Sound propagation in striped supersolid cold gases at zero temperature

We present a unified hydrodynamic approach for the sound propagation in the stripe phases realized in ultracold dipolar gas and spin-orbit-coupled BEC platforms at zero temperature. Despite the deep difference of the two platforms at a microscopic level, a similar hydrodynamic description can be formulated at a macroscopic level. The main difference between the two platforms is the lack of Galilean invariance in the spin-orbit case, resulting in a different identification of the normal (nonsuperfluid) component of the density, which leads to new terms in the equation for the current. In both cases the spectrum comprises two sounds, reflecting the spontaneous breaking of the U(1) and translational symmetries. Both sounds exhibit an anisotropic behavior. A comparison with the first and second sounds of the smectic-A liquid crystal is also presented.

Emerging supersolidity from a polariton condensate in a photonic crystal waveguide

A supersolid is a counter-intuitive phase of matter where its constituent particles are arranged into a crystalline structure, yet they are free to flow without friction. This requires the particles to share a global macroscopic phase while being able to reduce their total energy by spontaneous, spatial self-organisation. This exotic state of matter has been achieved in different systems using Bose-Einstein condensates coupled to cavities, possessing spin-orbit coupling, or dipolar interactions. Here we provide experimental evidence of a new implementation of the supersolid phase in a novel non-equilibrium context based on exciton-polaritons condensed in a topologically non-trivial, bound-in-the-continuum state with exceptionally low losses. We measure the density modulation of the polaritonic state indicating the breaking of translational symmetry with a remarkable precision of a few parts in a thousand. Direct access to the phase of the wavefunction allows us to additionally measure the local coherence of the superfluid component. We demonstrate the potential of our synthetic photonic material to host phonon dynamics and a multimode excitation spectrum.

Dynamics of Stripe Patterns in Supersolid Spin-Orbit-Coupled Bose Gases

Despite ground-breaking observations of supersolidity in spin-orbit-coupled Bose-Einstein condensates, until now the dynamics of the emerging spatially periodic density modulations has been vastly unexplored. Here, we demonstrate the nonrigidity of the density stripes in such a supersolid condensate and explore their dynamic behavior subject to spin perturbations. We show both analytically in infinite systems and numerically in the presence of a harmonic trap how spin waves affect the supersolid's density profile in the form of crystal waves, inducing oscillations of the periodicity as well as the orientation of the fringes. Both these features are well within reach of present-day experiments. Our results show that this system is a paradigmatic supersolid, featuring superfluidity in conjunction with a fully dynamic crystalline structure.

Time Translation Symmetry Breaking in an Isolated Spin-Orbit-Coupled Fluid of Light

We study the interplay between intrinsic spin-orbit coupling and nonlinear photon-photon interactions in a nonparaxial, elliptically polarized fluid of light propagating in a bulk Kerr medium. We find that in situations where the nonlinear interactions induce birefringence, i.e., a polarization-dependent nonlinear refractive index, their interplay with spin-orbit coupling results in an interference between the two polarization components of the fluid traveling at different wave vectors, which entails the breaking of translation symmetry along the propagation direction. This phenomenon leads to a Floquet band structure in the Bogoliubov spectrum of the fluid, and to characteristic oscillations of its intensity correlations. We characterize these oscillations in detail and point out their exponential growth at large propagation distances, revealing the presence of parametric resonances.

Supersolid phase of a spin-orbit-coupled Bose-Einstein condensate: a perturbation approach

The phase diagram of a Bose-Einstein condensate with Raman-induced spin-orbit coupling includes a stripe phase with supersolid features. In this work we develop a perturbation approach to study the ground state and the Bogoliubov modes of this phase, holding for small values of the Raman coupling. We obtain analytical predictions for the most relevant observables (including the periodicity of stripes, sound velocities, compressibility, and magnetic susceptibility) which are in excellent agreement with the exact (non perturbative) numerical results, obtained for significantly large values of the coupling. We further unveil the nature of the two gapless Bogoliubov modes in the long-wavelength limit. We find that the spin branch of the spectrum, corresponding in this limit to the dynamics of the relative phase between the two spin components, describes a translation of the fringes of the equilibrium density profile, thereby providing the crystal Goldstone mode typical of a supersolid configuration. Finally, using sum-rule arguments, we show that the superfluid density can be experimentally accessed by measuring the ratio of the sound velocities parallel and perpendicular to the direction of the spin-orbit coupling.

Exciting the Goldstone Modes of a Supersolid Spin-Orbit-Coupled Bose Gas

Supersolidity is deeply connected with the emergence of Goldstone modes, reflecting the spontaneous breaking of both phase and translational symmetry. Here, we propose accessible signatures of these modes in harmonically trapped spin-orbit-coupled Bose-Einstein condensates, where supersolidity appears in the form of stripes. By suddenly changing the trapping frequency, an axial breathing oscillation is generated, whose behavior changes drastically at the critical Raman coupling. Above the transition, a single mode of hybridized density and spin nature is excited, while below it, we predict a beating effect signaling the excitation of a Goldstone spin-dipole mode. We further provide evidence for the Goldstone mode associated with the translational motion of stripes. Our results open up new perspectives for probing supersolid properties in experimentally relevant configurations with both symmetric as well as highly asymmetric intraspecies interactions.

Spin-orbit-coupled fluids of light in bulk nonlinear media

We show that nonparaxial polarized light beams propagating in a bulk nonlinear Kerr medium naturally exhibit a coupling between the motional and the polarization degrees of freedom, realizing a spin-orbit-coupled mixture of fluids of light. We investigate the impact of this mechanism on the Bogoliubov modes of the fluid, using a suitable density-phase formalism built upon a linearization of the exact Helmholtz equation. The Bogoliubov spectrum is found to be anisotropic, and features both low-frequency gapless branches and high-frequency gapped ones. We compute the amplitudes of these modes and propose a couple of experimental protocols to study their excitation mechanisms. This allows us to highlight a phenomenon of hybridization between density and spin modes, which is absent in the paraxial description and represents a typical fingerprint of spin-orbit coupling.

Supersolidity of cnoidal waves in an ultracold Bose gas

A one-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensate may experience nonlinear periodic modulations known as "cnoidal waves". We argue that such structures represent promising candidates for the study of supersolidity-related phenomena in a non-equilibrium state. A mean-field treatment makes it possible to rederive Leggett's formula for the superfluid fraction of the system and to estimate it analytically. We determine the excitation spectrum, for which we obtain analytical results in the two opposite limiting cases of (i) a linearly modulated background and (ii) a train of dark solitons. The presence of two Goldstone (gapless) modes -- associated with the spontaneous breaking of $\mathrm{U}(1)$ symmetry and of continuous translational invariance -- at large wavelength is verified. We also calculate the static structure factor and the compressibility of cnoidal waves, which show a divergent behavior at the edges of each Brillouin zone.

Quantum phases and collective excitations of a spin-orbit-coupled Bose-Einstein condensate in a one-dimensional optical lattice

The ground state of a spin-orbit-coupled Bose gas in a one-dimensional optical lattice is known to exhibit a mixed regime, where the condensate wave function is given by a superposition of multiple Bloch-wave components, and an unmixed one, in which the atoms occupy a single Bloch state. The unmixed regime features two unpolarized Bloch-wave phases, having quasimomentum at the center or at the edge of the first Brillouin zone, and a polarized Bloch-wave phase at intermediate quasimomenta. By calculating the critical values of the Raman coupling and of the lattice strength at the transitions among the various phases, we show the existence of a tricritical point where the mixed, the polarized and the edge-quasimomentum phases meet, and whose appearance is a consequence of the spin-dependent interaction. Furthermore, we evaluate the excitation spectrum in the unmixed regime and we characterize the behavior of the phonon and the roton modes, pointing out the instabilities occurring when a phase transition is approached.

Drag force and superfluidity in the supersolid stripe phase of a spin-orbit-coupled Bose-Einstein condensate

The phase diagram of a spin-orbit-coupled two-component Bose gas includes a supersolid stripe phase, which is featuring density modulations along the direction of the spin-orbit coupling. This phase has been recently found experimentally [J.~Li \textit{et al.}, Nature (London) \textbf{543}, 91 (2017)]. In the present work we characterize the superfluid behavior of the stripe phase by calculating the drag force acting on a moving impurity. Because of the gapless band structure of the excitation spectrum, the Landau critical velocity vanishes if the motion is not strictly parallel to the stripes, and energy dissipation takes place at any speed. Moreover, due to the spin-orbit coupling, the drag force can develop a component perpendicular to the velocity of the impurity. Finally, by estimating the time over which the energy dissipation occurs, we find that for slow impurities the effects of friction are negligible on a time scale up to several seconds, which is comparable with the duration of a typical experiment.

Momentum distribution and coherence of a weakly interacting Bose gas after a quench

We consider a weakly interacting uniform atomic Bose gas with a time-dependent nonlinear coupling constant. By developing a suitable Bogoliubov treatment we investigate the time evolution of several observables, including the momentum distribution, the degree of coherence in the system, and their dependence on dimensionality and temperature. We rigorously prove that the low-momentum Bogoliubov modes remain frozen during the whole evolution, while the high-momentum ones adiabatically follow the change in time of the interaction strength. At intermediate momenta we point out the occurrence of oscillations, which are analogous to Sakharov oscillations. We identify two wide classes of time-dependent behaviors of the coupling for which an exact solution of the problem can be found, allowing for an analytic computation of all the relevant observables. A special emphasis is put on the study of the coherence property of the system in one spatial dimension. We show that the system exhibits a smooth "light-cone effect," with typically no prethermalization.

Optical-lattice-assisted magnetic phase transition in a spin-orbit-coupled Bose-Einstein condensate

We investigate the effect of a periodic potential generated by a one-dimensional optical lattice on the magnetic properties of an $S=1/2$ spin-orbit-coupled Bose gas. By increasing the lattice strength one can achieve a magnetic phase transition between a polarized and an unpolarized Bloch wave phase, characterized by a significant enhancement of the contrast of the density fringes. If the wave vector of the periodic potential is chosen close to the roton momentum, the transition could take place at very small lattice intensities, revealing the strong enhancement of the response of the system to a weak density perturbation. By solving the Gross-Pitaevskii equation in the presence of a three-dimensional trapping potential, we shed light on the possibility of observing the magnetic phase transition in currently available experimental conditions.

Tricriticalities and Quantum Phases in Spin-Orbit-Coupled Spin-$1$ Bose Gases

We study the zero-temperature phase diagram of a spin-orbit-coupled Bose-Einstein condensate of spin $1$, with equally weighted Rashba and Dresselhaus couplings. Depending on the antiferromagnetic or ferromagnetic nature of the interactions, we find three kinds of striped phases with qualitatively different behaviors in the modulations of the density profiles. Phase transitions to the zero-momentum and the plane-wave phases can be induced in experiments by independently varying the Raman coupling strength and the quadratic Zeeman field. The properties of these transitions are investigated in detail, and the emergence of tricritical points, which are the direct consequence of the spin-dependent interactions, is explicitly discussed.

Bose-Einstein condensation with spin-orbit coupling

The recent realization of synthetic spin-orbit coupling represents an outstanding achievement in the physics of ultracold quantum gases. In this review we explore the properties of a spin-orbit-coupled Bose-Einstein condensate with equal Rashba and Dresselhaus strengths. This system presents a rich phase diagram, which exhibits a tricritical point separating a zero-momentum phase, a spin-polarized plane-wave phase, and a stripe phase. In the stripe phase translational invariance is spontaneously broken, in analogy with supersolids. Spin-orbit coupling also strongly affects the dynamics of the system. In particular, the excitation spectrum exhibits intriguing features, including the suppression of the sound velocity, the emergence of a roton minimum in the plane-wave phase, and the appearance of a double gapless band structure in the stripe phase. Finally, we discuss a combined procedure to make the stripes visible and stable, thus allowing for a direct experimental detection.

Visibility and stability of superstripes in a spin-orbit-coupled Bose-Einstein condensate

We consider a spin-$1/2$ Bose-Einstein condensate with equal Rashba and Dresselhaus spin-orbit coupling. After reviewing some relevant features of the quantum phases of the system, we present a short study on how their properties are changed by the presence of non-zero magnetic detunings and spin-asymmetric interactions. At small values of the Raman coupling and of the magnetic field the so-called stripe phase occurs, which displays both superfluidity and periodic density modulations, in analogy with supersolids. We finally review a recent proposal (Phys. Rev. A 90, 041604) to improve the visibility of the fringes, based on the space separation of the two spin components into a 2D bi-layer configuration and on the application of a $π/2$ Bragg pulse, and we show that this new configuration also yields a sizable increase of the stability of the stripe phase against magnetic fluctuations.

Approach for making visible and stable stripes in a spin-orbit-coupled Bose-Einstein superfluid

The striped phase exhibited by a spin-$1/2$ Bose-Einstein condensate with spin-orbit coupling is characterized by the spontaneous breaking of two continuous symmetries: gauge and translational symmetry. This is a peculiar feature of supersolids and is the consequence of interaction effects. We propose an approach to produce striped configurations with high-contrast fringes, making their experimental detection in atomic gases a realistic perspective. Our approach, whose efficiency is directly confirmed by three-dimensional Gross-Pitaevskii simulations, is based on the space separation of the two spin components into a two-dimensional bilayer configuration, causing the reduction of the effective interspecies interaction and the increase of the stability of the striped phase. We also explore the effect of a $π/2$ Bragg pulse, causing the increase of the fringe wavelength, and of a $π/2$ rf pulse, revealing the coherent nature of the order parameter in the spin channel.

Superstripes and the excitation spectrum of a spin-orbit-coupled Bose-Einstein condensate

Using Bogoliubov theory we calculate the excitation spectrum of a spinor Bose-Einstein condensed gas with equal Rashba and Dresselhaus spin-orbit coupling in the stripe phase. The emergence of a double gapless band structure is pointed out as a key signature of Bose-Einstein condensation and of the spontaneous breaking of translational invariance symmetry. In the long wavelength limit the lower and upper branches exhibit, respectively, a clear spin and density nature. For wave vectors close to the first Brillouin zone, the lower branch acquires an important density character responsible for the divergent behavior of the structure factor and of the static response function, reflecting the occurrence of crystalline order. The sound velocities are calculated as functions of the Raman coupling for excitations propagating orthogonal and parallel to the stripes. Our predictions provide new perspectives for the identification of supersolid phenomena in ultracold atomic gases.

Anisotropic dynamics of a spin-orbit coupled Bose-Einstein condensate

By calculating the density response function we identify the excitation spectrum of a Bose-Einstein condensate with equal Rashba and Dresselhaus spin-orbit coupling. We find that the velocity of sound along the direction of spin-orbit coupling is deeply quenched and vanishes when one approaches the second-order phase transition between the plane wave and the zero momentum quantum phases. We also point out the emergence of a roton minimum in the excitation spectrum for small values of the Raman coupling, providing the onset of the transition to the stripe phase. Our findings point out the occurrence of a strong anisotropy in the dynamic behavior of the gas. A hydrodynamic description accounting for the collective oscillations in both uniform and harmonically trapped gases is also derived.
