Relaxation for highly discontinuous, possibly unbounded, integral functionals

We consider the functional \[ F(u)=\int_{\Omega} f(\nabla u)\,dx\qquad u\in\varphi+W^{1,1}_0(\Omega) \] where $\Omega$ is a Lipschitz bounded open set of $\R^N$, $f:\R^N\to\R\cup \{+\infty\}$ is a superlinear Borel function, $\varphi\in W^{1,\infty}(\Omega)$. We prove that, if $f$ is superlinear and satisfies very weak assumptions, then the Lavrentiev phenomenon does not occur. We underline that our assumptions include the case of non continuous, non convex, and unbounded Lagrangians.

Parabolic PDEs with Dynamic Data under a Bounded Slope Condition

We establish the existence of Lipschitz continuous solutions to the Cauchy Dirichlet problem for a class of evolutionary partial differential equations of the form $$ \partial_tu-\text{div}_x \nabla_\xi f(\nabla u)=0 $$ in a space-time cylinder $\Omega_T=\Omega\times (0,T)$, subject to time-dependent boundary data $g\colon \partial_{\mathcal{P}}\Omega_T\to \mathbf{R}$ prescribed on the parabolic boundary. The main novelty in our analysis is a time-dependent version of the classical bounded slope condition, imposed on the boundary data $g$ along the lateral boundary $\partial\Omega\times (0,T)$. More precisely, we require that for each fixed $t\in [0,T)$, the graph of $g(\cdot ,t)$ over $\partial\Omega$ admits supporting hyperplanes with slopes that may vary in time but remain uniformly bounded. The key to handling time-dependent data lies in constructing more flexible upper and lower barriers.

Local Lipschitz continuity of the minimizers of nonuniformly convex functionals under the Lower Bounded Slope Condition

We prove the local Lipschitz regularity of the minimizers of functionals of the form \[ \mathcal I(u)=\int_\Omega f(\nabla u(x))+g(x)u(x)\,dx\qquad u\in\phi+W^{1,1}_0(\Omega) \] where $g$ is bounded and $\phi$ satisfies the Lower Bounded Slope Condition. The function $f$ is assumed to be convex but not uniformly convex everywhere. As byproduct, we also prove the existence of a locally Lipschitz minimizer for a class of functionals of the type above but allowing to the function $f$ to be nonconvex.

Local Lipschitz continuity for energy integrals with slow growth and lower order terms

We consider integral functionals with slow growth and explicit dependence on u of the lagrangian; this includes many relevant examples, as, for instance, in elastoplastic torsion problems or in image restoration problems. Our aim is to prove that the local minimizers are locally Lipschitz continuous. The proof makes use of recent results concerning the Bounded Slope Conditions.

Lipschitz minimizers for a class of integral functionals under the bounded slope condition

We consider the functional $\int_\Omega g(\nabla u+\textbf X^\ast)d\mathscr L^{2n}$ where $g$ is convex and $\textbf X^\ast(x,y)=2(-y,x)$ and we study the minimizers in $BV(\Omega)$ of the associated Dirichlet problem. We prove that, under the bounded slope condition on the boundary datum, and suitable conditions on $g$, there exists a unique minimizer which is also Lipschitz continuous.

BV Minimizers of the area functional in the Heisenberg group under the bounded slope condition

We consider the area functional for t-graphs in the sub-Riemannian Heisenberg group and study minimizers of the associated Dirichlet problem. We prove that, under a bounded slope condition on the boundary datum, there exists a unique minimizer and that this minimizer is Lipschitz continuous. We also provide an example showing that, in the first Heisenberg group, Lipschitz regularity is sharp even under the bounded slope condition.
