Transversely K\"ahler almost contact metric Lie algebras

We study transversely K\"ahler almost contact metric Lie algebras $(\mathfrak{g},\varphi,\xi,\eta,g)$ such that the structure $1$-form $\eta$ is a contact form. They include both quasi Sasakian and anti-quasi-Sasakian Lie algebras of maximal rank. In the case where the center of the Lie algebra is nontrivial, they are $1$-dimensional central extensions of K\"ahler Lie algebras via a symplectic form. We investigate the $5$-dimensional case, obtaining a classification of $\eta$-Einstein transversely K\"ahler almost contact metric Lie algebras of maximal rank. If the center is trivial, the structure is always $\alpha$-Sasakian. If the center is nontrivial and the K\"ahler quotient $\mathfrak{g}/\mathfrak{z(g)}$ is not abelian, the structure is quasi Sasakian; it is $\alpha$-Sasakian on central extensions of K\"ahler-Einstein $4$-dimensional Lie algebras, and not conversely. Up to isomorphisms, the Heisenberg Lie algebra $\mathfrak{h}_5$ is the only $5$-dimensional Lie algebra admitting $\eta$-Einstein transversely K\"ahler structures which are not quasi Sasakian, including anti-quasi-Sasakian structures. In fact, we show that any $5$-dimensional anti-quasi-Sasakian Lie algebra is isomorphic to $\mathfrak{h}_5$.

A new approach to the classification of almost contact metric manifolds via intrinsic endomorphisms

In 1990, D. Chinea and C. Gonzalez gave a classification of almost contact metric manifolds into $2^{12}$ classes, based on the behaviour of the covariant derivative $\nabla^g\Phi$ of the fundamental $2$-form $\Phi$. This large number makes it difficult to deal with this class of manifolds. We propose a new approach to almost contact metric manifolds by introducing two intrinsic endomorphisms $S$ and $h$, which bear their name from the fact that they are, basically, the entities appearing in the intrinsic torsion. We present a new classification scheme for them by providing a simple flowchart based on algebraic conditions involving $S$ and $h$, which then naturally leads to a regrouping of the Chinea-Gonzalez classes, and, in each step, to a further refinement, eventually ending in the single classes. This method allows a more natural exposition and derivation of both known and new results, like a new characterization of almost contact metric manifolds admitting a characteristic connection in terms of intrinsic endomorphisms. We also describe in detail the remarkable (and still very large) subclass of $\mathcal{H}$-parallel almost contact manifolds, defined by the condition $(\nabla^g_X\Phi)(Y,Z)=0$ for all horizontal vector fields, $X,Y,Z\in\mathcal{H}$.

Anti-quasi-Sasakian manifolds

We introduce and study a special class of almost contact metric manifolds, which we call anti-quasi-Sasakian (aqS). Among the class of transversely K\"ahler almost contact metric manifolds $(M,\varphi, \xi,\eta,g)$, quasi-Sasakian and anti-quasi-Sasakian manifolds are characterized, respectively, by the $\varphi$-invariance and the $\varphi$-anti-invariance of the $2$-form $d\eta$. A Boothby-Wang type theorem allows to obtain aqS structures on principal circle bundles over K\"ahler manifolds endowed with a closed $(2,0)$-form. We characterize aqS manifolds with constant $\xi$-sectional curvature equal to $1$: they admit an $Sp(n)\times 1$-reduction of the frame bundle such that the manifold is transversely hyperk\"ahler, carrying a second aqS structure and a null Sasakian $\eta$-Einstein structure. We show that aqS manifolds with constant sectional curvature are necessarily flat and cok\"ahler. Finally, by using a metric connection with torsion, we provide a sufficient condition for an aqS manifold to be locally decomposable as the Riemannian product of a K\"ahler manifold and an aqS manifold with structure of maximal rank. Under the same hypothesis, $(M,g)$ cannot be locally symmetric.

Curvature Properties of 3-$(\alpha,\delta)$-Sasaki Manifolds

We investigate curvature properties of 3-$(\alpha,\delta)$-Sasaki manifolds, a special class of almost 3-contact metric manifolds generalizing 3-Sasaki manifolds (corresponding to $\alpha = \delta = 1$) that admit a canonical metric connection with skew torsion and define a Riemannian submersion over a quaternionic K\"ahler manifold with vanishing, positive or negative scalar curvature, according to $\delta = 0$, $\alpha\delta > 0$ or $\alpha\delta < 0$. We shall investigate both the Riemannian curvature and the curvature of the canonical connection, with particular focus on their curvature operators, regarded as symmetric endomorphisms of the space of 2-forms. We describe their spectrum, find distinguished eigenforms, and study the conditions of strongly definite curvature in the sense of Thorpe.

Homogeneous non-degenerate $3$-$(α,δ)$-Sasaki manifolds and submersions over quaternionic Kähler spaces

We show that every $3$-$(α,δ)$-Sasaki manifold of dimension $4n + 3$ admits a locally defined Riemannian submersion over a quaternionic Kähler manifold of scalar curvature $16n(n+2)αδ$. In the non-degenerate case ($δ\neq 0$) we describe all homogeneous $3$-$(α,δ)$-Sasaki manifolds fibering over symmetric Wolf spaces (case $αδ> 0$) and over their the noncompact dual symmetric spaces (case $αδ< 0$). If $αδ> 0$, this yields a complete classification of homogeneous $3$-$(α,δ)$-Sasaki manifolds; for $αδ< 0$, we provide a general construction of homogeneous $3$-$(α,δ)$-Sasaki manifolds fibering over nonsymmetric Alekseevsky spaces, the lowest possible dimension of such a manifold being $19$.

Odd dimensional counterparts of abelian complex and hypercomplex structures

We introduce the notion of abelian almost contact structures on an odd dimensional real Lie algebra $\mathfrak g$. This a sufficient condition for the structure to be normal. We investigate correspondences with even dimensional real Lie algebras endowed with an abelian complex structure, and with Kähler Lie algebras when $\mathfrak g$ carries a compatible inner product. The classification of 5-dimensional Sasakian Lie algebras with abelian structure is obtained. Later, we introduce and study abelian almost 3-contact structures on real Lie algebras of dimension $4n+3$. These are given by triples of abelian almost contact structures, satisfying certain compatibility conditions, which are equivalent to the existence of a sphere of abelian almost contact structures. We obtain the classification of these Lie algebras in dimension 7. Finally, we deal with the geometry of a Lie group $G$ endowed with a left invariant abelian almost 3-contact structure and a compatible left invariant Riemannian metric. We determine conditions for $G$ to admit a special metric connection with totally skew-symmetric torsion, called canonical, which plays the role of the Bismut connection for HKT structures arising from abelian hypercomplex structures. We provide examples and discuss the parallelism of the torsion of the canonical connection.

Nearly Sasakian manifolds revisited

We provide a new, self-contained and more conceptual proof of the result that an almost contact metric manifold of dimension greater than 5 is Sasakian if and only if it is nearly Sasakian.

Generalizations of 3-Sasakian manifolds and skew torsion

In the first part, we define and investigate new classes of almost 3-contact metric manifolds, with two guiding ideas in mind: first, what geometric objects are best suited for capturing the key properties of almost 3-contact metric manifolds, and second, the newly defined classes should admit 'good' metric connections with skew torsion. In particular, we introduce the Reeb commutator function and the Reeb Killing function, we define the new classes of canonical almost 3-contact metric manifolds and of 3-$(\alpha,\delta)$-Sasaki manifolds (including as special cases 3-Sasaki manifolds, quaternionic Heisenberg groups, and many others) and prove that the latter are hypernormal, thus generalizing a seminal result by Kashiwada. We study their behaviour under a new class of deformations, called $\mathcal{H}$-homothetic deformations, and prove that they admit an underlying quaternionic contact structure, from which we deduce the Ricci curvature. For example, a 3-$(\alpha,\delta)$-Sasaki manifold is Einstein either if $\alpha=\delta$ (the 3-$\alpha$-Sasaki case) or if $\delta=(2n+3)\alpha$, where $\dim M=4n+3$. The second part is actually devoted to finding these adapted connections. We start with a very general notion of $\varphi$-compatible connections, where $\varphi$ denotes any element of the associated sphere of almost contact structures, and make them unique by a certain extra condition, thus yielding the notion of canonical connection (they exist exactly on canonical manifolds, hence the name). For 3-$(\alpha,\delta)$-Sasaki manifolds, we compute the torsion of this connection explicitly and we prove that it is parallel, we describe the holonomy, the $\nabla$-Ricci curvature, and we show that the metric cone is a HKT-manifold. In dimension 7, we construct a cocalibrated $G_2$-structure inducing the canonical connection and we prove the existence of four generalized Killing spinors.

On nearly Sasakian and nearly cosymplectic manifolds

We prove that every nearly Sasakian manifold of dimension greater than five is Sasakian. This provides a new criterion for an almost contact metric manifold to be Sasakian. Moreover, we classify nearly cosymplectic manifolds of dimension greater than five.

Nearly Sasakian geometry and $SU(2)$-structures

We carry on a systematic study of nearly Sasakian manifolds. We prove that any nearly Sasakian manifold admits two types of integrable distributions with totally geodesic leaves which are, respectively, Sasakian or $5$-dimensional nearly Sasakian manifolds. As a consequence, any nearly Sasakian manifold is a contact manifold. Focusing on the $5$-dimensional case, we prove that there exists a one-to-one correspondence between nearly Sasakian structures and a special class of nearly hypo $SU(2)$-structures. By deforming such a $SU(2)$-structure one obtains in fact a Sasaki-Einstein structure. Further we prove that both nearly Sasakian and Sasaki-Einstein $5$-manifolds are endowed with supplementary nearly cosymplectic structures. We show that there is a one-to-one correspondence between nearly cosymplectic structures and a special class of hypo $SU(2)$-structures which is again strictly related to Sasaki-Einstein structures. Furthermore, we study the orientable hypersurfaces of a nearly K\"{a}hler 6-manifold and, in the last part of the paper, we define canonical connections for nearly Sasakian manifolds, which play a role similar to the Gray connection in the context of nearly K\"{a}hler geometry. In dimension $5$ we determine a connection which parallelizes all the nearly Sasakian $SU(2)$-structure as well as the torsion tensor field. An analogous result holds also for Sasaki-Einstein structures.

A classification of certain almost $α$-Kenmotsu manifolds

We study $\mathcal D$-homothetic deformations of almost $α$-Kenmotsu structures. We characterize almost contact metric manifolds which are $CR$-integrable almost $α$-Kenmotsu manifolds, through the existence of a canonical linear connection, invariant under $\mathcal D$-homothetic deformations. If the canonical connection associated to the structure $(φ,ξ,η,g)$ has parallel torsion and curvature, then the local geometry is completely determined by the dimension of the manifold and the spectrum of the operator $h'$ defined by $2αh'=({\mathcal L}_ξφ)\circφ$. In particular, the manifold is locally equivalent to a Lie group endowed with a left invariant almost $α$-Kenmotsu structure. In the case of almost $α$-Kenmotsu $(κ,μ)'$-spaces, this classification gives rise to a scalar invariant depending on the real numbers $κ$ and $α$.

Bi-Legendrian manifolds and paracontact geometry

We study the interplays between paracontact geometry and the theory of bi-Legendrian manifolds. We interpret the bi-Legendrian connection of a bi-Legendrian manifold M as the paracontact connection of a canonical paracontact structure induced on M and then we discuss many consequences of this result both for bi-Legendrian and for paracontact manifolds. Finally new classes of examples of paracontact manifolds are presented.

A Note on 3-quasi-Sasakian Geometry

3-quasi-Sasakian manifolds were recently studied by the authors as a suitable setting unifying 3-Sasakian and 3-cosymplectic geometries. In this paper some geometric properties of this class of almost 3-contact metric manifolds are briefly reviewed, with an emphasis on those more related to physical applications.

3-quasi-Sasakian manifolds

In the present paper we carry on a systematic study of 3-quasi-Sasakian manifolds. In particular we prove that the three Reeb vector fields generate an involutive distribution determining a canonical totally geodesic and Riemannian foliation. Locally, the leaves of this foliation turn out to be Lie groups: either the orthogonal group or an abelian one. We show that 3-quasi-Sasakian manifolds have a well-defined rank, obtaining a rank-based classification. Furthermore, we prove a splitting theorem for these manifolds assuming the integrability of one of the almost product structures. Finally, we show that the vertical distribution is a minimum of the corrected energy.
