Cosmological bounds on dark matter-neutrino interactions

We investigate the cosmological effects of a neutrino interaction with cold dark matter. We postulate a neutrino that interacts with a ``neutrino interacting dark matter'' (NIDM) particle with an elastic-scattering cross section that either decreases with temperature as $T^2$ or remains constant with temperature. The neutrino--dark-matter interaction results in a neutrino--dark-matter fluid with pressure, and this pressure results in diffusion-damped oscillations in the matter power spectrum, analogous to the acoustic oscillations in the baryon-photon fluid. We discuss the bounds from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey on the NIDM opacity (ratio of cross section to NIDM-particle mass) and compare with the constraint from observation of neutrinos from supernova 1987A. If only a fraction of the dark matter interacts with neutrinos, then NIDM oscillations may affect current cosmological constraints from measurements of galaxy clustering. We discuss how detection of NIDM oscillations would suggest a particle-antiparticle asymmetry in the dark-matter sector.

Relic neutrino decoupling including flavour oscillations

In the early universe, neutrinos are slightly coupled when electron-positron pairs annihilate transferring their entropy to photons. This process originates non-thermal distortions on the neutrino spectra which depend on neutrino flavour, larger for nu_e than for nu_mu or nu_tau. We study the effect of three-neutrino flavour oscillations on the process of neutrino decoupling by solving the momentum-dependent kinetic equations for the neutrino spectra. We find that oscillations do not essentially modify the total change in the neutrino energy density, giving N_eff=3.046 in terms of the effective number of neutrinos, while the small effect over the production of primordial 4He is increased by O(20%), up to 2.1 x 10^{-4}. These results are stable within the presently favoured region of neutrino mixing parameters.

Extended quintessence with an exponential coupling

We study a class of extended quintessence cosmologies where the scalar field playing the role of the dark energy is exponentially coupled to the Ricci scalar. We find that the dynamics induced by the effective gravitational potential in the Klein-Gordon equation dominates the motion of the field in the early universe. The resulting "R-boost" trajectory is characterized by a kinetic dark energy density, given by [3\rhomnr0(1+z)]^2 [ 32 rhor0 omegaJBD0]^(-1), where omegaJBD0, rhor0 and rhomnr0 are calculated at present, and represent the Jordan Brans Dicke parameter, the density of relativistic matter and of those species which are non-relativistic at redshift z, respectively. We show that such a trajectory represents an attractor, equivalent to a tracking solution with equation of state w=-1/3, providing a large basin of attraction for the initial dark energy density regardless of the properties of the potential energy yielding acceleration today. We derive the up to date constraints from Big Bang Nucleosynthesis (BBN) on the present scenario, and we show that they are largely satisfied for interesting trajectories of the dark energy scalar field in the early universe. We compute the cosmological perturbation spectra in these cosmologies. For a fixed value of omegaJBD0, the projection and Integrated Sachs-Wolfe effects on the cosmic microwave background anisotropy are considerably larger in the exponential case with respect to a quadratic non-minimal coupling, reflecting the fact that the effective gravitational constant depends exponentially on the dynamics of the field.

Spacetime Noncommutativity and Antisymmetric Tensor Dynamics in the Early Universe

This paper investigates the possible cosmological implications of the presence of an antisymmetric tensor field related to a lack of commutatitivity of spacetime coordinates at the Planck era. For this purpose, such a field is promoted to a dynamical variable, inspired by tensor formalism. By working to quadratic order in the antisymmetric tensor, we study the field equations in a Bianchi I universe in two models: an antisymmetric tensor plus scalar field coupled to gravity, or a cosmological constant and a free massless antisymmetric tensor. In the first scenario, numerical integration shows that, in the very early universe, the effects of the antisymmetric tensor can prevail on the scalar field, while at late times the former approaches zero and the latter drives the isotropization of the universe. In the second model, an approximate solution is obtained of a nonlinear ordinary differential equation which shows how the mean Hubble parameter and the difference between longitudinal and orthogonal Hubble parameter evolve in the early universe.

Cosmological perturbations and short distance physics from Noncommutative Geometry

We investigate the possible effects on the evolution of perturbations in the inflationary epoch due to short distance physics. We introduce a suitable non local action for the inflaton field, suggested by Noncommutative Geometry, and obtained by adopting a generalized star product on a Friedmann-Robertson-Walker background. In particular, we study how the presence of a length scale where spacetime becomes noncommutative affects the gaussianity and isotropy properties of fluctuations, and the corresponding effects on the Cosmic Microwave Background spectrum.

Another Alternative to Compactification: Noncommutative Geometry and Randall-Sundrum Models

We observe that the main feature of the Randall-Sundrum model, used to solve the hierarchy problem, is already present in a class of Yang-Mills plus gravity theories inspired by noncommutative geometry. Strikingly the same expression for the Higgs potential is found in two models which have no apparent connection. Some speculations concerning the possible relationships are given.

Path Integral Approach to Noncommutative Space-Times

We propose a path integral formulation of noncommutative generalizations of spacetime manifold in even dimensions, characterized by a length scale $λ_P$. The commutative case is obtained in the limit $λ_P=0$.

Spacetime at the Planck scale and Path Integral

We discuss a path integral formalism to introduce noncommutative generalizations of spacetime manifold in even dimensions, which have been suggested to be reasonable effective pictures at very small length scales, of the order of Planck length.
