Robust data-driven model-reference control of linear perturbed systems via sliding mode generation

This paper introduces a data-based integral sliding mode control scheme for robustification of model-reference controllers, accommodating generic multivariable linear systems with unknown dynamics and affected by matched disturbances. Specifically, an integral sliding mode control (ISMC) law is recast into a data-based framework relying on an integral sliding variable depending only on the reference model, without the need of modeling the plant. The main strength of the proposed approach is the enforcement of the desired reference model in closed-loop under sliding mode conditions, despite the lack of knowledge of the model dynamics and the presence of the matched disturbances. Moreover, the conditions required to guarantee an integral sliding mode generation and the closed-loop stability are formally analyzed in the paper, remarking the generality of the proposed data-driven integral sliding mode control (DD-ISMC) with respect to the related model-based counterpart. Finally, the main practices for the data-based design of the proposed control scheme are deeply discussed in the paper, and the proposed method is tested in simulation on a benchmark example, and experimentally on a real laboratory setup. Simulation and experimental evidence fully corroborates the theoretical analysis, thus motivating further research in this direction.

Battery model impact on time-optimal co-design for electric racing cars: review and application

The sustainable mobility trend touches the racing world as well, from the hybridization of Formula 1 (F1) and Le Mans Hypercars to the fully electric Formula E racing class. In this scenario, the research community is studying how to push electric racing vehicles to their limit, combining vehicle dynamics and energy management, to successfully solve the minimum lap time problem. Recently, this class of problems has been enlarged towards optimal sizing, with a particular interest in batteries, which represent the main bottleneck for electric vehicle performance. In this work, starting from a thorough review of literature approaches, we define a general optimization framework of minimum lap and race time problems for electric vehicles, suitable to figure out the impact of different modeling choices on both problem structure and optimal variables profiles. Exploiting a case study on Generation 3 (Gen 3) of Formula E cars, we delve into the impact of battery models' complexity on both optimal sizing and optimal battery usage. We show how highly detailed models are necessary to study the evolution of both battery and vehicle control variables during the race, while, simple models are more than sufficient to address the battery sizing problem.

Twin-in-the-loop state estimation for vehicle dynamics control: theory and experiments

In vehicle dynamics control, many variables of interest cannot be directly measured, as sensors might be costly, fragile, or even not available. Therefore, real-time estimation techniques need to be used. The previous approach suffers from two main drawbacks: (i) the approximations due to model mismatch might jeopardize the performance of the final estimation-based control; (ii) each new estimator requires the calibration from scratch of a dedicated model. In this paper, we propose a twin-in-the-loop scheme, where the ad-hoc model is replaced by an accurate multibody simulator of the vehicle, typically available to vehicles manufacturers and suitable for the estimation of any onboard variable, coupled with a compensator within a closed-loop observer scheme. Given the black-box nature of the digital twin, a data-driven methodology for observer tuning is developed, based on Bayesian optimization. The effectiveness of the proposed estimation method for the estimation of vehicle states and forces, as compared to traditional model-based Kalman filtering, is experimentally shown on a dataset collected with a sports car.
