Non-sequential recursive pair substitutions and numerical entropy estimates in symbolic dynamical systems

We numerically test the method of non-sequential recursive pair substitutions to estimate the entropy of an ergodic source. We compare its performance with other classical methods to estimate the entropy (empirical frequencies, return times, Lyapunov exponent). We considered as a benchmark for the methods several systems with different statistical properties: renewal processes, dynamical systems provided and not provided with a Markov partition, slow or fast decay of correlations. Most experiments are supported by rigorous mathematical results, which are explained in the paper.

Multi-dimensional sparse time series: feature extraction

We show an analysis of multi-dimensional time series via entropy and statistical linguistic techniques. We define three markers encoding the behavior of the series, after it has been translated into a multi-dimensional symbolic sequence. The leading component and the trend of the series with respect to a mobile window analysis result from the entropy analysis and label the dynamical evolution of the series. The diversification formalizes the differentiation in the use of recurrent patterns, from a Zipf law point of view. These markers are the starting point of further analysis such as classification or clustering of large database of multi-dimensional time series, prediction of future behavior and attribution of new data. We also present an application to economic data. We deal with measurements of money investments of some business companies in advertising market for different media sources.

Data compression and genomes: a two dimensional life domain map

We define the complexity of DNA sequences as the information content per nucleotide, calculated by means of some Lempel-Ziv data compression algorithm. It is possible to use the statistics of the complexity values of the functional regions of different complete genomes to distinguish among genomes of different domains of life (Archaea, Bacteria and Eukarya). We shall focus on the distribution function of the complexity of noncoding regions. We show that the three domains may be plotted in separate regions within the two-dimensional space where the axes are the skewness coefficient and the curtosis coefficient of the aforementioned distribution. Preliminary results on 15 genomes are introduced.

Phase transitions in social sciences: two-populations mean field theory

A new mean field statistical mechanics model of two interacting groups of spins is introduced and the phase transition studied in terms of their relative size. A jump of the average magnetization is found for large values of the mutual interaction when the relative percentage of the two populations crosses a critical threshold. It is shown how the critical percentage depends on internal interactions and on the initial magnetizations. The model is interpreted as a prototype of resident-immigrant cultural interaction and conclusions from the social sciences perspectives are drawn.

Sublinear Growth of Information in DNA Sequences

We introduce a novel method to analyse complete genomes and recognise some distinctive features by means of an adaptive compression algorithm, which is not DNA-oriented. We study the Information Content as a function of the number of symbols encoded by the algorithm. Preliminar results are shown concerning regions having a sublinear type of information growth, which is strictly connected to the presence of highly repetitive subregions that might be supposed to have a regulatory function within the genome.

Vortex dynamics in evolutive flows: a weakly chaotic phenomenon

We study the vortex dynamics in an evolutive flow. We carry out the statistical analysis of the resulting time series by means of the joint use of a compression and an entropy diffusion method. This approach to complexity makes it possible for us to establish that the time series emerging from the wavelet analysis of the vortex dynamics is a weakly chaotic process driven by a hidden dynamic process. The complexity of the hidden driving process is shown to be located at the border between the stationary and non-stationary state.

Computational information for the logistic map at the chaos threshold

We study the logistic map $f(x)=λx(1-x)$ on the unit square at the chaos threshold. By using the methods of symbolic dynamics, the information content of an orbit of a dynamical system is defined as the Algorithmic Information Content (AIC) of a symbolic sequence. We give results for the behaviour of the AIC for the logistic map. Since the AIC is not a computable function we use, as approximation of the AIC, a notion of information content given by the length of the string after it has been compressed by a compression algorithm, and in particular we introduce a new compression algorithm called CASToRe. The information content is then used to characterise the chaotic behaviour.

Information, complexity and entropy: a new approach to theory and measurement methods

In this paper, we present some results on information, complexity and entropy as defined below and we discuss their relations with the Kolmogorov-Sinai entropy which is the most important invariant of a dynamical system. These results have the following features and motivations: -we give a new computable definition of information and complexity which allows to give a computable characterization of the K-S entropy; -these definitions make sense even for a single orbit and can be measured by suitable data compression algorithms; hence they can be used in simulations and in the analysis of experimental data; -the asymptotic behavior of these quantities allows to compute not only the Kolmogorov-Sinai entropy but also other quantities which give a measure of the chaotic behavior of a dynamical system even in the case of null entropy.
