Vector-valued statistics of binomial processes: Berry-Esseen bounds in the convex distance

We study the discrepancy between the distribution of a vector-valued functional of i.i.d. random elements and that of a Gaussian vector. Our main contribution is an explicit bound on the convex distance between the two distributions, holding in every dimension. Such a finding constitutes a substantial extension of the one-dimensional bounds deduced in Chatterjee (2007) and Lachièze-Rey and Peccati (2017), as well as of the multidimensional bounds for smooth test functions and indicators of rectangles derived, respectively, in Dung (2019), and Fang and Koike (2021). Our techniques involve the use of Stein's method, combined with a suitable adaptation of the recursive approach inaugurated by Schulte and Yukich (2017): this yields rates of converge that have a presumably optimal dependence on the sample size. We develop several applications of a geometric nature, among which is a new collection of multidimensional quantitative limit theorems for the intrinsic volumes associated with coverage processes in Euclidean spaces.

The multivariate functional de Jong CLT

We prove a multivariate functional version of de Jong's CLT (1990) yielding that, given a sequence of vectors of Hoeffding-degenerate U-statistics, the corresponding empirical processes on $[0,1]$ weakly converge in the Skorohod space as soon as their fourth cumulants in $t=1$ vanish asymptotically and a certain strengthening of the Lindeberg-type condition is verified. As an application, we lift to the functional level the `universality of Wiener chaos' phenomenon first observed in Nourdin, Peccati and Reinert (2010).

Functional Convergence of Sequential U-processes with Size-Dependent Kernels

We consider sequences of $U$-processes based on symmetric kernels of a fixed order, that possibly depend on the sample size. Our main contribution is the derivation of a set of analytic sufficient conditions, under which the aforementioned $U$-processes weakly converge to a linear combination of time-changed independent Brownian motions. In view of the underlying symmetric structure, the involved time-changes and weights remarkably depend only on the order of the U-statistic, and have consequently a universal nature. Checking these sufficient conditions requires calculations that have roughly the same complexity as those involved in the computation of fourth moments and cumulants. As such, when applied to the degenerate case, our findings are infinite-dimensional extensions of the central limit theorems (CLTs) proved in de Jong (1990) and Döbler and Peccati (2017). As important tools in our analysis, we exploit the multidimensional central limit theorems established in Döbler and Peccati (2019) together with upper bounds on absolute moments of degenerate $U$-statistics by Ibragimov and Sharakhmetov (2002), and also prove some novel multiplication formulae for degenerate symmetric $U$-statistics -- allowing for different sample sizes -- that are of independent interest. We provide applications to random geometric graphs and to a class of $U$-statistics of order two, whose Gaussian fluctuations have been recently studied by Robins et al. (2016), in connection with quadratic estimators in non-parametric models. In particular, our application to random graphs yields a class of new functional central limit theorems for subgraph counting statistics, extending previous findings in the literature. Finally, some connections with invariance principles in changepoint analysis are established.

Infinitesimal Invariance of Completely Random Measures for 2D Euler Equations

We consider suitable weak solutions of 2-dimensional Euler equations on bounded domains, and show that the class of completely random measures is infinitesimally invariant for the dynamics. Space regularity of samples of these random fields falls outside of the well-posedness regime of the PDE under consideration, so it is necessary to resort to stochastic integrals with respect to the candidate invariant measure in order to give a definition of the dynamics. Our findings generalize and unify previous results on Gaussian stationary solutions of Euler equations and point vortex dynamics. We also discuss difficulties arising when attempting to produce a solution flow for Euler's equations preserving independently scattered random measures.

The discrepancy between min-max statistics of Gaussian and Gaussian-subordinated matrices

We compute quantitative bounds for measuring the discrepancy between the distribution of two min-max statistics involving either pairs of Gaussian random matrices, or one Gaussian and one Gaussian-subordinated random matrix. In the fully Gaussian setup, our approach allows us to recover quantitative versions of well-known inequalities by Gordon (1985, 1987, 1992), thus generalising the quantitative version of the Sudakov-Fernique inequality deduced in Chatterjee (2005). On the other hand, the Gaussian-subordinated case yields generalizations of estimates by Chernozhukov et al. (2015) and Koike (2019). As an application, we establish fourth moment bounds for matrices of multiple stochastic Wiener-Itô integrals, that we illustrate with an example having a statistical flavour.

Limit Theorems for Additive Functionals of the Fractional Brownian Motion

We investigate first and second order fluctuations of additive functionals of a fractional Brownian motion (fBm) of the form \begin{align}\label{eq:abstractmain} Z_n=\left\{\int_{0}^{t}f(n^{H}(B_{s}-λ))ds\ ; t\geq 0 \right\} \end{align} where $B=\{B_{t}; t \geq 0\}$ is a fBm with Hurst parameter $H\in (0,1)$, $f$ is a suitable test function and $λ\in \mathbb{R}$. We develop our study by distinguishing two regimes which exhibit different behaviors. When $H\in(0,1/3)$, we show that a suitable renormalization of $Z_n$, compensated by a multiple of the local time of $B$, converges towards a constant multiple of the derivative of the local time of $B$. In contrast, in the case $H\in[1/3,1)$ we show that $Z_n$ converges towards an independent Brownian motion subordinated to the local time of $B$. Our results refine and complement those from the current literature and solve at the same time the critical case $H=1/3$, which had remained open until now.

The fourth moment theorem on the Poisson space

We prove an exact fourth moment bound for the normal approximation of random variables belonging to the Wiener chaos of a general Poisson random measure. Such a result -- that has been elusive for several years -- shows that the so-called `fourth moment phenomenon', first discovered by Nualart and Peccati (2005) in the context of Gaussian fields, also systematically emerges in a Poisson framework. Our main findings are based on Stein's method, Malliavin calculus and Mecke-type formulae, as well as on a methodological breakthrough, consisting in the use of carré-du-champ operators on the Poisson space for controlling residual terms associated with add-one cost operators. Our approach can be regarded as a successful application of Markov generator techniques to probabilistic approximations in a non-diffusive framework: as such, it represents a significant extension of the seminal contributions by Ledoux (2012) and Azmoodeh, Campese and Poly (2014). To demonstrate the flexibility of our results, we also provide some novel bounds for the Gamma approximation of non-linear functionals of a Poisson measure.

Quantitative CLTs for symmetric $U$-statistics using contractions

We consider sequences of symmetric $U$-statistics, not necessarily Hoeffding-degenerate, both in a one- and multi-dimensional setting, and prove quantitative central limit theorems (CLTs) based on the use of {\it contraction operators}. Our results represent an explicit counterpart to analogous criteria that are available for sequences of random variables living on the Gaussian, Poisson or Rademacher chaoses, and are perfectly tailored for geometric applications. As a demonstration of this fact, we develop explicit bounds for subgraph counting in generalised random graphs on Euclidean spaces; special attention is devoted to the so-called `dense parameter regime' for uniformly distributed points, for which we deduce CLTs that are new even in their qualitative statement, and that substantially extend classical findings by Jammalamadaka and Janson (1986) and Bhattacharaya and Ghosh (1992).

Multivariate normal approximation on the Wiener space: new bounds in the convex distance

We establish explicit bounds on the convex distance between the distribution of a vector of smooth functionals of a Gaussian field, and that of a normal vector with a positive definite covariance matrix. Our bounds are commensurate to the ones obtained by Nourdin, Peccati and Réveillac (2010) for the (smoother) 1-Wasserstein distance, and do not involve any additional logarithmic factor. One of the main tools exploited in our work is a recursive estimate on the convex distance recently obtained by Schulte and Yukich (2019). We illustrate our abstract results in two different situations: (i) we prove a quantitative multivariate fourth moment theorem for vectors of multiple Wiener-Itô integrals, and (ii) we characterise the rate of convergence for the finite-dimensional distributions in the functional Breuer-Major theorem.

Malliavin-Stein Method: a Survey of Recent Developments

Initiated around the year 2007, the Malliavin-Stein approach to probabilistic approximations combines Stein's method with infinite-dimensional integration by parts formulae based on the use of Malliavin-type operators. In the last decade, Malliavin-Stein techniques have allowed researchers to establish new quantitative limit theorems in a variety of domains of theoretical and applied stochastic analysis. The aim of this survey is to illustrate some of the latest developments of the Malliavin-Stein method, with specific emphasis on extensions and generalisations in the framework of Markov semigroups and of random point measures.

Brownian Loops, Layering Fields and Imaginary Gaussian Multiplicative Chaos

We study vertex-like operators built from the Brownian loop soup in the limit as the loop soup intensity tends to infinity. More precisely, following Camia, Gandolfi and Kleban (Nuclear Physics B 902, 2016), we take a Brownian loop soup in a planar domain and assign a random sign to each loop. We then consider random fields defined by taking, at every point of the domain, the exponential of a purely imaginary constant times the sum of the signs associated to the loops that wind around that point. As smaller loops are included in the count, that sum diverges logarithmically with the diameter of the loops, but we show that a suitable renormalization procedure allows to define the fields in an appropriate Sobolev space. Subsequently, we let the intensity of the loop soup tend to infinity and prove that these vertex-like fields tend to a conformally covariant random field which can be expressed as an explicit functional of the imaginary Gaussian multiplicative chaos with covariance kernel given by the Brownian loop measure. Besides using properties of the Brownian loop soup and the Brownian loop measure, a main tool in our analysis is an explicit Wiener-Itô chaos expansion of linear functionals of vertex-like fields.

Quantitative two-scale stabilization on the Poisson space

We establish inequalities for assessing the distance between the distribution of a (possibly multidimensional) functional of a Poisson random measure and that of a Gaussian element. Our bounds only involve add-one cost operators at the order one - that we evaluate and compare at two different scales - and are specifically tailored for studying the Gaussian fluctuations of sequences of geometric functionals displaying a form of weak stabilization - see Penrose and Yukich (2001) and Penrose (2005). Our main bounds extend the estimates recently exploited by Chatterjee and Sen (2017) in the proof of a quantitative version of the central limit theorem (CLT) for the length of the Poisson-based Euclidean minimal spanning tree (MST). We develop in full detail three applications of our bounds, namely: (i) to a quantitative multidimensional spatial CLT for functionals of the on-line nearest neighbor graph, (ii) to a quantitative multidimensional CLT involving functionals of the empirical measure associated with the edge-length of the Euclidean MST, and (iii) to a collection of multidimensional CLTs for geometric functionals of the excursion set of heavy-tailed shot noise random fields. Application (i) is based on a collection of general probabilistic approximations for strongly stabilizing functionals, that is of independent interest.

Small Scale CLTs for the Nodal Length of Monochromatic Waves

We consider the nodal length $L(λ)$ of the restriction to a ball of radius $r_λ$ of a {\it Gaussian pullback monochromatic random wave} of parameter $λ>0$ associated with a Riemann surface $(\mathcal M,g)$ without conjugate points. Our main result is that, if $r_λ$ grows slower than $(\log λ)^{1/25}$, then (as $λ\to \infty$) the length $L(λ)$ verifies a Central Limit Theorem with the same scaling as Berry's random wave model -- as established in Nourdin, Peccati and Rossi (2019). Taking advantage of some powerful extensions of an estimate by Bérard (1986) due to Keeler (2019), our techniques are mainly based on a novel intrinsic bound on the coupling of smooth Gaussian fields, that is of independent interest, and moreover allow us to improve some estimates for the nodal length asymptotic variance of pullback random waves in Canzani and Hanin (2016). In order to demonstrate the flexibility of our approach, we also provide an application to phase transitions for the nodal length of arithmetic random waves on shrinking balls of the $2$-torus.

Transport inequalities for random point measures

We derive transport-entropy inequalities for mixed binomial point processes, and for Poisson point processes. We show that when the finite intensity measure satisfies a Talagrand transport inequality, the law of the point process also satisfies a Talagrand type transport inequality. We also show that a Poisson point process (with arbitrary $σ$-finite intensity measure) always satisfies a universal transport-entropy inequality à la Marton. We explore the consequences of these inequalities in terms of concentration of measure and modified logarithmic Sobolev inequalities. In particular, our results allow one to extend a deviation inequality by Reitzner [31], originally proved for Poisson random measures with finite mass.

Gaussian Random Measures Generated by Berry's Nodal Sets

We consider vectors of random variables, obtained by restricting the length of the nodal set of Berry's random wave model to a finite collection of (possibly overlapping) smooth compact subsets of $\mathbb{R}^2$. Our main result shows that, as the energy diverges to infinity and after an adequate normalisation, these random elements converge in distribution to a Gaussian vector, whose covariance structure reproduces that of a homogeneous independently scattered random measure. A by-product of our analysis is that, when restricted to rectangles, the dominant chaotic projection of the nodal length field weakly converges to a standard Wiener sheet, in the Banach space of real-valued continuous mappings over a fixed compact set. An analogous study is performed for complex-valued random waves, in which case the nodal set is a locally finite collection of random points.

The Breuer-Major Theorem in total variation: improved rates under minimal regularity

In this paper we prove an estimate for the total variation distance, in the framework of the Breuer-Major theorem, using the Malliavin-Stein method, assuming the underlying function $g$ to be once weakly differentiable with $g$ and $g'$ having finite moments of order four with respect to the standard Gaussian density. This result is proved by a combination of Gebelein's inequality and some novel estimates involving Malliavin operators.

Berry-Esseen bounds in the Breuer-Major CLT and Gebelein's inequality

We derive explicit Berry-Esseen bounds in the total variation distance for the Breuer-Major central limit theorem, in the case of a subordinating function $φ$ satisfying minimal regularity assumptions. Our approach is based on the combination of the Malliavin-Stein approach for normal approximations with Gebelein's inequality, bounding the covariance of functionals of Gaussian fields in terms of maximal correlation coefficients.

Restricted hypercontractivity on the Poisson space

We show that the Ornstein-Uhlenbeck semigroup associated with a general Poisson random measure is hypercontractive, whenever it is restricted to non-increasing mappings on configuration spaces. We deduce from this result some versions of Talagrand's $L^1$-$L^2$ inequality for increasing and concave mappings, and we build examples showing that such an estimate represents a strict improvement of the classical Poincaré inequality. We complement our finding with several results of independent interest, such as gradient estimates.
