A Dispersive Treatment of $K_{\ell4}$ Decays

$K_{\ell4}$ are for several reasons an especially interesting decay channel of $K$ mesons: $K_{\ell4}$ decays allow an accurate measurement of a combination of $S$-wave $ππ$ scattering lengths, one form factor of the decay is connected to the chiral anomaly and the decay is the best source for the determination of some low energy constants of ChPT. We present a dispersive approach to $K_{\ell4}$ decays, which takes rescattering effects fully into account. Some fits to NA48/2 and E865 measurements and results of the matching to ChPT are shown.

Regge analysis of the pi pi scattering amplitude

The theoretical predictions for the subtraction constants lead to a very accurate dispersive representation of the pi pi scattering amplitude below 0.8 GeV. The extension of this representation up to the maximum energy of validity of the Roy equations (1.15 GeV) requires a more precise input at high energies. In this paper we determine the trajectories and residues of the leading Regge contributions to the pi pi amplitude (Pomeron, f and rho), using factorization, phenomenological parametrizations of the pi N and NN total cross sections at high energy and a set of sum rules which connect the high and low energy properties of pi pi scattering. We find that nonleading Regge terms are necessary in order to achieve a smooth transition from the partial waves to the Regge representation at or below 2 GeV. We obtain thus a Regge representation consistent both with the experimental information at high energies and the Roy equations for the partial waves with l =< 4. The uncertainties in our result for the Regge parameters are sizable but in the solutions of the Roy equations, these only manifest themselves above K-Kbar threshold.

Review of lattice results concerning low energy particle physics

We review lattice results relevant for pion and kaon physics with the aim of making them easily accessible to the particle physics community. Specifically, we review the determination of the light-quark masses, the form factor f_+(0), relevant for the semileptonic K -> pi transition at zero momentum transfer as well as the ratio f_K/f_pi of decay constants and discuss the consequences for the elements V_{us} and V_{ud} of the CKM matrix. Furthermore, we describe the results obtained on the lattice for some of the low-energy constants of SU(2)_LxSU(2)_R and SU(3)_LxSU(3)_R Chiral Perturbation Theory and review the determination of the B_K parameter of neutral kaon mixing. We introduce quality criteria and use these when forming averages. Although subjective and imperfect, these criteria may help the reader to judge different aspects of current lattice computations. Our main results are summarized in section 1.2, but we stress the importance of the detailed discussion that underlies these results and constitutes the bulk of the present review.

Finite volume effects for nucleon and heavy meson masses

We apply the resummed version of the Lüscher formula to analyze finite volume corrections to the mass of the nucleon and of heavy mesons. We show that by applying the subthreshold expansion of the scattering amplitudes one can express the finite volume corrections in terms of only a few physical observables and the size of the box. In the case of the nucleon, the available information about the quark mass dependence of these physical quantities is discussed and used to assess the finite volume corrections to the nucleon mass as a function of the quark mass including a detailed analysis of the remaining uncertainties. For heavy mesons, the Lüscher formula is derived both fully relativistically and in a nonrelativistic approximation and a first attempt at a numerical analysis is made.

Twisted Mass Finite Volume Effects

We calculate finite volume effects on the pion masses and decay constant in twisted mass lattice QCD (tmLQCD) at finite lattice spacing. We show that the lighter neutral pion in tmLQCD gives rise to finite volume effects that are exponentially enhanced when compared to those arising from the heavier charged pions. We demonstrate that the recent two flavour twisted mass lattice data can be better fitted when twisted mass effects in finite volume corrections are taken into account.

A New Dispersive Analysis of eta --> 3 pi

We present a new dispersive analysis of the isospin breaking decay eta --> 3 pi. The resulting representation of the decay amplitude allows us to determine the quark mass double ratio Q and we find as a preliminary result Q = 22.3 +/- 0.4. Finally, we discuss a number of improvements that we intend to implement in the future.

Supersymmetric models with minimal flavour violation and their running

We revisit the formulation of the principle of minimal flavor violation (MFV) in the minimal supersymmetric extension of the standard model, both at moderate and large tan(beta), and with or without new CP-violating phases. We introduce a counting rule which keeps track of the highly hierarchical structure of the Yukawa matrices. In this manner, we are able to control systematically which terms can be discarded in the soft SUSY breaking part of the Lagrangian. We argue that for the implementation of this counting rule, it is convenient to introduce a new basis of matrices in which both the squark (and slepton) mass terms as well as the trilinear couplings can be expanded. We derive the RGE for the MFV parameters and show that the beta functions also respect the counting rule. For moderate tan(beta), we provide explicit analytic solutions of these RGE and illustrate their behaviour by analyzing the neighbourhood (also switching on new phases) of the SPS-1a benchmark point. We then show that even in the case of large tan(beta), the RGE remain valid and that the analytic solutions obtained for moderate tan(beta) still allow us to understand the most important features of the running of the parameters, as illustrated with the help of the SPS-4 benchmark point.

Isospin breaking in Kl4 decays

Data on Ke4 decays allow one to extract experimental information on the elastic pi pi scattering amplitude near threshold, and to confront the outcome of the analysis with predictions made in the framework of QCD. These predictions concern an isospin symmetric world, while experiments are carried out in the real world, where isospin breaking effects - generated by electromagnetic interactions and by the mass difference of the up and down quarks - are always present. We discuss the corrections required to account for these, so that a meaningful comparison with the predictions becomes possible. In particular, we note that there is a spectacular isospin breaking effect in Ke4 decays. Once it is taken into account, the previous discrepancy between NA48/2 data on Ke4 decays and the prediction of pi pi scattering lengths disappears.

Theoretical progress on pi pi scattering lengths and phases

pi pi scattering at low energy is sensitive to the structure of the QCD vacuum. I review the calculations of the pi pi scattering lengths and phases, and group them in three cathegories: 1. those based on very general theoretical constraints (like dispersion relations and crossing symmetry) and phenomenology, 2. those which in addition make explicit use of chiral symmetry, 3. the first-principle ones, done with lattice QCD. I then compare these to the experimental results. Thanks to recent progress in all these and in the experimental determination of the scattering lengths we are improving substantially our knowledge of the QCD vacuum.

Cusps in K --> 3 pi decays

The pion mass difference generates a pronounced cusp in K --> 3 pi decays. As has recently been pointed out by Cabibbo and Isidori, an accurate measurement of the cusp may allow one to pin down the S-wave pi pi scattering lengths to high precision. Here, we present and illustrate an effective field theory framework that allows one to determine the structure of this cusp in a straightforward manner. The strictures imposed by analyticity and unitarity are respected automatically.

Mass and width of the lowest resonance in QCD

We demonstrate that near the threshold, the pi pi scattering amplitude contains a pole with the quantum numbers of the vacuum - commonly referred to as the sigma - and determine its mass and width within small uncertainties. Our derivation does not involve models or parametrizations, but relies on a straightforward calculation based on the Roy equation for the isoscalar S-wave.

Finite volume effects for the pion mass at two loops

We evaluate the pion mass in finite volume to two loops within Chiral Perturbation Theory. The results are compared with a recently proposed extension of the asymptotic formula of Luscher. We find that contributions, which were neglected in the latter, are numerically very small at the two-loop level and conclude that for Mpi*L>2, L>2fm the finite volume effects in the meson sector are analytically well under control.

The pion and proton mass in finite volume

We calculate the finite volume effects for the pion and nucleon mass. For the pion mass we present the results of a full two-loop calculation in chiral perturbation theory. The outcome shows that the resummed version of the Luscher formula we presented in an earlier work does indeed give an excellent approximation to the two-loop result. In view of this result we apply the same resummed formula to the nucleon mass. In the nucleon sector the extension of the chiral expansion to higher quark masses appears to be more problematic and it is therefore more difficult to make reliable predictions for the size of the finite volume effects. We present some preliminary numerical estimates.

Theoretical Aspects of the Pion-Pion Interaction

We give a brief review of the theoretical description of low energy pion-pion scattering by the combined use of Chiral Perturbation Theory and Roy equations, an update of the Regge parametrization of $ππ$ cross sections at high energies, and a short discussion of the scalar radius of the pion.

Finite volume effects for meson masses and decay constants

We present a detailed numerical study of finite volume effects for masses and decay constants of the octet of pseudoscalar mesons. For this analysis we use chiral perturbation theory and asymptotic formulae a la Luscher and propose an extension of the latter beyond the leading exponential term. We argue that such a formula, which is exact at the one-loop level, gives the numerically dominant part at two loops and beyond. Finally, we discuss the possibility to determine low energy constants from the finite volume dependence of masses and decay constants.

Finite volume effects in chiral perturbation theory

There has recently been an intense activity in the study of finite volume effects by means of chiral perturbation theory. In this contribution I review recent work in this field both for the epsilon-- (Mpi L \lesssim 1) and the p--regime (Mpi L \gg 1). For the latter I emphasize the importance of going beyond leading order calculations in chiral perturbation theory and the usefulness of asymptotic formulae a la L"uscher used in combination with CHPT.

An asymptotic formula for the pion decay constant in a large volume

We derive an asymptotic formula a la Luscher for the finite volume correction to the pion decay constant: this is expressed as an integral over the < 3 π| A_μ|0 > amplitude after proper subtraction of the pion pole contribution. We analyze the formula numerically at leading and next-to-leading order in the chiral expansion.
