The work of Andrei Okounkov

Andrei Okounkov received the Fields Medal at the ICM 2006 in Madrid "for his contributions bridging probability, representation theory and algebraic geometry". This is a brief account of his work.

Elliptic gamma functions, triptic curves and SL_3(Z)

This is a condensed exposition of the results of math.QA/0601337, based on a talk of the first author at the Oberwolfach workshop "Deformations and Contractions in Mathematics and Physics", 15-21 January 2006.

Relative formality theorem and quantisation of coisotropic submanifolds

We prove a relative version of Kontsevich's formality theorem. This theorem involves a manifold M and a submanifold C and reduces to Kontsevich's theorem if C=M. It states that the DGLA of multivector fields on an infinitesimal neighbourhood of C is L-infinity-quasiisomorphic to the DGLA of multidifferential operators acting on sections of the exterior algebra of the conormal bundle. Applications to the deformation quantisation of coisotropic submanifolds are given. The proof uses a duality transformation to reduce the theorem to a version of Kontsevich's theorem for supermanifolds, which we also discuss. In physical language, the result states that there is a duality between the Poisson sigma model on a manifold with a D-brane and the Poisson sigma model on a supermanifold without branes (or, more properly, with a brane which extends over the whole supermanifold).

A gerbe for the elliptic gamma function

The identities for elliptic gamma functions discovered by A. Varchenko and one of us are generalized to an infinite set of identities for elliptic gamma functions associated to pairs of planes in 3-dimensional space. The language of stacks and gerbes gives a natural framework for a systematic description of these identities and their domain of validity. A triptic curve is the quotient of the complex plane by a subgroup of rank three (it is a stack). Our identities can be summarized by saying that elliptic gamma functions form a meromorphic section of a hermitian holomorphic abelian gerbe over the universal oriented triptic curve.

Formal Lagrangian Operad

Given a symplectic manifold $M$, we may define an operad structure on the the spaces $\op^k$ of the Lagrangian submanifolds of $(\bar{M})^k\times M$ via symplectic reduction. If $M$ is also a symplectic groupoid, then its multiplication space is an associative product in this operad. Following this idea, we provide a deformation theory for symplectic groupoids analog to the deformation theory of algebras. It turns out that the semi-classical part of Kontsevich's deformation of $C^\infty(\R^d)$ is a deformation of the trivial symplectic groupoid structure of $T^*\R^d$.

Hochschild cohomology of the Weyl algebra and traces in deformation quantization

We give a formula for a cocycle generating the Hochschild cohomology of the Weyl algebra with coefficients in its dual.It is given by an integral over the configuration space of ordered points on a circle. Using this formula and a non-commutative version of formal geometry, we obtain an explicit expression for the canonical trace in deformation quantization of symplectic manifolds.

Density of eigenvalues of random normal matrices

The relation between random normal matrices and conformal mappings discovered by Wiegmann and Zabrodin is made rigorous by restricting normal matrices to have spectrum in a bounded set. It is shown that for a suitable class of potentials the asymptotic density of eigenvalues is uniform with support in the interior domain of a simple smooth curve.

Coisotropic submanifolds in Poisson geometry and branes in the Poisson sigma model

General boundary conditions ("branes") for the Poisson sigma model are studied. They turn out to be labeled by coisotropic submanifolds of the given Poisson manifold. The role played by these boundary conditions both at the classical and at the perturbative quantum level is discussed. It turns out to be related at the classical level to the category of Poisson manifolds with dual pairs as morphisms and at the perturbative quantum level to the category of associative algebras (deforming algebras of functions on Poisson manifolds) with bimodules as morphisms. Possibly singular Poisson manifolds arising from reduction enter naturally into the picture and, in particular, the construction yields (under certain assumptions) their deformation quantization.

Even powers of divisors and elliptic zeta values

We introduce and study "elliptic zeta values", a two-parameter deformation of the values of Riemann's zeta function at positive integers. They are essentially Taylor coefficients of the logarithm of the elliptic gamma function, and share the SL(3,Z) modular properties of this function. Elliptic zeta values at even integers are related to Eisenstein series and thus to sums of odd powers of divisors. The elliptic zeta values at odd integers can be expressed in terms of generating series of sums of even powers of divisors.

Coxeter group actions on the complement of hyperplanes and special involutions

We consider both standard and twisted action of a (real) Coxeter group G on the complement M_G to the complexified reflection hyperplanes by combining the reflections with complex conjugation. We introduce a natural geometric class of special involutions in G and give explicit formulae which describe both actions on the total cohomology H(M_G,C) in terms of these involutions. As a corollary we prove that the corresponding twisted representation is regular only for the symmetric group S_n, the Weyl groups of type D_{2m+1}, E_6 and dihedral groups I_2 (2k+1) and that the standard action has no anti-invariants. We discuss also the relations with the cohomology of generalised braid groups.

Holomorphic matrix integrals

We study a class of holomorphic matrix models. The integrals are taken over middle dimensional cycles in the space of complex square matrices. As the size of the matrices tends to infinity, the distribution of eigenvalues is given by a measure with support on a collection of arcs in the complex planes. We show that the arcs are level sets of the imaginary part of a hyperelliptic integral connecting branch points.

Formal symplectic groupoid

The multiplicative structure of the trivial symplectic groupoid over $\mathbb R^d$ associated to the zero Poisson structure can be expressed in terms of a generating function. We address the problem of deforming such a generating function in the direction of a non-trivial Poisson structure so that the multiplication remains associative. We prove that such a deformation is unique under some reasonable conditions and we give the explicit formula for it. This formula turns out to be the semi-classical approximation of Kontsevich's deformation formula. For the case of a linear Poisson structure, the deformed generating function reduces exactly to the CBH formula of the associated Lie algebra. The methods used to prove existence are interesting in their own right as they come from an at first sight unrelated domain of mathematics: the Runge--Kutta theory of the numeric integration of ODE's.

Hypergeometric theta functions and elliptic Macdonald polynomials

Elliptic Macdonald polynomials of sl(2)-type and level 2 are introduced. Suitable limits of elliptic Macdonald polynomials are the standard Macdonald polynomials and conformal blocks. Identities for elliptic Macdonald polynomials, in particular their modular properties, are studied.
