Endoscopic imaging of quantum gases through a fiber bundle

We use a coherent fiber bundle to demonstrate the endoscopic absorption imaging of quantum gases. We show that the fiber bundle introduces spurious noise in the picture mainly due to the strong core-to-core coupling. By direct comparison with free-space pictures, we observe that there is a maximum column density that can be reliably measured using our fiber bundle, and we derive a simple criterion to estimate it. We demonstrate that taking care of not exceeding such maximum, we can retrieve exact quantitative information about the atomic system, making this technique appealing for systems requiring isolation form the environment.

Observation of Stable Jones-Roberts Solitons in Bose-Einstein Condensates

We experimentally generate two-dimensional Jones-Roberts solitons in a three-dimensional atomic Bose-Einstein condensate by imprinting a triangular phase pattern. By monitoring their dynamics we observe that this kind of solitary waves are resistant to both dynamic (snaking) and thermodynamic instabilities, that usually are known to strongly limit the lifetime of dark plane solitons in dimensions higher than one. We additionally find signatures of a possible dipole-like interaction between them. Our results confirm that Jones-Roberts solitons are stable solutions of the non-linear Schrödinger equation in higher dimensions and promote these excitations for applications beyond matter wave physics, like energy and information transport in noisy and inhomogeneous environments.

Deterministic generation of multiparticle entanglement by quantum Zeno dynamics

Multiparticle entangled quantum states, a key resource in quantum-enhanced metrology and computing, are usually generated by coherent operations exclusively. However, unusual forms of quantum dynamics can be obtained when environment coupling is used as part of the state generation. In this work, we used quantum Zeno dynamics (QZD), based on nondestructive measurement with an optical microcavity, to deterministically generate different multiparticle entangled states in an ensemble of 36 qubit atoms in less than 5 microseconds. We characterized the resulting states by performing quantum tomography, yielding a time-resolved account of the entanglement generation. In addition, we studied the dependence of quantum states on measurement strength and quantified the depth of entanglement. Our results show that QZD is a versatile tool for fast and deterministic entanglement generation in quantum engineering applications.

Localization by Dissipative Disorder: a Deterministic Approach to Position Measurements

We propose an approach to position measurements based on the hypothesis that the action of a position detector on a quantum system can be effectively described by a dissipative disordered potential. We show that such kind of potential is able, via the dissipation-induced Anderson localization, to contemporary localize the wavefunction of the system and to dissipate information to modes bounded to the detector. By imposing a diabaticity condition we demonstrate that the dissipative dynamics between the modes of the system leads to a localized energy exchange between the detector and the rest of the environment -the "click" of the detector- thus providing a complete deterministic description of a position measurement. We finally numerically demonstrate that our approach is consistent with the Born probability rule.

Cross-dimensional phase transition from an array of 1D Luttinger liquids to a 3D Bose-Einstein condensate

We study the thermodynamic properties of a 2D array of coupled one-dimensional Bose gases. The system is realized with ultracold bosonic atoms loaded in the potential tubes of a two-dimensional optical lattice. For negligible coupling strength, each tube is an independent weakly interacting 1D Bose gas featuring Tomonaga Luttinger liquid behavior. By decreasing the lattice depth, we increase the coupling strength between the 1D gases and allow for the phase transition into a 3D condensate. We extract the phase diagram for such a system and compare our results with theoretical predictions. Due to the high effective mass across the periodic potential and the increased 1D interaction strength, the phase transition is shifted to large positive values of the chemical potential. Our results are prototypical to a variety of low-dimensional systems, where the coupling between the subsystems is realized in a higher spatial dimension such as coupled spin chains in magnetic insulators.

Thermodynamics of Strongly Correlated One-Dimensional Bose Gases

We investigate the thermodynamics of one-dimensional Bose gases in the strongly correlated regime. To this end, we prepare ensembles of independent 1D Bose gases in a two-dimensional optical lattice and perform high-resolution in situ imaging of the column-integrated density distribution. Using an inverse Abel transformation we derive effective one-dimensional line-density profiles and compare them to exact theoretical models. The high resolution allows for a direct thermometry of the trapped ensembles. The knowledge about the temperature enables us to extract thermodynamic equations of state such as the phase-space density, the entropy per particle and the local pair correlation function.

Fast compression of a cold atomic cloud using a blue detuned crossed dipole trap

We present the experimental realization of a compressible blue detuned crossed dipole trap for cold atoms allowing for fast dynamical compression (~ 5 - 10 ms) of 5x10^7 Rubidium atoms up to densities of ~ 10^13 cm^-3. The dipole trap consists of two intersecting tubes of blue-detuned laser light. These tubes are formed using a single, rapidly rotating laser beam which, for sufficiently fast rotation frequencies, can be accurately described by a quasi-static potential. The atomic cloud is compressed by dynamically reducing the trap volume leading to densities close to the Ioffe-Reggel criterion for light localization.

Observation of local temporal correlations in trapped quantum gases

We measure the temporal pair correlation function $g^{(2)}(τ)$ of a trapped gas of bosons above and below the critical temperature for Bose-Einstein condensation. The measurement is performed {\it in situ} using a local, time-resolved single-atom sensitive probing technique. Third and fourth order correlation functions are also extracted. We develop a theoretical model and compare it with our experimental data, finding good quantitative agreement and highlighting the role of interactions. Our results promote temporal correlations as new observables to study the dynamics of ultracold quantum gases.

Instabilities of a matter wave in a matter grating

We investigate the stability of Bloch waves for a Bose-Einstein condensate moving through a periodic lattice created by another condensate modulated by an optical lattice. We show that the coupling of phonon-antiphonon modes of the two species give rise to a very rich structure of the regimes for dynamical instability, with significant differences with respect to the case of a single condensate in an optical lattice. We characterize the relative weight of each condensate in the mixing and discuss an analytic limit that accounts for the bare structure of the instability diagrams.
