A Second Wave of Expanders over Finite Fields

This is an expository survey on recent sum-product results in finite fields. We present a number of sum-product or "expander" results that say that if $|A| > p^{2/3}$ then some set determined by sums and product of elements of $A$ is nearly as large as possible, and if $|A|<p^{2/3}$ then the set in question is significantly larger that $A$. These results are based on a point-plane incidence bound of Rudnev, and are quantitatively stronger than a wave of earlier results following Bourgain, Katz, and Tao's breakthrough sum-product result. In addition, we present two geometric results: an incidence bound due to Stevens and de Zeeuw, and bound on collinear triples, and an example of an expander that breaks the threshold of $p^{2/3}$ required by the other results. We have simplified proofs wherever possible, and hope that this survey may serve as a compact guide to recent advances in arithmetic combinatorics over finite fields. We do not claim originality for any of the results.

A point-line incidence identity in finite fields, and applications

Let $E \subseteq \mathbb{F}_q^2$ be a set in the 2-dimensional vector space over a finite field with $q$ elements. We prove an identity for the second moment of its incidence function and deduce a variety of existing results from the literature, not all naturally associated with lines in $\mathbb{F}_q^2$, in a unified and elementary way.

Products of Differences in Prime Order Finite Fields

There exists an absolute constant $C$ with the following property. Let $A \subseteq \mathbb{F}_p$ be a set in the prime order finite field with $p$ elements. Suppose that $|A| > C p^{5/8}$. The set \[ (A \pm A)(A \pm A) = \{(a_1 \pm a_2)(a_3 \pm a_4) : a_1,a_2,a_3,a_4 \in A\} \] contains at least $p/2$ elements.

Upper Bounds on the Cardinality of Higher Sumsets

Let A and B be finite sets in a commutative group. We bound |A+hB| in terms of |A|, |A+B| and h. We provide a submultiplicative upper bound that improves on the existing bound of Imre Ruzsa by inserting a factor that decreases with h.

Matchings in Random Biregular Bipartite Graphs

We study the existence of perfect matchings in suitably chosen induced subgraphs of random biregular bipartite graphs. We prove a result similar to a classical theorem of Erdos and Renyi about perfect matchings in random bipartite graphs. We also present an application to commutative graphs, a class of graphs that are featured in additive number theory.

The L^1-norm of exponential sums in Z^d

Let A be a finite set of integers and F_A its exponential sum. McGehee, Pigno & Smith and Konyagin have independently proved that the L^1-norm of F_A is at least c log|A| for some absolute constant c. The lower bound has the correct order of magnitude and was first conjectured by Littlewood. In this paper we present lower bounds on the L^1-norm of exponential sums of sets in the d-dimensional grid Z^d. We show that the L^1-norm of F_A is considerably larger than log|A| when A is a subset of Z^d with multidimensional structure. We furthermore prove similar lower bounds for sets in Z, which in a technical sense are multidimensional and discuss their connection to an inverse result on the theorem of McGehee, Pigno & Smith and Konyagin.

Plünnecke's Inequality

Plunnecke's inequality is the standard tool to obtain estimates on the cardinality of sumsets and has many applications in additive combinatorics. We present a new proof. The main novelty is that the proof is completed with no reference to Menger's theorem or Cartesian products of graphs. We also investigate the sharpness of the inequality and show that it can be sharp for arbitrarily long, but not for infinite commutative graphs. A key step in our investigation is the construction of arbitrarily long regular commutative graphs. Lastly we prove a necessary condition for the inequality to be attained.

New Proofs of Plünnecke-type Estimates for Product Sets in Groups

We present a new method to bound the cardinality of triple product sets in groups and give three applications. A new and unexpectedly short proof of the Plunnecke-Ruzsa sumset inequalities for Abelian groups. A new proof of a theorem of Tao on triple products, which generalises these inequalities when no assumption on commutativity is made. A further generalisation of the Plunnecke-Ruzsa inequalities in general groups.
