Fine Gaussian fluctuations on the Poisson space, I: contractions, cumulants and geometric random graphs

We study the normal approximation of functionals of Poisson measures having the form of a finite sum of multiple integrals. When the integrands are nonnegative, our results yield necessary and sufficient conditions for central limit theorems. These conditions can always be expressed in terms of contraction operators or, equivalently, fourth cumulants. Our findings are specifically tailored to deal with the normal approximation of the geometric $U$-statistics introduced by Reitzner and Schulte (2011). In particular, we shall provide a new analytic characterization of geometric random graphs whose edge-counting statistics exhibit asymptotic Gaussian fluctuations, and describe a new form of Poisson convergence for stationary random graphs with sparse connections. In a companion paper, the above analysis is extended to general $U$-statistics of marked point processes with possibly rescaled kernels.

Exchangeable Hoeffding decompositions over finite sets: a characterization and counterexamples

We study Hoeffding decomposable exchangeable sequences with values in a finite set D. We provide a new combinatorial characterization of Hoeffding decomposability and use this result to show that, if the cardinality of D is strictly greater than 2, then there exists a class of neither Pólya nor i.i.d. D-valued exchangeable sequences that are Hoeffding decomposable. The construction of such sequences is based on some ideas appearing in Hill, Lane and Sudderth [1987] and answers a question left open in El-Dakkak and Peccati [2008].

The Chen-Stein method for Poisson functionals

We establish a general inequality on the Poisson space, yielding an upper bound for the distance in total variation between the law of a regular random variable with values in the integers and a Poisson distribution. Several applications are provided, in particular: (i) to deduce a set of sufficient conditions implying that a sequence of (suitably shifted) multiple Wiener-Itô integrals converges in distribution to a Poisson random variable, and (ii) to compute explicit rates of convergence for the Poisson approximation of statistics associated with geometric random graphs with sparse connections (thus refining some findings by Lachièze-Rey and Peccati (2011)). This is the first paper studying Poisson approximations on configuration spaces by combining the Malliavin calculus of variations and the Chen-Stein method.

Universal Gaussian fluctuations on the discrete Poisson chaos

We prove that homogenous sums inside a fixed discrete Poisson chaos are universal with respect to normal approximations. This result parallels some recent findings, in a Gaussian context, by Nourdin, Peccati and Reinert (2010). As a by-product of our analysis, we provide some refinements of the CLTs for random variables on the Poisson space proved by Peccati, Solé, Taqqu and Utzet (2010), and by Peccati and Zheng (2010).

Optimal Berry-Esseen rates on the Wiener space: the barrier of third and fourth cumulants

Let {F_n} be a normalized sequence of random variables in some fixed Wiener chaos associated with a general Gaussian field, and assume that E[F_n^4] --> E[N^4]=3, where N is a standard Gaussian random variable. Our main result is the following general bound: there exist two finite constants c,C>0 such that, for n sufficiently large, c max(|E[F_n^3]|, E[F_n^4]-3) < d(F_n,N) < C max(|E[F_n^3]|, E[F_n^4]-3), where d(F_n,N) = sup |E[h(F_n)] - E[h(N)]|, and h runs over the class of all real functions with a second derivative bounded by 1. This shows that the deterministic sequence max(|E[F_n^3]|, E[F_n^4]-3) completely characterizes the rate of convergence (with respect to smooth distances) in CLTs involving chaotic random variables. These results are used to determine optimal rates of convergence in the Breuer-Major central limit theorem, with specific emphasis on fractional Gaussian noise.

Multidimensional semicircular limits on the free Wigner chaos

We show that, for sequences of vectors of multiple Wigner integrals with respect to a free Brownian motion, componentwise convergence to semicircular is equivalent to joint convergence. This result extends to the free probability setting some findings by Peccati and Tudor (2005), and represents a multidimensional counterpart of a limit theorem inside the free Wigner chaos established by Kemp, Nourdin, Peccati and Speicher (2011).

Invariance principles for homogeneous sums: Universality of Gaussian Wiener chaos

We compute explicit bounds in the normal and chi-square approximations of multilinear homogenous sums (of arbitrary order) of general centered independent random variables with unit variance. In particular, we show that chaotic random variables enjoy the following form of universality: (a) the normal and chi-square approximations of any homogenous sum can be completely characterized and assessed by first switching to its Wiener chaos counterpart, and (b) the simple upper bounds and convergence criteria available on the Wiener chaos extend almost verbatim to the class of homogeneous sums.

Quantitative Breuer-Major Theorems

We consider sequences of random variables of the type $S_n= n^{-1/2} \sum_{k=1}^n \{f(X_k)-\E[f(X_k)]\}$, $n\geq 1$, where $X=(X_k)_{k\in \Z}$ is a $d$-dimensional Gaussian process and $f: \R^d \rightarrow \R$ is a measurable function. It is known that, under certain conditions on $f$ and the covariance function $r$ of $X$, $S_n$ converges in distribution to a normal variable $S$. In the present paper we derive several explicit upper bounds for quantities of the type $|\E[h(S_n)] -\E[h(S)]|$, where $h$ is a sufficiently smooth test function. Our methods are based on Malliavin calculus, on interpolation techniques and on the Stein's method for normal approximation. The bounds deduced in our paper depend only on $Var[f^2(X_1)]$ and on simple infinite series involving the components of $r$. In particular, our results generalize and refine some classic CLTs by Breuer-Major, Giraitis-Surgailis and Arcones, concerning the normal approximation of partial sums associated with Gaussian-subordinated time-series.

Multi-dimensional Gaussian fluctuations on the Poisson space

We study multi-dimensional normal approximations on the Poisson space by means of Malliavin calculus, Stein's method and probabilistic interpolations. Our results yield new multi-dimensional central limit theorems for multiple integrals with respect to Poisson measures -- thus significantly extending previous works by Peccati, Solé, Taqqu and Utzet. Several explicit examples (including in particular vectors of linear and non-linear functionals of Ornstein-Uhlenbeck Lévy processes) are discussed in detail.

Second order Poincaré inequalities and CLTs on Wiener space

We prove infinite-dimensional second order Poincaré inequalities on Wiener space, thus closing a circle of ideas linking limit theorems for functionals of Gaussian fields, Stein's method and Malliavin calculus. We provide two applications: (i) to a new "second order" characterization of CLTs on a fixed Wiener chaos, and (ii) to linear functionals of Gaussian-subordinated fields.

Universal Gaussian fluctuations of non-Hermitian matrix ensembles: from weak convergence to almost sure CLTs

In the paper [25], written in collaboration with Gesine Reinert, we proved a universality principle for the Gaussian Wiener chaos. In the present work, we aim at providing an original example of application of this principle in the framework of random matrix theory. More specifically, by combining the result in [25] with some combinatorial estimates, we are able to prove multi-dimensional central limit theorems for the spectral moments (of arbitrary degrees) associated with random matrices with real-valued i.i.d. entries, satisfying some appropriate moment conditions. Our approach has the advantage of yielding, without extra effort, bounds over classes of smooth (i.e., thrice differentiable) functions, and it allows to deal directly with discrete distributions. As a further application of our estimates, we provide a new "almost sure central limit theorem", involving logarithmic means of functions of vectors of traces.

Stein's method and exact Berry--Esseen asymptotics for functionals of Gaussian fields

We show how to detect optimal Berry--Esseen bounds in the normal approximation of functionals of Gaussian fields. Our techniques are based on a combination of Malliavin calculus, Stein's method and the method of moments and cumulants, and provide de facto local (one-term) Edgeworth expansions. The findings of the present paper represent a further refinement of the main results proven in Nourdin and Peccati [Probab. Theory Related Fields 145 (2009) 75--118]. Among several examples, we discuss three crucial applications: (i) to Toeplitz quadratic functionals of continuous-time stationary processes (extending results by Ginovyan [Probab. Theory Related Fields 100 (1994) 395--406] and Ginovyan and Sahakyan [Probab. Theory Related Fields 138 (2007) 551--579]); (ii) to ``exploding'' quadratic functionals of a Brownian sheet; and (iii) to a continuous-time version of the Breuer--Major CLT for functionals of a fractional Brownian motion.

Ergodicity and Gaussianity for Spherical Random Fields

We investigate the relationship between ergodicity and asymptotic Gaussianity of isotropic spherical random fields, in the high-resolution (or high-frequency) limit. In particular, our results suggest that under a wide variety of circumstances the two conditions are equivalent, i.e. the sample angular power spectrum may converge to the population value if and only if the underlying field is asymptotically Gaussian, in the high frequency sense. These findings may shed some light on the role of Cosmic Variance in Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) radiation data analysis.

Cumulants on the Wiener Space

We combine infinite-dimensional integration by parts procedures with a recursive relation on moments (reminiscent of a formula by Barbour (1986)), and deduce explicit expressions for cumulants of functionals of a general Gaussian field. These findings yield a compact formula for cumulants on a fixed Wiener chaos, virtually replacing the usual "graph/diagram computations" adopted in most of the probabilistic literature.

Universal Gaussian fluctuations of non-Hermitian matrix ensembles

We prove multi-dimensional central limit theorems for the spectral moments (of arbitrary degrees) associated with random matrices with real-valued i.i.d. entries, satisfying some appropriate moment conditions. Our techniques rely on a universality principle for the Gaussian Wiener chaos, recently proved by the authors together with Gesine Reinert, as well as on some combinatorial estimates. Unlike other related results in the probabilistic literature, we do not require that the law of the entries has a density with respect to the Lebesgue measure. In particular, our results apply to the ensemble of Bernoulli random matrices.

Stein's method meets Malliavin calculus: a short survey with new estimates

We provide an overview of some recent techniques involving the Malliavin calculus of variations and the so-called ``Stein's method'' for the Gaussian approximations of probability distributions. Special attention is devoted to establishing explicit connections with the classic method of moments: in particular, we use interpolation techniques in order to deduce some new estimates for the moments of random variables belonging to a fixed Wiener chaos. As an illustration, a class of central limit theorems associated with the quadratic variation of a fractional Brownian motion is studied in detail.

Noncentral convergence of multiple integrals

Fix $ν>0$, denote by $G(ν/2)$ a Gamma random variable with parameter $ν/2$ and let $n\geq2$ be a fixed even integer. Consider a sequence $\{F_k\}_{k\geq1}$ of square integrable random variables belonging to the $n$th Wiener chaos of a given Gaussian process and with variance converging to $2ν$. As $k\to\infty$, we prove that $F_k$ converges in distribution to $2G(ν/2)-ν$ if and only if $E(F_k^4)-12E(F_k^3)\to12ν^2-48ν$.
