Abhyankar-Moh Semigroups for arbitrary hypersurfaces

For an arbitrary hypersurface singularity, we construct a family of semigroups associated with algebraically closed fields that arise as an infinite union of rings of series. These semigroups extend the value semigroup of a plane curve studied by Abhyankar and Moh. The algebraically closed fields under consideration possess a natural valuation that induces a corresponding value semigroup. We establish the necessary conditions under which these semigroups are independent of the choice of the root. Moreover, the extensions proposed by P. González and Kiyek-Micus, where González specifically addresses the case of quasi-ordinary singularities, and the extension introduced by Abbas-Assi, can be understood as particular instances within our constructed family.

Jacobian algebras and variation of hyperplane sections

We study the variation in moduli of hyperplane sections of a hypersurface $V(f)\subseteq \mathbf P^n$ with at most isolated singularities. Using the Milnor algebra $M(f)$, we give an infinitesimal quotient criterion for the hyperplane-section map $Φ(f):(\mathbf P^n)^*\dashrightarrow M(d,n-1)$ to be generically finite onto its image. The passage from the infinitesimal quotient to the coarse moduli space is justified by a local GIT slice argument. Our approach gives a Jacobian-algebraic extension of the Beauville--Patel--Riedl--Tseng theory from smooth hypersurfaces to hypersurfaces with isolated singularities. In the smooth case it recovers the Lefschetz criterion and, using recent weak Lefschetz results, gives generic finiteness for $n\geq 3$ in the range $d\geq n+2$. In the singular case a new obstruction appears: a linear Jacobian syzygy, equivalently, for non-cones, a positive-dimensional projective automorphism group. After this obstruction is excluded, maximal infinitesimal variation is governed by the injectivity of the critical Lefschetz map $\ell:M(f)_{d-1}\to M(f)_d$. We apply the criterion to plane curves, surfaces in $\mathbf P^3$, and hypersurfaces admitting singular hyperplane sections, obtaining new criteria involving nodal sections and an application to the Schoen quintic threefold.

Veronese Avoiding Hypersurfaces

We introduce Veronese-Avoiding hypersurfaces, inspired by the theory of associated forms of Alper--Isaev. In the smooth case, we reinterpret their criterion via Macaulay inverse systems: the Veronese-Avoiding condition is equivalent to the non-degeneracy of the associated form. In the singular case, our main theorem shows that a reduced hypersurface with exactly $n$ isolated singular points is Veronese-Avoiding if and only if these points are ordinary nodes in general linear position; we also classify singular plane cubics and treat fewer than $n$ nodes via a natural rational map. We then study the parameter space, proving local closedness and identifying a distinguished irreducible nodal locus. Finally, we prove a Lefschetz-type consequence for the Milnor algebra in degree $1$.

Initial ideal of a general rational or elliptic curve on quadrics

Over an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero, we prove that the generic initial ideal with respect to the degree reverse lexicographic term order of a general rational or elliptic curve on quadrics is almost revlex. Following constructive arguments, our proof combines features of a pencil of quadrics, interpolation methods and the notion of double generic initial ideal.

Free curves, Eigenschemes and Pencils of curves

Let $R=K[x,y,z]$. A reduced plane curve $C=V(f)\subset \mathbf P^2$ is $free \ $ if its associated module of tangent derivations $\mathrm{Der}(f)$ is a free $R$-module, or equivalently if the corresponding sheaf $T_ {\mathbf P^2 }(-\log C)$ of vector fields tangent to $C$ splits as a direct sum of line bundles on $\mathbf P^2$. In general, free curves are difficult to find, and in this note, we describe a new method for constructing free curves in $\mathbf P^2$. The key tools in our approach are eigenschemes and pencils of curves, combined with an interpretation of Saito's criterion in this context. Previous constructions typically applied only to curves with quasihomogeneous singularities, which is not necessary in our approach. We illustrate our method by constructing large families of free curves.

Construction of free curves by adding osculating conics to a given cubic curve

In the present article we construct new families of free and nearly free curves starting from a plane cubic curve $C$ and adding some of its hyperosculating conics. We present results that involve nodal cubic curves and the Fermat cubic. In addition, we provide new insight into the geometry of the $27$ hyperosculating conics of the Fermat cubic curve using well-chosen group actions.

On minimal Gorenstein Hilbert function

We conjecture that a class of Artinian Gorenstein Hilbert algebras called full Perazzo algebras always have minimal Hilbert function, fixing codimension and length. We prove the conjecture in length four and five, in low codimension. We also prove the conjecture for a particular subclass of algebras that occurs in every length and certain codimensions. As a consequence of our methods we give a new proof of part of a known result about the asymptotic behavior of the minimum entry of a Gorenstein Hilbert function.

Geproci sets on skew lines in $\mathbb P^3$ with two transversals

The purpose of this work is to pursue classification of geproci sets. Specifically we classify $[m,n]$-geproci sets which consist of $m=4$ points on each of $n$ skew lines, assuming the skew lines have two transversals in common. We show that in this case $n\leq 6$. Moreover we show that all geproci sets of this type are contained in the \emph{standard construction} for $m=4$ introduced in arXiv:2209.04820. Finally, we propose a conjectural representation for all geproci sets of this type, irrespective of the number $m$ of points on each skew line.

Lefschetz properties of Jacobian algebras and Jacobian modules

Let $V:f=0$ be a hypersurface of degree $d \geq 3$ in the complex projective space $\mathbb{P}^n$, $n \geq 3$, having only isolated singularities. Let $M(f)$ be the associated Jacobian algebra and $H: \ell=0$ be a hyperplane in $\mathbb{P}^n$ avoiding the singularities of $V$, but such that $V \cap H$ is singular. We related the Lefschetz type properties of the linear maps $\ell: M(f)_k \to M(f)_{k+1}$ induced by the multiplication by linear form $\ell$ to the singularities of the hyperplane section $V \cap H$. Similar results are obtained for the Jacobian module $N(f)$.

On the duals of smooth projective complex hypersurfaces

We show first that a generic hypersurface $V$ of degree $d\geq 3$ in the complex projective space $ \mathbb{P}^n$ of dimension $n \geq 3$ has at least one hyperplane section $V \cap H$ containing exactly $n$ ordinary double points, alias $A_1$ singularities, in general position, and no other singularities. Equivalently, the dual hypersurface $V^{\vee}$ has at least one normal crossing singularity of multiplicity $n$. Using this result, we show that the dual of any smooth hypersurface with $n,d \geq 3$ has at least a very singular point $q$, in particular a point $q$ of multiplicity $\geq n$.

Construction of free curves by adding lines to a given curve

In the present note we construct new families of free plane curves starting from a curve $C$ and adding high order inflectional tangent lines of $C$, lines joining the singularities of the curve $C$, or lines in the tangent cone of some singularities of $C$. These lines $L$ have in common that the intersection $C \cap L$ consists of a small number of points. We introduce the notion of a supersolvable plane curve and conjecture that such curves are always free, as in the known case of line arrangements. Some evidence for this conjecture is given as well, both in terms of a general result in the case of quasi homogeneous singularities and in terms of specific examples. We construct a new example of maximizing curve in degree 8 and the first and unique known example of maximizing curve in degree 9. In the final section, we use a stronger version of a result due to Schenck, Terao and Yoshinaga to construct families of free conic-line arrangements by adding lines to the conic-line arrangements of maximal Tjurina number recently classified by V. Beorchia and R. M. Miró-Roig in arXiv:2303.04665.

Companion varieties for root systems and Fermat arrangements

Unexpected hypersurfaces are a brand name for some special linear systems. They were introduced around 2017 and are a field of intensive study since then. They attracted a lot of attention because of their close tights to various other areas of mathematics including vector bundles, arrangements of hyperplanes, geometry of projective varieties. Our research is motivated by the what is now known as the BMSS duality, which is a new way of deriving projective varieties out of already constructed. The last author coined the concept of companion surfaces in the setting of unexpected curves admitted by the $B_3$ root system. Here we extend this construction in various directions. We revisit the configurations of points associated to either root systems or to Fermat arrangements and we study the geometry of the associated varieties and their companions.

CW-complex Nagata Idealizations

We introduce a novel construction which allows us to identify the elements of the skeletons of a CW-complex $P(m)$ and the monomials in $m$ variables. From this, we infer that there is a bijection between finite CW-subcomplexes of $P(m)$, which are quotients of finite simplicial complexes, and some bigraded standard Artinian Gorenstein algebras, generalizing previous constructions in \cite{F:S}, \cite{CGIM} and \cite{G:Z}. We apply this to a generalization of Nagata idealization for level algebras. These algebras are standard graded Artinian algebras whose Macaulay dual generator is given explicitly as a bigraded polynomial of bidegree $(1,d)$. We consider the algebra associated to polynomials of the same type of bidegree $(d_1,d_2)$.

On the Hilbert vector of the Jacobian module of a plane curve

We identify several classes of curves $C:f=0$, for which the Hilbert vector of the Jacobian module $N(f)$ can be completely determined, namely the 3-syzygy curves, the maximal Tjurina curves and the nodal curves, having only rational irreducible components. A result due to Hartshorne, on the cohomology of some rank 2 vector bundles on $\mathbb{P}^2$, is used to get a sharp lower bound for the initial degree of the Jacobian module $N(f)$, under a semistability condition.

Higher order Jacobians, Hessians and Milnor algebras

We introduce and study higher order Jacobian ideals, higher order and mixed Hessians, higher order polar maps, and higher order Milnor algebras associated to a reduced projective hypersurface. We relate these higher order objects to some standard graded Artinian Gorenstein algebras, and we study the corresponding Hilbert functions and Lefschetz properties.
