Partition Functions in Even Dimensional AdS via Quasinormal Mode Methods

In this note, we calculate the one-loop determinant for a massive scalar (with conformal dimension $Δ$) in even-dimensional AdS$_{d+1}$ space, using the quasinormal mode method developed in arXiv:0908.2657 by Denef, Hartnoll, and Sachdev. Working first in two dimensions on the related Euclidean hyperbolic plane $H_2$, we find a series of zero modes for negative real values of $Δ$ whose presence indicates a series of poles in the one-loop partition function $Z(Δ)$ in the $Δ$ complex plane; these poles contribute temperature-independent terms to the thermal AdS partition function computed in arXiv:0908.2657. Our results match those in a series of papers by Camporesi and Higuchi, as well as Gopakumar et al. in arXiv:1103.3627 and Banerjee et al. in arXiv:1005.3044. We additionally examine the meaning of these zero modes, finding that they Wick-rotate to quasinormal modes of the AdS$_2$ black hole. They are also interpretable as matrix elements of the discrete series representations of $SO(2,1)$ in the space of smooth functions on $S^1$. We generalize our results to general even dimensional AdS$_{2n}$, again finding a series of zero modes which are related to discrete series representations of $SO(2n,1)$, the motion group of $H_{2n}$.

Baby de Sitter Black Holes and dS$_3$/CFT$_2$

Unlike three-dimensional Einstein gravity, three-dimensional massive gravity admits asymptotically de Sitter space (dS) black hole solutions. These black holes present interesting features and provide us with toy models to study the dS/CFT correspondence. A remarkable property of these black holes is that they are always in thermal equilibrium with the cosmological horizon of the space that hosts them. This invites us to study the thermodynamics of these solutions within the context of dS/CFT. We study the asymptotic symmetry group of the theory and find that it indeed coincides with the local two-dimensional conformal algebra. The charge algebra associated to the asymptotic Killing vectors consists of two copies of the Virasoro algebra with non-vanishing central extension. We compute the mass and angular momentum of the dS black holes and verify that a naive application of Cardy's formula exactly reproduces the entropy of both the black hole and the cosmological horizon. By adapting the holographic renormalization techniques to the case of dS space, we define the boundary stress tensor of the dual Euclidean conformal field theory.

State/Operator Correspondence in Higher-Spin dS/CFT

A recently conjectured microscopic realization of the dS$_4$/CFT$_3$ correspondence relating Vasiliev's higher-spin gravity on dS$_4$ to a Euclidean $Sp(N)$ CFT$_3$ is used to illuminate some previously inaccessible aspects of the dS/CFT dictionary. In particular it is argued that states of the boundary CFT$_3$ on $S^2$ are holographically dual to bulk states on geodesically complete, spacelike $R^3$ slices which terminate on an $S^2$ at future infinity. The dictionary is described in detail for the case of free scalar excitations. The ground states of the free or critical $Sp(N)$ model are dual to dS-invariant plane-wave type vacua, while the bulk Euclidean vacuum is dual to a certain mixed state in the CFT$_3$. CFT$_3$ states created by operator insertions are found to be dual to (anti) quasinormal modes in the bulk. A norm is defined on the $R^3$ bulk Hilbert space and shown for the scalar case to be equivalent to both the Zamolodchikov and pseudounitary C-norm of the $Sp(N)$ CFT$_3$.

Incompressible Fluids of the de Sitter Horizon and Beyond

There are (at least) two surfaces of particular interest in eternal de Sitter space. One is the timelike hypersurface constituting the lab wall of a static patch observer and the other is the future boundary of global de Sitter space. We study both linear and non-linear deformations of four-dimensional de Sitter space which obey the Einstein equation. Our deformations leave the induced conformal metric and trace of the extrinsic curvature unchanged for a fixed hypersurface. This hypersurface is either timelike within the static patch or spacelike in the future diamond. We require the deformations to be regular at the future horizon of the static patch observer. For linearized perturbations in the future diamond, this corresponds to imposing incoming flux solely from the future horizon of a single static patch observer. When the slices are arbitrarily close to the cosmological horizon, the finite deformations are characterized by solutions to the incompressible Navier-Stokes equation for both spacelike and timelike hypersurfaces. We then study, at the level of linearized gravity, the change in the discrete dispersion relation as we push the timelike hypersurface toward the worldline of the static patch. Finally, we study the spectrum of linearized solutions as the spacelike slices are pushed to future infinity and relate our calculations to analogous ones in the context of massless topological black holes in AdS$_4$.

Future Boundary Conditions in De Sitter Space

We consider asymptotically future de Sitter spacetimes endowed with an eternal observatory. In the conventional descriptions, the conformal metric at the future boundary I^+ is deformed by the flux of gravitational radiation. We however impose an unconventional future "Dirichlet" boundary condition requiring that the conformal metric is flat everywhere except at the conformal point where the observatory arrives at I^+. This boundary condition violates conventional causality, but we argue the causality violations cannot be detected by any experiment in the observatory. We show that the bulk-to-bulk two-point functions obeying this future boundary condition are not realizable as operator correlation functions in any de Sitter invariant vacuum, but they do agree with those obtained by double analytic continuation from anti-de Sitter space.

Asymptotic Symmetries and Charges in De Sitter Space

The asymptotic symmetry group (ASG) at future null infinity (I^+) of four-dimensional de Sitter spacetimes is defined and shown to be given by the group of three-dimensional diffeomorphisms acting on I^+. Finite charges are constructed for each choice of ASG generator together with a two-surface on I^+. A conservation equation is derived relating the evolution of the charges with the radiation flux through I^+.

Wavepacket dynamics of the nonlinear Harper model

The destruction of anomalous diffusion of the Harper model at criticality, due to weak nonlinearity $χ$, is analyzed. It is shown that the second moment grows subdiffusively as $ \sim t^α$ up to time $t^*\sim χ^γ$. The exponents $α$ and $γ$ reflect the multifractal properties of the spectra and the eigenfunctions of the linear model. For $t>t^*$, the anomalous diffusion law is recovered, although the evolving profile has a different shape than in the linear case. These results are applicable in wave propagation through nonlinear waveguide arrays and transport of Bose-Einstein condensates in optical lattices.

Critical Fidelity

Using a Wigner Lorentzian Random Matrix ensemble, we study the fidelity, $F(t)$, of systems at the Anderson metal-insulator transition, subject to small perturbations that preserve the criticality. We find that there are three decay regimes as perturbation strength increases: the first two are associated with a gaussian and an exponential decay respectively and can be described using Linear Response Theory. For stronger perturbations $F(t)$ decays algebraically as $F(t)\sim t^{-D_2}$, where $D_2$ is the correlation dimension of the critical eigenstates.
