Higher Vector Bundles

We introduce higher analogs for cleavages in the context of (Kan) simplicial fibrations. We apply them to obtain geometric models for representations up to homotopy of (higher) Lie groupoids. Concretely, we set an equivalence between representations up to homotopy and simplicial vector bundles endowed with a cleavage. Our result is an incarnation of the Higher Grothendieck Correspondence, it can be seen as a relative Dold-Kan Theorem and extends earlier work of Gracia-Saz and Mehta on VB-groupoids.

Almost Representations of Groupoids on Banach Bundles

We extend an old result of de la Harpe and Karoubi, concerning almost representations of compact groups, to proper groupoids admitting continuous Haar measure systems. As an application, we establish the existence of sufficiently many continuous representations of such groupoids on finite-rank Hilbert bundles locally, and use this fact to prove a new generalization of the classical Tannaka duality theorem to groupoids in a purely topological setting.

The Adjoint Representation of a Higher Lie Groupoid

We extend the standard construction of the adjoint representation of a Lie groupoid to the case of an arbitrary higher Lie groupoid. As for a Lie groupoid, the adjoint representation of a higher Lie groupoid turns out to be a representation up to homotopy which is well defined up to isomorphism. Its existence and uniqueness are immediate consequences of a more general result in the theory of simplicial vector bundles: the representation up to homotopy obtained by splitting a higher vector bundle by means of a cleavage is, to within isomorphism, independent of the choice of the cleavage.

Proper Cartan Groupoids: Reduction to the Regular Case

We discuss a method for constructing multiplicative connections on proper Lie groupoids or, more exactly, for reducing the task of constructing such connections to a number of in principle simpler tasks involving only Lie groupoids that are both proper and regular.

A fast convergence theorem for nearly multiplicative connections on proper Lie groupoids

Motivated by the study of a certain family of classical geometric problems we investigate the existence of multiplicative connections on proper Lie groupoids. We show that one can always deform a given connection which is only approximately multiplicative into a genuinely multiplicative connection. The proof of this fact that we present here relies on a recursive averaging technique. As an application we point out that the study of multiplicative connections on general proper Lie groupoids reduces to the study of longitudinal representations of regular groupoids. We regard our results as a preliminary step towards the elaboration of an obstruction theory for multiplicative connections.

Regular Cartan groupoids and longitudinal representations

With the intent of laying the groundwork for a program that aims at explicitly describing the space of Cartan (i.e. multiplicative) connections on a general proper Lie groupoid, we begin to investigate the space of such connections in the regular case. We point out that there is a close relationship between Cartan connections on a proper regular groupoid and representations of the groupoid on its own longitudinal bundle (i.e. on the vector distribution tangent to its orbits). This observation enables us to reduce the original problem to a simpler one. We carry out a prospective study of the latter problem, and apply the resulting analysis to produce a number of examples in rank two which serve to illustrate the diversity of the possible obstructions to the existence of multiplicative connections.

Some remarks on representations up to homotopy

Motivated by the study of the interrelation between functorial and algebraic quantum field theory, we point out that on any locally trivial bundle of compact groups, representations up to homotopy are enough to separate points by means of the associated representations in cohomol- ogy. Furthermore, we observe that the derived representation category of any compact group is equivalent to the category of ordinary (finite- dimensional) representations of the group.

Reduced smooth stacks?

An arbitrary Lie groupoid gives rise to a groupoid of germs of local diffeomorphisms over its base manifold, known as its effect. The effect of any bundle of Lie groups is trivial. All quotients of a given Lie groupoid determine the same effect. It is natural to regard the effects of any two Morita equivalent Lie groupoids as being equivalent. In this paper we shall describe a systematic way of comparing the effects of different Lie groupoids. In particular, we shall rigorously define what it means for two arbitrary Lie groupoids to give rise to equivalent effects. For effective orbifold groupoids, the new notion of equivalence turns out to coincide with the traditional notion of Morita equivalence. Our analysis is relevant to the presentation theory of proper smooth stacks.

Strictification of etale stacky Lie groups

We define stacky Lie groups to be group objects in the 2-category of differentiable stacks. We show that every connected and etale stacky Lie group is equivalent to a crossed module of the form (H,G) where H is the fundamental group of the given stacky Lie group and G is the connected and simply connected Lie group integrating the Lie algebra of the stacky group. Our result is closely related to a strictification result of Baez and Lauda.

A note on the global structure of proper Lie groupoids in low codimensions

We observe that any connected proper Lie groupoid whose orbits have codimension at most two admits a globally effective representation on a smooth vector bundle, i.e., one whose kernel consists only of ineffective arrows. As an application, we deduce that any such groupoid can up to Morita equivalence be presented as an extension of some action groupoid G n X with G compact by some bundle of compact Lie groups.

On the role of effective representations of Lie groupoids

In this paper, we undertake the study of the Tannaka duality construction for the ordinary representations of a proper Lie groupoid on vector bundles. We show that for each proper Lie groupoid G, the canonical homomorphism of G into the reconstructed groupoid T(G) is surjective, although, contrary to what happens in the case of groups, it may fail to be an isomorphism. We obtain necessary and sufficient conditions in order that G may be isomorphic to T(G) and, more generally, in order that T(G) may be a Lie groupoid. We show that if T(G) is a Lie groupoid, the canonical homomorphism from G into T(G) is a submersion and the two groupoids have isomorphic categories of representations.

A Tannaka Theorem for Proper Lie Groupoids

By replacing the category of smooth vector bundles over a manifold with the category of what we call smooth Euclidean fields, which is a proper enlargement of the former, and by considering smooth actions of Lie groupoids on smooth Euclidean fields, we are able to prove a Tannaka duality theorem for proper Lie groupoids. The notion of smooth Euclidean field we introduce here is the smooth, finite dimensional analogue of the usual notion of continuous Hilbert field.

Tannaka duality for proper Lie groupoids

The main contribution of this thesis is a Tannaka duality theorem for proper Lie groupoids. This result is obtained by replacing the category of smooth vector bundles over the base manifold of a Lie groupoid with a larger category, the category of smooth Euclidean fields, and by considering smooth actions of Lie groupoids on smooth Euclidean fields. The notion of smooth Euclidean field that is introduced here is the smooth, finite dimensional analogue of the familiar notion of continuous Hilbert field. In the second part of the thesis, ordinary smooth representations of Lie groupoids on smooth vector bundles are systematically studied from the point of view of Tannaka duality, and various results are obtained in this direction.
