$=8.99(39)(49).
