A reverse isoperimetric inequality in three-dimensional space forms

A $\lambda$-convex body in a three-dimensional space form $M^3(c)$ of constant curvature $c$ is a compact convex set $K$ whose boundary $\partial K$ has normal curvatures bounded below by a constant $\lambda>0$ (in a weak sense). Within this class, we prove a sharp reverse isoperimetric inequality: among all $\lambda$-convex bodies in $M^3(c)$, with a fixed surface area, the body of minimal volume is the $\lambda$-convex lens, i.e., the domain bounded by two totally umbilical caps of curvature $\lambda$. Moreover, this minimizer is unique. This result confirms Borisenko's Conjecture in the three-dimensional model spaces of constant curvature for $c\neq 0$, and complements recent progress on the conjecture in the Euclidean case $c=0$. As a by-product, our method also yields an alternative proof of the corresponding reverse isoperimetric inequality in two-dimensional hyperbolic space.

Tube formulas for valuations in complex space forms

Given an isometry invariant valuation on a complex space form we compute its value on the tubes of sufficiently small radii around a set of positive reach. This generalizes classical formulas of Weyl, Gray and others about the volume of tubes. We also develop a general framework on tube formulas for valuations in riemannian manifolds.

Projective transformations of convex bodies and volume product

In this paper we study certain variational aspects of the volume product functional restricted to the space of small projective deformations of a fixed convex body. In doing so, we provide a short proof of a theorem by Klartag: a strong version of the slicing conjecture implies the Mahler conjecture. We also exhibit an interesting family of critical convex bodies in dimension $2$ containing saddle points for this functional.

The Weyl tube theorem for K\"ahler manifolds

As sharpened in terms of Alesker's theory of valuations on manifolds, a classic theorem of Weyl asserts that the coefficients of the tube polynomial of an isometrically embedded riemannian manifold $M \hookrightarrow \mathbb R^n$ constitute a canonical finite dimensional subalgebra $\mathcal {L K}(M)$ of the algebra $\mathcal{V} (M)$ of all smooth valuations on $M$, isomorphic to the algebra of valuations on Euclidean space that are invariant under rigid motions. We construct an analogous, larger, canonical subalgebra $\mathcal{KLK}(M)\subset \mathcal{V}(M)$ for K\"ahler manifolds $M$: i) if $\dim M = n $, then $\mathcal{KLK}(M)\simeq \mathrm{Val}^{\mathrm{U}(n)}$, the algebra of valuations on $\mathbb{C}^n$ invariant under the holomorphic isometry group, and ii) if $M\hookrightarrow \tilde M$ is a K\"ahler embedding, then the restriction map $\mathcal{V}(\tilde M) \to \mathcal{V}(M)$ induces a surjection $\mathcal{KLK}(\tilde M)\to \mathcal{KLK}(M)$. This answers a question posed by Alesker in 2010 and gives a structural explanation for some previously known, but mysterious phenomena in hermitian integral geometry.

Crofton formulas in pseudo-Riemannian space forms

Crofton formulas on simply-connected Riemannian space forms allow to compute the volumes, or more generally the Lipschitz-Killing curvature integrals of a submanifold with corners, by integrating the Euler characteristic of its intersection with all geodesic submanifolds. We develop a framework of Crofton formulas with distributions replacing measures, which has in its core Alesker's Radon transform on valuations. We then apply this framework, and our recent Hadwiger-type classification, to compute explicit Crofton formulas for all isometry-invariant valuations on all pseudospheres, pseudo-Euclidean and pseudohyperbolic spaces. We find that, in essence, a single measure which depends analytically on the metric, gives rise to all those Crofton formulas through its distributional boundary values at parts of the boundary corresponding to the different indefinite signatures. In particular, the Crofton formulas we obtain are formally independent of signature.

The Santal\'o point for the Holmes-Thompson boundary area

We explore the notion of Santal\'o point for the Holmes-Thompson boundary area of a convex body in a normed space. In the case where the norm is $C^1$, and in the case where unit ball and convex body coincide, we prove existence and uniqueness. When the normed space has a smooth positively curved unit ball, we exhibit a dual Santal\'o point expressed as an average of centroids of projections of the dual body.

Uniqueness of curvature measures in pseudo-Riemannian geometry

The recently introduced Lipschitz-Killing curvature measures on pseudo-Riemannian manifolds satisfy a Weyl principle, i.e. are invariant under isometric embeddings. We show that they are uniquely characterized by this property. We apply this characterization to prove a K\"unneth-type formula for Lipschitz-Killing curvature measures, and to classify the invariant generalized valuations and curvature measures on all isotropic pseudo-Riemannian space forms.

Curvature Measures of Pseudo-Riemannian Manifolds

The Weyl principle is extended from the Riemannian to the pseudo-Riemannian setting, and subsequently to manifolds equipped with generic symmetric $(0,2)$-tensors. More precisely, we construct a family of generalized curvature measures attached to such manifolds, extending the Riemannian Lipschitz-Killing curvature measures introduced by Federer. We then show that they behave naturally under isometric immersions, in particular they do not depend on the ambient signature. Consequently, we extend Theorema Egregium to surfaces equipped with a generic metric of changing signature, and more generally, establish the existence as distributions of intrinsically defined Lipschitz-Killing curvatures for such manifolds of arbitrary dimension. This includes in particular the scalar curvature and the Chern-Gauss-Bonnet integrand. Finally, we deduce a Chern-Gauss-Bonnet theorem for pseudo-Riemannian manifolds with generic boundary.

Integral geometry of exceptional spheres

The algebras of valuations on $S^6$ and $S^7$ invariant under the actions of $\mathrm G_2$ and $\mathrm{Spin}(7)$ are shown to be isomorphic to the algebra of translation-invariant valuations on the tangent space at a point invariant under the action of the isotropy group. This is in analogy with the cases of real and complex space forms, suggesting the possibility that the same phenomenon holds in all Riemannian isotropic spaces. Based on the description of the algebras the full array of kinematic formulas for invariant valuations and curvature measures in $S^6$ and $S^7$ is computed. A key technical point is an extension of the classical theorems of Klain and Schneider on simple valuations.

Dual curvature measures in hermitian integral geometry

The local kinematic formulas on complex space forms induce the structure of a commutative algebra on the space $\mathrm{Curv}^{\mathrm{U}(n)*}$ of dual unitarily invariant curvature measures. Building on the recent results from integral geometry in complex space forms, we describe this algebra structure explicitly as a polynomial algebra. This is a short way to encode all local kinematic formulas. We then characterize the invariant valuations on complex space forms leaving the space of invariant angular curvature measures fixed.

Kinematic formulas on the quaternionic plane

We introduce different bases for the vector space of $\mathrm{Sp}(2)\mathrm{Sp}(1)$-invariant, translation invariant continuous valuations on the quaternionic plane and determine a complete set of kinematic formulas.

Regularized Riesz energies of submanifolds

Given a closed submanifold, or a compact regular domain, in euclidean space, we consider the Riesz energy defined as the double integral of some power of the distance between pairs of points. When this integral diverges, we compare two different regularization techniques (Hadamard's finite part and analytic continuation), and show that they give essentially the same result. We prove that some of these energies are invariant under Moebius transformations, thus giving a generalization to higher dimensions of the Moebius energy of knots.

Contact measures in isotropic spaces

We revisit the contact measures introduced by Firey, and further developed by Schneider and Teufel, from the perspective of the theory of valuations on manifolds. This reveals a link between the kinematic formulas for area measures studied by Wannerer and the integral geometry of curved isotropic spaces. As an application we find explicitly the kinematic formula for the surface area measure in hermitian space.

Classification of invariant valuations on the quaternionic plane

We describe the orbit space of the action of the group $\mathrm{Sp}(2)\mathrm{Sp}(1)$ on the real Grassmann manifolds $\mathrm{Gr}_k(\mathbb{H}^2)$ in terms of certain quaternionic matrices of Moore rank not larger than $2$. We then give a complete classification of valuations on the quaternionic plane $\mathbb{H}^2$ which are invariant under the action of the group $\mathrm{Sp}(2)\mathrm{Sp}(1)$.

Integral geometry of complex space forms

We show how Alesker's theory of valuations on manifolds gives rise to an algebraic picture of the integral geometry of any Riemannian isotropic space. We then apply this method to give a thorough account of the integral geometry of the complex space forms, i.e. complex projective space, complex hyperbolic space and complex euclidean space. In particular, we compute the family of kinematic formulas for invariant valuations and invariant curvature measures in these spaces. In addition to new and more efficient framings of the tube formulas of Gray and the kinematic formulas of Shifrin, this approach yields a new formula expressing the volumes of the tubes about a totally real submanifold in terms of its intrinsic Riemannian structure. We also show by direct calculation that the Lipschitz-Killing valuations stabilize the subspace of invariant angular curvature measures, suggesting the possibility that a similar phenomenon holds for all Riemannian manifolds. We conclude with a number of open questions and conjectures.

The geometry of canal surfaces and the length of curves in de Sitter space

We find the minimal value of the length in de Sitter space of closed space-like curves with non-vanishing non-space-like geodesic curvature vector. These curves are in correspondence with closed almost-regular canal surfaces, and their length is a natural magnitude in conformal geometry. As an application, we get a lower bound for the total conformal torsion of closed space curves.

Total curvature of complete surfaces in hyperbolic space

We prove a Gauss-Bonnet formula for the extrinsic curvature of complete surfaces in hyperbolic space under some assumptions on the asymptotic behaviour. The result is given in terms of the measure of geodesics intersecting the surface non-trivially, and of a conformal invariant of the curve at infinity.

The Gauss-Bonnet theorem and Crofton type formulas in complex space forms

We compute the measure with multiplicity of the set of complex planes intersecting a compact domain in a complex space form. The result is given in terms of the so-called hermitian intrinsic volumes. Moreover, we obtain two different versions for the Gauss-Bonnet-Chern formula in complex space forms. One of them gives the Gauss curvature integral in terms of the Euler characteristic, and some hermitian intrinsic volumes. The other one, which is shorter, involves the measure of complex hyperplanes meeting the domain. As a tool, we obtain variation formulas in integral geometry of complex space forms.
