Higgs mass implications on the stability of the electroweak vacuum

We update instability and metastability bounds of the Standard Model electroweak vacuum in view of the recent ATLAS and CMS Higgs results. For a Higgs mass in the range 124--126 GeV, and for the current central values of the top mass and strong coupling constant, the Higgs potential develops an instability around $10^{11}$ GeV, with a lifetime much longer than the age of the Universe. However, taking into account theoretical and experimental errors, stability up to the Planck scale cannot be excluded. Stability at finite temperature implies an upper bound on the reheat temperature after inflation, which depends critically on the precise values of the Higgs and top masses. A Higgs mass in the range 124--126 GeV is compatible with very high values of the reheating temperature, without conflict with mechanisms of baryogenesis such as leptogenesis. We derive an upper bound on the mass of heavy right-handed neutrinos by requiring that their Yukawa couplings do not destabilize the Higgs potential.

U(2) and Minimal Flavour Violation in Supersymmetry

Rather than sticking to the full $U(3)^3$ approximate symmetry normally invoked in Minimal Flavour Violation, we analyze the consequences on the current flavour data of a suitably broken $U(2)^3$ symmetry acting on the first two generations of quarks and squarks. A definite correlation emerges between the $ΔF=2$ amplitudes $\cM(K^0 \to \bar K^0)$, $\cM(B_d \to \bar B_d)$ and $\cM(B_s \to \bar B_s)$, which can resolve the current tension between between $\cM(K^0 \to \bar K^0)$ and $\cM(B_d \to \bar B_d)$, while predicting $\cM(B_s \to \bar B_s)$. In particular, the CP violating asymmetry in $B_s \to ψϕ$ is predicted to be positive and above its Standard Model value ($0.05 \lsim S_{ψϕ} \lsim 0.2$). The preferred region for the gluino and the left-handed sbottom masses is below about $1÷1.5$ TeV. An existence proof of a dynamical model realizing the $U(2)^3$ pictured is outlined.

B-decay CP-asymmetries in SUSY with a U(2)^3 flavour symmetry

We study CP asymmetries in rare B decays within supersymmetry with a U(2)^3 flavour symmetry, motivated by the SUSY flavour and CP problems, the hierarchies in the Yukawa couplings and the absence so far of any direct evidence for SUSY. Even in the absence of flavour-blind phases, we find potentially sizable CP violating contributions to b -> s decay amplitudes. The effects in the mixing-induced CP asymmetries in B ->phi K(S) and B -> eta' K(S), angular CP asymmetries in B -> K* mu+ mu- and the direct CP asymmetry in B -> X(s) gamma can be in the region to be probed by LHCb and next generation B factories. At the same time, these effects in B decays are compatible with CP violating contributions to meson mixing, including a non-standard B(s) mixing phase hinted by current tensions in the CKM fit mostly between S(psi K(S)), epsilon(K) and Delta M(B(s))/Delta M(B(d)).

Forward-Backward t tbar Asymmetry from Anomalous Stop Pair Production

We analyse a simple Standard Model (SM) extension with only two new light fields: a scalar partner of the top (stop) (with mass above m_t) and a light neutral fermion chi^0 (with mass of a few GeV), coupled to SM quarks via a Yukawa interaction. We show that such model can lead to a significant enhancement of the forward-backward asymmetry in t tbar production at the Tevatron via the additional t tbar pairs produced from (stop anti-stop) decays. The model satisfies existing constraints on new-physics searches both at low and high energies, and could even address the cosmological dark-matter abundance. The implications for future searches at the LHC are briefly outlined.

Minimal flavour violation extensions of the seesaw

We analyze the most natural formulations of the minimal lepton flavour violation hypothesis compatible with a type-I seesaw structure with three heavy singlet neutrinos N, and satisfying the requirement of being predictive, in the sense that all LFV effects can be expressed in terms of low energy observables. We find a new interesting realization based on the flavour group $SU(3)_e\times SU(3)_{\ell+N}$ (being $e$ and $\ell$ respectively the SU(2) singlet and doublet leptons). An intriguing feature of this realization is that, in the normal hierarchy scenario for neutrino masses, it allows for sizeable enhancements of $μ\to e$ transitions with respect to LFV processes involving the $τ$ lepton. We also discuss how the symmetries of the type-I seesaw allow for a strong suppression of the N mass scale with respect to the scale of lepton number breaking, without implying a similar suppression for possible mechanisms of N production

Higgs-mediated FCNCs: Natural Flavour Conservation vs. Minimal Flavour Violation

We compare the effectiveness of two hypotheses, Natural Flavour Conservation (NFC) and Minimal Flavour Violation (MFV), in suppressing the strength of flavour-changing neutral-currents (FCNCs) in models with more than one Higgs doublet. We show that the MFV hypothesis, in its general formulation, is more stable in suppressing FCNCs than the hypothesis of NFC alone when quantum corrections are taken into account. The phenomenological implications of the two scenarios are discussed analysing meson-antimeson mixing observables and the rare decays B -> mu+ mu-. We demonstrate that, introducing flavour-blind CP phases, two-Higgs doublet models respecting the MFV hypothesis can accommodate a large CP-violating phase in Bs mixing, as hinted by CDF and D0 data and, without extra free parameters, soften significantly in a correlated manner the observed anomaly in the relation between epsilon_K and S_psi_K.

EDMs vs. CPV in B_{s,d} mixing in two Higgs doublet models with MFV

We analyze the correlations between electric dipole moments (EDMs) of the neutron and heavy atoms and CP violation in B_{s,d} mixing in two Higgs doublet models respecting the Minimal Flavour Violation hypothesis, with flavour-blind CP-violating (CPV) phases. In particular, we consider the case of flavour-blind CPV phases from i) the Yukawa interactions and ii) the Higgs potential. We show that in both cases the upper bounds on the above EDMs do not forbid sizable non-standard CPV effects in B_s mixing. However, if a large CPV phase in B_s mixing will be confirmed, this will imply EDMs very close to their present experimental bounds, within the reach of the next generation of experiments, as well as BR(B_{s,d}-> mu^+ mu^-) typically largely enhanced over its SM expectation. The two flavour-blind CPV mechanisms can be distinguished through the correlation between S_psi K_S and S_psi phi that is strikingly different if only one of them is relevant. Which of these two CPV mechanisms dominates depends on the precise values of S_psi phi and S_psi K_S, as well as on the CKM phase (as determined by tree-level processes). Current data seems to show a mild preference for a hybrid scenario where both these mechanisms are at work.

Quark flavour mixing with right-handed currents: an effective theory approach

The impact of right-handed currents in both charged- and neutral-current flavour-violating processes is analysed by means of an effective theory approach. More explicitly, we analyse the structure of dimension-six operators assuming a left-right symmetric flavour group, commuting with an underlying $SU(2)_L \times SU(2)_R \times U(1)_{B-L}$ global symmetry, broken only by two Yukawa couplings. The model contains a new unitary matrix controlling flavour-mixing in the right-handed sector. We determine the structure of this matrix by charged-current data, where the tension between inclusive and exclusive determinations of $|V_{ub}|$ can be solved. Having determined the size and the flavour structure of right-handed currents, we investigate how they would manifest themselves in neutral current processes, including particle-antiparticle mixing, $Z\to b \bar b$, $B_{s,d}\to μ^+μ^-$, $B\to {Xs,K,K*} ν\barν$, and $K\to πν\barν$ decays. The possibility to explain a non-standard CP-violating phase in $B_s$ mixing in this context, and the comparison with other predictive new-physics frameworks addressing the same problem, is also discussed. While a large $S_{ψϕ}$ asymmetry can easily be accommodated, we point out a tension in this framework between $|V_{ub}|$ and $S_{ψK}$.

On epsilon_K beyond lowest order in the Operator Product Expansion

We analyse the structure of long distance (LD) contributions to the CP-violating parameter epsilon_K, that generally affect both the absorptive (Gamma_12) and the dispersive (M_12) parts of the K0 -- K0bar mixing amplitude. We point out that, in a consistent framework, in addition to LD contributions to Im(Gamma_12), estimated recently by two of us, also LD contributions to Im(M_12) have to be taken into account. Estimating the latter contributions the impact of LD effects on epsilon_K is significantly reduced (from -6.0 % to -3.6 %). The overall effect of LD corrections and of the superweak phase being different from 45 degrees is summarised by the multiplicative factor kappa_epsilon = 0.94 +/- 0.02.

Effective theories of electroweak symmetry breaking

We present a brief review of recent attempts to construct effective theories to describe the breaking of the electroweak symmetry in extensions of the Standard Model with new strongly interacting dynamics around the TeV scale. Particular attention is devoted to the analogies of Higgsless models with Chiral Perturbation Theory (the low-energy limit of QCD).

Flavor Physics Constraints for Physics Beyond the Standard Model

In the last decade, huge progress in experimentally measuring and theoretically understanding flavor physics has been achieved. In particular, the accuracy in the determination of the CKM elements has been greatly improved, and a large number of flavor changing neutral current processes, involving b -> d, b -> s and c -> u transitions, and of CP violating asymmetries, have been measured. No evidence for new physics has been established. Consequently, strong constraints on new physics at high scale apply. In particular, the flavor structure of new physics at the TeV scale is strongly constrained. We review these constraints and we discuss which are the future prospects to better understand the flavor structure of physics beyond the Standard Model.

Effective Theories for Flavour Physics beyond the Standard Model

We discuss the role of flavour physics in building effective theories at the TeV scale. Particular attention is devoted to the Minimal Flavour Violation hypothesis, both in the quark and in the lepton sector. Alternative flavour-protection mechanisms, such as the hierarchical fermion profiles of models with a warped fifth dimension, are also briefly discussed.

Violations of lepton-flavour universality in P -> l nu decays: a model-independent analysis

We analyse the violations of lepton-flavour universality in the ratios B(P -> l nu)/B(P -> l' nu) using a general effective theory approach, discussing various flavour-symmetry breaking patterns of physics beyond the SM. We find that in models with Minimal Lepton Flavour Violation the effects are too small to be observed in the next generations of experiments in all relevant meson systems (P = Pi, K, B). In a Grand Unified framework with a minimal breaking of the flavour symmetry, the effects remain small in Pi and K decays while large violations of lepton-flavour universality are possible in B -> l nu decays.

Combining Direct & Indirect Kaon CP Violation to Constrain the Warped KK Scale

The Randall-Sundrum (RS) framework has a built in protection against flavour violation, but still generically suffers from little CP problems. The most stringent bound on flavour violation is due to epsilon_K, which is inversely proportional to the fundamental Yukawa scale. Hence the RS epsilon_K problem can be ameliorated by effectively increasing the Yukawa scale with a bulk Higgs, as was recently observed in arXiv:0810.1016. We point out that incorporating the constraint from epsilon'/ε_K, which is proportional to the Yukawa scale, raises the lower bound on the KK scale compared to previous analyses. The bound is conservatively estimated to be 5.5 TeV, choosing the most favorable Higgs profile, and 7.5 TeV in the two-site limit. Relaxing this bound might require some form of RS flavour alignment. As a by-product of our analysis, we also provide the leading order flavour structure of the theory with a bulk Higgs.

Drell-Yan production of Heavy Vectors in Higgsless models

We study the Drell-Yan production of heavy vector and axial-vector states of generic Higgsless models at hadron colliders. We analyse in particular the l+l-, WZ, and three SM gauge boson final states. In the l+l- case we show how present Tevatron data restricts the allowed parameter space of these models. The two and three gauge boson final states (especially WZ, WWZ, and WZZ) are particularly interesting in view of the LHC, especially for light axial-vector masses, and could shed more light on the role of spin-1 resonances in the electroweak precision tests.

Composite fermions in Electroweak Symmetry Breaking

If the electroweak symmetry is broken by some unspecified strong dynamics, composite fermions may exist with definite transformation properties under SU(2)_L x SU(2)_R/SU(2)_{L+R} and may play a role in giving masses by mixing to all the standard quarks and leptons. Assuming this to be the case, we analyze the role of Singlets, Doublets and Triplets in the ElectroWeak Precision Tests and in Flavour Physics. Doublets and Triplets are generically disfavoured. In the Singlet case, we specify the breaking patterns of the flavour group that allow to keep the CKM picture of flavour physics and we discuss the effects of the mixing between composite and elementary fermions. These mixings affect in particular the rather peculiar LHC phenomenology of the composite fermions.
