One example of general unidentifiable tensors

The identifiability of parameters in a probabilistic model is a crucial notion in statistical inference. We prove that a general tensor of rank 8 in C^3\otimes C^6\otimes C^6 has at least 6 decompositions as sum of simple tensors, so it is not 8-identifiable. This is the highest known example of balanced tensors of dimension 3, which are not k-identifiable, when k is smaller than the generic rank.

Introduction to the hyperdeterminant and to the rank of multidimensional matrices

This is an introduction to the hyperderminant, according to Gelfand, Kapranov and Zelevinsky. The "triangle inequality", characterizing the Segre varieties such that their dual variety is a hypersurface, is proved in a geometric way (Theorems 3.3 and 6.2). Significant emphasis is given to boundary format case, to pencil of quadrics and to the rank of multidimensional matrices. In the last section we propose three open problems.

Eigenvectors of tensors and algorithms for Waring decomposition

A Waring decomposition of a (homogeneous) polynomial f is a minimal sum of powers of linear forms expressing f. Under certain conditions, such a decomposition is unique. We discuss some algorithms to compute the Waring decomposition, which are linked to the equation of certain secant varieties and to eigenvectors of tensors. In particular we explicitly decompose a general cubic polynomial in three variables as the sum of five cubes (Sylvester Pentahedral Theorem).

Matrices with Eigenvectors in a Given Subspace

The Kalman variety of a linear subspace in a vector space consists of all endomorphism that possess an eigenvector in that subspace. We study the defining polynomials and basic geometric invariants of the Kalman variety.

A computational approach to Lüroth quartics

A plane quartic curve is called Lüroth if it contains the ten vertices of a complete pentalateral. White and Miller constructed in 1909 a covariant quartic 4-fold, associated to any plane quartic. We review their construction and we show how it gives a computational tool to detect if a plane quartic is Lüroth. As a byproduct, the 28 bitangents of a general plane quartic correspond to 28 singular points of the associated White-Miller quartic 4-fold.

On the Waring problem for polynomial rings

In this note we discuss an analog of the classical Waring problem for C[x_0, x_1,...,x_n]. Namely, we show that a general homogeneous polynomial p \in C[x_0,x_1,...,x_n] of degree divisible by k\ge 2 can be represented as a sum of at most k^n k-th powers of homogeneous polynomials in C[x_0, x_1,...,x_n]. Noticeably, k^n coincides with the number obtained by naive dimension count.

Equations for secant varieties to Veronese varieties

We define new classes of modules of equations for secant varieties of Veronese varieties using representation theory and geometry. We also revisit some old modules of equations (catalecticant minors) to determine when they are sufficient to give scheme-theoretic defining equations.

Equations for secant varieties of Veronese and other varieties

New classes of modules of equations for secant varieties of Veronese varieties are defined using representation theory and geometry. Some old modules of equations (catalecticant minors) are revisited to determine when they are sufficient to give scheme-theoretic defining equations. An algorithm to decompose a general ternary quintic as the sum of seven fifth powers is given as an illustration of our methods. Our new equations and results about them are put into a larger context by introducing vector bundle techniques for finding equations of secant varieties in general. We include a few homogeneous examples of this method.

Laplace Equations and the Weak Lefschetz Property

We prove that r independent homogeneous polynomials of the same degree d become dependent when restricted to any hyperplane if and only if their inverse system parameterizes a variety whose (d-1)-osculating spaces have dimension smaller than expected. This gives an equivalence between an algebraic notion (called Weak Lefschetz Property) and a differential geometric notion, concerning varieties which satisfy certain Laplace equations. In the toric case, some relevant examples are classified and as byproduct we provide counterexamples to Ilardi's conjecture.

On generic identifiability of 3-tensors of small rank

We introduce an inductive method for the study of the uniqueness of decompositions of tensors, by means of tensors of rank 1. The method is based on the geometric notion of weak defectivity. For three-dimensional tensors of type (a, b, c), a\le b\le c, our method proves that the decomposition is unique (i.e. k-identifiability holds) for general tensors of rank k, as soon as k\le (a+1)(b+1)/16. This improves considerably the known range for identifiability. The method applies also to tensor of higher dimension. For tensors of small size, we give a complete list of situations where identifiability does not hold. Among them, there are 4\times4\times4 tensors of rank 6, an interesting case because of its connection with the study of DNA strings.

On singular Luroth quartics

Plane quartics containing the ten vertices of a complete pentalateral and limits of them are called Lüroth quartics. The locus of singular Lüroth quartics has two irreducible components, both of codimension two in $¶^{14}$. We compute the degree of them and we discuss the consequences of this computation on the explicit form of the Lüroth invariant. One important tool are the Cremona hexahedral equations of the cubic surface. We also compute the class in $\overline{M}_3$ of the closure of the locus of nonsingular Lüroth quartics.

On the hypersurface of Luroth quartics

The hypersurface of Luroth quartic curves inside the projective space of plane quartics has degree 54. We give a proof of this fact along the lines outlined in a paper by Morley, published in 1919. Another proof has been given by Le Potier and Tikhomirov in 2001, in the setting of moduli spaces of vector bundles on the projective plane. Morley's proof uses the description of plane quartics as branch curves of Geiser involutions and gives new geometrical interpretations of the 36 planes associated to the Cremona hexahedral representations of a nonsingular cubic surface.

On the typical rank of real binary forms

We determine the rank of a general real binary form of degree d=4 and d=5. In the case d=5, the possible values of the rank of such general forms are 3,4,5. The existence of three typical ranks was unexpected. We prove that a real binary form of degree d with d real roots has rank d.

Non-Defectivity of Grassmannians of planes

Let $Gr(k,n)$ be the Plücker embedding of the Grassmann variety of projective $k$-planes in $¶n$. For a projective variety $X$, let $σ_s(X)$ denote the variety of its $s-1$ secant planes. More precisely, $σ_s(X)$ denotes the Zariski closure of the union of linear spans of $s$-tuples of points lying on $X$. We exhibit two functions $s_0(n)\le s_1(n)$ such that $σ_s(Gr(2,n))$ has the expected dimension whenever $n\geq 9$ and either $s\le s_0(n)$ or $s_1(n)\le s$. Both $s_0(n)$ and $s_1(n)$ are asymptotic to $\frac{n^2}{18}$. This yields, asymptotically, the typical rank of an element of $\wedge^{3} 1pt {\mathbb C}^{n+1}$. Finally, we classify all defective $σ_s(Gr(k,n))$ for $s\le 6$ and provide geometric arguments underlying each defective case.

On partial polynomial interpolation

The Alexander-Hirschowitz theorem says that a general collection of $k$ double points in ${\bf P}^n$ imposes independent conditions on homogeneous polynomials of degree $d$ with a well known list of exceptions. We generalize this theorem to arbitrary zero-dimensional schemes contained in a general union of double points. We work in the polynomial interpolation setting. In this framework our main result says that the affine space of polynomials of degree $\le d$ in $n$ variables, with assigned values of any number of general linear combinations of first partial derivatives, has the expected dimension if $d\neq 2$ with only five exceptional cases. If $d=2$ the exceptional cases are fully described.

An invariant regarding Waring's problem for cubic polynomials

We compute the equation of the 7-secant variety to the Veronese variety (P^4,O(3)), its degree is 15. This is the last missing invariant in the Alexander-Hirschowitz classification. It gives the condition to express a homogeneous cubic polynomial in 5 variables as the sum of 7 cubes (Waring problem). The interesting side in the construction is that it comes from the determinant of a matrix of order 45 with linear entries, which is a cube. The same technique allows to express the classical Aronhold invariantof plane cubics as a pfaffian.

On the Alexander-Hirschowitz Theorem

The Alexander-Hirschowitz theorem says that a general collection of $k$ double points in ${\bf P}^n$ imposes independent conditions on homogeneous polynomials of degree $d$ with a well known list of exceptions. Alexander and Hirschowitz completed its proof in 1995, solving a long standing classical problem, connected with the Waring problem for polynomials. We expose a self-contained proof based mainly on previous works by Terracini, Hirschowitz, Alexander and Chandler, with a few simplifications. We claim originality only in the case $d=3$, where our proof is shorter. We end with an account of the history of the work on this problem.

Symplectic bundles on the plane, secant varieties and Lüroth quartics revisited

Let $X={\bf P}^2\times{\bf P}^{n-1}$ embedded with $Ø(1,2)$. We prove that its $(n+1)$-secant variety $σ_{n+1}(X)$ is a hypersurface, while it is expected that it fills the ambient space. The equation of $σ_{n+1}(X)$ is the symmetric analog of the Strassen equation. When $n=4$ the determinantal map takes $σ_5(X)$ to the hypersurface of Lüroth quartics, which is the image of the Barth map studied by LePotier and Tikhomirov. This hint allows to obtain some results on the jumping lines and the Brill-Noether loci of symplectic bundles on ${\bf P}^2$ by using the higher secant varieties of $X$.
