Local Riesz transform and local Hardy spaces on Riemannian manifolds with bounded geometry

We prove that if $τ$ is a large positive number, then the atomic Goldberg-type space $\mathfrak{h}^1(N)$ and the space $\mathfrak{h}_{\mathcal R_τ}^1(N)$ of all integrable functions on $N$ whose local Riesz transform $\mathcal R_τ$ is integrable are the same space on any complete noncompact Riemannian manifold $N$ with Ricci curvature bounded from below and positive injectivity radius. We also relate $\mathfrak{h}^1(N)$ to a space of harmonic functions on the slice $N\times (0,δ)$ for $δ>0$ small enough.

Sobolev functions without compactly supported approximations

A basilar property and a useful tool in the theory of Sobolev spaces is the density of smooth compactly supported functions in the space $W^{k,p}(\R^n)$ (i.e. the functions with weak derivatives of orders $0$ to $k$ in $L^p$). On Riemannian manifolds, it is well known that the same property remains valid under suitable geometric assumptions. However, on a complete non-compact manifold it can fail to be true in general, as we prove in this paper. This settles an open problem raised for instance by E. Hebey [\textit{Nonlinear analysis on manifolds: Sobolev spaces and inequalities}, Courant Lecture Notes in Mathematics, vol. 5, 1999, pp. 48-49].

Density problems for second order Sobolev spaces and cut-off functions on manifolds with unbounded geometry

We consider complete non-compact manifolds with either a sub-quadratic growth of the norm of the Riemann curvature, or a sub-quadratic growth of both the norm of the Ricci curvature and the squared inverse of the injectivity radius. We show the existence on such a manifold of a distance-like function with bounded gradient and mild growth of the Hessian. As a main application, we prove that smooth compactly supported functions are dense in $W^{2,p}$. The result is improved for $p=2$ avoiding both the upper bound on the Ricci tensor, and the injectivity radius assumption. As further applications we prove new disturbed Sobolev and Calderón-Zygmund inequalities on manifolds with possibly unbounded curvature and highlight consequences about the validity of the full Omori-Yau maximum principle for the Hessian.

Extremals of Log Sobolev inequality on non-compact manifolds and Ricci soliton structures

In this paper we establish the existence of extremals for the Log Sobolev functional on complete non-compact manifolds with Ricci curvature bounded from below and strictly positive injectivity radius, under a condition near infinity. When Ricci curvature is also bounded from above we get exponential decay at infinity of the extremals. As a consequence of these analytical results we establish, under the same assumptions, that non-trivial shrinking Ricci solitons support a gradient Ricci soliton structure. On the way, we prove two results of independent interest: the existence of a distance-like function with uniformly controlled gradient and Hessian on complete non-compact manifolds with bounded Ricci curvature and strictly positive injectivity radius and a general growth estimate for the norm of the soliton vector field on manifolds with bounded Ricci curvature.

Boundary structure of convex sets in the hyperbolic space

We prove some results concerning the boundary of a convex set in $\H^n$. This includes the convergence of curvature measures under Hausdorff convergence of the sets, the study of normal points, and, for convex surfaces, a generalized Gauss equation and some natural characterizations of the regular part of the Gaussian curvature measure.

Quantitative regularity for p-harmonic maps

In this article, we study the regularity of minimizing and stationary $p$-harmonic maps between Riemannian manifolds. The aim is obtaining Minkowski-type volume estimates on the singular set $S(f)=\{x \ \ s.t. \ \ f \text{ is not continuous at } x\}$, as opposed to the weaker and non quantitative Hausdorff dimension bounds currently available in literature for generic $p$. The main technique used in this paper is the quantitative stratification, which is based on the study of the approximate symmetries of the tangent maps of $f$. In this article, we generalize the study carried out in \cite{ChNa2} for minimizing $2$-harmonic maps to generic $p\in (1,\infty)$. Moreover, we analyze also the stationary case where the lack of compactness makes the study more complicated. In order to understand the degeneracy intrinsic in the behaviour of stationary maps, we study the defect measure naturally associated to a sequence of such maps and generalize the results obtained in \cite{lin_stat}. By using refined covering arguments, we also improve the estimates in the case of isolated singularities and obtain a definite bound on the number of singular points. This result seems to be new even for minimizing $2$-harmonic maps.

The smooth Riemannian extension problem: completeness

By means of a general gluing and conformal-deformation construction, we prove that any smooth, metrically complete Riemannian manifold with smooth boundary can be realized as a closed domain into a smooth, geodesically complete Riemannan manifold without boundary. Applications to Sobolev spaces, Nash embedding and local extensions with strict curvature bounds are presented.

The smooth Riemannian extension problem

Given a metrically complete Riemannian manifold $(M,g)$ with smooth nonempty boundary and assuming that one of its curvatures is subject to a certain bound, we address the problem of whether it is possibile to realize $(M,g)$ as a domain inside a geodesically complete Riemannian manifold $(M',g')$ without boundary, by preserving the same curvature bounds. In this direction we provide three kind of results: (1) a general existence theorem showing that it is always possible to obtain a geodesically complete Riemannian extension without curvature constraints; (2) various topological obstructions to the existence of a complete Riemannian extension with prescribed sectional and Ricci curvature bounds; (3) some existence results of complete Riemannian extensions with sectional and Ricci curvature bounds, mostly in the presence of a convexity condition on the boundary.

Hyperbolization of cusps with convex boundary

We prove that for every metric on the torus with curvature bounded from below by -1 in the sense of Alexandrov there exists a hyperbolic cusp with convex boundary such that the induced metric on the boundary is the given metric. The proof is by polyhedral approximation. This was the last open case of a general theorem: every metric with curvature bounded from below on a compact surface is isometric to a convex surface in a 3-dimensional space form.

On the homotopy Dirichlet problem for p-harmonic maps

In this two papers we deal with the relative homotopy Dirichlet problem for p-harmonic maps from compact manifolds with boundary to manifolds of non-positive sectional curvature. Notably, we give a complete solution to the problem in case the target manifold is either compact and a new proof in case it is rotationally symmetric or two dimensional and simply connected. The proof of the compact case uses some ideas of White to define the relative d-homotopy type of Sobolev maps, and the regularity theory by Hardt and Lin. To deal with non-compact targets we introduce a periodization procedure which permits to reduce the problem to the previous one. Also, a general uniqueness result is given.

Sobolev spaces of maps and the Dirichlet problem for harmonic maps

In this paper we prove the existence of a solution to the Dirichlet problem for harmonic maps into a geodesic ball on which the squared distance function from the origin is strictly convex. This improves a celebrated theorem obtained by S. Hildebrandt, H. Kaul and K. Widman in 1977. In particular no curvature assumptions on the target are required. Our proof relies on a careful analysis of the Sobolev spaces of maps involved in the variational process, and on a deformation result which permits to glue a suitable Euclidean end to the geodesic ball.

Lorentzian area measures and the Christoffel problem

We introduce a particular class of unbounded closed convex sets of $\R^{d+1}$, called F-convex sets (F stands for future). To define them, we use the Minkowski bilinear form of signature $(+,...,+,-)$ instead of the usual scalar product, and we ask the Gauss map to be a surjection onto the hyperbolic space $\H^d$. Important examples are embeddings of the universal cover of so-called globally hyperbolic maximal flat Lorentzian manifolds. Basic tools are first derived, similarly to the classical study of convex bodies. For example, F-convex sets are determined by their support function, which is defined on $\H^d$. Then the area measures of order $i$, $0\leq i\leq d$ are defined. As in the convex bodies case, they are the coefficients of the polynomial in $ε$ which is the volume of an $ε$ approximation of the convex set. Here the area measures are defined with respect to the Lorentzian structure. Then we focus on the area measure of order one. Finding necessary and sufficient conditions for a measure (here on $\H^d$) to be the first area measure of a F-convex set is the Christoffel Problem. We derive many results about this problem. If we restrict to "Fuchsian" F-convex set (those who are invariant under linear isometries acting cocompactly on $\H^d$), then the problem is totally solved, analogously to the case of convex bodies. In this case the measure can be given on a compact hyperbolic manifold. Particular attention is given on the smooth and polyhedral cases. In those cases, the Christoffel problem is equivalent to prescribing the mean radius of curvature and the edge lengths respectively.

Topology of steady and expanding gradient Ricci solitons via f-harmonic maps

In this paper we give some results on the topology of manifolds with $\infty$-Bakry-Émery Ricci tensor bounded below, and in particular of steady and expanding gradient Ricci solitons. To this aim we clarify and further develop the theory of f-harmonic maps from non-compact manifolds into non-positively curved manifolds. Notably, we prove existence and vanishing results which generalize to the weighted setting part of Schoen and Yau's theory of harmonic maps.

Remarks on $L^{p}$-vanishing results in geometric analysis

We survey some $L^{p}$-vanishing results for solutions of Bochner or Simons type equations with refined Kato inequalities, under spectral assumptions on the relevant Schrödinger operators. New aspects are included in the picture. In particular, an abstract version of a structure theorem for stable minimal hypersurfaces of finite total curvature is observed. Further geometric applications are discussed.

On p-harmonic maps and convex functions

We prove that, in general, given a $p$-harmonic map $F:M\to N$ and a convex function $H:N\to\mathbb{R}$, the composition $H\circ F$ is not $p$-subharmonic. By assuming some rotational symmetry on manifolds and functions, we reduce the problem to an ordinary differential inequality. The key of the proof is an asymptotic estimate for the $p$-harmonic map under suitable assumptions on the manifolds.

Stokes' theorem, volume growth and parabolicity

We present some new Stokes' type theorems on complete non-compact manifolds that extend, in different directions, previous work by Gaffney and Karp and also the so called Kelvin-Nevanlinna-Royden criterion for (p-)parabolicity. Applications to comparison and uniqueness results involving the p-Laplacian are deduced.

A general comparison theorem for $p$-harmonic maps in homotopy class

We prove a general comparison result for homotopic finite $p$-energy $C^{1}$ $p$-harmonic maps $u,v:M\to N$ between Riemannian manifolds, assuming that $M$ is $p$-parabolic and $N$ is complete and non-positively curved. In particular, we construct a homotopy through constant $p$-energy maps, which turn out to be $p$-harmonic when $N$ is compact. Moreover, we obtain uniqueness in the case of negatively curved $N$. This generalizes a well known result in the harmonic setting due to R. Schoen and S.T. Yau.

An alternative proof of a rigidity theorem for the sharp Sobolev constant

We provide a somewhat geometric proof of a rigidity theorem by M. Ledoux and C. Xia concerning complete manifolds with non-negative Ricci curvature supporting an Euclidean-type Sobolev inequality with (almost) best Sobolev constant. Using the same technique we also generalize Ledoux-Xia result to complete manifolds with asymptotically non-negative curvature.
