Clock spacing for two-sided Jacobi matrices

We study local eigenvalue spacing for finite truncations of a two-sided Jacobi matrix with two movable endpoints. In particular, we show that a suitable analog of clock spacing follows from a pointwise reflectionlessness condition. We obtain this as a consequence of a new scaling limit for Christoffel--Darboux kernels with a movable starting point. Without reflectionlessness, we obtain a new class of limit kernels, which combine distinct contributions from $\pm\infty$. We also show that clock spacing in the two-sided setting is a fragile phenomenon, which can be destroyed by the change of a single Jacobi coefficient; in particular, it is not merely a consequence of absolutely continuous spectrum.

Wave operators for Jacobi matrices

We study the wave operators for a Jacobi matrix whose spectral measure satisfies the Szeg\"o condition. We prove existence and completeness of wave operators under a mild additional assumption on the Verblunsky coefficients of the associated measure on the unit circle.

Directional Ballistic Transport in Quantum Waveguides

We study the transport properties of Schr\"odinger operators on $\mathbb{R}^d$ with potentials that are periodic in some directions and compactly supported in the others. Such systems are known to produce surface states that are weakly confined near the support of the potential. We show that a natural set of surface states exhibits directional ballistic transport, characterized by ballistic transport in the periodic directions and its absence in the others. To prove this, we develop a Floquet theory that captures the analytic variation of surface states. The main idea consists of reformulating the eigenvalue problem for surface states as a Fredholm problem via the Dirichlet-to-Neumann map.

Optimal dispersion for discrete periodic Schr\"odinger operators

We prove a dispersive estimate for periodic discrete Schr\"odinger operators on the line with optimal rate of decay. Additionally, by standard methods, we deduce dispersive estimates for the discrete nonlinear Schr\"odinger equation with small initial data and suitable nonlinearity when the underlying Hamiltonian is periodic.

Rigorous Methods for Bohr-Sommerfeld Quantization Rules

In this work, we prove Bohr-Sommerfeld quantization rules for the self-adjoint Zakharov-Shabat system and the Schr\"odinger equation in the presence of two simple turning points bounding a classically allowed region. In particular, we use the method of comparison equations for $2\times 2$ traceless first-order systems to provide a unified perspective that yields similar proofs in each setting. The use of a Weber model system gives results that are uniform in the eigenvalue parameter over the whole range from the bottom of the potential well up to finite values.

A Weyl Matrix Perspective on Unbounded Non-Self-Adjoint Jacobi Matrices

A new way of encoding a non-self-adjoint Jacobi matrix $J$ by a spectral measure of $|J|$ together with a phase function was described by Pushnitski--\v Stampach in the bounded case. We present another perspective on this correspondence, based on Weyl functions instead of moments, which simplifies some proofs and generalizes the correspondence to the unbounded case. In particular, we find a bijection between proper Jacobi matrices with positive off-diagonal elements, and a class of spectral data. We prove that this mapping is continuous in a suitable sense. To prove injectivity of the map, we prove a local Borg--Marchenko theorem for unbounded non-self-adjoint Jacobi matrices in this class that may be of independent interest.

What is Ballistic Transport?

In this article, we review some notions of ballistic transport from the mathematics and physics literature, describe their basic interrelations, and contrast them with other commonly studied notions of wave packet spread.

Directional Ballistic Transport for Partially Periodic Schr\"odinger Operators on $\mathbb{Z}^2$

We study the transport properties of Schr\"{o}dinger operators on $\mathbb{Z}^2$ with potentials that are periodic in one direction and compactly supported in the other. Such systems are known to produce surface states that are weakly confined near the support of the potential. We demonstrate that surface states exhibit what we describe as directional ballistic transport, characterized by a strong form of ballistic transport along the periodic direction and its absence in the compactly supported one. By showing that the scattering states exhibit ballistic transport, we obtain ballistic transport for a dense subset of all of $\ell^2(\mathbb {Z} ^2)$.

Ballistic transport for limit-periodic Schrödinger operators in one dimension

In this paper, we consider the transport properties of the class of limit-periodic continuum Schrödinger operators whose potentials are approximated exponentially quickly by a sequence of periodic functions. For such an operator $H$, and $X_H(t)$ the Heisenberg evolution of the position operator, we show the limit of $\frac{1}{t}X_H(t)ψ$ as $t\to\infty$ exists and is nonzero for $ψ\ne 0$ belonging to a dense subspace of initial states which are sufficiently regular and of suitably rapid decay. This is viewed as a particularly strong form of ballistic transport, and this is the first time it has been proven in a continuum almost periodic non-periodic setting. In particular, this statement implies that for the initial states considered, the second moment grows quadratically in time.

Orthogonal rational functions with real poles, root asymptotics, and GMP matrices

There is a vast theory of the asymptotic behavior of orthogonal polynomials with respect to a measure on $\mathbb{R}$ and its applications to Jacobi matrices. That theory has an obvious affine invariance and a very special role for $\infty$. We extend aspects of this theory in the setting of rational functions with poles on $\overline{\mathbb{R}} = \mathbb{R} \cup \{\infty\}$, obtaining a formulation which allows multiple poles and proving an invariance with respect to $\overline{\mathbb{R}}$-preserving Möbius transformations. We obtain a characterization of Stahl--Totik regularity of a GMP matrix in terms of its matrix elements; as an application, we give a proof of a conjecture of Simon -- a Cesàro--Nevai property of regular Jacobi matrices on finite gap sets.

Asymptotics of Chebyshev rational functions with respect to subsets of the real line

There is a vast theory of Chebyshev and residual polynomials and their asymptotic behavior. The former ones maximize the leading coefficient and the latter ones maximize the point evaluation with respect to an $L^\infty$ norm. We study Chebyshev and residual extremal problems for rational functions with real poles with respect to subsets of $\overline{\mathbb{R}}$. We prove root asymptotics under fairly general assumptions on the sequence of poles. Moreover, we prove Szegő--Widom asymptotics for sets which are regular for the Dirichlet problem and obey the Parreau--Widom and DCT conditions.

Uniqueness of solutions of the KdV-hierarchy via Dubrovin-type flows

We consider the Cauchy problem for the KdV hierarchy -- a family of integrable PDEs with a Lax pair representation involving one-dimensional Schrödinger operators -- under a local in time boundedness assumption on the solution. For reflectionless initial data, we prove that the solution stays reflectionless. For almost periodic initial data with absolutely continuous spectrum, we prove that under Craig-type conditions on the spectrum, Dirichlet data evolve according to a Lipschitz Dubrovin-type flow, so the solution is uniquely recovered by a trace formula. This applies to algebro-geometric (finite gap) solutions; more notably, we prove that it applies to small quasiperiodic initial data with analytic sampling functions and Diophantine frequency. This also gives a uniqueness result for the Cauchy problem on the line for periodic initial data, even in the absence of Craig-type conditions.
