Incremental universality of Wigner random matrices

Properties of universality have essential relevance for the theory of random matrices usually called the Wigner ensemble. The issue was analysed up to recent years with detailed and relevant results. We present a slightly different view and compare the large-$n$ limit of connected correlators of distinct ensembles: universality has steps or degrees, precisely counted by the number of probability moments of the matrix entries, which match among distinct ensembles.

Sparse Random Block Matrices : universality

We study ensembles of sparse random block matrices generated from the adjacency matrix of a Erdös-Renyi random graph with $N$ vertices of average degree $Z$, inserting a real symmetric $d \times d$ random block at each non-vanishing entry. We consider some ensembles of random block matrices with rank $r < d$ and with maximal rank, $r=d$. The spectral moments of the sparse random block matrix are evaluated for $N \to \infty$, $d$ finite or infinite, and several probability distributions for the blocks (e.g. fixed trace, bounded trace and Gaussian). Because of the concentration of the probability measure in the $d \to \infty$ limit, the spectral moments are independent of the probability measure of the blocks (with mild assumptions of isotropy, smoothness and sub-gaussian tails). The Effective Medium Approximation is the limiting spectral density of the sparse random block ensembles with finite rank. Analogous classes of universality hold for the Laplacian sparse block ensemble. The same limiting distributions are obtained using random regular graphs instead of Erdös-Renyi graphs.

Sparse Random Block Matrices

The spectral moments of ensembles of sparse random block matrices are analytically evaluated in the limit of large order. The structure of the sparse matrix corresponds to the Erdös-Renyi random graph. The blocks are i.i.d. random matrices of the classical ensembles GOE or GUE. The moments are evaluated for finite or infinite dimension of the blocks. The correspondences between sets of closed walks on trees and classes of irreducible partitions studied in free probability together with functional relations are powerful tools for analytic evaluation of the limiting moments. They are helpful to identify probability laws for the blocks and limits of the parameters which allow the evaluation of all the spectral moments and of the spectral density.

Proof of a conjecture on the infinite dimension limit of a unifying model for random matrix theory

We study the large $N$ limit of a sparse random block matrix ensemble. It depends on two parameters: the average connectivity $Z$ and the size of the blocks $d$, which is the dimension of an euclidean space. In the limit of large $d$, with $\frac{Z}{d}$ fixed, we prove the conjecture that the spectral distribution of the sparse random block matrix converges in the case of the Adjacency block matrix to the one of the effective medium approximation, in the case of the Laplacian block matrix to the Marchenko-Pastur distribution. We extend previous analytical computations of the moments of the spectral density of the Adjacency block matrix and the Lagrangian block matrix, valid for all values of $Z$ and $d$.

A unifying model for random matrix theory in arbitrary space dimensions

A sparse random block matrix model suggested by the Hessian matrix used in the study of elastic vibrational modes of amorphous solids is presented and analyzed. By evaluating some moments, benchmarked against numerics, differences in the eigenvalue spectrum of this model in different limits of space dimension $d$, and for arbitrary values of the lattice coordination number $Z$, are shown and discussed. As a function of these two parameters (and their ratio $Z/d$), the most studied models in random matrix theory (Erdos-Renyi graphs, effective medium, replicas) can be reproduced in the various limits of block dimensionality $d$. Remarkably, the Marchenko-Pastur spectral density (which is recovered by replica calculations for the Laplacian matrix) is reproduced exactly in the limit of infinite size of the blocks, or $d\rightarrow\infty$, which for the first time clarifies the physical meaning of space dimension in these models. The approximate results for $d=3$ provided by our method have many potential applications in the future, from the vibrational spectrum of glasses and elastic networks, to wave-localization, disordered conductors, random resistor networks and random walks.

Random Antagonistic Matrices

The ensemble of antagonistic matrices is introduced and studied. In antagonistic matrices the entries $\mathcal A_{i,j}$ and $\mathcal A_{j,i}$ are real and have opposite signs, or are both zero, and the diagonal is zero. This generalization of antisymmetric matrices is suggested by the linearized dynamics of competitive species in ecology.

Hydrodynamically synchronized states in active colloidal arrays

Colloidal particles moving in a fluid interact via the induced velocity field. The collective dynamic state for a class of actively forced colloids, driven by harmonic potentials via a rule that couples forces to configurations, to perform small oscillations around an average position, is shown by experiment, simulation and theoretical arguments to be determined by the eigenmode structure of the coupling matrix. It is remarkable that the dynamical state can therefore be predicted from the mean spatial configuration of the active colloids, or from an analysis of the fluctuations near equilibrium. This has the surprising consequence that while 2 particles, or polygonal arrays of 4 or more colloids, synchronize with the nearest neighbors in anti-phase, a system of 3 equally spaced colloids synchronizes in-phase. In the absence of thermal fluctuations, the stable dynamical state is predominantly formed by the eigenmode with longest relaxation time.

Patterns of synchronization in the hydrodynamic coupling of active colloids

A system of active colloidal particles driven by harmonic potentials to oscillate about the vertices of a regular polygon, with hydrodynamic coupling between all particles, is described by a piece-wise linear model which exhibits various patterns of synchronization. Analytical solutions are obtained for this class of dynamical systems. Depending only on the number of particles, the synchronization occurs into states in which nearest neighbors oscillate either in-phase, or anti-phase, or in phase-locked (time-shifted) trajectories.

Real symmetric random matrices and replicas

Various ensembles of random matrices with independent entries are analyzed by the replica formalism in the large-N limit. A result on the Laplacian random matrix with Wigner-rescaling is generalized to arbitrary probability distribution.

Real symmetric random matrices and paths counting

Exact evaluation of $<{\rm Tr} S^p>$ is here performed for real symmetric matrices $S$ of arbitrary order $n$, up to some integer $p$, where the matrix entries are independent identically distributed random variables, with an arbitrary probability distribution. These expectations are polynomials in the moments of the matrix entries ; they provide useful information on the spectral density of the ensemble in the large $n$ limit. They also are a straightforward tool to examine a variety of rescalings of the entries in the large $n$ limit.

Probability density of determinants of random matrices

In this brief paper the probability density of a random real, complex and quaternion determinant is rederived using singular values. The behaviour of suitably rescaled random determinants is studied in the limit of infinite order of the matrices.

Universality of the Tearing Phase in Matrix Models

The spontaneous symmetry breaking associated to the tearing of a random surface, where large dynamical holes fill the surface, was recently analized obtaining a non-universal critical exponent on a border phase. Here the issue of universality is explained by an independent analysis. The one hole sector of the model is useful to manifest the origin of the (limited) non-universal behaviour, that is the existence of two inequivalent critical points.
