Extreme events in a broad-area semiconductor laser with coherent injection

Spatiotemporal extreme events are interesting phenomena, both from a fundamental point of view, as manifestations of complexity in dynamical systems, and for their possible applications in different research fields. Here, we present some recent results about extreme events in spatially extended semiconductor laser systems (broad-area VCSELs) with coherent injection. We study the statistics of spatiotemporal intensity peaks occurring in the transverse (x,y) section of the field perpendicular to the light propagation direction and identify regions in the parameter space where extreme events are more likely to occur. Searching for precursors of these phenomena, we concentrate, on one hand, on the spatiotemporal dynamics of the field phase and in particular on the presence of optical vortices in the vicinity of an extreme event. On the other hand, we focus on the laser gain dynamics and the phase space trajectories of the system close to the occurrence of an extreme event. Both these complementary approaches are successful and allow us to shed some light on potential prediction strategies.

2D optical rogue waves affected by transverse carrier diffusion in broad-area semiconductor lasers with a saturable absorber

Statistics and dynamics of 2D rogue waves in a broad-area semiconductor laser with an intracavity saturable absorber are numerically investigated under the effect of transverse carrier diffusion. We show that lateral diffusion of carriers alters the statistics of rogue waves by enhancing their formation in smaller ratios of carrier lifetimes in the active and passive materials while suppressing them when the ratio is larger. Temporal dynamics of the emitted rogue waves is also studied and shown that finite nonzero transverse carrier diffusion coefficient gives them a longer duration. To further approach the realistic experimental situation, we also investigated statistics and dynamics of rogue waves by simulating a circular disk-shape pump which replaces the flat pump profile typically used in numerical simulations of broad-area lasers. We show that finite pump shape reduces the number emitted rogue waves per unit area for large carrier lifetime ratios and increases that for smaller values of the ratio in both below and above laser threshold. Temporal width of the emitted rogue waves is also shown to reduce as a consequence of removing the nonphysical effects of infinite flat pump on carrier dynamics.

Extreme events induced by collisions in a forced semiconductor laser

We report on the experimental study of an optically driven multimode semiconductor laser with 1~m cavity length. We observed a spatiotemporal regime where real time measurements reveal very high intensity peaks in the laser field. Such a regime, which coexists with the locked state and with stable phase solitons, is characterized by the emergence of extreme events which produce a heavy tail statistics in the probability density function. We interpret the extreme events as collisions of spatiotemporal structures with opposite chirality. Numerical simulations of the semiconductor laser model, showing very similar dynamical behavior, substantiate our evidences and corroborate the description of such interactions as collisions between phase solitons and transient structures with different phase rotations.

Spatio-temporal extreme events in a laser with a saturable absorber

We study extreme events occurring in the transverse $(x,y)$ section of the field emitted by a broad-area semiconductor laser with a saturable absorber. The spatio-temporal events on which we perform the statistical analysis are identified as maxima of the field intensity in the 3D space $(x,y,t)$. We identify regions in the parameter space where extreme events are more likely to occur and we study the connection of those extreme events with the cavity solitons that are known to exist in the same system, both stationary and self-pulsing.

Refractory period of an excitable semiconductor laser with optical injection

Injection-locked semiconductor lasers can be brought to a neuron-like excitable regime when parameters are set close to the unlocking transition. Here we study experimentally the response of this system to repeated optical perturbations and observe the existence of a refractory period during which perturbations are not able to elicit an excitable response. The results are analyzed via simulations of a set of dynamical equations which reproduced adequately the experimental results.

Dissipative phase solitons in semiconductor lasers

We experimentally demonstrate the existence of non dispersive solitary waves associated with a 2$π$ phase rotation in a strongly multimode ring semiconductor laser with coherent forcing. Similarly to Bloch domain walls, such structures host a chiral charge. The numerical simulations based on a set of effective Maxwell-Bloch equations support the experimental evidence that only one sign of chiral charge is stable, which strongly affects the motion of the phase solitons. Furthermore, the reduction of the model to a modified Ginzburg Landau equation with forcing demonstrates the generality of these phenomena and exposes the impact of the lack of parity symmetry in propagative optical systems.

A hybrid soliton-based system: generation and steering of cavity solitons by means of photorefractive soliton electro-activation

We propose a hybrid soliton-based system consisting of a centrosymmetric photorefractive crystal, supporting photorefractive solitons, coupled to a vertical cavity surface emitting laser, supporting multistable cavity solitons. The composite nature of the system, which couples a propagative/conservative field dynamics to a stationary/dissipative one, allows to observe a more general and unified system phenomenology and to conceive novel photonic functionalities. The potential of the proposed hybrid system becomes clear when investigating the generation and control of cavity solitons by propagating a plane wave through electro-activated solitonic waveguides in the crystal. By changing the electro-activation voltage of the crystal, we prove that cavity solitons can be turned on and shifted with controlled velocity across the device section. The scheme can be exploited for applications to optical information encoding and processing.
