Entanglement and extreme planar spin squeezing

We introduce an entanglement-depth criterion optimized for planar quantum squeezed (PQS) states. It is connected with the sensitivity of such states for estimating an arbitrary, not necessarily small phase. We compare numerically our criterion with the well-known extreme spin squeezing condition of S{\o}rensen and M{\o}lmer [Phys. Rev. Lett. 86, 4431 (2001)] and show that our condition detects a higher depth of entanglement when both planar spin variances are squeezed below the standard quantum limit. We employ our theory to monitor the entanglement dynamics in a PQS state produced via quantum non-demolition (QND) measurements using data from a recent experiment [Phys. Rev. Lett. 118, 233603 (2017)].

Simultaneous tracking of spin angle and amplitude beyond classical limits

We show how simultaneous, back-action evading tracking of non-commuting observables can be achieved in a widely-used sensing technology, atomic interferometry. Using high-dynamic-range dynamically-decoupled quantum non-demolition (QND) measurements on a precessing atomic spin ensemble, we track the collective spin angle and amplitude with negligible effects from back action, giving steady-state tracking sensitivity 2.9 dB beyond the standard quantum limit and 7.0 dB beyond Poisson statistics.

Quantum non-demolition measurement enables macroscopic Leggett-Garg tests

We show how a test of macroscopic realism based on Leggett-Garg inequalities (LGIs) can be performed in a macroscopic system. Using a continuous-variable approach, we consider quantum non-demolition (QND) measurements applied to atomic ensembles undergoing magnetically-driven coherent oscillation. We identify measurement schemes requiring only Gaussian states as inputs and giving a significant LGI violation with realistic experimental parameters and imperfections. The predicted violation is shown to be due to true quantum effects rather than to a classical invasivity of the measurement. Using QND measurements to tighten the "clumsiness loophole" forces the stubborn macrorealist to re-create quantum back action in his or her account of measurement.

Quantum atom-light interfaces in the gaussian description for spin-1 systems

We extend the covariance-matrix description of atom--light quantum interfaces, originally developed for real and effective spin-1/2 atoms, to include "spin alignment" degrees of freedom. This allows accurate modeling of optically-probed spin-1 ensembles in arbitrary magnetic fields. We also include technical noise terms that are very common in experimental situations. These include magnetic field noise, variable atom number and the effect of magnetic field inhomogeneities. We demonstrate the validity of our extended model by comparing numerical simulations to a free--induction decay (FID) measurement of polarized $^{87}$Rb atoms in the $f = 1$ ground state. We qualitatively and quantitatively reproduce experimental results with all free parameters of the simulations fixed. The model can be easily extended to larger spin systems, and adapted to more complicated experimental situations.

Real-time vector field tracking with a cold-atom magnetometer

We demonstrate a fast three-axis optical magnetometer using cold, optically-trapped $^{87}$Rb gas as a sensor. By near-resonant Faraday rotation we record the free-induction decay following optical pumping along two orthogonal axes to obtain the three field components and one gradient component. A single measurement achieves shot-noise limited sub-nT sensitivity in 1 ms, with transverse spatial resolution of $\sim$ 20 $μ$m. We make a detailed analysis of the shot-noise-limited sensitivity.

Planar squeezing by quantum non-demolition measurement in cold atomic ensembles

Planar squeezed states, i.e. quantum states which are squeezed in two orthogonal spin components, have recently attracted attention due to their applications in atomic interferometry and quantum information [Q. Y. He et al, New J. Phys. 14, 093012 (2012)]. While canonical variables such as quadratures of the radiation field can be squeezed in at most one component, simultaneous squeezing in two orthogonal spin components can be achieved due to the angular momentum commutation relations. We present a novel scheme for planar squeezing via quantum non-demolition (QND) measurements in spin-1 systems. The QND measurement is achieved via near-resonant paramagnetic Faraday rotation probing, and the planar squeezing is obtained by sequential QND measurement of two orthogonal spin components. We compute the achievable squeezing for a variety of optical depths, initial conditions, and probing strategies. The planar squeezed states generated in this way contain entanglement detectable by spin-squeezing inequalities and give an advantage relative to non-squeezed states for any precession phase angle, a benefit for single-shot and high-bandwidth magnetometry.
