New insights into the $b\rightarrow c \bar{u}q$ puzzle through Top-Bottom synergies

Anomalies in the non-leptonic $\bar{B}^0\rightarrow D^{(*)+}K^{(*)-}$ and $\bar{B}^0_s\rightarrow D^{(*)+}_sπ^-$ decays may be an indication of physics beyond the Standard Model, but the large deviations require strongly coupled new physics that should be visible at colliders. We explore three new directions that could lead to viable new physics models, performing a detailed collider study to examine the possible weakening of previously known constraints on additional $SU(2)_L$ doublets. Our results show that, despite the difficulty of probing $t\bar{t}$ final states, increasing the branching ratio to this decay mode does not significantly weaken the bounds on weak doublet scalars, as additionally existing charged Higgs searches are equally strong. Beyond this, we analyse a potentially large breakdown of QCD factorisation by including large-power corrections to $B$ decays, and the effect of diluting collider searches with multi-scalar extensions. We find that these typical model-building routes for constructing a viable scenario remain constrained by collider measurements, indicating that these non-leptonic anomalies remain among the most puzzling discrepancies from the SM.

Quadruple-Higgs boson production at the high-luminosity LHC

We investigate the production of four Higgs bosons via gluon fusion at the high-luminosity LHC. We construct a phenomenological analysis of the eight-$b$-jet final state and use a multivariate analysis to derive expected simultaneous constraints on the triple and quartic Higgs boson self-coupling modifications. At 95% confidence level, the resulting region projects onto $-10.3<c_3<11.2$ and $-222<d_4<234$, where $c_3=κ_3-1$ and $d_4=κ_4-1$. We also examine how quadruple-Higgs boson production can enter a triple-Higgs boson signal region requiring at least six $b$-tagged jets. In addition, we consider two extensions of the Standard Model scalar sector: a one-real-singlet extension yielding the direct resonant process $pp\rightarrow S\rightarrow hhhh$, and a two-real-singlet extension yielding the cascade $pp\rightarrow h_3\rightarrow h_2h_2\rightarrow (hh)(hh)$, where $S$, $h_2$ and $h_3$ are new scalar resonances. For these processes, we derive expected upper limits on the quadruple-Higgs boson production cross sections as functions of the new scalar masses.

Triple Higgs Boson Production with Two Heavy Scalars at the LHC via a Simplified Approach

We investigate triple Higgs boson production at the CERN LHC, in models containing two new heavy neutral scalar particles. We apply a simplified factorized approach in the narrow-width approximation to double-resonant triple Higgs boson production, and demonstrate that relevant constraints can be derived on models with extended scalar sectors, during the high-luminosity phase of the LHC. We also find, within an explicit two-real-singlet model and for the cut-based 6 $b$-jet analysis considered here, that the double-resonant contribution captures the dominant features of the signal, while non-resonant components have a limited impact on the expected sensitivity. The method therefore provides a fast approximate framework for models in which triple Higgs boson production is dominated by a narrow double-resonant topology.

QCD-factorization amplitudes from flavour symmetries: beyond the $SU(3)$ symmetric case

Using experimental information on branching ratios as well as direct and mixing-induced CP asymmetries, we perform a data-driven analysis of charmless non-leptonic $B \to PP$ decays, where $P$ is any of the light pseudoscalar mesons. Implementing flavour-$SU(3)$ breaking at the level of transition form factors, decay constants and phase space factors, we find a good fit to the current experimental data. Our best-fit point materializes in QCD-factorization amplitudes whose central values resemble many features of the dynamical predictions obtained within the QCD factorization framework. Moreover, we do not find any strong indications that the size of annihilation amplitudes is numerically enhanced beyond the naïve $Λ_{\textrm{QCD}}/m_b$ scaling. Subsequently, we address a number of phenomenological applications, among which are various flavour puzzles that have been persisting in non-leptonic $B$ decays for quite some time.

Optimised Inference of Quantum Phenomena in High-Energy Collider Experiments

Entanglement, a fundamental phenomenon of quantum theory, has recently been observed in processes in high-energy physics. This opens new avenues for probing quantum effects in relativistic regimes, but also poses conceptual and technical challenges. We develop a general framework based on shadow tomography techniques for characterising spin-spin correlations in collider experiments. This improves the analysis of spin-spin entanglement, where relativistic motion couples spin and momentum and the momenta of the investigated particles are not under experimental control. As a proof of concept we illustrate the application of our formalism to top quark pair production at the Large Hadron Collider at CERN. The framework, however, is general and flexible and can be readily applied to more complex final states and systems with more particles.

Extracting Higgs Self-Coupling Constraints through Triple Higgs Boson Production at Future Hadron Colliders

We present a systematic study of triple Higgs boson production at future high-energy hadron colliders, using the six-$b$-jet final state as a probe of the Higgs self-interactions. We conduct, under realistic detector smearing assumptions, both a traditional cut-based analysis, and a multivariate one using gradient boosting. The multivariate strategy is found to enhance sensitivity to beyond the Standard Model effects on the Higgs boson's self-couplings, while preserving large signal event yields, thus enabling more robust statistical inference. This allows us to assess the impact of detector effects, systematic uncertainties, background normalisation, as well as different truncation choices in an effective-field-theory description of the new physics effects possibly affecting the Higgs boson's self-interactions. Our results demonstrate that statistically-meaningful and perturbative-unitarity-compatible constraints on the trilinear and quartic Higgs boson self-couplings can be achieved, provided that systematic uncertainties are controlled at the few-percent level. Finally, we extrapolate our results to various collider energies and luminosities, demonstrating in particular that an 85 TeV proton-proton collider performs comparably to a 100 TeV machine. Altogether, our findings therefore establish the six-$b$ channel as a viable probe of the Higgs self-interactions at most future hadron collider options currently being examined by the high-energy physics community.

Impact on $L$-observables of a new combined analysis of $B_{d,s}\to K^{(*)}$ form factors

We explore the impact of a combined analysis of $B_{d,s}\to K^{(*)}$ form factors on a set of $L$-observables. The $L$-observables are constructed from ratios of branching fractions in $B_{s}\to VV,PP,PV$ versus $B_d \to VV,PP,PV$ decays with $P=K^0,\bar{K}^0$ and $V=K^{*0},\bar{K}^{*0}$, thereby partially reducing their hadronic uncertainties. We show the change of the Standard Model predictions of the $L$-observables under different determinations of the ratio of the relevant form factors (with correlations) including lattice QCD data and a novel light-cone sum rule analysis. In addition, we provide precise results for all $B_{d,s} \to K^{(*)}$ form factors in machine-readable files. We find that the inclusion of our up-to-date results, as well as the use or omission of lattice QCD data for the form factors, has a significant impact on the $L$-observables. We also discuss how the New Physics interpretation is affected by the updated form factors and present revised predictions for the mechanism identified in our analysis of $B \to VP$ decays, now employing more suitable new experimental observables defined in this paper.

Triple Higgs boson production and electroweak phase transition in the two-real-singlet model

The production of three Higgs bosons at hadron colliders can be enhanced by a double-resonant effect in the $\mathbb{Z}_2$-symmetric two-real-singlet extension of the Standard Model, making it potentially observable in future LHC runs. The production rate is maximized for large scalar couplings, which prompts us to carefully reconsider the perturbativity constraints on the theory. This leads us to construct a new set of 140 benchmark points that have a triple Higgs boson production cross-section at least 100 times larger than the SM value. Furthermore, we study the dynamics of the electroweak phase transition, both analytically at leading order, and numerically without the high-temperature expansion. Both analyses indicate that a first-order phase transition is incompatible with the requirement that both singlets have a non-zero vev in the present-day vacuum, as required by doubly-enhanced triple Higgs boson production. Allowing instead one of the singlets to remain at zero field value opens up the possibility of a first-order phase transition, while di-Higgs boson production can still be enhanced by a (single) resonance.

Collider-Flavour Complementarity from the bottom to the top

Motivated by recently observed anomalies in the flavour sector, we analyse the potential of measurements of top quarks at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) to provide complementary constraints on interactions that shape low-energy precision investigations in the $B$ sector. The measurement of top quark properties, such as the top width and the abundant top pair production channels, are already reaching the percent level at this relatively early stage of the LHC phenomenology program. A focused analysis of four-fermion interactions, employing effective field theory without flavour structure assumptions and incorporating renormalization group evolution effects, bridges $B$ meson scale phenomena with key top quark measurements. We demonstrate that the LHC is increasingly competitive with, and complementary to, flavour physics constraints. Our results, which include a first comprehensive analysis of non-leptonic B decays in this context, suggest that the LHC's top physics program could serve as a valuable, complementary tool in the search for physics beyond the Standard Model within the flavour sector.

HHH Whitepaper

We here report on the progress of the HHH Workshop, that took place in Dubrovnik in July 2023. After the discovery of a particle that complies with the properties of the Higgs boson of the Standard Model, all Standard Model (SM) parameters are in principle determined. However, in order to verify or falsify the model, the full form of the potential has to be determined. This includes the measurement of the triple and quartic scalar couplings. We here report on ongoing progress of measurements for multi-scalar final states, with an emphasis on three SM-like scalar bosons at 125 GeV, but also mentioning other options. We discuss both experimental progress and challenges as well as theoretical studies and models that can enhance such rates with respect to the SM predictions

Optimised observables and new physics prospects in the penguin-mediated decays $B_{d(s)}\to K^{(*)0}ϕ$

We study penguin-mediated $\bar{B}_{d(s)}\to\bar{K}^{*0}(K^{*0})ϕ$ transitions, proposing a new optimised observable $L_{K^*ϕ}$ from the ratio of the corresponding branching ratios of these decays, with limited hadronic uncertainties and enhanced New Physics sensitivity. It deviates by $1.48σ$ between its experimental value and SM determination within QCD factorisation. This can be accommodated together with significant deviations found in the $K^{(*)}\bar{K}^{(*)}$ modes in our earlier works if New Physics affects either the QCD penguin operator $Q_4$ or the chromomagnetic dipole operator $Q_{8g}$ for both $b\to d$ and $b\to s$ transitions. The allowed range for the Wilson coefficients $C_{4s,8gs}$ is narrower than $C_{4d,8gd}$ since the $b\to s$ transition channel $\bar{B}_d\to\bar{K}^{*0}ϕ$ is in better agreement with the SM. However, if we add the measured $\bar{B}_{d}\to \bar{K}^{0}ϕ$ branching ratio, simultaneous explanation of all experimental data for $K^{(*)}\bar{K}^{(*)}$ and $K^*(\bar{K}^{(*)})ϕ$ channels in terms of New Physics in $C_{4d,s}$ or $C_{8gd,s}$ only, is not possible. They can be explained more easily if we assume New Physics in both $f=d,s$ sectors. The addition of the branching ratios of the charged modes $B^-\to K^{(*)-}ϕ$ to the above mix of observables results in a reduction of the parameter space for the $(C_{4f},C_{6f})$ scenario, while discarding the $(C_{6f},C_{8gf})$ scenario completely. This is because of the discrepancy of more than 1 $σ$ between the experimental measurements of the branching ratios of the $\bar{B}_{d}(B^-)\to\bar{K}^0(K^-)ϕ$ transitions. This provides a strong incentive for the LHCb/Belle II experiments to measure the branching ratios of $\bar{B}_{d}\to\bar{K}^{(*)0}ϕ$, $\bar{B}_s\to K^{*0}ϕ$ and particularly $B^-\to K^-ϕ$ to confirm or dismiss the conclusions hinted at by present data.

Multi-Higgs Boson Production with Anomalous Interactions at Current and Future Proton Colliders

We investigate multi-Higgs boson production at proton colliders, in a framework involving anomalous interactions, focusing on triple Higgs boson production. We consider modifications to the Higgs boson self-couplings, to the Yukawa interactions, as well as new contact interactions of Higgs bosons with either quarks or gluons. To this end, we have developed a MadGraph5_aMC@NLO loop model, publicly available at https://gitlab.com/apapaefs/multihiggs_loop_sm, designed to incorporate the relevant operators in the production of multiple Higgs bosons (and beyond). We have performed cross section fits at various energies over the anomalous interactions, and have derived constraints on the most relevant anomalous coefficients, through detailed phenomenological analyses at proton-proton collision energies of 13.6 TeV and 100 TeV, through the 6 $b$-jet final state.

A new puzzle in non-leptonic B decays

We propose a set of new optimized observables using penguin mediated $\bar{B}_d$ and $\bar{B}_s$ decays: ${\bar B}_{d,s} \to K^{*0} \bar{K}^{*0}$, ${\bar B}_{d,s} \to K^{0} \bar{K}^{0}$, ${\bar B}_{d,s} \to K^{0} \bar{K}^{*0}$ and ${\bar B}_{d,s} \to \bar{K}^{0} {K^{*0}}$ together with their CP conjugate partners. These observables are substantially cleaner than the corresponding branching ratios, which are plagued by large end point divergences. We find that the dominant contribution to the uncertainties of these observables stem from the corresponding form factors. The Standard Model estimates for these observables corresponding to the $K^{*0}\bar{K}^{*0}$ and $K^0\bar{K}^0$ final states are in tension with their respective experimental numbers at the $\sim2.5 σ$ level. The pattern of deviations w.r.t these observables as well as the individual branching ratios suggest that a possible explanation might be new physics both in $b\to s$ and $b\to d$ transitions. We find that, taken one at a time, only the Wilson coefficients $C_{4d,s}^{NP}$ and $C_{8gd,s}^{NP}$ can potentially satisfy all the current experimental data on the branching ratios as well as the optimized observables. Furthermore, such observables involving mixed (pseudoscalar-vector) states like $K^{*0}\bar{K}^0$ etc show distinctive patterns sensitive to these different new physics explanations.

Enhancing $B_s \to e^+ e^-$ to an Observable Level in the Two-Higgs-Doublet Model

As a result of the helicity suppression effect, within the Standard Model the rare decay channel $B_s \to e^+ e^-$ has a decay probability which is five orders of magnitude below current experimental limits. Thus, any observation of this channel within the current or forthcoming experiments will give unambiguous evidence of Physics Beyond the Standard Model. In this work, we present for the first time a New Physics scenario in which the branching fraction $\bar{\mathcal{B}}r(B_s \to e^+ e^-)$ is enhanced up to values which saturate the current experimental bounds. More concretely, we study the general Two-Higgs-Doublet Model (2HDM) with a pseudoscalar coupling to electrons unsuppressed by the electron mass. Furthermore, we demonstrate how this scenario can arise from a UV-complete theory of quark-lepton unification that can live at a low scale. This latter step allows us to establish correlations between $B_s \to e^+ e^-$ and the lepton-flavour-violating decays $τ^{-}\to μ^{-}e^+ e^-$ and $τ\to μγ$.

A new puzzle in non-leptonic B decays

We build a set of new observables using closely related non-leptonic penguin-mediated $B_d$ and $B_s$ decays: ${\bar B}_{d,s}\to K^{*0}\bar{K}^{*0}$, ${\bar B}_{d,s}\to K^{0}\bar{K}^{0}$, ${\bar B}_{d,s}\to K^{0}\bar{K}^{*0}$ and ${\bar B}_{d,s}\to\bar{K}^{0}{K^{*0}}$ together with their CP conjugate partners. These optimised observables are designed to reduce hadronic uncertainties, mainly coming from form factors and power-suppressed infrared divergences, and thus maximize their sensitivity to New Physics (NP). The deviations observed with respect to the SM in the ratios of branching ratios of ${\bar B}_{d,s}\to K^{*0}\bar{K}^{*0}$ ($2.6σ$) and ${\bar B}_{d,s}\to K^{0}\bar{K}^{0}$ ($2.4σ$) can be explained by simple NP scenarios involving the Wilson coefficients ${\cal C}_4$ and ${\cal C}_6$ (QCD penguin operators) and the coefficient ${\cal C}_{8g}$ (chromomagnetic operator). The optimised observables for ${\bar B}_{d,s}\to K^{0}\bar{K}^{*0}$ and ${\bar B}_{d,s}\to\bar{K}^{0}{K^{*0}}$ show distinctive patterns of deviations with respect to their SM predictions under these NP scenarios. The pattern of deviations of individual branching ratios, though affected by significant hadronic uncertainties, suggests that NP is needed both in $b\to d$ and $b\to s$ transitions. We provide the regions for the Wilson coefficients consistent with both optimised observables and individual branching ratios. The NP scenarios considered to explain the deviations of ${\bar B}_{d,s}\to K^{*0}\bar{K}^{*0}$ and ${\bar B}_{d,s}\to K^{0}\bar{K}^{0}$ can yield deviations up to an order of magnitude among the observables that we introduced for ${\bar B}_{d,s} \to K^{0} \bar{K}^{*0}$ and ${\bar B}_{d,s}\to\bar{K}^{0} {K^{*0}}$. Probing these new observables experimentally may confirm the consistency of the deviations already observed and provide a highly valuable hint of NP in the non-leptonic sector.

Estimating QCD-factorization amplitudes through $SU(3)$ symmetry in $B\rightarrow P P$ decays

We estimate the potential size of the weak annihilation amplitudes in QCD factorization as allowed by experimental data. To achieve this goal, we establish a connection between the amplitudes in the QCD factorization and the so-called topological and $SU(3)$-invariant descriptions. Our approach is based purely on the analysis of the tensor structure of the decay amplitudes. By focusing on the processes $B\rightarrow P P$ and considering data from CP asymmetries and branching fractions, we perform a global fit to the $SU(3)$-irreducible quantities assuming minimal theoretical bias. Subsequently we translate the outcome to the QCD factorization decomposition, and find that the most constrained weak annihilation amplitudes are below $4\%$. However, in view of the large uncertainties in several of the experimental input parameters, values up to $30\%$ are allowed in certain cases.
