From Limited Annotated Raw Material Data to Quality Production Data: A Case Study in the Milk Industry (Technical Report)

Industry 4.0 offers opportunities to combine multiple sensor data sources using IoT technologies for better utilization of raw material in production lines. A common belief that data is readily available (the big data phenomenon), is oftentimes challenged by the need to effectively acquire quality data under severe constraints. In this paper we propose a design methodology, using active learning to enhance learning capabilities, for building a model of production outcome using a constrained amount of raw material training data. The proposed methodology extends existing active learning methods to effectively solve regression-based learning problems and may serve settings where data acquisition requires excessive resources in the physical world. We further suggest a set of qualitative measures to analyze learners performance. The proposed methodology is demonstrated using an actual application in the milk industry, where milk is gathered from multiple small milk farms and brought to a dairy production plant to be processed into cottage cheese.

Distributed Binary Detection with Lossy Data Compression

Consider the problem where a statistician in a two-node system receives rate-limited information from a transmitter about marginal observations of a memoryless process generated from two possible distributions. Using its own observations, this receiver is required to first identify the legitimacy of its sender by declaring the joint distribution of the process, and then depending on such authentication it generates the adequate reconstruction of the observations satisfying an average per-letter distortion. The performance of this setup is investigated through the corresponding rate-error-distortion region describing the trade-off between: the communication rate, the error exponent induced by the detection and the distortion incurred by the source reconstruction. In the special case of testing against independence, where the alternative hypothesis implies that the sources are independent, the optimal rate-error-distortion region is characterized. An application example to binary symmetric sources is given subsequently and the explicit expression for the rate-error-distortion region is provided as well. The case of "general hypotheses" is also investigated. A new achievable rate-error-distortion region is derived based on the use of non-asymptotic binning, improving the quality of communicated descriptions. Further improvement of performance in the general case is shown to be possible when the requirement of source reconstruction is relaxed, which stands in contrast to the case of general hypotheses.

Quantum thermodynamics in strong coupling: heat transport and refrigeration

The performance characteristics of a heat rectifier and a heat pump are studied in a non Markovian framework. The device is constructed from a molecule connected to a hot and cold reservoir. The heat baths are modelled using the stochastic surrogate Hamiltonian method. The molecule is modelled by an asymmetric double-well potential. Each well is semi-locally connected to a heat bath composed of spins. The dynamics is driven by a combined system-bath Hamiltonian. The temperature of the baths is regulated by a secondary spin bath composed of identical spins in thermal equilibrium. A random swap operation exchange spins between the primary and secondary baths. The combined system is studied in various system-bath coupling strengths. In all cases the average heat current always flows from the hot towards the cold bath in accordance to the second law of thermodynamics. The asymmetry of the double well generates a rectifying effect meaning that when the left and right baths are exchanged the heat current follows the hot to cold direction. The heat current is larger when the high frequency is coupled to the hot bath. Adding an external driving field can reverse the transport direction. Such a refrigeration effect is modelled by a periodic driving field in resonance with the frequency difference of the two potential wells. A minimal driving amplitude is required to overcome the heat leak effect. In the strong driving regime the cooling power is non-monotonic with the system-bath coupling.

Collaborative Distributed Hypothesis Testing

A collaborative distributed binary decision problem is considered. Two statisticians are required to declare the correct probability measure of two jointly distributed memoryless process, denoted by $X^n=(X_1,\dots,X_n)$ and $Y^n=(Y_1,\dots,Y_n)$, out of two possible probability measures on finite alphabets, namely $P_{XY}$ and $P_{\bar{X}\bar{Y}}$. The marginal samples given by $X^n$ and $Y^n$ are assumed to be available at different locations. The statisticians are allowed to exchange limited amount of data over multiple rounds of interactions, which differs from previous work that deals mainly with unidirectional communication. A single round of interaction is considered before the result is generalized to any finite number of communication rounds. A feasibility result is shown, guaranteeing the feasibility of an error exponent for general hypotheses, through information-theoretic methods. The special case of testing against independence is revisited as being an instance of this result for which also an unfeasibility result is proven. A second special case is studied where zero-rate communication is imposed (data exchanges grow sub-exponentially with $n$) for which it is shown that interaction does not improve asymptotic performance.

Decoherence control: A feedback mechanism based on hamiltonian tracking

Enviroment - caused dissipation disrupts the hamiltonian evolution of all quantum systems not fully isolated from any bath. We propose and examine a feedback-control scheme to eliminate such dissipation, by tracking the free hamiltonian evolution. We determine a driving-field that maximizes the projection of the actual molecular system onto the freely propagated one. The evolution of a model two level system in a dephasing bath is followed, and the driving field that overcomes the decoherence is calculated. An implementation of the scheme in the laboratory using feedback control is suggested.
