Quantum dynamics of the corner of the Bianchi IX model in WKB approximation

In this paper we analyse the Bianchi IX Universe dynamics within the corner region associated to the potential term which the spatial curvature induces in the Minisuperspace. The study is done in the vacuum and in the presence of a massless scalar field $ϕ$ and a cosmological constant term $Λ$. We investigate the dynamics in terms of WKB scenario for which the isotropic Misner variables (the volume) and one of the two anisotropic ones (and $ϕ$ when present) are treated on a semi-classical level, while the remaining anisotropy degree of freedom, the one trapped in the corner, is described on a pure quantum level. The quantum dynamics always reduces to the one of a time-dependent Schröedinger equation for a harmonic potential with a time dependent frequency. The vacuum case is treated in the limits of a collpasing and an expanding Universe, while the dynamics in presence of $ϕ$ and $Λ$ is studied for $t \rightarrow \infty $. In both analysis the quantum dynamics of the anisotropy variable is associated to a decaying standard deviation of its probability density, corresponding to a suppression of the quantum anisotropy associated. In the vacuum case, the corner configuration becomes an attractor for the dynamics and the evolution resembles that one of a Taub cosmology in the limit of a non-singular initial Universe. This suggests that if the Bianchi dynamics enters enough the potential corner then the initial singularity is removed and a Taub picture emerges. The case when $ϕ$ is present well mimics the De-Sitter phase of an inflationary Universe. Here we show that both the classical and quantum anisotropies are exponentially suppressed, so that the resulting dynamics corresponds to an isotropic closed Robertson-Walker geometry.

Semiclassical and Quantum Polymer Effects in the Flat Isotropic Universe

We analyze some relevant semiclassical and quantum features of the implementation of Polymer Quantum Mechanics to the phenomenology of the flat isotropic Universe. We firstly investigate a parallelism between the semiclassical polymer dynamics of the flat isotropic Universe, as reduced to the effect of a modified simplectic structure, and the so-called Generalized Uncertainty Principle. We show how the difference in the sign of the fundamental Poisson bracket is reflected in a sign of the modified source term in the Friedmann equation, responsible for the removal of the initial singularity in the polymer case and for the survival of a singular point in the Universe past, when the Generalized Uncertainty Principle is concerned. Then, we study the regularization of the vacuum energy of a free massless scalar field, by implementing a second quantization formalism in the context of Polymer Quantum Mechanics. We show that, from this reformulation, naturally emerges a Cosmological Constant term for the isotropic Universe, whose value depends directly on the polymer parameter of the regularization. Finally, we investigate the behaviour of gravitational waves on the background of a modified dynamics, according to the semiclassical Friedmann equation. We demonstrate that the presence of a Bounce in the Universe past, naturally removes the divergence of the gravitational wave amplitude and they can, in principle, propagate across the minimum volume turning point. This result offers the intriguing perspective for the detection of gravitational signals coming from the pre-Big Bounce collapsing Universe.

The Role of Entropy in the Evolutionary Quantization of the Isotropic Universe

In this paper, we analyze the dynamics of an isotropic closed Universe in the presence of a cosmological constant term and we compare its behavior in the standard Wheeler-DeWitt equation approach with the one when a Lagrangian fluid is considered in the spirit of the Kuchar-Brown paradigm. In particular, we compare the tunnelling of the Universe from the classically forbidden region to the allowed one, showing that considering a time evolution deeply influences the nature of the model. In fact, we show that in the presence of the Lagrangian fluid, the cosmological singularity is restored both in the classical and the quantum regime. However, in the quantum regime the singularity is probabilistically suppressed for some energy eigenvalues and in the case the latter is equal to zero, one recovers the standard WDW case. Finally, we introduce a cut-off physics feature in the Minisuperspace by considering a Polymer quantum mechanical approach, mainly limiting our attention to the semi-classical dynamics (the quantum treatment is inhibited by the non-local nature of the Hamiltonian operator). We show that the singularity is again removed, like in the fluid-free model, and a bouncing cosmology emerges so that the present model could mimic a cyclic cosmology.

Polymer representation of the Bianchi IX Cosmology in the Misner variables

We analyze the Bianchi IX Universe in the Polymer Quantum Mechanics framework by facing both semiclassical and purely quantum effects near the cosmological singularity. We adopt Misner variables to describe the model dynamics, applying the polymer paradigm simultaneously to the isotropic one (linked to the Universe volume) and to the two anisotropy ones (characterizing the physical gravitational degrees of freedom). Setting two different cut-off scales for the two different variable sets, i.e. the geometrical volume and the gravity tensor modes, we demonstrate how the semiclassical properties of the Bianchi IX dynamics are sensitive to the ratio of the cut-off parameters. In particular, the semiclassical evolution turns out to be chaotic only if the parameter associated to the volume discretization is greater or equal to that one of the anisotropies. Concerning the chaotic case we perform a purely quantum polymer analysis, demonstrating that the original Misner result about the existence of quasi-classical states near the singularity (in the sense of high occupation numbers) is still valid in the revised approach and able to account for cut-off physics effects. The possibility for a comparison with the original study by Misner is possible because the singularity is still present in the semiclassical evolution of the cosmological model for all the parameter space. We interpret this surprising feature as the consequence of a geometrical volume discretization which does not prevent the volume from vanishing, i.e. restoring in the Minisuperspace analysis its zero value.

Linear perturbations of an anisotropic Bianchi I model with a uniform magnetic field

In this work, we study the effect of a magnetic field on the growth of cosmological perturbations. We develop a mathematical consistent treatment in which a perfect fluid and a uniform magnetic field evolve together in a Bianchi I universe. We then study the energy density perturbations on this background with particular emphasis on the effect of the background magnetic field. We develop a full relativistic solution which refines previous analysis in the relativistic limit, recovers the known ones in the Newtonian treatment with adiabatic sound speed, and it adds anisotropic effects to the relativistic ones for perturbations with wavelength within the Hubble horizon. This represents a refined approach on the perturbation theory of an isotropic universe in GR, since most of the present studies deal with fully isotropic systems.

Scalar modes in extended hybrid metric-Palatini gravity: weak field phenomenology

We investigate the nature of additional scalar degrees of freedom contained in extended hybrid metric-Palatini gravity, outlining the emergence of two coupled dynamical scalar modes. In particular, we discuss the weak field limit of the theory, both in the static case and from a gravitational waves perspective. In the first case, performing an analysis at the lowest order of the post parameterized Newtonian (PPN) structure of the model, we stress the settling of Yukawa corrections to the Newtonian potential. In this respect, we show that one scalar field can have long range interactions and used in the principle for mimicking dark matter effects. Concerning the gravitational waves propagation, instead, we demonstrate that is possible to have well-defined physical degrees of freedom, provided by suitable constraints on model parameters. Moreover, the study of the geodesic deviation points out the presence of breathing and longitudinal polarizations due to these novel scalar waves, which on peculiar assumptions can give rise to beating phenomena during their propagation.

Gauge invariant formulation of gravitational waves in metric $f(R)$ gravity

We analyze the gravitational waves propagation in metric $f(R)$ theories of gravity. In particular, adopting a gauge invariant formalism we clearly determine the exact propagating degrees of freedom. Then, investigating their effects on test masses via geodesic deviation equation, we show that the additional dynamical degree contained in such extended formulations is actually responsible for two distinguished polarizations, corresponding to a breathing and a longitudinal mode, respectively.

Reanalysis of the beam-plasma instability using the Dyson-like equation formalism

We analyze the problem of the beam-plasma instability via the analytical treatment of the so-called Dyson equation. We first compared the prediction of the model constructed by fixing the electric field amplitude with respect to a N-body Hamiltonian numerical simulation. Then, we demonstrate that the shortcomings of such an analytical formulation must be essentially identified with the breaking-down of the self-consistent evolution of the field and the particle distribution function.

Modified Gravitational Waves Across Galaxies from Macroscopic Gravity

We analyze the propagation of gravitational waves in a medium containing bounded subsystems ("molecules"), able to induce significant Macroscopic Gravity effects. We establish a precise constitutive relation between the average quadrupole and the amplitudes of a vacuum gravitational wave, via the geodesic deviation equation. Then we determine the modified equation for the wave inside the medium and the associated dispersion relation. A phenomenological analysis shows that anomalous polarizations of the wave emerge with an appreciable experimental detectability if the medium is identified with a typical galaxy. Both the modified dispersion relation (wave velocity less than the speed of light) and anomalous oscillations modes could be detectable by the incoming LISA or pulsar timing arrays experiments, having the appropriate size to see the concerned wavelengths (larger than the molecular size) and the appropriate sensitivity to detect the expected deviation from vacuum General Relativity.

Resonance overlap and non-linear velocity spread in Hamiltonian beam-plasma systems

We analyze some specific features of the beam-plasma instability. In particular, non-perturbative effects in the dispersion relation are studied when the standard perturbative inverse Landau damping treatment breaks down. We also elucidate how only the global distortion of the profile rather than the clump width is truly predictive of resonance overlap at saturation.

Quasi-linear model for the beam-plasma instability: analysis of the self-consistent evolution

We re-analyze the quasi-linear self consistent dynamics for the beam-plasma instability, by comparing the theory predictions to numerical simulations of the corresponding Hamiltonian system. While the diffusive features of the asymptotic dynamics are reliably predicted, the early temporal mesoscale transport appears less efficient in reproducing the convective feature of the self-consistent scenario. As a result, we identify the origin of the observed discrepancy in the underlying quasi-linear model assumption that the distribution function is quasi-stationary. Furthermore, we provide a correction to the instantaneous quasi-linear growth rate based on a linear expansion of the distribution function time dependence, and we successfully test this revised formulation for the spectral evolution during the temporal mesoscale.

Big Bounce cosmology for Palatini $R^2$ gravity with a Nieh-Yan term

We analyze the cosmological implementation of Palatini $f(R)$ theories, constructed with a Nieh-Yan term and solved with respect to the torsion. We consider the relevant case of the quadratic correction to the Hilbert-Palatini action in the Ricci scalar, mimicking the Starobinsky model of the metric formulation. We point out the emergence of peculiar cosmological scenarios, depending on the sign of such correction, able to reproduce bouncing settings and to restore the standard Universe dynamics in the late asymptotic limit. Furthermore, we outline the settling of Little-Rip dynamics, which calls for a deeper investigation in order to be regularized via matter creation. Finally, we also show that in our model the Immirzi field is asymptotically frozen in time, resembling the morphology of Loop Quantum Gravity standard formulation.

Semi-classical and quantum analysis of the isotropic Universe in the polymer paradigm

We analyse the semi-classical and quantum dynamics of the isotropic Universe in the framework of the Polymer Quantum mechanics, in order to implement a cut-off physics on the initial singularity. We first identify in the Universe cubed scale factor (i.e. the spatial volume) the suitable configuration variable, providing a constant critical energy density, such that the Bounce arises as intrinsic geometric feature. We then investigate the obtained semi-classical Bounce dynamics for the primordial Universe, and we outline its impact on the resolution of cosmological paradoxes, as soon as the semi-classical evolution is extended (in the spirit of the Ehrenfest theorem) to the collapsing pre-Bounce Universe. Finally, we validate the use of the semi-classical effective dynamics by investigating the behaviour of the expectation values of a proper semiclassical states. The present analysis has the merit to enforce the equivalence between the Polymer quantization paradigm in the Minisuperspace and the Loop Quantum Cosmology approach. In fact, our study allows to define a precise correspondence between the Polymer cut-off scale and the discrete geometric structure of LQG.

Implications of the Holst term in a $f(R)$ theory with torsion

We analyze a modified $f(R)$ theory of gravity in the Palatini formulation, when an Holst term endowed with a dynamical Immirzi field is included. We study the basic features of the model, especially in view of liminating the torsion field via the Immirzi field and the scalar-tensor degrees of freedom of the $f(R)$ model. The main task of this study is the investigation of the morphology of the gravitational wave polarization when their coupling to a circle of test particles is considered. We first observe that the dynamics of the scalar mode of the $f(R)$ Lagrangian is frozen out, since its first order term identically vanishes. This allows a detailed characterization of the linearized theory, which outlines the emergence of a modified Newtonian potential in the static limit, and when time independence is relaxed a standard gravitational wave plus the scalar wave associated to the Immirzi field. Investigating the effect of the coupling of this scalar-tensor wave on a circle of test particles, we arrive to define two effective gravitational polarizations, corresponding to an equivalent phenomenological wave, whose morphology is anomalous with respect the standard case of General Relativity. In fact, the particle circle suffers modifications as it was subjected to modified plus and cross modes, whose specific features depend on the model free parameters and are, in principle, detectable via a data analysis procedure.

Singularity-free and non-chaotic inhomogeneous Mixmaster in polymer representation for the volume of the universe

We analyze the semiclassical polymer dynamics of the inhomogeneous Mixmaster model by choosing the cubed scale factor as the discretized configurational variable, while the anisotropies remain pure Einsteinian variables. Such a modified theory of gravity should be regarded as the appropriate framework to describe the behavior of quantum mean values, both in polymer quantum mechanics and in Loop Quantum Cosmology. We first construct the generalized Kasner solution, including a massless scalar field and a cosmological constant in the dynamics. They account for a quasi-isotropization, inflationary-like mechanism. The resulting scenario links a singularity-free Kasner-like regime with a homogeneous and isotropic de Sitter phase. Subsequently, we investigate the role of the three-dimensional scalar curvature, demonstrating that a bounce of the point-universe against the potential walls can always occur within the polymer framework, also in the presence of a scalar field. However, the absence of the singularity implies that the curvature is bounded. Therefore, the point-universe undergoes an oscillatory regime until it oversteps the potential walls (if the Big Bounce is not reached before). After that, a final stable Kasner-like regime will last all the way toward the Big Bounce. Thus, the present study demonstrates that, as soon as a discretization of the volume of the universe is performed, the generic cosmological solution is non-chaotic and free from singularities. It is likely that the same result can be achieved also in the loop quantum cosmology approach.

Semiclassical and quantum behavior of the Mixmaster model in the polymer approach for the isotropic Misner variable

We analyze the semiclassical and quantum behavior of the Bianchi IX Universe in the Polymer Quantum Mechanics framework, applied to the isotropic Misner variable, linked to the space volume of the model. The study is performed both in the Hamiltonian and field equations approaches, leading to the surprising result of a still singular and chaotic cosmology, whose Poincaré return map asymptotically overlaps the standard Belinskii-Khalatnikov-Lifshitz one. In the quantum sector, we reproduce the original analysis due to Misner, within the revised Polymer approach and we arrive to demonstrate that the quantum numbers of the point-Universe still remain constants of motion. This issue confirms the possibility to have quasi-classical states up to the initial singularity. The present study clearly demonstrates that the asymptotic behavior of the Bianchi IX Universe towards the singularity is not significantly affected by the Polymer reformulation of the spatial volume dynamics both on a pure quantum and a semiclassical level.
