Non-local approximation of the Griffith functional

An approximation, in the sense of $Γ$-convergence and in any dimension $d\geq1$, of Griffith-type functionals, with $p-$growth ($p>1$) in the symmetrized gradient, is provided by means of a sequence of non-local integral functionals depending on the average of the symmetrized gradients on small balls.

Nucleation and growth of lattice crystals

A variational lattice model is proposed to define an evolution of sets from a single point (nucleation) following a criterion of "maximization" of the perimeter. At a discrete level, the evolution has a "checkerboard" structure and its shape is affected by the choice of the norm defining the dissipation term. For every choice of the scales, the convergence of the discrete scheme to a family of expanding sets with constant velocity is proved.

A derivation of Griffith functionals from discrete finite-difference models

We analyze a finite-difference approximation of a functional of Ambrosio-Tortorelli type in brittle fracture, in the discrete-to-continuum limit. In a suitable regime between the competing scales, namely if the discretization step $δ$ is smaller than the ellipticity parameter $\varepsilon$, we show the $Γ$-convergence of the model to the Griffith functional, containing only a term enforcing Dirichlet boundary conditions and no $L^p$ fidelity term. Restricting to two dimensions, we also address the case in which a (linearized) constraint of non-interpenetration of matter is added in the limit functional, in the spirit of a recent work by Chambolle, Conti and Francfort.

Relaxation of nonlinear elastic energies related to Orlicz-Sobolev nematic elastomers

We compute the relaxation of the total energy related to a variational model for nematic elastomers, involving a nonlinear elastic mechanical energy depending on the orientation of the molecules of the nematic elastomer, and a nematic Oseen--Frank energy in the deformed configuration. The main assumptions are that the quasiconvexification of the mechanical term is polyconvex and that the deformation belongs to an Orlicz-Sobolev space with an integrability just above the space dimension minus one, and does not present cavitation. We benefit from the fine properties of orientation-preserving maps satisfying that regularity requirement proven in \cite{HS} and extend the result of \cite{MCOl} to Orlicz spaces with a suitable growth condition at infinity.

A variational approach to the quasistatic limit of viscous dynamic evolutions in finite dimension

In this paper we study the vanishing inertia and viscosity limit of a second order system set in an Euclidean space, driven by a possibly nonconvex time-dependent potential satisfying very general assumptions. By means of a variational approach, we show that the solutions of the singularly perturbed problem converge to a curve of stationary points of the energy and characterize the behavior of the limit evolution at jump times. At those times, the left and right limits of the evolution are connected by a finite number of heteroclinic solutions to the unscaled equation.

Motion of discrete interfaces on the triangular lattice

We study the motion of discrete interfaces driven by ferromagnetic interactions on the two-dimensional triangular lattice by coupling the Almgren, Taylor and Wang minimizing movements approach and a discrete-to-continuum analysis, as introduced by Braides, Gelli and Novaga in the pioneering case of the square lattice. We examine the motion of origin-symmetric convex "Wulff-like" hexagons, i.e. origin-symmetric convex hexagons with sides having the same orientations as those of the hexagonal Wulff shape related to the density of the anisotropic perimeter $Γ$-limit of the ferromagnetic energies as the lattice spacing vanishes. We compare the resulting limit motion with the corresponding evolution by crystalline curvature with natural mobility.

Multiscale analysis of singularly perturbed finite dimensional gradient flows: the minimizing movement approach

We perform a convergence analysis of a discrete-in-time minimization scheme approximating a finite dimensional singularly perturbed gradient flow. We allow for different scalings between the viscosity parameter $\varepsilon$ and the time scale $τ$. When the ratio $\frac{\varepsilon}τ$ diverges, we rigorously prove the convergence of this scheme to a (discontinuous) Balanced Viscosity solution of the quasistatic evolution problem obtained as formal limit, when $\varepsilon\to 0$, of the gradient flow. We also characterize the limit evolution corresponding to an asymptotically finite ratio between the scales, which is of a different kind. In this case, a discrete interfacial energy is optimized at jump times.

Chirality transitions in frustrated ferromagnetic spin chains: a link with the gradient theory of phase transitions

We study chirality transitions in frustrated ferromagnetic spin chains, in view of a possible connection with the theory of Liquid Crystals. A variational approach to the study of these systems has been recently proposed by Cicalese and Solombrino, focusing close to the helimagnet-ferromagnet transition point corresponding to the critical value of the frustration parameter $α=4$. We reformulate this problem for any $α\geq0$ in the framework of surface energies in nonconvex discrete systems with nearest neighbors ferromagnetic and next-to-nearest neighbors antiferromagnetic interactions and we link it to the gradient theory of phase transitions, by showing a uniform equivalence by $Γ$-convergence on $[0,4]$ with Modica-Mortola type functionals.

Delayed loss of stability in singularly perturbed finite-dimensional gradient flows

In this paper we study the singular vanishing-viscosity limit of a gradient flow in a finite dimensional Hilbert space, focusing on the so-called delayed loss of stability of stationary solutions. We find a class of time-dependent energy functionals and initial conditions for which we can explicitly calculate the first discontinuity time $t^*$ of the limit. For our class of functionals, $t^*$ coincides with the blow-up time of the solutions of the linearized system around the equilibrium, and is in particular strictly greater than the time $t_c$ where strict local minimality with respect to the driving energy gets lost. Moreover, we show that, in a right neighborhood of $t^*$, rescaled solutions of the singularly perturbed problem converge to heteroclinic solutions of the gradient flow. Our results complement the previous ones by Zanini, where the situation we consider was excluded by assuming the so-called transversality conditions, and the limit evolution consisted of strict local minimizers of the energy up to a negligible set of times.
