On the Self-Propulsion of a Rigid Body in a Viscous Liquid by Time-Periodic Boundary Data

Consider a rigid body, $\mathscr B$, constrained to move by translational motion in an unbounded viscous liquid. The driving mechanism is a given distribution of time-periodic velocity field, $\bfv_*$, at the interface body-liquid, of magnitude $δ$ (in appropriate function class). The main objective is to find conditions on $\bfv_*$ ensuring that $\mathscr B$ performs a non-zero net motion, namely, $\mathscr B$ can cover any given distance in a finite time. The approach to the problem depends on whether the averaged value of $\bfv_*$ over a period of time is (case (b)) or is not (case (a)) identically zero. In case (a) we solve the problem in a relatively straightforward way, by showing that, for small $δ$, it reduces to the study of a suitable amd well-investigated time-dependent Stokes (linear) problem. In case (b), however, the question is much more complicated, because we show that it {\em cannot} be brought to the study of a linear problem. Therefore, in case (b), self-propulsion is a genuinely nonlinear issue that we solve directly on the nonlinear system by a contradiction argument approach. In this way, we are able to give, also in case (b), sufficient conditions for self-propulsion (for small $δ$). Finally, we demonstrate, by means of counterexamples, that such conditions are, in general, also necessary.

Existence, Uniqueness and Asymptotic Behavior of Regular Time-Periodic Viscous Flow around a Moving Body: Rotational Case

We show existence and uniqueness for small data of regular time-periodic solutions to the Navier-Stokes problem in the exterior of a rigid body, $\mathscr B$, that moves by time-periodic translational motion of the same period along a constant direction, $\bfe_1$, and spins with constant angular velocity $\bfomega$ parallel to $\bfe_1$. We also study the spatial asymptotic behavior of such solutions and show, in particular, that if $\mathscr B$ has a net motion characterized by a non-zero average translational velocity $\bar{\bfxi}$, then the solution exhibit a wake-like behavior in the direction $-\bar{\bfxi}$ entirely analogous to that of a steady-state flow around a body that moves with velocity $\bar{\bfxi}$ and angular velocity $\bfomega$.

On the Problem of Steady Bifurcation of a Falling Sphere in a Navier-Stokes Liquid

We study steady bifurcation for the coupled system body-liquid consisting of a sphere freely falling in a Navier-Stokes liquid under the action of gravity. In particular we show that, under the assumption that for the bifurcating solution the translational velocity of the sphere is parallel to the gravity, bifurcation takes place provided 1 is a simple eigenvalue of a suitable linear operator and the transversality property holds.

Existence, Uniqueness and Asymptotic Behavior of Regular Time-Periodic Viscous Flow around a Moving Body

We show existence and uniqueness of regular time-periodic solutions to the Navier-Stokes problem in the exterior of a rigid body, $\mathscr B$, that moves by arbitrary (sufficiently smooth) time-periodic translational motion of the same period, provided the size of the data is suitably restricted. Moreover, we characterize the spatial asymptotic behavior of such solutions and prove, in particular, that if $\mathscr B$ has a nonzero net motion identified by a constant velocity $\bar{\mathbfξ}$ (say), then the solution exhibit a wake-like behavior in the direction $-\bar{\mathbfξ}$ entirely analogous to that of a steady-state flow around a body that moves with velocity $\bar{\mathbfξ}$.

Attainability of Time-Periodic flow of a Viscous Liquid Past an Oscillating Body

A body $\mathscr B$ is started from rest by translational motion in an otherwise quiescent Navier-Stokes liquid filling the whole space. We show, for small data, that if after some time $\mathscr B$ reaches a spinless oscillatory motion of period $\cal T$, the liquid will eventually execute also a time periodic motion with same period $\cal T$. This problem is a suitable generalization of the famous Finn's starting problem for steady-states, to the case of time-periodic motions

New results for the Oseen problem with applications to the Navier-Stokes equations in exterior domains

We prove new existence and uniqueness results in full Sobolev spaces for the steady-state Oseen problem in a smooth exterior domain of $\mathbb{R}^n$, $n\ge 2$. These results are then employed, on the one hand, in the study of analogous properties for the corresponding (linear) time-periodic case and, on the other hand and more significantly, to prove analogous properties for their nonlinear counterpart, at least for small data.

Viscous Flow past a Body Translating by Time-Periodic Motion with Zero Average

We study existence, uniqueness, regularity and asymptotic spatial behavior of a Navier-Stokes flow past a body moving by a time-periodic translational motion of period $T$, and with zero average. For example, $\mathscr B$ moves in an oscillating fashion. The flow is also time-periodic with same period $T$. However, sufficiently ``far" from the body, the oscillatory component decays faster than the averaged component, so that the flow shows there a distinctive steady-state character. This provides a rigorous proof of the ``steady streaming" phenomenon.

Stability and Long-Time Behavior of a Pendulum with an Interior Cavity Filled with a Viscous Liquid

We show asymptotic, exponential stability of the equilibrium configuration, $\smallL$, of a hollow physical pendulum with its inner part entirely filled with a viscous liquid, corresponding to the center of mass being in the lowest position. Moreover, we prove that every weak solution with initial data possessing finite total initial energy and belonging to a "large" open set, becomes eventually smooth and decays exponentially fast to the equilibrium $\smallL$. These results are obtained also as byproduct of a "generalized linearization principle" that we show for evolution equations with non-empty "slow" center manifold.

Stability of Permanent Rotations and Long-Time Behavior of Inertial Motions of a Rigid Body with an Interior Liquid-Filled Cavity

A rigid body, with an interior cavity entirely filled with a Navier-Stokes liquid, moves in absence of external torques relative to the center of mass of the coupled system body-liquid (inertial motions). The only steady-state motions allowed are then those where the system, as a whole rigid body, rotates uniformly around one of the central axes of inertia (permanent rotations). Objective of this article is two-fold. On the one hand, we provide sufficient conditions for the asymptotic, exponential stability of permanent rotations, as well as for their instability. On the other hand, we study the asymptotic behavior of the generic motion in the class of weak solutions and show that there exists a time $t_0$ after that all such solutions must decay exponentially fast to a permanent rotation. This result provides a {\em full} and rigorous explanation of Zhukovsky's conjecture, and explains, likewise, other interesting phenomena that are observed in both lab and numerical experiments.

Time-periodic solutions to the Navier-Stokes equations in the three-dimensional whole-space with a non-zero drift term: Asymptotic profile at spatial infinity

An asymptotic expansion at spatial infinity of a weak time-periodic solution to the Navier-Stokes equations with a non-zero drift term in the three-dimensional whole-space is carried out. The asymptotic profile is explicitly identified and expressed in terms of the well-known Oseen fundamental solution. A pointwise estimate is given for the remainder term.

Time-period flow of a viscous liquid past a body

Time-periodic solutions to the Navier-Stokes equations that govern the flow of a viscous liquid past a three-dimensional body moving with a time-periodic velocity are investigated. The net motion of the body over a full time-period is assumed to be non-zero. In this case the appropriate linearization of the system is constituted by the time-periodic Oseen equations in a three-dimensional exterior domain. A priori Lp estimates are established for this linearization. Based on these estimates, existence of a solution to the fully non-linear Navier-Stokes problem is obtained by the contraction mapping principle.

Strong Time-Periodic Solutions to the 3D Primitive Equations subject to Arbitrary Large Forces

We show that the three-dimensional primitive equations admit a strong time-periodic solution of period $T>0$, provided the forcing term $f\in L^2(0,\mathcal T; L^2(Ω))$ is a time-periodic function of the same period. No restriction on the magnitude of $f$ is assumed. As a corollary, if, in particular, $f$ is time-independent, the corresponding solution is steady-state.

A Time-Periodic Bifurcation Theorem and its Application to Navier-Stokes Flow Past an Obstacle

We show an abstract time-periodic bifurcation theorem in Banach spaces. The key point as well as the novelty of the method is to split the original evolution equation into two different coupled equations, one for the time-average of the sought solution and the other for the "purely periodic" component. This approach may be particularly useful in studying physical phenomena occurring in unbounded spatial regions. Actually, we furnish a significant application of the theorem, by providing sufficient conditions for time-periodic bifurcation from a steady-state flow of a Navier-Stokes liquid past a three-dimensional obstacle.

On Bifurcating Time-Periodic Flow of a Navier-Stokes Liquid past a Cylinder

We provide general sufficient conditions for branching out of a time-periodic family of solutions from steady-state solutions to the two-dimensional Navier-Stokes equations in the exterior of a cylinder. To this end, we first show that the problem can be formulated as a coupled elliptic-parabolic nonlinear system in appropriate function spaces. This is obtained by separating the time-independent averaged component of the velocity field from its "purely periodic" one. We then prove that time-periodic bifurcation occurs, provided the linearized time-independent operator of the parabolic problem possess a simple eigenvalue that crosses the imaginary axis when the Reynolds number passes through a (suitably defined) critical value. We also show that only supercritical or subcritical bifurcation may occur. Our approach is different and, we believe, more direct than those used by previous authors in similar, but distinct, context.

Inertial Motions of a Rigid Body with a cavity filled with a viscous liquid

We study inertial motions of the coupled system, S, constituted by a rigid body containing a cavity that is completely filled with a viscous liquid. We show that for data of arbitrary size (initial kinetic energy and total angular momentum) every weak solution (a la Leray-Hopf) converges, as time goes to infinity, to a uniform rotation, thus proving a famous "conjecture" of Zhukovskii. Moreover we show that, in a wide range of initial data, this rotation must occur along the central axis of inertia of S that has the largest moment of inertia. Furthermore, necessary and sufficient conditions for the rigorous nonlinear stability of permanent rotations are provided, which improve and/or generalize results previously given by other authors under different types of approximation of the original equations and/or suitable symmetry assumptions on the shape of the cavity. Finally, we present a number of results obtained by a targeted numerical simulation that, on the one hand, complement the analytical findings, whereas, on the other hand, point out new features that the analysis is yet not able to catch, and, as such, lay the foundation for interesting and challenging future investigation.

On the Leray-Hopf Extension Condition for the Steady-State Navier-Stokes Problem in Multiply-Connected Bounded Domains

Employing the approach of A. Takeshita [Pacific J. Math., Vol. 157 (1993), 151--158], we give an elementary proof of the invalidity of the Leray-Hopf Extension Condition for certain multiply connected bounded domains of R^n, n=2,3, whenever the flow through the different components of the boundary is non-zero. Our proof is alternative to and, to an extent, more direct than the recent one proposed by J.G. Heywood [J. Math. Fluid Mech. Vol. 13 (2011), 449--457].
