We construct, given $1 0$ there exists a strongly regular Banach spaces where weakly open subsets have radius, at least, $1-\varepsilon$.
We show that there exists a Banach space in which every non-empty weakly open subset of its unit ball has radius one, the maximum possible value, but the infimum of the diameter of its slices is exactly one, so extremely far from its maximum. In fact, we show that there is a wide class of non-isomorphic Banach spaces satisfying this extreme difference between the behaviour of the radius and the diameter of non-empty weakly open subsets.
We compute the Borel complexity of some classes of Banach spaces such as different versions of diameter two properties, spaces satisfying the Daugavet equation or spaces with an octahedral norm. In most of the above cases our computation is even optimal, which completes the research done during the last years around this topic for isomorphism classes of Banach spaces.
We prove that there exists an equivalent norm $\Vert\vert\cdot\vert\Vert$ on $L_\infty[0,1]$ with the following properties: (1) The unit ball of $(L_\infty[0,1],\Vert\vert\cdot\vert\Vert)$ contains non-empty relatively weakly open subsets of arbitrarily small diameter; (2) The set of Daugavet points of the unit ball of $(L_\infty[0,1],\Vert\vert\cdot\vert\Vert)$ is weakly dense; (3) The set of ccw $Δ$-points of the unit ball of $(L_\infty[0,1],\Vert\vert\cdot\vert\Vert)$ is norming. We also show that there are points of the unit ball of $(L_\infty[0,1],\Vert\vert\cdot\vert\Vert)$ which are not $Δ$-points, meaning that the space $(L_\infty[0,1],\Vert\vert\cdot\vert\Vert)$ fails the diametral local diameter 2 property. Finally, we observe that the space $(L_\infty[0,1],\Vert\vert\cdot\vert\Vert)$ provides both alternative and new examples that illustrate the differences between the various diametral notions for points of the unit ball of Banach spaces.
We obtain a result in the spirit of the well-known W. Schachermeyer and H. P. Rosenthal research about the equivalence between Radon-Nikodym and Krein-Milman properties, by showing that, for closed, bounded and convex subsets C of a separable Banach space, under Krein-Milman property for $C$, one has the equivalence between convex point of continuity property and strong regularity both defined for every locally convex topology on C, containing the weak topology on C. Then, under Krein-Milman property, not only the classical convex point of continuity property and strong regularity are equivalent, but also when they are defined for an arbitrary locally convex topology containing the weak topology. We also show that while the unit ball $B$ of $c_0$ fails convex point of continuity property and strong regularity (both defined for the weak topology), threre is a locally convex topology $τ$ on $B$, containing the weak topology on $B$, such that $B$ still fails convex point of continuity property for $τ$, but $B$ surprisingly enjoys strong regularity for $τ$-open sets. Moreover, $B$ satisfies the diameter two property for the topology $τ$, that is, every nonempty $τ$-open subset of $B$ has diameter two even though every $τ$-open subset of $B$ contains convex combinations of relative $τ$-open subsets with arbitrarily small diameter, that is, $B$ fails the strong diameter two property for the topology $τ$. This stresses the known extreme differences up to now between those diameter two properties from a topological point of view.
We study Banach spaces with a weak stable unit ball, that is Banach spaces where every convex combination of relatively weakly open subsets in its unit ball is again a relatively weakly open subset in its unit ball. It is proved that the class of $L_1$ preduals with a weak stable unit ball agree with those $L_1$ preduals which are purely atomic, that is preduals of $\ell_1(Γ)$ for some set $Γ$, getting in this way a complete geometrical characterization of purely atomic preduals of $L_1$, which answers a setting problem. As a consequence, we prove the equivalence for $L_1$ preduals of different properties previously studied by other authors, in terms of slices around weak stability. Also we get the weak stability of the unit ball of $C_0(K,X)$ whenever $K$ is a Hausdorff and scattered locally compact space and $X$ has a norm stable and weak stable unit ball, which gives the weak stability of the unit ball in $C_0(K,X)$ for finite-dimensional $X$ with a stable unit ball and $K$ as above. Finally we prove that Banach spaces with a weak stable unit ball satisfy a very strong new version of diameter two property.
In contrast with the separable case, we prove that the existence of almost $L$-orthogonal vectors in a nonseparable Banach space $X$ (octahedrality) does not imply the existence of nonzero vectors in $X^{**}$ being $L$-orthogonal to $X$, which shows that the answer to an environment question in [9] is negative. Furthermore, we prove that the abundance of almost $L$-orthogonal vectors in a Banach space $X$ (almost Daugavet property) whose density character is $ω_1$ implies the abundance of nonzero vectors in $X^{**}$ being $L$-orthogonal to $X$. In fact, we get that a Banach space $X$ whose density character is $ω_1$ verifies the Daugavet property if, and only if, the set of vectors in $X^{**}$ being $L$-orthogonal to $X$ is weak-star dense in $X^{**}$. We also prove that, under CH, the previous characterisation is false for Banach spaces with larger density character. Finally, some consequences on Daugavet property in the setting of $L$-embedded spaces are obtained.
We prove that every separable Banach space containing $\ell_1$ can be equivalently renormed so that its bidual space is octahedral, which answers, in the separable case, a question by Godefroy in 1989. As a direct consequence, we obtain that every dual Banach space, with a separable predual, failing to be strongly regular (that is, without convex combinations of slices with diameter arbitrarily small for some closed, convex and bounded subset) can be equivalently renormed with a dual norm to satisfy the strong diameter two property (that is, such that every convex combination of slices in its unit ball has diameter two).
We give two examples of polyhedral Banach spaces failing all the diameter two properties, showing that there is not any connection between polyhedrality and the diameter two properties.
The aim of this note is to study octahedrality in vector valued Lipschitz-free Banach spaces on a metric space under topological hypotheses on it. As a consequence, we get that the space of Lipschitz functions on a metric space valued in a dual Banach space satisfies the weak-star strong diameter two property, under natural topological hipothesess on the metric space. Also, we show an example proving that these hypotheses are optimal.
The aim of this note is study the topology generated by Lipschitz slices in the unit sphere of a Banach space. We prove that the above topology agrees with the weak topology in the unit sphere and, as a consequence, we obtain Lipschitz characterizations of classical linear topics in Banach spaces, as Radon-Nikodym property, convex point of continuity property and strong regularity, which shows that the above classical linear properties only depend on the natural uniformity in the Banach space given by the metric and the linear structure.
We show that every Banach space containing isomorphic copies of $c_0$ can be equivalently renormed so that every nonempty relatively weakly open subset of its unit ball has diameter 2 and, however, its unit ball still contains convex combinations of slices with diameter arbitrarily small, which improves in a optimal way the known results about the size of this kind of subsets in Banach spaces.
We study the diameter two properties in the spaces $JH$, $JT_\infty$ and $JH_\infty$. We show that the topological dual space of the previous Banach spaces fails every diameter two property. However, we prove that $JH$ and $JH_{\infty}$ satisfy the strong diameter two property, and so the dual norm of these spaces is octahedral. Also we find a closed hyperplane $M$ of $JH_\infty$ whose topological dual space enjoys the $w^*$-strong diameter two property and also $M$ and $M^*$ have an octahedral norm.
We study when diameter two properties pass down to subspaces. We obtain that the slice two property (respectively diameter two property, strong diameter two property) passes down from a Banach space $X$ to a subspace $Y$ whenever $Y$ is complemented by a norm one projection with finite-dimensional kernel (respectively the quotient $X/Y$ is finite dimensional, $X/Y$ is strongly regular). Also we study the same problem for dual properties of the above ones, as having octahedral, weakly octahedral or 2-rough norm.
We study octahedral norms in the space of bounded linear operators between Banach spaces. In fact, we prove that $L(X,Y)$ has octahedral norm whenever $X^*$ and $Y$ have octahedral norm. As a consequence the space of operators $L(\ell_1 ,X)$ has octahedral norm if, and only if, $X$ has octahedral norm. These results also allows us to get the stability of strong diameter 2 property for projective tensor products of Banach spaces, which is an improvement of the known results about the size of nonempty relatively weakly open subsets in the unit ball of the projective tensor product of Banach spaces.
We study the relation between octahedral norms, Daugavet property and the size of convex combinations of slices in Banach spaces. We prove that the norm of an arbitrary Banach space is octahedral if, and only if, every convex combination of $w^*$-slices in the dual unit ball has diameter 2, which answer an open question. As a consequence we get that the Banach spaces with the Daugavet property and its dual spaces have octahedral norms. Also, we show that for every separable Banach space containing $\ell_1$ and for every $\varepsilon >0$ there is an equivalent norm so that every convex combination of $w^*$-slices in the dual unit ball has diameter at least $2-\varepsilon$.
