Parent-bilinear Sea-boson Correspondence with Spin

This is a sort of tutorial where we present many of the tedious details involved in deriving the correspondence between the number conserving product of two fermi/bose fields with spin and the corresponding sea/condensate displacements also with spin. This time we include finite temperature effects differently by coupling the sea-bosons to an inhomogeneous chemical potential. It is shown that many of the salient features of the free theory are reproduced properly by this approach. An attempt is made to be as detailed as possible, this includes providing formulas for the sea-bosons as well as computing the finite temperature Fermi correlators.

Single-Particle Green Functions in Exactly Solvable Models of Bose and Fermi Liquids

Based on a class of exactly solvable models of interacting bose and fermi liquids, we compute the single-particle propagators of these systems exactly for all wavelengths and energies and in any number of spatial dimensions. The field operators are expressed in terms of bose fields that correspond to displacements of the condensate in the bose case and displacements of the fermi sea in the fermi case. Unlike some of the previous attempts, the present attempt reduces the answer for the spectral function in any dimension in both fermi and bose systems to quadratures. It is shown that when only the lowest order sea-displacement terms are included, the random phase approximation in its many guises is recovered in the fermi case, and Bogoliubov's theory in the bose case. The momentum distribution is evaluated using two different approaches, exact diagonalisation and the equation of motion approach. The novelty being of course, the exact computation of single-particle properties including short wavelength behaviour.

Expressing the Field Operator in Terms of Currents and Densities

A formula is written down for the annhilation operator(bose or fermi) in terms of the corresponding observable bilinears namely currents and densities. The Fock space representation of these formulas is clarified. A conjecture is written down that shows that such a correspondence is unique.

Exact Optical Dielectric Function of a Nearly Homogeneous Solid

Based on an exactly solvable model of a nearly homogeneous solid (jellium+phonons), we compute the optical dielectric function exactly at zero temperature in any number of spatial dimensions. It is argued as we have done elsewhere, that the answer for the optical dielectric function we obtain is in fact the exact answer for a real nearly homogeneous solid in the same limit in which RPA itself is exact.

Fermi-Bose Correspondence at Finite Temperature

The correspondence between fermi-sea/bose-condensate displacements and the number-conserving product of two fermi/bose fields is generalised to finite temperatures. It is shown that the straightforward generalisation that involves making the sea-bosons participate in the thermodynamic averaging does not work out. A remedy is found which involves treating the sea-displacement bosons at zero temperature while all finite temperature effects have to be lumped into the coefficients. We also show that all the finite temperature dynamical four-point and six-point functions come out correctly as do some of the commutation rules involving the fermion/boson product that go through unscathed. It is also shown that this unusual prescription of leaving out the sea-bosons from the thermodynamic averaging does in fact reproduce the correct RPA dielectric function at finite temperature. This article is not however, critic-proof.

Exact Momentum Distribution of a Fermi Gas in One Dimension

We introduce an exactly solvable model of a fermi gas in one dimension and compute the momentum distribution exactly. This is based on a generalisation of the ideas of bosonization in one dimension. It is shown that in the RPA limit(the ultra-high density limit) the answers we get are the exact answers for a homogeneous fermi gas interacting via a two-body repulsive coulomb interaction. Furthermore, the solution may be obtained exactly for arbitrary functional forms of the interaction, so long as it is purely repulsive. No linearization of the bare fermion dispersion is required. We find that for the interaction considered, the fermi surface is intact for weak repulsion and is destroyed only for sufficiently strong repulsion. Comparison with other models like the supersymmetric t-J model with inverse square interactions is made.

Expressing Products of Fermi Fields in terms of Fermi Sea Displacements

An attempt is made to generalise the ideas introduced by Haldane and others regarding Bosonizing the Fermi surface. The present attempt involves introduction of Bose fields that correspond to displacements of the Fermi sea rather than just the Fermi surface. This enables the study of short wavelength fluctuations of the Fermi surface and hence the dispersion of single particle excitations with high energy. The number conserving product of two Fermi fields is represented as a simple combination of these Bose fields. It is shown that most(!) commutation rules involving these number conserving products are reproduced exactly, as are the dynamical correlation functions of the free theory. Also the work of Sharp, Menikoff and Goldin has shown that the field operator may be viewed as a unitary representation of the current algebra. An explicit realisation of this unitary representation is given in terms of canonical conjugate of the density operator.

Exact Dynamical Structure Factor of a Bose Liquid

Based on ideas introduced in a previous preprint cond-mat/9701206 we propose an exactly solvable model of bosons interacting amongst themselves via a Van-der Waal-like repulsive interaction, and compute both the filling fraction and the dynamical structure factor exactly. The novelty of this approach involves introducing, analogous to Fermi sea (or surface) displacements, Bose fields that in this case, correspond to fluctuations of the Bose condensate. The exact dynamical structure factor has a coherent part that corresponds to the Bogoliubov spectrum and an incoherent part that is a result of correlations.

The Role of Nonequilibrium Dynamical Screening in Carrier Thermalization

We investigate the role played by nonequilibrium dynamical screening in the thermalization of carriers in a simplified two-component two-band model of a semiconductor. The main feature of our approach is the theoretically sound treatment of collisions. We abandon Fermi's Golden rule in favor of a nonequilibrium field theoretic formalism as the former is applicable only in the long-time regime. We also introduce the concept of nonequilibrium dynamical screening. The dephasing of excitonic quantum beats as a result of carrier-carrier scattering is brought out. At low densities it is found that the dephasing times due to carrier-carrier scattering is in picoseconds and not femtoseconds, in agreement with experiments. The polarization dephasing rates are computed as a function of the excited carrier density and it is found that the dephasing rate for carrier-carrier scattering is proportional to the carrier density at ultralow densities. The scaling relation is sublinear at higher densities, which enables a comparison with experiment.
