Intrinsic coupling of orbital excitations to spin fluctuations in Mott insulators

We show how the general and basic asymmetry between two fundamental degrees of freedom present in strongly correlated oxides, spin and orbital, has very profound repercussions on the elementary spin and orbital excitations. Whereas the magnons remain largely unaffected, orbitons become inherently coupled with spin fluctuations in spin-orbital models with antiferromagnetic and ferroorbital ordered ground states. The composite orbiton-magnon modes that emerge fractionalize again in one dimension, giving rise to spin-orbital separation in the peculiar regime where spinons are faster than orbitons.

Bulk and Surface Nanoscale Hole Density Inhomogeneity in HgBa$_2$CuO$_{4+δ}$ and Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+δ}$ Cuprates

It is well established that the hole density in the prototypical superconductor La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$ is very inhomogeneous due to Sr-dopant induced disorder. On the other hand, until recently it is widely believed that the hole distribution in HgBa$_2$CuO$_{4+δ}$ and Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+δ}$ doped by interstitial oxygen is much more uniform. Recent nuclear magnetic resonance measurements indicate, however, that the charge inhomogeneity in HgBa$_2$CuO$_{4+δ}$ is close to that in La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$. Calculations performed in the present paper confirm this observation. We also show that the charge inhomogeneity is most pronounced at the surface layer that can be probed by scanning tunneling microscope. Our simulations demonstrate that, despite having similar amplitudes of charge inhomogeneity, the hole mean free path in HgBa$_2$CuO$_{4+δ}$ is substantially longer than that in La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$. The screening of Coulomb repulsion in HgBa$_2$CuO$_{4+δ}$ is also stronger. These two reasons might explain the difference in superconducting critical temperatures between these two compounds.

Enhanced Pairing Correlations near Oxygen Dopants in Cuprate Superconductors

Recent experiments on Bi-based cuprate superconductors have revealed an unexpected enhancement of the pairing correlations near the interstitial oxygen dopant ions. Here we propose a possible mechanism -- based on local screening effects -- by which the oxygen dopants do modify the electronic parameters within the CuO_2 planes and strongly increase the superexchange coupling J. This enhances the spin pairing effects locally and may explain the observed spatial variations of the density of states and the pairing gap.

Resonant Inelastic X-ray Scattering on Spin-Orbit Coupled Insulating Iridates

We determine how the elementary excitations of iridium-oxide materials, which are dominated by a strong relativistic spin-orbit coupling, appear in Resonant Inelastic X-ray Scattering (RIXS). Whereas the RIXS spectral weight at the L2 x-ray edge vanishes, we find it to be strong at the L3-edge. Applying this to Sr2IrO4, we observe that RIXS, besides being sensitive to local doublet to quartet transitions, meticulously maps out the strongly dispersive delocalized excitations of the low-lying spin-orbit doublets.

Kitaev-Heisenberg Model on Honeycomb Lattice: Possible Exotic Phases in Iridium Oxides $A_2$IrO$_3$

We derive and study a spin one-half Hamiltonian on a honeycomb lattice describing the exchange interactions between Ir$^{4+}$ ions in a family of layered iridates $A_2$IrO$_3$ ($A$=Li,Na). Depending on the microscopic parameters, the Hamiltonian interpolates between the Heisenberg and exactly solvable Kitaev models. Exact diagonalization and a complementary spin-wave analysis reveal the presence of an extended spin-liquid phase near the Kitaev limit and a conventional Néel state close to the Heisenberg limit. The two phases are separated by an unusual stripy antiferromagnetic state, which is the exact ground state of the model at the midpoint between two limits.

Orbital order and possible superconductivity in LaNiO3/LaMO3 superlattices

A hypothetical layered oxide La_2NiMO_6 where NiO_2 and MO_2 planes alternate along the c-axis of ABO_3 perovskite lattice is considered theoretically. Here, M denotes a trivalent cation Al, Ga,... such that MO_2 planes are insulating and suppress the c-axis charge transfer. We predict that correlated e_g electrons in the NiO_2 planes develop a planar x^2-y^2 orbital order driven by the reduced dimensionality and further supported by epitaxial strain from the substrate. Low energy electronic states can be mapped to a single-band t-t'-J model, suggesting favorable conditions for high-T_c superconductivity.

Coulomb Disorder Effects on ARPES and NQR Spectra in Cuprates

The role of Coulomb disorder, either of extrinsic origin or introduced by dopant ions in undoped and lightly-doped cuprates, is studied. We demonstrate that charged surface defects in an insulator lead to a Gaussian broadening of the Angle-Resolved Photoemisson Spectroscopy (ARPES) lines. The effect is due to the long-range nature of the Coulomb interaction. A tiny surface concentration of defects about a fraction of one per cent is sufficient to explain the line broadening observed in Sr$_2$CuO$_2$Cl$_2$, La$_2$CuO$_{4}$, and Ca$_{2}$CuO$_{2}$Cl$_{2}$. Due to the Coulomb screening, the ARPES spectra evolve dramatically with doping, changing their shape from a broad Gaussian form to narrow Lorentzian ones. To understand the screening mechanism and the lineshape evolution in detail, we perform Hartree-Fock simulations with random positions of surface defects and dopant ions. To check validity of the model we calculate the Nuclear Quadrupole Resonance (NQR) lineshapes as a function of doping and reproduce the experimentally observed NQR spectra. Our study also indicates opening of a substantial Coulomb gap at the chemical potential. For a surface CuO$_2$ layer the value of the gap is of the order of 10 meV while in the bulk it is reduced to the value about a few meV.

Magnetically Hidden Order of Kramers Doublets in $d^1$ Systems: Sr$_2$VO$_4$

We formulate and study an effective Hamiltonian for low-energy Kramers doublets of $d^1$-ions on a square lattice. We find that the system exhibits a magnetically hidden order in which the expectation values of the local spin and orbital moments both vanish. The order parameter responsible for a time-reversal symmetry breaking has a composite nature and is a spin-orbital analog of a magnetic octupole. We argue that such a hidden order is realized in the layered perovskite Sr$_2$VO$_4$.

Evolution of Spin-Orbital-Lattice Coupling in the $R$VO$_3$ Perovskites

We introduce a microscopic model which unravels the physical mechanisms responsible for the observed phase diagram of the $R$VO$_3$ perovskites. It reveals a nontrivial interplay between superexchange, the orbital-lattice coupling due to the GdFeO$_3$-like rotations of the VO$_6$ octahedra, and orthorhombic lattice distortions. We find that the lattice strain affects the onset of the magnetic and orbital order by partial suppression of orbital fluctuations. The present approach provides also a natural explanation of the observed reduction of magnon energies from LaVO$_3$ to YVO$_3$.

Spin-orbital entanglement near quantum phase transitions

Spin-orbital entanglement in the ground state of a one-dimensional SU(2)$\otimes$SU(2) spin-orbital model is analyzed using exact diagonalization of finite chains. For $S=1/2$ spins and $T=1/2$ pseudospins one finds that the quantum entanglement is similar at the SU(4) symmetry point and in the spin-orbital valence bond state. We also show that quantum transitions in spin-orbital models turn out to be continuous under certain circumstances, in constrast to the discontinuous transitions in spin models with SU(2) symmetry.

One-dimensional orbital fluctuations and the exotic magnetic properties of YVO$_3$

Starting from the Mott insulator picture for cubic vanadates, we derive and investigate the model of superexchange interactions between V$^{3+}$ ions, with nearly degenerate $t_{2g}$ orbitals occupied by two electrons each. The superexchange interactions are strongly frustrated and demonstrate a strong interrelation between possible types of magnetic and orbital order. We elucidate the prominent role played by fluctuations of $yz$ and $xz$ orbitals which generate ferromagnetic superexchange interactions even in the absence of Hund's exchange. In this limit we find orbital valence bond state which is replaced either by $C$-type antiferromagnetic order with weak $G$-type orbital order at increasing Hund's exchange, or instead by $G$-type antiferromagnetic order when the lattice distortions stabilize $C$-type orbital order. Both phases are observed in YVO$_3$ and we argue that a dimerized $C$-type antiferromagnetic phase with stronger and weaker FM bonds alternating along the c axis may be stabilized by large spin-orbital entropy at finite temperature. This suggests a scenario which explains the origin of the exotic $C$-AF order observed in YVO$_3$ in the regime of intermediate temperatures and allows one to specify the necessary ingredients of a more complete future theory.

Orbital order and fluctuations in Mott insulators

Basic mechanisms controlling orbital order and orbital fluctuations in transition metal oxides are discussed. The lattice driven classical orbital picture, e.g. like in manganites LaMnO$_3$, is contrasted to the quantum behavior of orbitals in frustrated superexchange models as realised in pseudocubic titanites ATiO$_3$ and vanadates AVO$_3$. In YVO$_3$, the lattice and superexchange effects strongly compete -- this explains the extreme sensitivity of magnetic states to temperature and doping. Lifting the $t_{2g}$ orbital degeneracy by a relativistic spin-orbital coupling is considered on example of the layered cobaltates. We find that the spin-orbital mixing of low-energy states leads to unusual magnetic correlations in a triangular lattice of the CoO$_2$ parent compound. Finally, the magnetism of sodium-rich compounds Na$_{1-x}$CoO$_2$ is discussed in terms of a spin/orbital polaronic liquid.

Spin-Orbital Entanglement and Violation of the Goodenough-Kanamori Rules

We point out that large composite spin-orbital fluctuations in Mott insulators with $t_{2g}$ orbital degeneracy are a manifestation of quantum entanglement of spin and orbital variables. This results in a dynamical nature of the spin superexchange interactions, which fluctuate over positive and negative values, and leads to an apparent violation of the Goodenough-Kanamori rules. Fingerprints of spin-orbital physics in cubic Mott insulators: Magnetic exchange interactions and optical spectral weights

The temperature dependence and anisotropy of optical spectral weights associated with different multiplet transitions is determined by the spin and orbital correlations. To provide a systematic basis to exploit this close relationship between magnetism and optical spectra, we present and analyze the spin-orbital superexchange models for a series of representative orbital-degenerate transition metal oxides with different multiplet structure. For each case we derive the magnetic exchange constants, which determine the spin wave dispersions, as well as the partial optical sum rules. The magnetic and optical properties of early transition metal oxides with degenerate $t_{2g}$ orbitals (titanates and vanadates with perovskite structure) are shown to depend only on two parameters, viz. the superexchange energy $J$ and the ratio $η$ of Hund's exchange to the intraorbital Coulomb interaction, and on the actual orbital state. In $e_g$ systems important corrections follow from charge transfer excitations, and we show that KCuF$_3$ can be classified as a charge transfer insulator, while LaMnO$_3$ is a Mott insulator with moderate charge transfer contributions. In some cases orbital fluctuations are quenched and decoupling of spin and orbital degrees of freedom with static orbital order gives satisfactory results for the optical weights. On the example of cubic vanadates we describe a case where the full quantum spin-orbital physics must be considered. Thus information on optical excitations, their energies, temperature dependence and anisotropy, combined with the results of magnetic neutron scattering experiments, provides an important consistency test of the spin-orbital models, and indicates whether orbital and/or spin fluctuations are important in a given compound.

Doping dependence of density response and bond-stretching phonons in cuprates

We explain the anomalous doping dependence of zone boundary $(π,0)$ and $(π,π)$ bond-stretching phonons in the high-temperature superconductor La$_{2-δ}$Sr$_δ$CuO$_4$ in the doping range $0<δ<0.35$. Our calculations are based on a theory for the density response of doped Mott-Hubbard insulators.

Theory of optical spectral weights in Mott insulators with orbital degrees of freedom

Introducing partial sum rules for the optical multiplet transitions, we outline a unified approach to magnetic and optical properties of strongly correlated transition metal oxides. On the example of LaVO$_3$ we demonstrate how the temperature and polarization dependences of different components of the optical multiplet are determined by the underlying spin and orbital correlations dictated by the low-energy superexchange Hamiltonian. Thereby the optical data provides deep insight into the complex spin-orbital physics and the role played by orbital fluctuations.

Quantum Phase Transitions in the One-Dimensional S=1 Spin-Orbital Model: Implications for Cubic Vanadates

We investigate ground-state properties and quantum phase transitions in the one-dimensional S=1 spin-orbital model relevant to cubic vanadates. Using the density matrix renormalization group, we compute the ground-state energy, the magnetization and the correlation functions for different values of the Hund's coupling $J_H$ and the external magnetic field. It is found that the magnetization jumps at a certain critical field, which is a hallmark of the field-induced first-order phase transition. The phase transition driven by $J_H$ is also of first order. We also consider how the lattice-induced ferro-type interaction between orbitals modifies the phase diagram, and discuss the results in a context of the first-order phase transition observed in YVO$_3$ at 77K.

Dimerization versus Orbital Moment Ordering in the Mott insulator YVO$_3$

We use exact diagonalization combined with mean-field theory to investigate the phase diagram of the spin-orbital model for cubic vanadates. The spin-orbit coupling competes with Hund's exchange and triggers a novel phase, with the ordering of $t_{2g}$ orbital magnetic moments stabilized by the tilting of VO$_6$ octahedra. It explains qualitatively spin canting and reduction of magnetization observed in YVO$_3$. At finite temperature an orbital Peierls instability in the $C$-type antiferromagnetic phase induces modulation of magnetic exchange constants even in absence of lattice distortions. The calculated spin structure factor shows a magnon splitting due to the orbital Peierls dimerization.
