Probing Late Neutrino Mass Properties with Supernova Neutrinos

Models of late-time neutrino mass generation contain new interactions of the cosmic background neutrinos with supernova relic neutrinos (SRNs) through exchange of the on-shell light boson, leading to significant modification of the differential SRN flux observed at earth. We consider Abelian U(1) model for generating neutrino masses at low scales and we show that there is a large parameter space in this model for which the changes induced in the flux by the exchange of the light bosons might allow one to distinguish between neutrinos being Majorana or Dirac particles, the type of neutrino mass hierarchy (normal or inverted or quasi-degenerate), and could also possibly determine the absolute values of the neutrino masses. Measurements of the presence of these effects would be possible at the next-generation water Cerenkov detectors enriched with Gadolinium, or a large 100 kton liquid argon detector.

Warped Gravitons at the LHC and Beyond

We study the production and decay of Kaluza-Klein (KK) gravitons at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), in the framework of a warped extra dimension in which the Standard Model (SM) fields propagate. Such a scenario can provide solutions to both the Planck-weak hierarchy problem and the flavor puzzle of the SM. In this scenario, the production via $q \bar{q}$ annihilation and decays to the conventional photon and lepton channels are highly suppressed. However, we show that graviton production via gluon fusion followed by decay to longitudinal $Z/W$ can be significant; vector boson fusion is found to be a sub-dominant production mode. In particular, the ``golden'' $ZZ$ decay mode offers a distinctive 4-lepton signal that could lead to the observation at the LHC with 300 fb$^{-1}$ (SLHC with 3 ab$^{-1}$) of a KK graviton with a mass up to $\sim 2$ ($\sim 3$) TeV for the ratio of the AdS$_5$ curvature to the Planck scale modestly above unity. We argue that (contrary to the lore) such a size of the curvature scale can still be within the regime of validity of the framework. Upgrades beyond the SLHC luminosity are required to discover gravitons heavier than $\sim 4$ TeV, as favored by the electroweak and flavor precision tests in the simplest such models.

LHC Signals from Warped Extra Dimensions

We study production of Kaluza-Klein gluons (KKG) at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) in the framework of a warped extra dimension with the Standard Model (SM) fields propagating in the bulk. We show that the detection of KK gluon is challenging since its production is suppressed by small couplings to the proton's constituents. Moreover, the KK gluon decays mostly to top pairs due to an enhanced coupling and hence is broad. Nevertheless, we demonstrate that for m_{KKG} \lesssim 4 TeV, 100 fb^{-1} of data at the LHC can provide discovery of the KK gluon. We utilize a sizeable left-right polarization asymmetry from the KK gluon resonance to maximize the signal significance, and we explore the novel feature of extremely highly energetic "top-jets". We briefly discuss how the detection of electroweak gauge KK states (Z/W) faces a similar challenge since their leptonic decays (``golden'' modes) are suppressed. Our analysis suggests that other frameworks, for example little Higgs, which rely on UV completion via strong dynamics might face similar challenges, namely (1) Suppressed production rates for the new particles (such as Z'), due to their ``light-fermion-phobic'' nature, and (2) Difficulties in detection since the new particles are broad and decay predominantly to third generation quarks and longitudinal gauge bosons.

Mini Z' Burst from Relic Supernova Neutrinos and Late Neutrino Masses

In models in which neutrinos are light, due to a low scale of symmetry breaking, additional light bosons are generically present. We show that the interaction between diffuse relic supernova neutrinos (RSN) and the cosmic background neutrinos, via exchange of these light scalars, can result in a dramatic change of the supernova (SN) neutrinos flux. Measurement of this effect with current or future experiments can provide a spectacular direct evidence for the low scale models. We demonstrate how the observation of neutrinos from SN1987A constrains the symmetry breaking scale of the above models. We also discuss how current and future experiments may confirm or further constrain the above models, either by detecting the ``accumulative resonance'' that diffuse RSN go through or via a large suppression of the flux of neutrinos from nearby < O(Mpc) SN bursts.

Collider Signals of Top Quark Flavor Violation from a Warped Extra Dimension

We study top quark flavor violation in the framework of a warped extra dimension with the Standard Model (SM) fields propagating in the bulk. Such a scenario provides solutions to both the Planck-weak hierarchy problem and the flavor puzzle of the SM without inducing a flavor problem. We find that, generically, tcZ couplings receive a huge enhancement, in particular the right handed ones can be O(1%). This results in BR(t -> c Z) at or above the sensitivity of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). At the International Linear Collider (ILC), single top production, via e^+ e^- -> t \bar c, can be a striking signal for this scenario. In particular, it represents a physics topic of critical importance that can be explored even with a relatively low energy option, close to the tc threshold. At both the LHC and the ILC, angular distributions can probe the above prediction of dominance of right-handed couplings.

Probing Dark Energy via Neutrino & Supernova Observatories

A novel method for extracting cosmological evolution parameters is proposed, using a probe other than light: future observations of the diffuse anti-neutrino flux emitted from core-collapse supernovae (SNe), combined with the SN rate extracted from future SN surveys. The relic SN neutrino differential flux can be extracted by using future neutrino detectors such as Gadolinium-enriched, megaton, water detectors or 100-kiloton detectors of liquid Argon or liquid scintillator. The core-collapse SN rate can be reconstructed from direct observation of SN explosions using future precision observatories. Our method, by itself, cannot compete with the accuracy of the optical-based measurements but may serve as an important consistency check as well as a source of complementary information. The proposal does not require construction of a dedicated experiment, but rather relies on future experiments proposed for other purposes.

Implications of the measurement of the B^0_s-\bar B^0_s mass difference

We analyze the significant new model independent constraints on extensions of the standard model (SM) that follow from the recent measurements of the B^0_s-\bar B^0_s mass difference. The time-dependent CP asymmetry in B_s -> ψϕ, S_{ψϕ}, will be measured with good precision in the first year of LHC data taking, which will further constrain the parameter space of many extensions of the SM, in particular, next-to-minimal flavor violation. The CP asymmetry in semileptonic B_s decay, A_{SL}^s, is also important to constrain these frameworks, and could give further clues to our understanding the flavor sector in the LHC era. We point out a strong correlation between S_{ψϕ} and A_{SL}^s in a very broad class of new physics models.

A Universe Without Weak Interactions

A universe without weak interactions is constructed that undergoes big-bang nucleosynthesis, matter domination, structure formation, and star formation. The stars in this universe are able to burn for billions of years, synthesize elements up to iron, and undergo supernova explosions, dispersing heavy elements into the interstellar medium. These definitive claims are supported by a detailed analysis where this hypothetical "Weakless Universe" is matched to our Universe by simultaneously adjusting Standard Model and cosmological parameters. For instance, chemistry and nuclear physics are essentially unchanged. The apparent habitability of the Weakless Universe suggests that the anthropic principle does not determine the scale of electroweak breaking, or even require that it be smaller than the Planck scale, so long as technically natural parameters may be suitably adjusted. Whether the multi-parameter adjustment is realized or probable is dependent on the ultraviolet completion, such as the string landscape. Considering a similar analysis for the cosmological constant, however, we argue that no adjustments of other parameters are able to allow the cosmological constant to raise up even remotely close to the Planck scale while obtaining macroscopic structure. The fine-tuning problems associated with the electroweak breaking scale and the cosmological constant therefore appear to be qualitatively different from the perspective of obtaining a habitable universe.

Next to Minimal Flavor Violation

The flavor structure of a wide class of models, denoted as next to minimal flavor violation (NMFV), is considered. In the NMFV framework, new physics (NP), which is required for stabilization of the electroweak symmetry breaking (EWSB) scale, naturally couples (dominantly) to the third generation quarks and is quasi-aligned with the Yukawa matrices. Consequently, new sources of flavor and CP violation are present in the theory, mediated by a low scale of few TeV. However, in spite of the low flavor scale, the most severe bounds on the scale of NP are evaded since these are related to flavor violation in the first two generations. Instead, one typically finds that the NP contributions are comparable in size to SM loop processes. We argue that, in spite of the successful SM unitary triangle fit and contrary to the common lore, such a sizable contribution to Delta F=2 processes of ~ 40% (with arbitrary phase) compared to SM is presently allowed since B-factories are only beginning to constrain these models. Thus, it is very interesting that in the NMFV models one is not forced to separate the scale of NP related to EWSB and the scale of flavor violation. We show briefly that this simple setup includes a wide class of supersymmetric and non-supersymmetric models all of which solve the hierarchy problem. We further discuss tests related to Delta F=1 processes, in particular the ones related to b -> s transition. The b -> s processes are computed using two different hadronic models to estimate the uncertainties involved. In addition, we derive constraints on the NP from B -> Kpi data using only SU(3) flavor symmetry and minimal dynamical assumptions. Finally we argue that in many cases correlating Delta F=2 and Delta F=1 processes is a powerful tool to probe our framework.

Natural Little Hierarchy from a Partially Goldstone Twin Higgs

We construct a simple theory in which the fine-tuning of the standard model is significantly reduced. Radiative corrections to the quadratic part of the scalar potential are constrained to be symmetric under a global U(4) x U(4)' symmetry due to a discrete Z_2 "twin" parity, while the quartic part does not possess this symmetry. As a consequence, when the global symmetry is broken the Higgs fields emerge as light pseudo-Goldstone bosons, but with sizable quartic self-interactions. This structure allows the cutoff scale, Λ, to be raised to the multi-TeV region without significant fine-tuning. In the minimal version of the theory, the amount of fine-tuning is about 15% for Λ= 5 TeV, while it is about 30% in an extended model. This provides a solution to the little hierarchy problem. In the minimal model, the "visible" particle content is exactly that of the two Higgs doublet standard model, while the extended model also contains extra vector-like fermions with masses ~(1-2)TeV. At the LHC, our minimal model may appear exactly as the two Higgs doublet standard model, and new physics responsible for cutting off the divergences of the Higgs mass-squared parameter may not be discovered. Several possible processes that may be used to discriminate our model from the simple two Higgs doublet model are discussed for the LHC and for a linear collider.

Electroweak Baryogenesis from Late Neutrino Masses

Electroweak Baryogenesis, given a first order phase transition, does not work in the standard model because the quark Yukawa matrices are too hierarchical. On the other hand, the neutrino mass matrix is apparently not hierarchical. In models with neutrino mass generation at low scales, the neutrino Yukawa couplings lead to large CP-violation in the reflection probability of heavy leptons by the expanding Higgs bubble wall, and can generate the observed baryon asymmetry of the universe. The mechanism predicts new vector-like leptons below the TeV scale and sizable mu -> e processes.

Right-Handed New Physics Remains Strangely Beautiful

Current data on CP violation in B_d -> eta' K_S and B_d -> phi K_S, taken literally, suggest new physics contributions in b -> s transitions. Despite a claim to the contrary, we point out that right-handed operators with a single weak phase can account for both deviations thanks to the two-fold ambiguity in the extraction of the weak phase from the corresponding CP-asymmetry. This observation is welcome since large mixing in the right-handed sector is favored by many GUT models and frameworks which address the flavor puzzle. There are also interesting correlations with the B_s system which provide a way to test this scenario in the near future.

Split Fermions Baryogenesis from the Kobayashi-Maskawa Phase

A new scenario of baryogenesis is presented, within the split fermions framework. Our model employs a first order phase transition of the localizer field. The standard model (SM), Kobayashi-Maskawa phase induces a sizable CP asymmetry. The usual suppression of CP violation which arises in the SM baryogenesis is absent due to the existence of order one Yukawa couplings before the fermions are localized in the extra dimension. Models of the above type naturally contain B-L violating operators, allowed by the SM symmetries, which induce the baryon asymmetry. Our mechanism demonstrates the following concept: the flavor puzzle and the SM failure to create the baryon asymmetry are linked and may have a common resolution which does not rely on introduction of new CP violating sources.

Strong CP, Flavor, and Twisted Split Fermions

We present a natural solution to the strong CP problem in the context of split fermions. By assuming CP is spontaneously broken in the bulk, a weak CKM phase is created in the standard model due to a twisting in flavor space of the bulk fermion wavefunctions. But the strong CP phase remains zero, being essentially protected by parity in the bulk and CP on the branes. As always in models of spontaneous CP breaking, radiative corrections to theta bar from the standard model are tiny, but even higher dimension operators are not that dangerous. The twisting phenomenon was recently shown to be generic, and not to interfere with the way that split fermions naturally weaves small numbers into the standard model. It follows that out approach to strong CP is compatible with flavor, and we sketch a comprehensive model. We also look at deconstructed version of this setup which provides a viable 4D model of spontaneous CP breaking which is not in the Nelson-Barr class.

B-factory Signals for a Warped Extra Dimension

We study predictions for B-physics in a class of models, recently introduced, with a non-supersymmetric warped extra dimension. In these models few ($\sim 3$) TeV Kaluza-Klein masses are consistent with electroweak data due to bulk custodial symmetry. Furthermore, there is an analog of GIM mechanism which is violated by the heavy top quark (just as in SM) leading to striking signals at $B$-factories:(i) New Physics (NP) contributions to $ΔF= 2$ transitions are comparable to SM. This implies that, within this NP framework, the success of SM unitarity triangle fit is a ``coincidence'' Thus, clean extractions of unitarity angles via e.g. $B \to ππ,ρπ, ρρ, DK$ are likely to be affected, in addition to O(1) deviation from SM prediction in $B_s$ mixing. (ii) O(1) deviation from SM predictions for $B \to X_s l^+ l^-$ in rate as well as in forward-backward and direct CP asymmetry. (iii) Large mixing-induced CP asymmetry in radiative B decays, wherein the SM unamibgously predicts very small asymmetries. Also with KK masses 3 TeV or less, and with anarchic Yukawa masses, contributions to electric dipole moments of the neutron are roughly 20 times larger than the current experimental bound so that this framework has a "CP problem".

Flavor Structure of Warped Extra Dimension Models

We recently showed, in hep-ph/0406101, that warped extra dimensional models with bulk custodial symmetry and few TeV KK masses lead to striking signals at $B$-factories. In this paper, using a spurion analysis, we systematically study the flavor structure of models that belong to the above class. In particular we find that the profiles of the zero modes, which are similar in all these models, essentially control the underlying flavor structure. This implies that our results are robust and model independent in this class of models. We discuss in detail the origin of the signals in B-physics. We also briefly study other NP signatures that arise in rare K decays ($K \to πνν$), in rare top decays [$t \to c γ(Z, gluon)$] and the possibilty of CP asymmetries in $D^0$ decays to CP eigenstates such as $K_S π^0$ and others. Finally we demonstrate that with light KK masses, $\sim3$ TeV, the above class of models with anarchic $5D$ Yukawas has a ``CP problem'' since contributions to the neutron electric dipole moment are roughly 20 times larger than the current experimental bound. Using AdS/CFT correspondence, these extra-dimensional models are dual to a purely 4D strongly coupled conformal Higgs sector thus enhancing their appeal.

Twisted Split Fermions

The observed flavor structure of the standard model arises naturally in "split fermion" models which localize fermions at different places in an extra dimension. It has, until now, been assumed that the bulk masses for such fermions can be chosen to be flavor diagonal simultaneously at every point in the extra dimension, with all the flavor violation coming from the Yukawa couplings to the Higgs. We consider the more natural possibility in which the bulk masses cannot be simultaneously diagonalized, that is, that they are twisted in flavor space. We show that, in general, this does not disturb the natural generation of hierarchies in the flavor parameters. Moreover, it is conceivable that all the flavor mixing and CP-violation in the standard model may come only from twisting, with the five-dimensional Yukawa couplings taken to be universal.

Leptogenesis from Split Fermions

We present a new type of leptogenesis mechanism based on a two-scalar split-fermions framework. At high temperatures the bulk scalar vacuum expectation values (VEVs) vanish and lepton number is strongly violated. Below some temperature, $T_c$, the scalars develop extra dimension dependent VEVs. This transition is assumed to proceed via a first order phase transition. In the broken phase the fermions are localized and lepton number violation is negligible. The lepton-bulk scalar Yukawa couplings contain sizable CP phases which induce lepton production near the interface between the two phases. We provide a qualitative estimation of the resultant baryon asymmetry which agrees with current observation. The neutrino flavor parameters are accounted for by the above model with an additional approximate U(1) symmetry.
