Running-coupling effects in the triple-differential charmless semileptonic decay width

We compute the fully-differential B -> X_u l nu decay width to all orders in perturbation theory in the large-beta0 limit. Each of the five structure functions that build the hadronic tensor is expressed as a Borel integral, summing up O(CF beta0^{n-1} alpha_s^n) corrections for any n. We derive analytic expressions for the Borel transforms of both real and virtual diagrams with a single dressed gluon, and perform an all-order infrared subtraction, where the Borel parameter serves also as an infrared regulator. Expanding the result we recover the known triple-differential NLO coefficient, and obtain an explicit expression for the O(CF beta0 alpha_s^2) triple-differential NNLO correction. This result can be used to improve the determination of |V_{ub}| from inclusive B -> X_u l nu measurements at the B factories with a variety of kinematic cuts.

A Positive-Weight Next-to-Leading-Order Monte Carlo for Z Pair Hadroproduction

We present a first application of a previously published method for the computation of QCD processes that is accurate at next-to-leading order, and that can be interfaced consistently to standard shower Monte Carlo programs. We have considered Z pair production in hadron-hadron collisions, a process whose complexity is sufficient to test the general applicability of the method. We have interfaced our result to the HERWIG and PYTHIA shower Monte Carlo programs. Previous work on next-to-leading order corrections in a shower Monte Carlo (the MC@NLO program) may involve the generation of events with negative weights, that are avoided with the present method. We have compared our results with those obtained with MC@NLO, and found remarkable consistency. Our method can also be used as a standalone, alternative implementation of QCD corrections, with the advantage of positivity, improved convergence, and next-to-leading logarithmic accuracy in the region of small transverse momentum of the radiated parton.

Borel resummation of soft gluon radiation and higher twists

We show that the well-known divergence of the perturbative expansion of resummed results for processes such as deep-inelastic scattering and Drell-Yan in the soft limit can be treated by Borel resummation. The divergence in the Borel inversion can be removed by the inclusion of suitable higher twist terms. This provides us with an alternative to the standard 'minimal prescription' for the asymptotic summation of the perturbative expansion, and it gives us some handle on the role of higher twist corrections in the soft resummation region.

Renormalization group approach to Sudakov resummation in prompt photon production

We prove the all-order exponentiation of soft logarithmic corrections to prompt photon production in hadronic collisions, by generalizing an approach previously developed in the context of Drell-Yan production and deep-inelastic scattering. We show that all large logs in the soft limit can be expressed in terms of two dimensionful variables, and we use the renormalization group to resum them. The resummed results that we obtain are more general though less predictive than those proposed by other groups, in that they can accommodate for violations of Sudakov factorization.

Renormalization group approach to soft gluon resummation

We present a simple proof of the all-order exponentiation of soft logarithmic corrections to hard processes in perturbative QCD. Our argument is based on proving that all large logs in the soft limit can be expressed in terms of a single dimensionful variable, and then using the renormalization group to resum them. Beyond the next-to-leading log level, our result is somewhat less predictive than previous all-order resummation formulae, but it does not rely on non-standard factorization, and it is thus possibly more general. We use our result to settle issues of convergence of the resummed series, we discuss scheme dependence at the resummed level, and we provide explicit resummed expressions in various factorization schemes.

On the metastability of the Standard Model vacuum

If the Higgs mass m_H is as low as suggested by present experimental information, the Standard Model ground state might not be absolutely stable. We present a detailed analysis of the lower bounds on m_H imposed by the requirement that the electroweak vacuum be sufficiently long-lived. We perform a complete one-loop calculation of the tunnelling probability at zero temperature, and we improve it by means of two-loop renormalization-group equations. We find that, for m_H=115 GeV, the Higgs potential develops an instability below the Planck scale for m_t>(166\pm 2) GeV, but the electroweak vacuum is sufficiently long-lived for m_t < (175\pm 2) \GeV.

Polarized parton distributions from charged-current deep-inelastic scattering and future neutrino factories

We discuss the determination of polarized parton distributions from charged-current deep-inelastic scattering experiments. We summarize the next-to-leading order treatment of charged-current polarized structure functions, their relation to polarized parton distributions and scale dependence, and discuss their description by means of a next-to-leading order evolution code. We discuss current theoretical expectations and positivity constraints on the unmeasured C-odd combinations Delta q-Delta qbar of polarized quark distributions, and their determination in charged-current deep-inelastic scattering experiments. We give estimates of the expected errors on charged-current structure functions at a future neutrino factory, and perform a study of the accuracy in the determination of polarized parton distributions that would be possible at such a facility. We show that these measurements have the potential to distinguish between different theoretical scenarios for the proton spin structure.

Evolution of truncated moments of singlet parton distributions

We define truncated Mellin moments of parton distributions by restricting the integration range over the Bjorken variable to the experimentally accessible subset x_0 < x < 1 of the allowed kinematic range 0 < x < 1. We derive the evolution equations satisfied by truncated moments in the general (singlet) case in terms of an infinite triangular matrix of anomalous dimensions which couple each truncated moment to all higher moments with orders differing by integers. We show that the evolution of any moment can be determined to arbitrarily good accuracy by truncating the system of coupled moments to a sufficiently large but finite size, and show how the equations can be solved in a way suitable for numerical applications. We discuss in detail the accuracy of the method in view of applications to precision phenomenology.

Signatures of massive sgoldstinos at e+e- colliders

In supersymmetric extensions of the Standard Model with a very light gravitino, the effective theory at the weak scale should contain not only the goldstino G, but also its supersymmetric partners, the sgoldstinos. In the simplest case, the goldstino is a gauge-singlet and its superpartners are two neutral spin-0 particles, S and P. We study possible signals of massive sgoldstinos at e+e- colliders, focusing on those that are most relevant at LEP energies. We show that the LEP constraints on e+e- => photon+S (photon+P), Z+S (Z+P) or e+e-S (e+e-P), followed by S (P) decaying into two gluon jets, can lead to stringent combined bounds on the gravitino and sgoldstino masses.

We study possible signals of massive sgoldstinos at hadron colliders, focusing on those that are most relevant for the Tevatron. We show that inclusive production of sgoldstinos, followed by their decay into two photons, can lead to observable signals or to stringent combined bounds on the gravitino and sgoldstino masses. Sgoldstino decays into two gluon jets may provide a useful complementary signature.

Are Parton Distributions Positive?

We show that the naive positivity conditions on polarized parton distributions which follow from their probabilistic interpretation in the naive parton model are reproduced in perturbative QCD at the leading log level if the quark and gluon distribution are defined in terms of physical processes. We show how these conditions are modified at the next-to-leading level, and discuss their phenomenological implications, in particular in view of the determination of the polarized gluon distribution

What Can We Learn From Polarized Structure Function Data?

We summarise the perturbative QCD analysis of the structure function data for g_1 from longitudinally polarized deep inelastic scattering from proton, deuteron and neutron targets, with particular emphasis on testing sum rules, determining helicity fractions, and extracting the strong coupling from both scaling violations and the Bjorken sum rule.

Determination of the Bjorken Sum and Strong Coupling from Polarized Structure Functions

We present a NLO perturbative analysis of all available data on the polarized structure function g_1(x,Q^2) with the aim of making a quantitative test of the validity of the Bjorken sum rule, of measuring α_s, and of deriving helicity fractions. We take particular care over the small x extrapolation, since it is now known that Regge behaviour is unreliable at perturbative scales. For fixed α_s we find that if all the most recent data are included g_A=1.18\pm0.09, confirming the Bjorken sum rule at the 8% level. We further show that the value of α_s is now reasonably well constrained by scaling violations in the structure function data, despite the fact that it cannot yet be reliably fixed by the value of the Bjorken sum: our final result is α_s(m_Z) = 0.120+0.010-0.008. We also confirm earlier indications of a sizeable positive gluon polarization in the nucleon.

Spin effects in lepton-nucleon scattering: a theoretical overview

I review recent theoretical results on polarized deep inelastic lepton nucleon scattering. Some specific issues, like $Q^2$ evolution of structure functions, the small $x$ behaviour, and the determination of polarized parton densities, are discussed in some detail.

Measurement of the Polarized Structure Function g_1^p at HERA

We present estimates of possible data on spin-dependent asymmetries in inclusive scattering of high energy polarized electrons by high energy polarized protons at HERA, including statistical errors, and discuss systematic uncertainties. We show that these data would shed light on the small x behaviour of the polarized structure function g_1, and would reduce substantially the uncertainty on the determination of the polarized gluon distribution.

We extract the first moment of the polarized quark and gluon distribution and assess the corresponding uncertainties, with special regard to those related to scheme dependence.

Possible dynamical determination of $m_t$, $m_b$ and $m_τ

Motivated by four-dimensional superstring models, we consider the possibility of treating the Yukawa couplings of the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM) as dynamical variables of the effective theory at the electroweak scale. Assuming bottom-tau unification, we concentrate on the top and bottom Yukawa couplings, and find that minimizing the effective potential drives them close to an effective infrared fixed line. Requiring an acceptable bottom-top mass ratio leads in principle to an additional constraint on the MSSM parameter space. As a by-product, we give new approximate analytical solutions of the renormalization group equations for the MSSM parameters.

On the Determination of the Gluon Density of the Proton from Heavy-Flavour Production at HERA

Using a recent next-to-leading-order calculation of the photoproduction double differential cross section for heavy quarks, we study the possibility of extracting the gluon density of the proton from heavy-quark photoproduction data. We discuss the theoretical uncertainties connected with this method, and we conclude that they are well under control in a wide $x$ domain.
