Third post-Newtonian gravitational radiation from two-body scattering II. Hereditary Energy radiation

We compute the hereditary part of the third post-Newtonian accurate gravitational energy radiation from hyperbolic scatterings (and parabolic scatterings) of non-spinning compact objects. We employ large angular momentum ($j$) expansion, and compute it to the relative $1/j^{11}$ order (so the first 12 terms). For parabolic scattering case, the exact solution is computed. At the end, the completely collected expression of the energy radiation upto the third post-Newtonian and from $1/j^{3}$ to $1/j^{15}$ order, is presented including the instantaneous contribution.

From Boundary Data to Bound States III: Radiative Effects

We extend the "boundary-to-bound" (B2B) correspondence to incorporate radiative as well as conservative radiation-reaction effects. We start by deriving a map between the total change in observables due to gravitational wave emission during hyperbolic-like motion and in one period of an elliptic-like orbit, which is valid in the adiabatic expansion for non-spinning as well as aligned-spin configurations. We also discuss the inverse problem of extracting the associated fluxes from scattering data. Afterwards we demonstrate, to all orders in the Post-Minkowskian expansion, the link between the radiated energy and the ultraviolet pole in the radial action in dimensional regularization due to tail effects. This implies, as expected, that the B2B correspondence for the conservative sector remains unchanged for local-in-time radiation-reaction tail effects with generic orbits. As a side product, this allows us to read off the energy flux from the associated pole in the tail Hamiltonian. We show that the B2B map also holds for non-local-in-time terms, but only in the large-eccentricity limit. Remarkably, we find that all of the trademark logarithmic contributions to the radial action map unscathed between generic unbound and bound motion. However, unlike logarithms, other terms due to non-local effects do not transition smoothly to quasi-circular orbits. We conclude with a discussion on these non-local pieces. Several checks of the B2B dictionary are displayed using state-of-the-art knowledge in Post-Newtonian/Minkowskian theory.

Third order post-Newtonian gravitational radiation from two-body scattering: Instantaneous energy and angular momentum radiation

We compute the third post-Newtonian (3PN) accurate instantaneous contributions to the radiated gravitational wave (GW) energy and angular momentum arising from the hyperbolic passages of non-spinning compact objects. The present computations employ 3PN-accurate instantaneous contributions to the far-zone energy and angular momentum fluxes and the 3PN-accurate Keplerian type parametric solution for compact binaries in hyperbolic orbits.

Generalized quasi-Keplerian solution for eccentric, non-spinning compact binaries at 4PN order and the associated IMR waveform

We derive fourth post-Newtonian (4PN) contributions to the Keplerian-type parametric solution associated with the conservative dynamics of eccentric, non-spinning compact binaries. The solution has been computed while ignoring certain zero-average, oscillatory terms arising due to 4PN tail effects. We provide explicit expressions for the parametric solution and various orbital elements in terms of the conserved energy, angular momentum and symmetric mass ratio. Canonical perturbation theory (along with the technique of Pade approximant) is used to incorporate the 4PN nonlocal-in-time tail effects within the action-angles framework. We then employ the resulting solution to obtain an updated inspiral-merger-ringdown (IMR) waveform that models the coalescence of non-spinning, moderately eccentric black hole binaries, influenced by arXiv:1709.02007. Our updated waveform is expected to be valid over similar parameter range as the above reference. We also present a related waveform which makes use of only the post-Newtonian equations and thus is valid only for the inspiral stage. This waveform is expected to work for a much larger range of eccentricity ($e_t \lesssim 0.85$) than our full IMR waveform (which assumes circularization of the binaries close to merger). We finally pursue preliminary data analysis studies to probe the importance of including the 4PN contributions to the binary dynamics while constructing gravitational waveform templates for eccentric mergers.

Gravitational radiation from inspiralling compact objects: Spin effects to fourth Post-Newtonian order

The linear- and quadratic-in-spin contributions to the binding potential and gravitational-wave flux from binary systems are derived to next-to-next-to-leading order in the Post-Newtonian (PN) expansion of general relativity, including finite-size and tail effects. The calculation is carried out through the worldline effective field theory framework. We find agreement in the overlap with the available PN literature and test-body limit. As a direct application, we complete the knowledge of spin effects in the evolution of the orbital phase for aligned-spin circular orbits to fourth PN order. We estimate the impact of the new results in the number of accumulated gravitational-wave cycles. We find they will play an important role in providing reliable physical interpretation of gravitational-wave signals from spinning binaries with future detectors such as LISA and the Einstein Telescope.

Action-angle variables of a binary black hole with arbitrary eccentricity, spins, and masses at 1.5 post-Newtonian order

Accurate and efficient modeling of the dynamics of binary black holes (BBHs) is crucial to their detection through gravitational waves (GWs), with LIGO/Virgo/KAGRA, and LISA in the future. Solving the dynamics of a BBH system with arbitrary parameters without simplifications (like orbit- or precession-averaging) in closed form is one of the most challenging problems for the GW community. One potential approach is using canonical perturbation theory which constructs perturbed action-angle variables from the unperturbed ones of an integrable Hamiltonian system. Having action-angle variables of the integrable 1.5 post-Newtonian (PN) BBH system is therefore imperative. In this paper, we continue the work initiated by two of us in arXiv:2012.06586, where we presented four out of five actions of a BBH system with arbitrary eccentricity, masses, and spins, at 1.5PN order. Here we compute the remaining fifth action using a novel method of extending the phase space by introducing unmeasurable phase space coordinates. We detail how to compute all the frequencies, and sketch how to explicitly transform from the action-angle variables to the usual positions and momenta. This analytically solves the dynamics at 1.5PN. This lays the groundwork to analytically solve the conservative dynamics of the BBH system with arbitrary masses, spins, and eccentricity, at higher PN order, by using canonical perturbation theory.

Deep Learning Model on Gravitational Waveforms in Merging and Ringdown Phases of Binary Black Hole Coalescences

The waveform templates of the matched filtering-based gravitational-wave search ought to cover wide range of parameters for the prosperous detection. Numerical relativity (NR) has been widely accepted as the most accurate method for modeling the waveforms. Still, it is well-known that NR typically requires a tremendous amount of computational costs. In this paper, we demonstrate a proof-of-concept of a novel deterministic deep learning (DL) architecture that can generate gravitational waveforms from the merger and ringdown phases of the non-spinning binary black hole coalescence. Our model takes ${\cal O}$(1) seconds for generating approximately $1500$ waveforms with a 99.9\% match on average to one of the state-of-the-art waveform approximants, the effective-one-body. We also perform matched filtering with the DL-waveforms and find that the waveforms can recover the event time of the injected gravitational-wave signals.

Gravitational radiation from inspiralling compact objects: Spin-spin effects completed at the next-to-leading post-Newtonian order

Using the gravitational potential and source multipole moments bilinear in the spins, first computed to next-to-leading order (NLO) in the post-Newtonian (PN) expansion within the effective field theory (EFT) framework, we complete here the derivation of the dynamical invariants and flux-balance equations, including energy and angular momentum. We use these results to calculate spin-spin effects in the orbital frequency and accumulated phase to NLO for circular orbits. We also derive the linear momentum and center-of-mass fluxes and associated kick-velocity, to the highest relevant PN order. We explicitly demonstrate the equivalence between the quadratic-in-spin source multipoles obtained using the EFT formalism and those rederived later with more traditional tools, leading to perfect agreement for spin-spin radiative observables to NLO among both approaches.

Analytic Keplerian-type parametrization for general spinning compact binaries with the leading order spin-orbit interaction

We derive a fully analytic Keplerian-type parametrization solution to conservative motion of spinning binary in ADM gauge. This solution is able to describe three dimensional motion of binaries of arbitrary eccentricity, mass ratio and initial configuration of spin angular momentum up to the leading order of post-Newtonian(PN) approximation and a linear order in spin. Based on our results waveforms can be quickly computed with high accuracy.

Gravitational waves from compact binaries in post-Newtonian accurate hyperbolic orbits

We derive from first principles third post-Newtonian (3PN) accurate Keplerian-type parametric solution to describe PN-accurate dynamics of non-spinning compact binaries in hyperbolic orbits. Orbital elements and functions of the parametric solution are obtained in terms of the conserved orbital energy and angular momentum in both Arnowitt-Deser-Misner type and modified harmonic coordinates. Elegant checks are provided that include a modified analytic continuation prescription to obtain our independent hyperbolic parametric solution from its eccentric version. A prescription to model gravitational wave polarization states for hyperbolic compact binaries experiencing 3.5PN-accurate orbital motion is presented that employs our 3PN-accurate parametric solution.

Stochastic Dynamics of Infrared Fluctuations in Accelerating Universe

We extend investigations of infrared dynamics in accelerating universes. In the presence of massless and minimally coupled scalar fields, physical quantities may acquire growing time dependences through quantum fluctuations at super-horizon scales. From a semiclassical viewpoint, it was proposed that such infrared effects are described by a Langevin equation. In de Sitter space, the stochastic approach has been proved to be equivalent to resummation of the growing time dependences at the leading power. In this paper, we make the resummation derivation of the Langevin equation in a general accelerating universe. We first consider an accelerating universe whose slow-roll parameter is constant, and then extend the background as the slow-roll parameter becomes time dependent. The resulting Langevin equation contains a white noise term and the coefficient of each term is modified by the slow-roll parameter. Furthermore we find that the semiclassical description of the scalar fields leads to the same stochastic equation as far as we adopt an appropriate time coordinate.
