Soliton interactions of the Kadomtsev-Petviashvili equation and generation of large-amplitude water waves

We study the maximum wave amplitude produced by line-soliton interactions of the Kadomtsev-Petviashvili II (KPII) equation, and we discuss a mechanism of generation of large amplitude shallow water waves by multi-soliton interactions of KPII. We also describe a method to predict the possible maximum wave amplitude from asymptotic data. Finally, we report on numerical simulations of multi-soliton complexes of the KPII equation which verify the robustness of all types of soliton interactions and web-like structure.

Phase noise of dispersion-managed solitons

We quantify noise-induced phase deviations of dispersion-managed solitons in optical fiber communications and femtosecond lasers. We first develop a perturbation theory for the dispersion-managed nonlinear Schrodinger equation (DMNLSE) in order to compute the noise-induced mean and variance of the soliton parameters. We then use the analytical results to guide importance-sampled Monte-Carlo simulations of the noise-driven DMNLSE. Comparison of these results with those from the original, un-averaged, governing equations confirm the validity of the DMNLSE as a model for many dispersion-managed systems, and quantify the increased robustness of dispersion-managed solitons with respect to noise-induced phase jitter.

Solitons, boundary value problems and a nonlinear method of images

We characterize the soliton solutions of the nonlinear Schroedinger equation on the half line with linearizable boundary conditions. Using an extension of the solution to the whole line and the corresponding symmetries of the scattering data, we identify the properties of the discrete spectrum of the scattering problem. We show that discrete eigenvalues appear in quartets (as opposed to pairs in the initial value problem), and we obtain explicit relations for the norming constants associated to symmetric eigenvalues. The apparent reflection of each soliton at the boundary of the spatial domain is due to the presence of a "mirror" soliton, with equal amplitude and opposite velocity, located beyond the boundary. We then calculate the position shift of the physical solitons as a result of the nonlinear reflection. These results provide a nonlinear analogue of the method of images that is used to solve boundary value problems in electrostatics.

The dispersion-managed Ginzburg-Landau equation and its application to femtosecond lasers

The complex Ginzburg-Landau equation has been used extensively to describe various non-equilibrium phenomena. In the context of lasers, it models the dynamics of a pulse by averaging over the effects that take place inside the cavity. Ti:sapphire femtosecond lasers, however, produce pulses that undergo significant changes in different parts of the cavity during each round-trip. The dynamics of such pulses is therefore not adequately described by an average model that does not take such changes into account. The purpose of this work is severalfold. First we introduce the dispersion-managed Ginzburg-Landau equation (DMGLE) as an average model that describes the long-term dynamics of systems characterized by rapid variations of dispersion, nonlinearity and gain in a general setting, and we study the properties of the equation. We then explain how in particular the DMGLE arises for Ti:sapphire femtosecond lasers and we characterize its solutions. In particular, we show that, for moderate values of the gain/loss parameters, the solutions of the DMGLE are well approximated by those of the dispersion-managed nonlinear Schrodinger equation (DMNLSE), and the main effect of gain and loss dynamics is simply to select one among the one-parameter family of solutions of the DMNLSE.

Initial-boundary value problems for discrete evolution equations: discrete linear Schrodinger and integrable discrete nonlinear Schrodinger equations

We present a method to solve initial-boundary value problems for linear and integrable nonlinear differential-difference evolution equations. The method is the discrete version of the one developed by A. S. Fokas to solve initial-boundary value problems for linear and integrable nonlinear partial differential equations via an extension of the inverse scattering transform. The method takes advantage of the Lax pair formulation for both linear and nonlinear equations, and is based on the simultaneous spectral analysis of both parts of the Lax pair. A key role is also played by the global algebraic relation that couples all known and unknown boundary values. Even though additional technical complications arise in discrete problems compared to continuum ones, we show that a similar approach can also solve initial-boundary value problems for linear and integrable nonlinear differential-difference equations. We demonstrate the method by solving initial-boundary value problems for the discrete analogue of both the linear and the nonlinear Schrodinger equations, comparing the solution to those of the corresponding continuum problems. In the linear case we also explicitly discuss Robin-type boundary conditions not solvable by Fourier series. In the nonlinear case we also identify the linearizable boundary conditions, we discuss the elimination of the unknown boundary datum, we obtain explicitly the linear and continuum limit of the solution, and we write down the soliton solutions.

Noise-induced perturbations of dispersion-managed solitons

We study noise-induced perturbations of dispersion-managed solitons by developing soliton perturbation theory for the dispersion-managed nonlinear Schroedinger (DMNLS) equation, which governs the long-term behavior of optical fiber transmission systems and certain kinds of femtosecond lasers. We show that the eigenmodes and generalized eigenmodes of the linearized DMNLS equation around traveling-wave solutions can be generated from the invariances of the DMNLS equations, we quantify the perturbation-induced parameter changes of the solution in terms of the eigenmodes and the adjoint eigenmodes, and we obtain evolution equations for the solution parameters. We then apply these results to guide importance-sampled Monte-Carlo simulations and reconstruct the probability density functions of the solution parameters under the effect of noise.

Elastic and inelastic line-soliton solutions of the Kadomtsev-Petviashvili II equation

The Kadomtsev-Petviashvili II (KPII) equation admits a large variety of multi-soliton solutions which exhibit both elastic as well as inelastic types of interactions. This work investigates a general class of multi-solitons which were not previously studied, and which do not in general conserve the number of line solitons after interaction. The incoming and outgoing line solitons for these solutions are explicitly characterized by analyzing the $τ$-function generating such solutions. A special family of $N$-soliton solutions is also considered in this article. These solutions are characterized by elastic soliton interactions, in the sense that amplitude and directions of the individual line solitons as $y\to\infty$ are the same as those of the individual line solitons as $y\to-\infty$. It is shown that the solution space of these elastic $N$-soliton solutions can be classified into $(2N-1)!!$ disjoint sectors which are characterized in terms of the amplitudes and directions of the $N$ line solitons.

Soliton solutions of the Kadomtsev-Petviashvili II equation

We study a general class of line-soliton solutions of the Kadomtsev-Petviashvili II (KPII) equation by investigating the Wronskian form of its tau-function. We show that, in addition to previously known line-soliton solutions, this class also contains a large variety of new multi-soliton solutions, many of which exhibit nontrivial spatial interaction patterns. We also show that, in general, such solutions consist of unequal numbers of incoming and outgoing line solitons. From the asymptotic analysis of the tau-function, we explicitly characterize the incoming and outgoing line-solitons of this class of solutions. We illustrate these results by discussing several examples.

On the Whitham equations for the defocusing nonlinear Schrodinger equation with step initial data

The behavior of solutions of the finite-genus Whitham equations for the weak dispersion limit of the defocusing nonlinear Schrodinger equation is investigated analytically and numerically for piecewise-constant initial data. In particular, the dynamics of constant-amplitude initial conditions with one or more frequency jumps (i.e., piecewise linear phase) are considered. It is shown analytically and numerically that, for finite times, regions of arbitrarily high genus can be produced; asymptotically with time, however, the solution can be divided into expanding regions which are either of genus-zero, genus-one or genus-two type, their precise arrangement depending on the specifics of the initial datum given. This behavior should be compared to that of the Korteweg-deVries equation, where the solution is devided into the regions which are either genus-zero or genus-one asymptotically. Finally, the potential application of these results to the generation of short optical pulses is discussed: the method proposed takes advantage of nonlinear compression via appropriate frequency modulation, and allows control of both the pulse amplitude and its width, as well as the distance along the fiber at which the pulse is produced.

Resonance and web structure in discrete soliton systems: the two-dimensional Toda lattice and its fully discrete and ultra-discrete versions

We present a class of solutions of the two-dimensional Toda lattice equation, its fully discrete analogue and its ultra-discrete limit. These solutions demonstrate the existence of soliton resonance and web-like structure in discrete integrable systems such as differential-difference equations, difference equations and cellular automata (ultra-discrete equations).

On a family of solutions of the KP equation which also satisfy the Toda lattice hierarchy

We describe the interaction pattern in the $x$-$y$ plane for a family of soliton solutions of the Kadomtsev-Petviashvili (KP) equation, $(-4u_{t}+u_{xxx}+6uu_x)_{x}+3u_{yy}=0$. Those solutions also satisfy the finite Toda lattice hierarchy. We determine completely their asymptotic patterns for $y\to \pm\infty$, and we show that all the solutions (except the one-soliton solution) are of {\it resonant} type, consisting of arbitrary numbers of line solitons in both aymptotics; that is, arbitrary $N_-$ incoming solitons for $y\to -\infty$ interact to form arbitrary $N_+$ outgoing solitons for $y\to\infty$. We also discuss the interaction process of those solitons, and show that the resonant interaction creates a {\it web-like} structure having $(N_--1)(N_+-1)$ holes.
