A New Matrix Model for Noncommutative Field Theory

We describe a new regularization of quantum field theory on the noncommutative torus by means of one-dimensional matrix models. The construction is based on the Elliott-Evans inductive limit decomposition of the noncommutative torus algebra. The matrix trajectories are obtained via the expansion of fields in a basis of new noncommutative solitons described by projections and partial isometries. The matrix quantum mechanics are compared with the usual zero-dimensional matrix model regularizations and some applications are sketched.

Fredholm Modules for Quantum Euclidean Spheres

The quantum Euclidean spheres, $S_q^{N-1}$, are (noncommutative) homogeneous spaces of quantum orthogonal groups, $\SO_q(N)$. The *-algebra $A(S^{N-1}_q)$ of polynomial functions on each of these is given by generators and relations which can be expressed in terms of a self-adjoint, unipotent matrix. We explicitly construct complete sets of generators for the K-theory (by nontrivial self-adjoint idempotents and unitaries) and the K-homology (by nontrivial Fredholm modules) of the spheres $S_q^{N-1}$. We also construct the corresponding Chern characters in cyclic homology and cohomology and compute the pairing of K-theory with K-homology. On odd spheres (i. e., for N even) we exhibit unbounded Fredholm modules by means of a natural unbounded operator D which, while failing to have compact resolvent, has bounded commutators with all elements in the algebra $A(S^{N-1}_q)$.

Instanton algebras and quantum 4-spheres

We study some generalized instanton algebras which are required to describe `instantonic complex rank 2 bundles'. The spaces on which the bundles are defined are not prescribed from the beginning but rather are obtained from some natural requirements on the instantons. They turn out to be quantum 4-spheres $S^4_q$, with $q\in\IC$, and the instantons are described by self-adjoint idempotents e. We shall also clarify some issues related to the vanishing of the first Chern-Connes class $ch_1(e)$ and on the use of the second Chern-Connes class $ch_2(e)$ as a volume form.

Twisted Configurations over Quantum Euclidean Spheres

We show that the relations which define the algebras of the quantum Euclidean planes $\b{R}^N_q$ can be expressed in terms of projections provided that the unique central element, the radial distance from the origin, is fixed. The resulting reduced algebras without center are the quantum Euclidean spheres $S^{N-1}_q$. The projections $e=e^2=e^*$ are elements in $\Mat_{2^n}(S^{N-1}_q)$, with N=2n+1 or N=2n, and can be regarded as defining modules of sections of q-generalizations of monopoles, instantons or more general twisted bundles over the spheres. We also give the algebraic definition of normal and cotangent bundles over the spheres in terms of canonically defined projections in $\Mat_{N}(S^{N-1}_q)$.

Instantons on the Quantum 4-Spheres S^4_q

We introduce noncommutative algebras $A_q$ of quantum 4-spheres $S^4_q$, with $q\in\IR$, defined via a suspension of the quantum group $SU_q(2)$, and a quantum instanton bundle described by a selfadjoint idempotent $e\in \Mat_4(A_q)$, $e^2=e=e^*$. Contrary to what happens for the classical case or for the noncommutative instanton constructed in Connes-Landi, the first Chern-Connes class $ch_1(e)$ does not vanish thus signaling a dimension drop. The second Chern-Connes class $ch_2(e)$ does not vanish as well and the couple $(ch_1(e), ch_2(e))$ defines a cycle in the $(b,B)$ bicomplex of cyclic homology.

Noncommutative Manifolds the Instanton Algebra and Isospectral Deformations

We give new examples of noncommutative manifolds that are less standard than the NC-torus or Moyal deformations of $\Rb^n$. They arise naturally from basic considerations of noncommutative differential topology and have non-trivial global features. The new examples include the instanton algebra and the NC-4-spheres $S^4_θ$. The noncommutative algebras $\Ac=C^{\ify} (S^{4}_θ)$ of functions on NC-spheres are solutions to the vanishing, $ {\rm ch}_j (e) = 0, j < 2 $, of the Chern character in the cyclic homology of $\Ac$ of an idempotent $e \in M_4 (\Ac), e^2 = e, e = e^*$. The universal noncommutative space defined by this equation is a noncommutative Grassmanian defined by very non trivial cubic relations. This space ${\rm Gr}$ contains the suspension of a NC-3-sphere intimately related to quantum group deformations ${\rm SU}_q (2)$ of ${\rm SU} (2)$ but for unusual values (complex values of modulus one) of the parameter $q$ of $q$-analogues, $q=\exp (2πi \t)$. We then construct the noncommutative geometry of $S_{\t}^4$ as given by a spectral triple $(\Ac, \Hc, D)$ and check all axioms of noncommutative manifolds. The Dirac operator $D$ on the noncommutative 4-spheres $S_{\t}^4$ gives a solution to the basic quartic equation defining the `volume form' $ < (e - {1/2}) [D,e]^4 > = \g_5$, where $<$ is the projection on the commutant of $4 \ts 4$ matrices. Finally, we show that any compact Riemannian spin manifold whose isometry group has rank $r \geq 2$ admits isospectral deformations to noncommutative geometries.

Some Properties of Non-linear $σ$-Models in Noncommutative Geometry

We introduce non-linear $σ$-models in the framework of noncommutative geometry with special emphasis on models defined on the noncommutative torus. We choose as target spaces the two point space and the circle and illustrate some characteristic features of the corresponding $σ$-models. In particular we construct a $σ$-model instanton with topological charge equal to 1. We also define and investigate some properties of a noncommutative analogue of the Wess-Zumino-Witten model.

Eigenvalues as Dynamical Variables

We review some work done with C. Rovelli on the use of the eigenvalues of the Dirac operator on a curved spacetime as dynamical variables, the main motivation coming from their invariance under the action of diffeomorphisms. The eigenvalues constitute an infinite set of ``observables'' for general relativity and can be taken as variables for an invariant description of the gravitational field dynamics.

Projective Modules of Finite Type and Monopoles over $S^2$

We give a unifying description of all inequivalent vector bundles over the 2-dimensional sphere $S^2$ by constructing suitable global projectors $p$ via equivariant maps. Each projector determines the projective module of finite type of sections of the corresponding complex rank 1 vector bundle over $S^2$. The canonical connection $\nabla = p \circ d$ is used to compute the topological charges. Transposed projectors gives opposite values for the charges, thus showing that transposition of projectors, although an isomorphism in K-theory, is not the identity map. Also, we construct the partial isometry yielding the equivalence between the tangent projector (which is trivial in K-theory) and the real form of the charge 2 projector.

Deconstructing Monopoles and Instantons

We give a unifying description of the Dirac monopole on the 2-sphere $S^2$, of a graded monopole on a (2,2)-supersphere $S^{2,2}$ and of the BPST instanton on the 4-sphere $S^4$, by constructing a suitable global projector $p$ via equivariant maps. This projector determines the projective module of finite type of sections of the corresponding vector bundle. The canonical connection $\nabla = p \circ d$ is used to compute the topological charge which is found to be equal to -1 for the three cases. The transposed projector $q=p^t$ gives the value +1 for the charges; this showing that transposition of projectors, although an isomorphism in $K$-theory, is not the identity map. We also study the invariance under the action of suitable Lie groups.

Projective Systems of Noncommutative Lattices as a Pregeometric Substratum

We present an approximation to topological spaces by {\it noncommutative} lattices. This approximation has a deep physical flavour based on the impossibility to fully localize particles in any position measurement. The original space being approximated is recovered out of a projective limit.

Gravity from Dirac Eigenvalues

We study a formulation of euclidean general relativity in which the dynamical variables are given by a sequence of real numbers $λ_{n}$, representing the eigenvalues of the Dirac operator on the curved spacetime. These quantities are diffeomorphism-invariant functions of the metric and they form an infinite set of ``physical observables'' for general relativity. Recent work of Connes and Chamseddine suggests that they can be taken as natural variables for an invariant description of the dynamics of gravity. We compute the Poisson brackets of the $λ_{n}$'s, and find that these can be expressed in terms of the propagator of the linearized Einstein equations and the energy-momentum of the eigenspinors. We show that the eigenspinors' energy-momentum is the Jacobian matrix of the change of coordinates from the metric to the $λ_{n}$'s. We study a variant of the Connes-Chamseddine spectral action which eliminates a disturbing large cosmological term. We analyze the corresponding equations of motion and find that these are solved if the energy momenta of the eigenspinors scale linearly with the mass. Surprisingly, this scaling law codes Einstein's equations. Finally we study the coupling to a physical fermion field.

An Introduction to Noncommutative Spaces and their Geometry

These lectures notes are an intoduction for physicists to several ideas and applications of noncommutative geometry. The necessary mathematical tools are presented in a way which we feel should be accessible to physicists. We illustrate applications to Yang-Mills, fermionic and gravity models, notably we describe the spectral action recently introduced by Chamseddine and Connes. We also present an introduction to recent work on noncommutative lattices. The latter have been used to construct topologically nontrivial quantum mechanical and field theory models, in particular alternative models of lattice gauge theory. Here is the list of sections: 1. General Relativity in terms of Dirac Eigenvalues

The eigenvalues of the Dirac operator on a curved spacetime are diffeomorphism-invariant functions of the geometry. They form an infinite set of ``observables'' for general relativity. Recent work of Chamseddine and Connes suggests that they can be taken as variables for an invariant description of the gravitational field's dynamics. We compute the Poisson brackets of these eigenvalues and find them in terms of the energy-momentum of the eigenspinors and the propagator of the linearized Einstein equations. We show that the eigenspinors' energy-momentum is the Jacobian matrix of the change of coordinates from metric to eigenvalues. We also consider a minor modification of the spectral action, which eliminates the disturbing huge cosmological term and derive its equations of motion. These are satisfied if the energy momentum of the trans Planckian eigenspinors scale linearly with the eigenvalue; we argue that this requirement approximates the Einstein equations.

Noncommutative Lattices and the Algebra of their Continuous Functions

Recently a new kind of approximation to continuum topological spaces has been introduced, the approximating spaces being partially ordered sets (posets) with a finite or at most a countable number of points. The partial order endows a poset with a nontrivial non-Hausdorff topology. Their ability to reproduce important topological information of the continuum has been the main motivation for their use in quantum physics. Posets are truly noncommutative spaces, or {\it noncommutative lattices}, since they can be realized as structure spaces of noncommutative $C^*$-algebras. These noncommutative algebras play the same role of the algebra of continuous functions ${\cal C}(M)$ on a Hausdorff topological space $M$ and can be thought of as algebras of operator valued functions on posets. In this article, we will review some mathematical results that establish a duality between finite posets and a certain class of C$^*$-algebras. We will see that the algebras in question are all postliminal approximately finite dimensional (AF) algebras.

K-Theory of Noncommutative Lattices

Noncommutative lattices have been recently used as finite topological approximations in quantum physical models. As a first step in the construction of bundles and characteristic classes over such noncommutative spaces, we shall study their $K$-theory. We shall do it algebraically, by studying the algebraic $K$-theory of the associated algebras of `continuous functions' which turn out to be noncommutative approximately finite dimensional (AF) $C^*$-algebra . We also work out several examples.

Gravity and Electromagnetism in Noncommutative Geometry

We present a unified description of gravity and electromagnetism in the framework of a $Z_2$ noncommutative differential calculus. It can be considered as a ``discrete version" of Kaluza-Klein theory, where the fifth continuous dimension is replaced by two discrete points. We derive an action which coincides with the dimensionally reduced one of the ordinary Kaluza-Klein theory.
